IN.FORM SESSIONS -

BURN FAT/BE FIT/FOR LIFE We are seeing good results..and partici-pants are excited. Some of the partici-pants after one week on the program are seeing more energy, their hunger is satis-fied, body fat percentage down, hydra-tion levels up, muscle mass up, visceral fat down, metabolic age down. That is cause for celebration!!! Come and join the fun...Mondays at 6 P.M. or Wednes-days at 5 P.M. Another question for Dr. Luis Pacheco...Why is weight management important? Some of the benefits associ-ated with better weight management include: REDUCED RISK FOR HEART AT-TACKS: Did you know that losing just 10 pounds can result in a significant risk reduction for heart attacks? It's true. The healthier your coronary arteries, the less likelihood of having a heart attack. BETTER BLOOD PRESSURE CONTROL: Losing weight can also have a direct ben-eficial effect on blood pressure. LOWERED RISK FOR SLEEP APNEA: Many of my patients who suffer from sleep ap-

nea are also overweight. This is oftentimes due to narrowing of one's airway because of the extra tissue around the wind-pipe walls. The more overweight you are, the greater the po-tential for airway narrowing and the worsening of sleep ap-nea. Remember the IN.FORM program is for a healthy lifestyle..not just weight management. PLAY IT SAFE WITH FIREWORKS By Denise Brilliant, N.P.

Among the popular outdoor summertime activities that often accompanies picnics, family

gatherings and other parties is the use of fireworks to help punctuate a celebration. Of

course, Independence Day celebrations prompt many to exhibit their own pyrotechnic

displays. Whether it’s the Fourth of July or any other holiday or gathering, anytime fire-

works are being used, it’s very important the safety of everyone involved is taken into

account. There is significant risk of serious injury – particularly to eyes and extremities –

when using fireworks and a high degree of caution should be used when engaged with

such devices. Injuries from fireworks, especially homemade or illegal fireworks, are all

too common. Young children account for a majority of injuries related to fireworks. Ac-

cording to the United States Eye Injury Registry, approximately 12,000 Americans are

treated in emergency departments annually for firework-related injuries, and many of

those injuries involve the eye. A few tips to keep in mind:

• All fireworks are dangerous and extreme caution should be exercised when using.

• Firecrackers, bottle rockets, sparklers and Roman candles account for

most fireworks injuries.

• Sparklers may seem harmless, but burn up to 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit.

For children under the age of 5, sparklers account for three-quarters of fire-

works injuries.

• In case of an eye injury, do not touch, rub or press the injured eye. Seek

immediate care from an ophthalmologist or hospital emergency room.

The safest option is to leave fireworks in the hands of professionals who take extensive

safety precautions when producing their spectacular light displays. If you or loved ones

are going to use fireworks, remember to exercise caution and follow any safety precau-

tions that may be included on fireworks packaging. Losing one’s sight or a finger is a

high price to pay for a few minutes of fun. Summer and all the fun times that come with

it can be the best days of the year, especially when celebrated safely.

Denise Brilliant, NP, is a nurse practitioner at Aurora Health Center in Reedsville. To schedule an appointment, call (920) 754-4337.
