The SC2520 range of Saccharometers is made to the old Customs and Excise Notice 39 specification. They are 250mm in length with a range of 10 specific gravity and 0.2 subdivisions. Hydrometers and Alcoholometers for Distillers

BSI Kitemark on Alcohol Hydrometers

If you are using standard hydrometers to BS 5470, the BSI Kitemark on your hydrometer is an assurance of quality, accuracy, and reliability. It means that conformity to the standard is continually monitored and BSI independently tests samples to make sure this is the case. It means you can be certain of the accuracy of the hydrometers to ±0.2 kg/m³ without having to send them off to be calibrated. An inaccurate measurement can cause problems and cost money in duty declarations, so it is important to use measuring instruments you can trust.

Kitemarked Alcohol Hydrometers to BS 5470

These are the hydrometers you require for testing bottled spirits according to the UK Spirits Regulations.

They are made to the BS5470 specification, and are suitable for spirits duty declarations when used with the Practical Alcohol Tables Volume 2 and a suitable thermometer. They are 300mm long overall, with a torpedo shaped bulb. The hydrometers have a range of 20kg/m³ between 780/800kg/m³ and 980/1000kg/m³ at 20°C. Graduations are every 0.2kg/m³. For use in Ethanol/Water mixtures only, not suitable for spirits with added sugars.

Accessories for Alcohol Hydrometers

The Practical Alcohol Tables Volume 2 (B0260) is used to convert temperature and hydrometer reading to percentage alcohol by volume at 20C.

The carrying case (B0270) will hold 6 hydrometers and one thermometer safely in a foam plastic lining. Spare linings are available (B0270/L).

The glass trial jar for use with the alcohol hydrometers has a 320mm internal depth and 76mm internal diameter, and is available both with (BJ3480) and without (BJ3480/NL) a lip. Capacity 1.5 litre.

The B0446 is a 245mm thermometer, red spirit filled, graduated on glass, with a 320mm stainless steel back designed to hang on the inside of a glass hydrometer jar. Hydrometers measuring Ethanol % vol at 20°C, for use in distillers’ spirit safes. Spirit safe hydrometers measuring kg/m³ can be made to order. We can supply spirit safe bowls and glasses to order. WARNING: Hydrometers graduated in % ethanol should not be used without correcting for temperature. If used with a thermometer accurate to within 0.5°C and the Practical Alcohol Tables Volume 1, you can make an accurate determination of ethanol content. If used without correcting for temperature, they will only give a rough estimate of alcohol content (no better than ±2% at typical bottling strength). Please note that all alcoholometers are only suitable for use with distilled spirits, are cannot give a reading in beers, wines or liqueurs.

Brix and Plato Saccharometers

These saccharometers measure percentage sugar by weight at 20°C in either the Brix (for winemakers) or Plato (for brewers) scales. The difference between the Brix and Plato scales is never more than 0.002%; this is far less than the smallest division of a saccharometer the two scales can be used interchangeably. They have easy to read double scales, are individually numbered, and are certified to traceable standards. They are for use in sugar solutions at a surface tension of 45mN/m.

BS718 Hydrometers

These Hydrometers are made to BS 718:1991 and measure density in g/ml. The standard series hydrometers are for general purpose use. The SP series are for use with oil and fuels – typical densities are 0.73g/ml for petrol, 0.83g/ml for diesel and 0.88 g/ml for biodiesel. Hydrometer Jar Thermometers

Available in either brass or stainless-steel cases, these have an adjustable clip which allows them to be fixed to the top of a hydrometer jar so that the hydrometer and thermometer readings can be taken at the same time.

All of our precision hydrometers and Saccharometers come with our own certificate of conformance. This states the specification to which the hydrometer or Saccharometer is made, and the traceable standards it has been checked against. This gives a record of checks traceable to national standards as required by ISO9000 quality systems.

For the highest accuracy in reading hydrometers, a certificate of calibration with corrections should be used. We can provide certificates with corrections at two or three points from our own testing lab, or certificates from external UKAS accredited testing laboratories. Brewers' and Distillers' Gauging Rods Rods are graduated every 2mm and figured every 1cm in accordance with requirements of HM Customs and Excise. They are normally made of seasoned wood and have a 25x25mm section, but can also be made in stainless steel with a 19x19mm section. The maximum length of a one-piece rod is 250cm. Safe Carbonation Tester

The B2090 Safe Carbonation Tester is designed to ensure operator safety when making CO2 tests on products in glass bottles. It has a brass canister with hinged cap, pressure gauge B1138 and Side Snift, made to suit individual bottle size. The bottle is completely and safely enclosed during the whole process. The hole that is made in the cap will accept the dial type bottle thermometer B2045. Please send a full sample capped bottle with order.

The B2095 rotary holder is a wall mounting back plate with ball race and bearings to take the Safe Carbonation Tester to prevent operator fatigue, particularly when large bottles are tested. By controlling the number of swings, greater consistency is obtained than with hand shaking, providing that the back plate is mounted vertically. A special boss is incorporated in the canister of the Safe Tester and locates in the centre of the ball race where it is retained by a quick release knob. Instruments for Stocktakers Bar Spirit Testing Hydrometer Set

For use by Trading Standards, and stock takers in hotels, clubs and managed houses. The set comprises a 130mm Glass Hydrometer with glass jar and thermometer in a pocket case complete with chart for checking pure spirits at retail strength to detect adulteration. A 50ml sample is required for the standard jar. All components are available as replacements. A separate leaflet is available on request. Both the hydrometer and thermometer are individually numbered and the hydrometer is certified to a traceable standard, and available with a certificate of calibration.

Alcohol Test Kit for beers, ciders, wines and liqueurs

The alcohol content of beer, cider, wine, and some liqueuers can be calculated from the readings of two instruments: a hydrometer and a Zeiss refractometer. Suitable for ABV up to about 20% depending on the sugar content of the drink. Less than 150ml of sample are required for the hydrometer, and only a few drops for the refractometer. By following the simple instructions a reading with an accuracy of +/- 0.5% ethanol by volume can be determined. Not suitable for customs declarations where higher precision is required.
