3rd - 8th Graders...do you have a talent or skill that you would like to share?

This is your time!

Friday, May 13th at 1:30 PM

Do you play an instrument......piano, harp, etc?Participate in gymnastics?Participate in dance?Participate in theatre?Juggle?Do magic tricks?

You can perform by yourself or yo might want to get a few friends together to create a skit or performance of some kind. There will be try-outs to gain a spot to share your talent on April 25 - 27.

So start practicing and deciding what you can do! It will be a lot of fun for all!

SPRING ATHLETIC BANQUET

Thursday, May 26th is the St. Peter Spring Athletic Banquet. The banquet will start at 6:00 PM with a catered dinner by Salernos in the Life Center. The celebration is for all student-athletes and their families that participated in any St. Peter sport this year. The night will include recognition of the teams, handing out awards, and coaches giving their season recaps to celebrate the athletic year. Registration will be sent out next week. Our guest speaker this year will be Chris Barker, Assistant Athletic Director at Carthage College.

PICNIC IN THE PARK TUESDAY, MAY 31ST

Parents join your child for a special lunch provided by our terrific cafeteria staff! Picnic Fare: Hamburger or Hot Dog Potato Chips Apple Slices Chocolate Chip Cookie Get your lunch and then take it to the field to share lunch time with your child and their class. It will be a great way to enjoy a lunch, our grounds, and time with your child at school! Coming early will be a great way to observe the events of field day, too! FOOD DRIVEThe Social Ministry Team is organizing a food drive to help Chicago Uptown Ministry and Jehovah Lutheran Church and School stock their food pantries for the summer. We will be collecting food from now until Wednesday, May 18th. Please place your food donations in the designated box in the narthex prior to that date. The school children are asked to bring their food donations to chapel on Wednesday, May 18th. Please only bring nonperishable items: canned foods (soup, tuna/salmon, ravioli, spaghetti, fruit, vegetables, etc), packaged foods (macaroni and cheese, pasta, potatoes, cereal, rice, etc), paper products (paper towels, facial tissue, toilet paper, etc.), and family-size toiletries (shampoo, soap, toothpaste, deodorant, etc.). If you would like to help pack food, packing will be on Wednesday, May 18th from 7:00 to 10:00 AM. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer please contact Vaughn or Diane Kuerschner at 847-776-6547. Thank you for your support of these ministries.

RETIREMENTSMiss Mielke, our Middle School English teacher, is retiring after 36 years of service at St. Peter and 46 years in the teaching ministry. She has served faithfully through the years as NJHS sponsor, vice principal, Walcamp Director, Department Head, Oracle Sponsor and 8th Grade Trip Sponsor. She has been a blessing to hundreds of students through the years as a champion of Grammar, Literature and Writing. We pray God's richest blessings on her retirement.

Mrs. Cheryl Grau, our part time French teacher, is retiring after 28 years at St. Peter. She has brought her passion and love of French to hundreds of students who in turn have pursued the joy of foreign language study. We pray God's best as she and her husband enjoy retirement in South Carolina.

We will honor both of these teachers as well as others on our staff reaching milestones in teaching on Sunday, May 22, between church services.

Mr. Henry Kogler, St. Peter's Music Director, is retiring after 12 years at St. Peter and 33 years in ministry. Mr. Kogler has served our school as choir teacher, organist, AV coordinator, after school music/instrumental teacher and leader in school worship services. He has blessed our students and staff with his leadership, love of music, teamwork, and faithfulness.

May God bless him with an abundance of memories that will bring joy to him.

SCHOOL FEES DUEAll fees due to St. Peter need to be current to receive report cards, transcripts, and record transfers. If you are enrolled in Summer Days, all school fees must be current to attend. This also includes and cafeteria lunch fees. Watch for notes coming home with that information. The pieces are beginning to come together, and I love seeing how the students are attacking the music and learning it quickly. It is a blessing to hear their voices continuing to grow and develop!

Middle School Music EdWe learned about improvisation in Jazz this week. The students had the opportunity to improvise solos on Orff instruments set up in a blues scale. I am enjoying working with the kids on this!

English Grade SixText Pronouns, pronouns, everywhere! We are enjoying the variety and the flexibility of our beloved pronouns.Vocabulary Next week is the one! It is the final week of formal vocabulary study for the school year! We will be completing ARU13-15, and then we are done, done, done. . . for now.

Composition Wanted25: Pictures of the handsome and the beautiful to complete our memoirs.Our fictional narratives are taking shape. Thursday we will hone our edited drafts, receive the rubric, and prepare the final drafts for submission.English Grade SevenText We have turned our attention to prepositions, conjunctions, interjections, and complex sentence structures.Vocabulary During the week of May 9, we will conclude our formal vocabulary study with the completion and testing of BRU13-15.Composition Our opinion pieces are progressing. We will complete our peer review sheets and inch ever closer to completing the final draft.

6th Grade Literature:

1. Students should have a new AR book, which will be due May 27

1. We are starting our King Arthur unit. Most of the reading will be done in class. Check the Google homework document for specific assignments.

7th Grade Literature:

1. We are reading The Adventures of Ulysses. Students have been assigned a chapter to summarize, and each student will complete one drawing and one summary for the one chapter that has been assigned to them. We will do most of the reading in class, and have periodic comprehension quizzes to cover all of the chapters. As we read, they should be completing the graphic organizer to help them keep track of characters and events.

1. Everyone should choose a final AR book, which is due on May 27th.

8th Grade Literature:

1. Students will have received their Book Club/AR books, which will make great reading on the airplane! These are due the last week of May, and everyone will have an opportunity to work with other students to discuss these books.

1. There is a final Anne Frank essay due on Monday, May 16th.

7thGrade ReligionWe began our study of the rule of Israelites by the kings with a lesson on Samuel and the anointing of the first king Saul. We also had a lesson on the familiar story of David and Goliath. Memory next week will be on Wednesday and Friday.

Here is the scoop for the upcoming week:

1. 6th grade period 1 We will reviewing the 6th grade book. Students will be reviewing all that we have learned and studied this year. Once we have finished the class will be getting a new math book.

1. 6th grade period 2 -Next week will continue working on writing words to equations and learning about the distributive property. Students will be learning how to solve multi-step equations and combining like terms.

1. 7th grade -We will continue working on chapter 2 of the algebra book. Students will be adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing negative numbers. We will be studying absolute value, distributive property, and like terms.

1. 8th grade -We will continue working in chapter 9 and looking ahead to chapter 10 also. We will be studying properties of radicals, parabolas, and the quadratic formula. Students will also be adding, subtracting, and multiplying polynomials.

We are done with Chapter 7 and will review and take a test over that chapter next week Thursday (since they will not have class on Tuesday or Wednesday). Students should work to complete review problems over the chapter to prepare for the test. Then we will head into Chapter 8 for simplification fun! :~)

When we return from DC, we will jump back into the Algebra 2 book for some extension of topics that we learned this year. Lots with radicals and simplification of such.

In 6th gradewe are finishing up our unit on European exploration. Then we are learning about the Spanish conquest in the Americas, and the colonies in Central and South America.

Science in the News Did you knowabout some tips that can help protect you from ultraviolet rays that can cause skin cancer? Never use a tanning bed as it can increase melanoma risk by 75 percent. Outdoor activities should be avoided between the hours of 10 A.M. and 2:00 P.M. when the suns rays are strongest. Never use a sunscreen with less than a 30 SPF and apply it no more than 15 minutes before going outside. Also, it should be reapplied every 60-90 minutes.

6th GradeWe have finished our study of the factors affecting weather and will be having an open study guide test on Monday over this unit. Next week we will be spending a few days learning more about Earths atmosphere before we begin our last unit of the school year on earthquakes and volcanoes. This unit will culminate in the building of volcanoes in class.7th GradeWe began our unit on viruses and bacteria learning about the shapes, sizes, and functions of viruses and bacteria along with how they impact our world today. Next week we will look at the protist kingdom before we begin our final unit of the school year that includes our dissections of earthworms and frogs.
