REEFTON RESTORATION PROJECT

ABOUT THE REEFTON RESTORATION PROJECT

After 10 years of operation, the former Globe Progress Mine transitioned from operations to closure and rehabilitation in 2016 and is now known as the Reefton Restoration Project.

The Reefton Restoration Project is re-establishing ecosystems with indigenous species in a new post-mining landscape. Once complete post-restoration areas will consist primarily of forested areas populated by Beech and Manuka species, complemented by native conifers including Rimu and Miro trees.

Since commencing progressive rehabilitation, the project has completed over 101 hectares of restoration, including the planting of approximately 603,000 seedlings, with a further 300,000 more planned for planting during the next 3 years.

The Reefton Restoration Project includes a comprehensive closure and rehabilitation programme with works including:

• Removal of Process Plant and infrastructure;

• Water treatment and ground preparation;

• Waste rock reshaping and landscaping;

• Backfilling operations;

• Spreading of topsoil and planting trees; and

• Pest and weed control.

Once complete, the management of the site will be returned to the Department of Conservation, as required by the Resource Consent.

REEFTON RESTORATION PROJECT

REEFTON SITE FAST FACTSThe former Globe Progress Mine site is located within the Victoria Forest Park, operated under an Access Agreement with the Department of Conservation and was developed on the site of four historic mines: Globe Progress, General Gordon, Empress and Souvenir.

Originally, mining was conducted on the site via two adits developed from 1876 by The Union Quartz Mining Company.

In 2003, OceanaGold was formed and took over the asset. OceanaGold commenced open pit mining in 2007 and operated the site for a 10-year period.

During the mining operation the site directly employed around 190 people and supported regional contractors and suppliers.

The main pit is 275m deep from highest point of natural surface.

OceanaGold commenced transitioning the Globe Progress Mine into care and maintenance in 2016 and is now in the restoration phase.

The site processing plant is located at Cornishtown, the site of a once-thriving township of 300 people. After processing at Cornishtown, the concentrate was railed to the Macraes Operations Site for further refinement.

During operations the average total material moved each year was approximately 23 million tonnes.

During operation produced between 60- 80,000 ounces of gold each year from 1.4 - 1.7 million tonnes of ore at an average grade of 1.7grams of gold per tonne Globe Progress produced 610,000 ounces of gold over 10 years.

Rock hosting the gold mineralisation are 480-million-year-old Ordovician sedimentary rocks (formed on an ancient sea bed) and are some of the oldest rocks in New Zealand.
