Reduce, Reuse, Recycle:

Tips for Seychelles

Easy ideas of what you can do at home, at school and even at work to help divert waste from our landfills.

ORGANIC WASTE: This category of waste includes

left over foods, kitchen scraps such as vegetable and fruit

peels, and green plant materials such as grass and other garden clippings. You

can always feed your pets leftover foods. Kitchen scraps and green waste can easily

be composted. Visit our website* for composting tips .

WASTE OIL: if you fry a lot of food, you can save the used oil so that it can be converted to biodiesel which can replace diesel fuel in your car or truck. For more information, please contact STAR Seychelles (4386060).

SCRAP PAPER/CARD BOARD: You need to bring your waste paper to Navin’s Paper Recycling Centre (271-7170) , but if you have large quantities they may collect it. Otherwise you can shred the paper and add it to your compost. You could also donate old magazines and cereal boxes to your local school or crèche, but check with them first if they are in need of it.

MISCELLANEOUS: Check with schools and churches if they re-use used clothing pieces as rags or craft materials, so these can be dropped off there. Otherwise, used clothing that is still in good condition can be dropped of at the Red Cross Society (437-4543) or Mr Vincent Alcindor (278-1806) for redistribution to families who need them. The Soroptimist Club (252-144) holds a Jumble Sale every 3 months, 4 times per year, and donations of toys, books, clothes, and other household items that are still in good condition will be much appreciated.

ELECTRONIC WASTE: Have you considered selling or giving away your old computer or phone next time you upgrade to the latest model? Another option is to donate your electronic

waste to Leevac Trading(251-2587), or Cut All Pty Ltd (2787-529) for export and recycling.

OLD BATTERIES: These are extremely toxic to the environment and need to be discarded correctly. All batteries, from your watch, calculator and even your car can be dropped off at the

following businesses: Leevac Trading (251-2587) Surya Enterprise (251-1329), MEC Trad-ing (434-4912), or Rush Metal (251-2354).

ALUMINIUM CANS: These can be sold for a small refund each at some redeem centres. If this is too much trouble, you can sort them into a separate clear bag and place next to a public bin for someone else to take for the refund! Aluminium cans can be taken to Samlo & Sons (Sey) Pty Ltd Tel: 2873104/4266725, Leevac Trading (251-2587), Surya Enterprise

(251-1329), the Anse Royal Reedem Centre ( 271-2318) or Rush Metal (251-2354).

SCRAP METAL: There are a number of scrap metal collectors who export waste for recycling. In most cases, you will need to bring your old tins, washing machine or even old cars to Providence, but if you have large quantities they may collect it. You might even get paid for your waste! For more information, you can contact Samlo & Sons (2873104/4266725), Leevac Trading (251-2587), Surya Enterprise (2511329), or Rush Metal (251-2354).

PET BOTTLES: These can be sold at designated redeem centres at Providence, Anse Royale, St. Louis, Praslin and La Digue*. If this is too much trouble, you can simply sort them into a separate clear bag and place it next to a public bin for someone else to take for the refund. Harini and Co Pty Ltd (252-3355) is located at Providence and they accept all PET bottles. DE Recycling (251-4892) and the Anse Royal Reedem Centre ( 271-2318) also accepts all PET bottles

GLASS WASTE: You can redeem your Seybrew beer bottles for sr2 and DE Recycling (251-4892) takes back tomato sauce bottles. Your old jam jars can be reused for making pickles or as a candle holder during a power cut. All glass containers can be donated to Rogan’s Construction ([email protected]), where they will be crushed. The crushed glass will then be mixed with cement for use in the construction industry in Seychelles.

USED CAR TYRES: Used car tyres can be traded by MEC (Pty) LTD (434-4912) at Le Rocher. You can landscape your garden with tyre flower beds as well as have a cool addition for the children by simply suspending the old tyre from a tree branch. Try to repair your inner tube rather than buying a new one. If that doesn't work, then you can always donate the tube to Kaju Studio (258-3428) in Takamaka who can refashion the tyres into other items.
