e started our magical Geography journey on the 18th of March aka Red Nose Day, but Mr Wright forgot to

wear red! Shocking! We then carried on our magical journey in the Rooks Heath mini-bus to North Norfolk;

Mr Wright’s home of the pirates – according to Ms Lane because their accents ‘Argggggh’ like that of

pirates.

When we got to the youth hostel, we didn’t have any time to unpack. While the glorious girls got the new

rooms on the ground floor, the boisterous boys had to walk up three flights of stairs and travel behind hidden doors in order

to get to their rooms. Ha ha!

We went to the salt marshes where we saw a lot of green. There were many wide creeks that Mr Wright purposely forced

us to jump over. *gives him an evil stare*. We did our work and then continued to make our way back. However,

Khushboo took an extra journey when she decided it would be fun to bum-slide right into the creek. While Mr Wright

helped her, everyone else laughed. *mumbles profanities under her breath*.

That night, we decided it would be fun to explore the quaint town of Sheringham – a town in literally three roads. However,

all that was open was Sainsbury’s, the Kebab shop, and the Pubs. We went to Sainsbury’s…

The next day after a wonderful breakfast, we went to Cromer and also explored East Runton – Mr Wright’s home; (if you

want the address for Halloween, we’ll give it to you). After exploring Cromer and completing our fieldwork which

consisted of many surveys and questionnaires, Mr Wright kindly took us for a hike up the huge hill of Sheringham. From

the top of it, we could see the whole town and the magical sea.

What was our adventure for that night you ask? Well, after two hours of studying in the classroom, we went back to our

rooms yawning and rubbing our eyes. However, we never got to sleep. Why? Leslie Pang made us watch ‘The Ring’. He

then continued to scare us through-out the movie by sliding the curtains open and flashing his torch in our faces.

That day we visited the four beaches: Sea Palling, Happisburgh (pronounced Haysborough according to the teachers! Ugh).

We also went to Overstrand and then back to the beach of Cromer. At Cromer beach, Ms Lane disappeared off the horizon;

even our geographical maps could not locate her. Mr Wright and Leslie had a rock throwing contest while we waited for her

to return. Mr Wright almost knocked us out with his impression of a discus with a huge rock. (Dude, your aim sucks!!!).

That night, Wrighty and Lane took us to the magnificent Movieplex (a rundown cinema in Cromer – like you see in the

80s). We watched ‘True Grit’. Talk about gory!

On the final day of our magical journey, we visited

the cute and traditional town of Burnham Market. One

of Ms Lane’s ‘vuval’ (rural) rebranded areas. Hehe.

There was a bakery, a book shop and a HAT shop

filled with hats and shoes. OMG. It was sooooooo

cool. We had so much fun on this voyage of

‘magicness’ thanks to the wonderful Mr Wright and

Ms Lane. We love you. Then we came home…

Khushboo Govind Yr 12

Ms Lane would like to add that the students did do

a lot of Geography work! It was not all fun and

games as Khushboo would have you believe!

And….not sure Mr Wright would be impressed by

“We saw a lot of ‘green’ on the ‘saltmarsh’”!!!

Good times!

would like to thank all parents and carers for their support in helping us with our new mobile phone initiative. For

the most part, students have accepted the ruling and it certainly ensures that phones brought into college and kept in

bags are safer. Lessons are also not disrupted by inappropriate use. May I remind you that if a phone is confiscated, it

will not be returned until the end of the next day and must be collected by a parent or carer or other designated adult.

Sixth Form students may collect phones themselves.

n February 9th 2011, 10 AS Level Geography students and 2 members of staff from Rooks Heath visited Canary Wharf

to gain an insight into urban rebranding. The purpose of the visit was to carry out primary fieldwork and research in different areas of Canary Wharf and the

London Docklands. We could then see how much it had changed as a result of rebranding after its decline in the late 1900s, and

what the effects of redevelopment and reimaging in the area had been. When we first arrived in Canary Wharf, we all felt very out of place, as the people around us were all dressed so smartly, talking

into their Smart phones. Then there we were, in our t-shirts, jeans and jogging bottoms! In the first place we visited, there were three massive skyscrapers: (Citi Group, HSBC and One Canada Square (otherwise known

as Canary Wharf Tower)). We were all amazed at the scale of these buildings, and took lots of photos. We discovered that mostly

all of the shops in the area were upmarket shops, to attract affluent business professionals to the area. The environment of the

Docklands also made an impression of wealth-bronze statues and marble buildings, as well as modern and contemporary architec-

ture. However, as the day went on, we found that some of the heritage of the Docklands had been kept as a reminder of its inter-

esting history, such as the old cranes and the warehouses, now home to the London Docklands Museum. After looking around the rebranded area of the Docklands, we spent some time in an area where rebranding was only just

beginning-large cranes and diggers were working on a drained dock. The scenery around the building site also showed us what

the rebranded Docklands had looked like before its regeneration, and it was amazing to see how far the area had come in such a

short space of time. We then had to get on with some business and finance surveys, shop surveys in the busy shopping centre, questionnaires and

other surveys as primary fieldwork. We also took a look in the window of an estate agent, and discovered that an apartment in the

area would (on average) set you back about £900,000! The museum was our final destination, and there we carried out more research, took notes and took a few photos, including one

inside an Anderson shelter! The day soon came to an end, and then we were all free to make our own way home. Overall, I found the day a very interesting

and enjoyable experience, and I would recommend it to anyone wishing to do AS Level Geography. I’d just like to take this

opportunity to thank Ms Lane and Mr Wright on behalf of all the other Geography students for organising the visit. It has

provided us with an invaluable experience that will help us greatly in our summer exams! Laura Gardner-12 Red

n Enterprise project by 9 White.

This was led by a team of 9 White students and helped in 3 Year 9

Design Technology Textiles lessons (working as a batch production

team) and in lunch time by other year 9 students. Each student who helped will

receive a certificate in assembly.

The team would like to thank all those students, parents and staff who donated

materials or helped with the making. We have completed about 30 bags so far

and are still going!

fter months of solid hard work, rose selling, cake baking and ‘hoodie’ creating, the stage was set for the biggest

music concert Rooks Heath has ever seen! On the 1st of April the 12 Sixth Formers worked their socks off in

bringing you a concert to remember, with the winners set to perform at the O2 arena, with the chance of winning

a once in a life time opportunity of a record contract. Six artists battled it out performing three original songs which would later be decided by the panel of judges, which con-

sisted of Ms Christensen, who has a background of musical history, Martin Powell, who is the Sixth Formers mentor, and

Robert Stephenson, the founder of Blast Beat. Despite being let down by our headline act, the event was still a massive success, with our own Akash Kapoor known as

“Demo” winning the night alongside Sarah Farrell a former student of the college. They will now be put through to the next

round of the competition taking place later this year. Rooks Beat would just like to give a huge thank you to Mrs Girvan for all her hard work involved in Blast Beat, along with

all the teachers who took their time out to help us with the event. We would also like to say thank you to Lisa for all her

amazing work backstage! We would also like to thank you all for coming and supporting us, and apologise for the

disappointment for DotStar not showing up in time for you all to watch. Sophie Ostrowski and Harry Martin.
