Middle School ChoirWe began our Spring Fine Arts Concert music this week. Although we have limited rehearsal time (9 rehearsals!), I am confident that the students will master our pieces for this event. We also voted on a third song for our Spring Fine Arts Concert this week. The results are in, and we will be singing “Waka, Waka.” I cannot wait to see the energy that the students will bring to this piece!

outside of class if you have a lot to do, or I will give you about ten

minutes next week.

Spanish 2: We worked more on grammar today. Next week we will

break down the verbs 'ser' and 'estar' so that they make some more

English – Grade SixText – We are beyond the book!  We are learning all there is to know about verb tenses, including three of them that are not even covered in the text.  Since we use them in our speaking and writing, however, we are including them in our discussion and in our work.   Vocabulary – Once again, we are encountering a review vocabulary unit, ARU10-12. Composition – Wanted17:  Pictures of the handsome and the beautiful to complete our memoirs. We are currently reviving several in-process pieces; we are also engaging in some creative word and concept building to hone our composition skills.

English – Grade SevenText – We are focusing our laser attention on adjectives and adverbs and are feeling quite successful in the process.Vocabulary – Vocabulary unit BRU10-12 has our undivided attention. Composition – Will it be a Christmas memory?  Will it be an ordered objects narrative?  Which choice will each seventh grader make?  It remains to be seen. . .

English – Grade EightText – Although we are ready to test our knowledge of pronouns, we are waiting until our mini March Madness has passed before we do so.  We are about to immerse ourselves in adverbs, though.

Vocabulary – Next week C13 commands our attention. Composition – Only one more research paper due date to meet – the one for the final draft.  With this in mind, class composition time is focusing on our personal brochures.

6 th Grade Literature: Poetry

Our third nonfiction selection that deals with immigration is due on Monday, March

7th.  There is an accompanying worksheet, also due 3/7, that asks students to list the

different challenges faced by the people in the article and how those challenges are

met.  We will have a set of small group discussions about these articles on Tuesday

and then begin another set of nonfiction articles that we will work on throughout the

week, as we start to compare the different organizational styles and language

techniques of the writers.

7 th Grade Literature:   The Magician’s Nephew

We are in the second half of The Magician’s Nephew, with the next writing piece due

on 3/8.  In this part of the book, we are looking at the ways that the novel is a

Christian allegory, and how that can apply to our lives.  We continue to have regular

reading quizzes on each chapter.  Check the Google homework document for

specific assignments.  The Magician’s Nephew reading and assignment schedule is

at the bottom of that Google doc.  Left the book at school?  No worries!  Most older

texts have been transcribed and can be found in their entirety, for free, online

through Project Gutenberg.  Google “Magician’s Nephew Full Text” and you will find

it.

8 th Grade Literature:   Romeo and Juliet

We have an Act 3 writing assignment due on Tuesday, 3/8, asking students to find

examples of different literary devices in the text.  This week we will work on reading

through Act 4 in class.  There will be a quiz on Act 4 when we have finished the

reading.  Check the Google homework document for specific dates.

Science in the News…          Did you know… that American Astronaut Scott Kelly returned to Earth on Tuesday, March 2 after spending an American record of 340 days in space aboard the International Space Station (ISS)?  He landed in the barren steppes of Kazakhstan aboard a Soyuz space capsule with fellow Russian astronaut Mikhail Kornienko.

6th Grade    We began our unit on climate and climate regions of the world with lessons on the difference between weather and climate; the factors that affect climate; and the major types of world climates. 7th Grade               We started our unit on genetic disorders learning about the types of traits and the genes that control these.  We have learned about blood types and have learned about pedigrees and how they are used in determining genetic traits/disorders in families.

8th Grade                 After reviewing physical and chemical characteristics and changes, we started learning how to write and balance chemical equations which builds on the concepts and materials learned in the last unit.  We also conducted a mini-lab on the differences between exothermic and endothermic reactions.
