Isaac and Rebekah (Rebecca)

They are a recognized as the People of Faith

The covenant was RENEWED. The covenant between Abraham and God

with the promise to lead the people and to have descendants as numerous as the stars.

They are the parents of twins Esau and Jacob

Isaac’s Birthright

Isaac’s birthright should have gone to Esau because he was the oldest male child.

One day, when Isaac was sick, Isaac called Esau to formally give the birthright to Esau.

With the help of Rebekah, Jacob dressed up like Esau and tricked Isaac into giving him the birthright.

Esau became very upset with Jacob.

Jacob (Israel)

How did he get two wives? After he left his family, Jacob worked for a man

named Laban. He fell in love with Laban’s daughter, Rachel.

When Jacob asked to marry Rachel, Laban accepted.

Laban tricked Jacob into marrying his oldest daughter, Lea instead. Laban’s culture felt the oldest daughters must marry before the youngest.

Jacob had to work 7 more years to be allowed to, also, marry Rachel.

Jacob (Israel)

Jacob’s name was changed to Israel (which means ‘one who struggled with God’)

Jacob’s followed God’s will, but at times he struggled. He, even, fought with one of God’s messengers.

Jacob’s twelve sons went on to become the leaders of the 12 tribes of Israel.

Joseph and his brothers

Who was Joseph? Joseph was Jacob’s favorite son. He was his

dad’s favorite because he was the first son of his dad’s favorite wife, Rachel.

How did the brothers treat Joseph? Joseph’s brother felt that his father treated

him better than the rest. They became very jealous of him, and decided to fake his own death. They really sold Joseph into slavery.

What was his special gift (talent) and summarize one of the events. Joseph’s special gift was to interpret dreams.

Joseph one star rise above 11 stars. The 11 stars bowed down the top star.

Joseph interpreted the butler’s and cook’s dreams to say that the butler would be let free, while the cook would die in prison.

Joseph saw the 7 fat, healthy cows and 7 skinny cows as 7 years of prosperous growth and 7 years of famine.

How did he become a Governor of Egypt? Joseph correctly interpreted the dream of

the Pharaoh. It allowed the Egyptians to store enough food to survive during the 7 years of famine. Pharaoh was so happy with Joseph that he made him a governor.

Moses

What is the name of the Story of Moses leading the Israelites out of slavery? The Exodus

How did Moses fall under the care of the Pharaoh's daughter? In order to control the population, all male

Israelites were being killed. In order to save her son, Jochebed put Moses in a basket, and sent him down the river.

He became stuck along the reeds, and Pharaoh's daughter found him.

Why were the Israelites enslaved in Egypt? They were enslaved because they multiplied into a

large population in the generations after Joseph. Their population outgrew the Egyptians, and Pharaoh was scared that they would take over the Egyptians.

The Jewish Passover Feast On the 1st or 2nd night of Passover, Jewish families

celebrate the Seder meal. With this meal, they remember the events that led to the Israelites being freed from Egypt with the help of God. The leader takes each part of the meal, and shares its importance in remembering their religious ancestors.

Moses

How did God provide for the Israelites in the desert? Manna for Food Water from Rocks

How long did they wander in the desert? 40 years

Why did they have to wait so long before entering the Promised Land? God wanted them to prepare themselves to

be ready to live in the Promised Land.

Moses

Moses’s Meeting with God on Mt. Sinai God gave Moses the 10 Commandments on

the top of Mt. Sinai. It took Moses three days for this trip. God promised Moses, if the people followed these commandments, they would become the holy nation.

What Happened when Moses came down from the mountain? He found the Israelites worshipping a golden

calf that they had made. Moses became so angry that he broke the original tablets.

Where did the death of Moses happen? In the desert, outside of the Promised Land

How is the sacrifice of the lamb at the first Passover in Egypt symbolic of Jesus? The blood of the blameless and pure lamb on

the doorposts saved the Hebrews from death in the final plague in Egypt. Jesus, pure and innocent of our sins, shed His blood on the cross to save us from death by washing away our sins and giving us eternal life.

Joshua

Joshua was the leader of the Israelites, after the death of Moses.

How did the Israelites conquer the city of Jericho? The Israelites conquered the city of Jericho by

following God’s orders. They marched around the city for seven days with the ark of the covenant. On the seventh day, they blew the shofars and shouted, and the walls of Jericho fell. Then, they conquered it.

Why was Samuel dedicated to the Lord? Who trained him in the Temple? Samuel’s mother, Hanna, dedicated him to

the Lord because she could not get pregnant. She prayed to God that she would dedicate her child to him, if he let her become pregnant in her old age.

Kings of Israel

What is a prophet? A prophet is a person who receives a message

from God and proclaims it to the world. Why was Saul an unlikely choice to be king?

Saul was a man and farmer from the tribe of Benjamin, which was the smallest tribe.

How did Saul and David become friends? Once Saul disobeyed God’s orders, he became

depressed. He had a servant go and find a musician to play him music. The servant suggested David, a musician and soldier.

Kings of Israel

Who is the considered the greatest king of Israel? David

Who built the Temple? The third king of Israel, Solomon.

What was David’s major sin? How did he repent? David placed Uriah in the front of a battle, so that

he would have a better chance of dying. He did this so he could start a relationship and marry Bathseba.

He repented by realizing his mistakes and asking God for forgiveness.
