GOING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

As a district hospital, Modoc Medical Center (MMC) is proud to partner with our district members and community, to provide our patients and visitors with a tradition of quality care, innovative and responsible use of resources, and personalized, compassionate care. A successful ballot measure formed the Last Frontier Healthcare District in August 2010 to create its own entity and separate from the County of Modoc. The district is doing business as Modoc Medical Center. Our governing Board of Directors is made up of five key community leaders to provide guidance to our Chief Executive Officer and management team.

For over a century, MMC has delivered the healthcare needs to our community. Today, it is a 16-bed, critical access hospital providing emergency services, offering family practice medicine while also operating a skilled nursing facility, a rural healthcare clinic, physical therapy and other ancillary services including general surgery, lab services, diagnostic imaging, wound care and ambulance service.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

Alturas is filled with events throughout the year for the young and old to look forward to. Our close-knit community comes together to create these events for all to enjoy. In the spring, we have the Children’s Fair, where families can come for a day of low to no cost fun with live entertainment, youth-inspired activities and yummy treats. The spring also brings our Home and Garden show, which showcases local businesses with products that can be used to improve your home and/or garden. In the summer, the community partakes in its much anticipated Fandango Days. This is our 4th of July celebration that includes a street dance, classic car cruise, parade, fireworks display and a celebration at the park with live music, vendor booths and various food and drink options. We also have our Modoc District Fair in the summer, located in Cedarville. This fair is jam packed with rides, rodeo events, derby car demolition, dancing and that delicious fair food we are all guilty of loving. We don’t let the colder weather keep us indoors. In the fall we have our annual Bird and Hot Air Balloon Festival. In the morning, you can enjoy a pancake breakfast and then go for a ride in a hot air balloon or stay on the ground and watch the dozens of balloons fill the early morning sky with their vibrant colors.

INVESTING IN OUR YOUTH

Modoc Joint Unified School District (MJUSD) is a K-12 district that offers an elementary school, a middle school, a high school, a continuation school, and adult education, as well as one small rural school located in an outlying area. MJUSD provides students with a quality education by leading, assisting, and motivating all students to establish and achieve goals to become responsible and productive citizens.

MJUSD provides its students with numerous extra-curricular activities including drama, academic clubs, student government, Future Farmers of America (FFA), band and choir, as well as a highly successful and competitive athletic program.

In June of 2013, Modoc High School made it on the list of, “Best High Schools in America” by US News and World Report. 21,000 schools were evaluated and 4,620 received the honor of being selected.

WEATHER

In Alturas, we are fortunate to be able to enjoy all four seasons. Our summers are warm, in winter we enjoy some snow, and our spring and fall are just right.

DIG IN!

If you couldn’t already tell by the events we have, Modoc’ers love to eat. When we aren’t chowing down at an event, we have many local restaurants and shops to keep us satisfied.

After you’ve enjoyed the balloons, you can head over to the park where there is a celebration of the many birds in our area with informational booths, art, and food. The community is a big supporter of athletics at Modoc High School. On a Friday night in the fall, you can come out to a football game and cheer on our mighty Braves or to a volleyball game to root for our Lady Braves. In the winter, we have a Winter Fest that includes craft fairs, an after-dark Christmas light parade on Main St. and a tree lighting where you can keep warm near a bonfire with a hot cup of cocoa.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Alturas is framed by distinctive geology and views of a timeless landscape. The Modoc National Forest is a place where solitude and recreation come together. Modoc encompasses over twenty-five camp grounds at various settings and elevations to suit any of your recreational needs including hiking, backpacking, and bicycling trails. The forest also provides lake and pond fishing as well as river and stream fishing where you can catch trout, catfish, bass and many more varieties of fish. Modoc County is an ideal place for hunting, whether it be for big game, water fowl or small game. The area is known for its trophy mule deer, antelope and its developing elk population. How about an affordable round of golf? Modoc provides its residents and guests with two courses to chose from where you can relax and brush up on your game.
