Report of the Rural Immersion Training Program 2018 for NABARD OFFICERS

Rural Immersion Training Program 2018 for NABARD OFFICERS was held between 26th of March

to 14th of April 2018 in Organization for the Development of People, Mysore. 10 newly

recruited officers across the country participated in the trainings. ODP, Mysore has been

providing trainings since three years from 2015. The training which was the new perspective

brought in the trainings conducted for the newly recruited officers, which part of their

induction and orientation programs. The third batch of Rural Immersion Training Program was

provided by ODP, Mysore. So far ODP have trained nearly an fifty NABARD officers who have

been recruited newly with the support of NABARD’s Karnataka Regional Office, Bangalore.

Rural development programs. Also it was an effort to understand the rural dynamics in

different sectors, rural communication and behavior and internalize rural activation and its

relations to NABARD’s rural development and banking programs. Review and Analyze

sustainable Best Practices used by the community based groups, positioning of programs of

NABARD and identify the emerging trends in rural banking and spotting the future

developments and Networking & establishing partnership with key players to create a win- win

situation were also part of this program. Inputs were delivered by the experts and who are also

the Co-coordinators of ODP and having many years of experiences in the relevant fields of Rural

Development. Officers from health dept., DDMs, Bank Managers, and Director from APMC

Chief Conservator of Forest, Mysore Deputy Director, Department of Women and Child

Development, Mysore were also delivered the inputs on their respective field.

The 21 days Rural Immersion programs consists of Sessions, Field visits, demonstrations and

interactions with different stake holders and Details are given below:

Women Empowerment program is the oldest programs of ODP which started in 1988-98 with the formation of First Sangha at Kollegal.

The structure promoted by ODP i.e has 2403 SHGs, Central Committees, Taluk and District level federation and MMO at the State level and its sustainability.

27.03.2018 Field Visit on PRA Conducting PRA in Brahmapura village , Nagunalli Gram Panchayat : 2 woman SHGs and 1 Male SHG in the village participated in the PRA.

Transect walk: Visited Primary health center , pre- primary school, saw water storage device and several houses were being constructed through grant from Awas Yojana. Social mapping: The villagers drew map of their own village and showed various types of houses eg asbestos sheet, RCC and tiled. Also marked were the houses with toilets, houses having at least one graduate and other physical structure. Wealth ranking: After the people were initiated by explaining the process and the purpose of the exercise, the participants decided criterion on which the houses were to be placed in 3 categories - Improved, middle and poor. Takeaway from wealth ranking : people’s perception on wealth and how they categorize themselves in the village economic scenario, whether the exercise has loopholes, what is the economic activity undertaken by people from different families etc.

29.03.2018 Orientation on role of banking in development of people

Role of banking in development, help in credit creation, use of money for productive purposes by channelizing money from one corner to another and provide one-stop services to people like DBT, Insurance, Pension etc.

NABARD role in development of people:

NABARD develops a concept/model which is further being used by banks as a bankable business eg., SHG Bank linkage model, KCC, FPO.

31.03.2018 Visit to Women - SHG

Visit to Chandakvadi Village, Chamrajnagar District at a night school provided by Government.

The biggest village has 22 existing SHGs and trainess interacted with 4 SHGs: Bhagyalakshmi ( 12 year old) , Ranjana (7 years), Saraswati (15 years) and Bhuneshwari ( 10 years).

Learnt about the membership fee , number of members, total savings, frequency of meetings and methods used to ensure attendance.

Leadership is rotational i.e. it changes every month. CC representatives are decided in the meetings.

Record keeping of SHGs, the number of loans availed by members on an average over the years.

Bank linkage of the SHGs, loan availed from the banks for consumption activity.

Case studies of members where over the years asset creation has taken place as a consequence of being part of SHG.

No caste feelings among the members, there is respect and unity between the members.

SHGs are taking up various issues that take up the village and trying to form an effective pressure group.

SUF has given 3326 loans for toilets till March 2018 of which 1458 loans are funded by NABARD.

Interaction with beneficiaries Supported by NABARD for Housing and Sanitation project implementation and met 10 beneficiaries of the NABARD loans for toilet construction.

The Loan for toilet construction is Rs. 20,000/ - per beneficiary and the beneficiaries had availed the government subsidy upto Rs 15,000/ - provided under Swatchh Bharat Abhiyan. Often toilet cum bathrooms was constructed and cost was around Rs 1 lakh and hence remaining loan was taken from the SHGs. Toilets were being used by both men and women and had water connection as well

Awareness of Loans was created by Animators of ODP and SHGs of which they are members. Repayment of loan was there and no defaults were there. Different components of the cost were also understood like Bricks, sand, mason, tiles

NABARD logo was present on the toilet doors constructed using NABARD funds and people were aware of the fact that NABARD has provided the funds .

Valedictory: On 14th of April 2018 the Rural Immersion Program has been summed up. Training has been evaluated by Mr. Arvamudum, DDM, Mysore, NABARD. Trainees made presentations of their learning’s and experiences. The Valedictory function was chaired by Mr. Arvamudum, DDM, Mysore, NABARD and Rev. Fr. Staney D. Almeda, Director of ODP & NABARD Officers gave the key note address. Certificates were distributed by DDM, Mysore, NABARD and Rev. Fr. Alex Prashanth Sequare, Assistant Director, ODP.
