Reflexive Verbs = actions one does to/for oneself

In English, pronouns that indicated that the subject of the sentence does something to/for himself or herself are called reflexive...

In English reflexive pronouns end in -self (-selves)... – this represents an action that you are doing to yourself…..

I dress myself.

I wash my hands.

My mom dries her hair (herself).

We brush our teeth.

The small children washed themselves.

• If you are washing something that is attached, you need to add the word “me.”

The reflexive pronouns in Spanish are somewhat like the indirect object pronouns. Instead of le and les, however, the reflexive pronoun se is used.

Me gusta | (yo) me lavo

te gusta | (tú) te lavas

le gusta | (Ana) se lava

nos gusta | (nosotros) nos lavamos

les gusta | (Ellos) se lavan

How do you get those forms?

• The infinitive has a –se attached to it to show that the subject is doing something to him/herself.

• Drop the –se.• Change the verb as

usual.• Put the appropriate

reflexive pronoun in front of the verb.
