Welcome to the 3rd edition of our Relax magazine. Grab a cuppa, get comfortable and have a read about what’s happening at your club in the coming months. If you can’t get comfortable at home, come in for an awesome cup of Hennessey coffee or our new Matcha Latte at our café while enjoying the new café furniture.

Our lady bowlers finished the year off in spectacular style, winning the New South Wales Bowler of the Year. Congratulations to Genevieve Delves on her maiden Bowler of the Year. I am sure she will win many more. Congratulations also to Natasha Scott who was a nominee for this award also.

Our male and lady bowlers have started the year off in fine form. Natasha Scott has been selected to represent Australia for the 2019 Asia Pacific Championships. These championships will be played at the Gold Coast in June where she will be playing in the triples and fours. Raymond Terrace bowlers Clint Doust, Ian Lean and Matt Baus won the District Triples defeating Soldiers Point team skippered by Simon Mitchell on Sunday 10th February. Well done lads and I am sure that you will represent us well at the State Championships.

Our darts team also finished the year off strongly winning the A grade. We look forward to seeing our teams do well in 2019. If you looking for something to do on a Wednesday night, pop down for a beer and watch our teams play.

We look forward to seeing some great acts again this year. Mitchell Coombes is back and I am sure his tickets will sell fast. Grab your tickets soon so you don’t miss out. We welcome country back again to Raymond Terrace with Adam Eckersley and Brooke McClymont performing on Saturday 13th April. They will be performing songs from their No 1 ARIA album ‘Adam and Brooke’. Jumping Jukebox Duo with Wayne Parkinson will be performing this Melbourne Cup.

From a financial point of view, your club is trading well. We are travelling into an election year and that means we could have new or the same people on the Board. Make sure you vote at the election as every vote counts. Governments can make some interesting changes, so keep your eye on what they bring to the table this year.

Remember I am always looking for new ideas and if you have one, please feel free to pop in and see me.

Get to know your Vice Chairman Brett GleesonWhat is the proudest moment in your life? The birth of my 3 children are high points, however seeing them grow into wonderful individuals makes me very proud. Having all 3 children graduate from University probably tops the lot, except for maybe another grandchild.

What are your goals on becoming a Board member of RTBC? Initially to learn about the club industry and contribute my experience and knowledge of corporate governance and strategic positioning. Now after 6 years on the board, my goals are to improve the long term planning, strengthen the management and foster a strong positive culture. The Club has tremendous potential and with a competent and well focused Board, we can make that potential a reality.

What is your favourite drink?Stone’s Ginger Beer followed by Toohey’s Old and Jamesons Irish Whisky.

What is your favourite meal? Well, I’m blessed to be married to an amazing ‘cook’. I enjoy lamb or goat dishes with fresh vegetables produced on our farm. I also like seafood.

Who growing up did you see as a mentor and how did they impact your life?Growing up on the family farm in the Quirindi district, my parents and my mum’s parents were significant influencers on who I am. As a teenager, it was my best mate’s parents, especially after my parents had passed. Professionally, I was very fortunate to be mentored by my first boss in 1983, Professor David Cubbin, the Dean of the Arts and Media Faculty at Southern Cross Uni and Ivan Hincks, the Director of Community Relations.

Tell us a bit about your working career up to this moment?I graduated with a Business Degree with majors in accounting and management having been told twice by career counsellors at High School that I wasn’t ‘smart enough to go to Uni’. Funny enough, two family members said the same thing. I think I proved them all wrong. My first career was in Radio and at 23 years I was appointed as the General Manager of 2NCR (Lismore) for 4 years, then General Manager of the Media and Arts Centre at Southern Cross Uni for 18 months. I then moved to Newcastle to be the General Manager of 2NUR for 5 years. In 1992, I started as the Executive Director for WEA Adult Education & Training. After 10 years in that role, I established Gleeson Consulting and became a full time consultant to the Department of Education and Training as well as private sector clients. In 2007, I was appointed Executive Officer of Hunter Community College and in 2010 I took on the role of General Manager of the Business Growth Centre at Gateshead. 2017 saw me take on the role of General Manager of Newcastle Regional Show. I’ve just resigned from that position to return to my consulting role on a part time basis. I’ve also sat on numerous Boards, in voluntary and paid capacities.

Where would you like to see the club in 40 years? 40 years is too far out to forecast. I expect the Club will continue to be a focal point for the community. I expect it will have enhanced and expanded club and bowls facilities and diversified its activities. Hopefully it will continue to be a welcoming place where friendship are forged and great bowls are played, as well as other sports like darts and croquet.

Do you play Bowls?Yes, I started about 6 years ago when I retired from playing cricket for Seaham. Winning the Major Triples Championship with Ian Lean and Lennon Scott 3 years ago has been a highlight so far.

Who is your favourite player you play with and against and why?I enjoy playing with and against mates like Brian Harris, Brad Reed and Ray Jones. Playing Thursday night social bowls with my wife, Mallory is very enjoyable. Playing District and Mattara Pairs with Lance Jackson and making the Semi Final last year was a real buzz. I always enjoy playing with and against the top players so I continue to learn.

Who is your favourite band and song?I don’t have a favourite, I like variety in music. Anything from light classics like Vivaldi, through to Rod Stewart, Linda Ronstadt, Barbara Streisand, Neil Diamond, the Corrs, Garth Brooks and Mary Black.

Where in the world would you like to travel and why?We were planning a trip to the UK and Ireland this year to visit places where our families originated, however this has been replaced by a trip to the USA for our son, Ben’s, wedding in Arizona.

How did you meet your beautiful wife?We were professional peers, as we were both CEO’s in the Adult Education sector at the time.

Anthea you have recently joined us as at the Club as the Events Manager, why did you want to join our team?I am passionate about Event Management and enjoy using my skills to support in the creation of our Members and Guests special occasions/events.Giving back to the community has always been important to me and this position, at a community-based Club, allows me to do that as part of my role.Being new, what are you doing for our Members and Guests to get to know you?Interacting with Members and Guests is very important to me, so I will always find time to talk to our Members & Guests. Since joining the Club I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know everyone - with over 4,000 members it may take me a little bit of time. What is your experience in Event Management? How will you use your skills at the Club?Last year I spent a season with the Central Coast Mariners in an Events & Community role which I absolutely loved. I have also spent 18 months working at the McDonald Jones Stadium in an Event Operations role and in other event roles to build up my experience. What do you enjoy most about your new role? Why? I’m a people person so I enjoy meeting new people and spending time chatting to get to know them. We have a great team at YOUR Club that all work together which makes my new position enjoyable.

Meet your TeamAnthea CameronEvents Manager

How will your new role improve our Members and Guests experience at the Club?Chatting with our Members & Guests to listen to their feedback and for any suggestions to improve their experience at YOUR Club and make your visits more enjoyable and fun. What will success look like for you as the Events Manager?Success in the Events Manager role is really a team effort as everyone digs in to support in creating memories for our guests’ special occasion whether it is a milestone party, a wedding or a celebration of life. As Events Manager to create this success I believe when meeting with our clients to explore and understand what their needs are and try to align our services to match their needs at the best price possible. Can you give us a peek into some of your ideas for our Events at the Club over the coming months?I want to showcase our Club and Rectory. Part of this is focussing on bringing more events to our beautiful Rectory, such as weddings, birthdays, meetings, high teas and other functions that will find the property highlights their event. When not at the Club, what do you do to relax?I’m not someone who relaxes very often as I enjoy being out & about as much as possible. When I’m not at the club I spend time on my Salami business on most of my weekends attending many fun events & festivals. If I do get the chance to have a day off I love to spend it with family & friends around the water or helping at my local dog rescue shelter.

CroquetJoin us every Monday and Friday and try your hand at a game of Croquet. Games are set for all ranges of experience with plenty of help on hand to assist you with your game. When: Mondays and Fridays Games are played either in the morning or evening. Times are listed on the gate to the back green weekly.

Cost: $5 per personContact: Pam Begley 0438 717 383 Croquet Golf games are played each week. See below for the rules of croquet golf.

CROQUET GOLF RULES The game is played as singles or doubles and the 4 coloured balls (blue, red, black, yellow) must be played in the correct sequence with each player striking his/her own ball once in a turn. The game commences with each player hitting his/her ball from corner 4. The first team to ‘run’ a hoop (ie put one of their balls through a hoop) in the right direction scores the hoop. Play then moves to the next hoop in sequence. The two teams battle for each hoop and this may involve a team using one of their balls to knock an opponent’s ball away from a hoop running position. In a 13 point game the first team to score 7 hoops is the winner with a typical game being played in about 45 minutes.

Meet your Team

Raymond Terrace Bowling Club donated $1,000 to the Raymond Terrace Croquet Club late last year to assist with the purchase of balls for their players to use.L to R: Jason Stokes CEO, Pam Begley, Geoff Codrington & Ron King from Telarah Croquet Club (who assisted with setting up our green for the croquet members to use).

Hello again everyone! Well another season of Bowls is upon us and the Pennant Season is fast approaching. Our Annual Australia Day Fours Tournament has been run and won by Chris Willingham, Sam Laguzza, Lennon Scott and Matt Baus. Club Championships have already commenced and Draws for half of our events are on the Bowls Board. It is great to see a good number of participants in this year’s Championships however good numbers go hand in hand with scheduling problems. This is exacerbated by the fact that Raymond Terrace Bowling Club and its members have achieved extraordinary results over the last 7-10 years with nearly every Zone Championship featuring JETS Players on the final weekend. This was no different recently with Matt Baus, Ian Lean and Clinton Doust winning the Zone 2 District Triples Championship. Like I have said many times before; success breeds success, and that has been evident in our results over recent years, however success also brings scheduling problems along with it. Unfortunately, this is a price we have no choice but to pay. If you are involved in Club Championships please be advised that as soon as the Draw is done all games are able to be played by arrangement. These games can be played before the bowls team have boarded the games if it suits both teams.

Last year was a monumental year for our Club. Can we repeat it in 2019?!?

Raymond Terrace Bowling Club was proud to be the major sponsor for The Raymond Terrace Bowling Club Newcastle Showgirl Competition. For the entrants, the Newcastle Showgirl event is the first stage of The Land Sydney Royal Showgirl Competition - the premier leadership program for young women in NSW. It identifies ambassadors for rural NSW and the Agricultural Show movement. A Newcastle Showgirl is an ambassador for both the Newcastle Regional Show and the Newcastle Community. Her role involves formal and informal duties at the Newcastle Regional Show and associated events.

Judging took place at the Club on 1st December with our 2ic Tara Ball, Kathy McDonald (who has extensive knowledge and experience with Showgirl) plus Josh Gilbert (who is a former RAS Rural Achiever and is renowned for his work in agriculture, sustainability and Indigenous affairs). Judging criteria is based on personality, confidence, ambitions/goals, general

knowledge, rural knowledge, personal presentation and volunteer/community participation. Entrants must also demonstrate knowledge of their local community and current affairs.

The 2019 Raymond Terrace Bowling Club Newcastle and Hunter Showgirl is Casey-Lee Rebellato of Mount Hutton and the runner-up is Emily Steel of Elermore Vale. Casey-Lee was also Newcastle Showgirl in 2016. These girls will have the opportunity to be ambassadors for Regional Australia Bank The Show – Newcastle & Hunter and Newcastle as a city. At The Show, they will be involved in presenting prizes, sashing winners, speaking with the media, stallholders and show-goers. The Showgirls will also immerse themselves in everything The Show has to offer including events in the lead up to The Show weekend and assisting with the Teen Showgirl Competition.

Raymond Terrace Bowling Club are proud to be sponsors of The Show for 2019.

In September 2018, Council advised us that one of the trees at the Rectory appeared to have a disease (Armillaria luteobubalina) as it was losing its greenery from the top down. Initially we were told from Council there was a disease in the trees along Jacaranda Avenue that had killed 4 Jacaranda trees and it appeared to spread to one of our Norfolk Pine Trees. We were advised that if this disease was present, there was nothing that could be done to save the tree. We actioned this quickly and with the advise of Council, we sent off samples to the Royal Botanical Gardens in Sydney for analysing. This would determine whether the Norfolk Pine tree had the disease that was killing the Jacaranda Trees in Jacaranda Avenue.

We received an email on 5th December from John Atkins (teacher of Horticulture TAFE NSW) who advised that the tree appeared to have Botrysphearia canker and that he had seen this disease in Norfolk Island Pines in Swansea, Belmont and Singleton. The common sign of the disease is that the top of the tree will dieback in a downward direction over several years until the tree dies. There is a relationship between white cockatoos that carry the disease and pass into the tree when sharpening their beaks on the branches and trunk.

Tara had a meeting with Council on Tuesday 19 February who advised that we needed to remove the top of the tree approx. a meter below the decayed area. It was also advised that we need to organise a mulch area underneath both trees to the edge of the growth to allow the trees to hold the nutrients under the soil to promote healthy growth.

Hopper the Tree Lopper was phoned and a meeting has been organised to discuss what we can do to keep the tree alive.
