Some examples of household hazardous waste (HHW) items are paints and stains, cleaners, poisons, fertilizers, beauty products, and acids. Residents want to do the right thing with their old, HHW, but disposal and recycling options are limited in Pueblo. One day public drop-off events have been

offered in Pueblo in the past, and are very costly.

What to do? Try these steps:

1. Buy only what you need for any home project. Choose the ‘environmentally-

friendly’ version of the item, if available. Use it up until empty!

2. Give leftover item to a family member, neighbor or friend to use.

3. Look for any disposal instructions or an information phone number on the item label. The product manufacturer may be able to provide disposal

advice.

4. Determine if the hazardous item is dried up, or in solid form. It is legal households to dispose of hazardous solids/powders/granules in their weekly

trash service (double bag and tie or tape closed).

5. If the item is a liquid, make it a solid (stabilize): Open the container in a well-ventilated area and carefully pour in fresh cat litter (clay absorbent), then replace container lid and gently mix. Double bag item, then tie or tape bag closed, and place in trash bin. This process reduces the chance of spills in

the trash truck or leakage at the waste transfer station or landfill.
