Safeguarding & Welfare Teaching, Learning & Assessment Leadership & Management Forums, Networks & Meetings Becoming a childminder
For any of the courses, forums and meetings listed in this brochure you will need to complete an Autumn 2016 booking form – this can be downloaded at http://find.redbridge.gov.uk/earlyyearstraining.
When placing a booking please take care to ensure you will have sufficient staff cover and that you are booking the most appropriate member of your team on the course.
Please return your completed booking form(s) to [email protected]. Please note that all bookings are allocated on a first come first served basis.
Training for those with multiple Ofsted registrations
If your business has more than one Ofsted registration number then you must complete a separate booking form for each registered setting. Staff should be booked onto training under the setting they work for.
Checking your bookings
Once you have received your booking confirmation you are responsible for checking that this is accurate and alerting the service to any errors.
Please also check your course confirmation for the booking status (booked, waiting list, etc.). Each course candidate will need to bring a copy of the course confirmation to show to the trainer on arrival. If you are not on the course register or able to show evidence of your confirmation for the course you will not be admitted to the course.
How to cancel or amend your booking
In order to cancel a booking without charge you will need to provide written notice at least 7 days before the date of the course. The email will need to specify the course and the name of the candidate who will not be attending.

Bespoke Training
Bespoke training may be provided by members of the EYCIT team on request (subject to availability). If you are an Amber or Red RAG assessed Redbridge setting and this is training that has been recommended you may have one such training session per year free of charge. If you are a Green RAG assessed Redbridge setting or you request training that has not been particularly recommended as a priority by EYCIT then you will need to pay £10 per person.
There needs to be a minimum of 10 people attending so small settings may want to join together with others to make this viable (except Makaton Taster sessions that may have between 5 and 15 delegates attending). You will be invoiced once the training has been completed, separate to your termly training invoice. If less than 10 persons attend the course a minimum of £100.00 will be invoiced.
Complaints procedure
What if a customer isn’t happy with the service they receive?
If you are not happy with the service that you receive whether it’s about the Early Years Service, training delivered or current policies and procedures then you can take the following steps:
In the first instance talk to the person that you have dealt with in Early Years or the trainer and explain to them why you are unhappy and what you want to happen to put things right.
If you remain unhappy with how they deal with your concerns, or you do not wish to talk to the person concerned (because for instance your complaint is about them), then please contact Dianne Borien, Head of Early Years in writing to [email protected].
Your complaint will be dealt with promptly and you will receive an answer within ten working days.
If you remain unhappy then you can follow the further steps in the Council’s procedure described in the booklet ‘How to complain about our services’.
You can request that a copy of the booklet is sent to you; you can view it or download it from the council’s website at www.redbridge.gov.uk; or you can pick up a copy from any council office.

COURSE 10 SOAP Approach to Safeguarding Sue Overton Applied Practice (SOAP) is a new approach to safeguarding training which enables delegates to see what safeguarding looks and feels like in practice at a fictitious nursery called Snuggles. Key learning is skilfully woven into two interlocking story lines where delegates witness staff facing safeguarding dilemmas and agonising over what action to take. It’s like watching a serious case review before it has happened. Dramatic clips are interspersed with opportunities to watch an expert panel tease out the issues and discuss steps to take. Learning is reinforced through discussion; practical tasks; reflective questions; handouts and useful links. During the two sessions delegates will explore: • How the practitioner’s perspective affects Safeguarding • Why things can go wrong • Personal/professional boundaries • The paperwork • Legal duty of care • Safeguarding quiz • Common Assessment Framework • Making a referral There are three methods of accessing this training to suit the needs of different practitioners and settings:
1. Online – Delegates are provided with a code to enable them to access all the video clips and handouts online. An online certificate is provided on successful completion of the course.
2. Classroom style – Delegates attend two half day sessions (2 x 3.5 hours) led by Early Years Improvement Officers or Locality Leads. All delegates also have individual online access to follow up activities in their own time
3. Training the Trainers – Delegates attend a 4 hour session delivered by Early Years Improvement Officers or Locality Leads where they will be given:
• Guidance about how to organise effective in-house training • A course outline and training materials to use in their own setting • Opportunities to view video clips, trial activities and rehearse discussion scenarios
This is a unique professional development opportunity for lead practitioners to develop staff training skills and to provide all staff in their setting with the skills, knowledge and confidence to deal with safeguarding concerns. Please specify clearly on your booking form which delivery method you are requesting. Audience All staff within PVI settings. School nursery staff and Childminders are welcome to attend, however
the scenarios provided within the course relate to a nursery setting Settings registered outside of Redbridge and those registered with a Childminding Agency should enquire about this course by email to [email protected].
