WINDOW WASHING TIPS

Use vertical strokes when washing windowsoutside and horizontal for inside windows. Thisway you can tell which side has the streaks.

Straight vinegar will get outside windowsreally clean. Don't wash windows on a sunny day. They will dry too quickly and will probably streak.

Another tip is to use air-freshener to cleanmirrors. It does a good job and better still, leaves alovely smell to the shine.

KUDOS

Kudos to our Clubhouse Staff, our TV-7Club and the Volunteer efforts of residents ofHawthorne.

TV-7 presents an immediate contact withevery resident who chooses to tune into this station. It presents a series of messages of interest by way ofthe character generator. A live program ispresented Monday through Friday each week fromSeptember through April each year.

We have been experiencing problems withthe live broadcast for several years. The audiolevels have been maddening. The voice levels ofvarious individuals have been inconsistent. A yearago, HRCA replaced the up front equipment withnew hand held and body microphones, and a newcontrol board. This did not solve the live broadcastissue. Back in November, we asked Ron Klair, oursound expert to track down the source of ourproblems. He spent several days and performedadjustments and corrections.

TV -7 under our new Chairperson, CherylJacobs, has obtained two new items. The first is aDVD player. We now have the ability to playaDVD on TV-7. To sweeten this new amenity,Cheryl has obtained the services of David Wright, son of resident, Barry Wright, in developing a new"lead-in" for the live broadcast. It was used for thefirst time on November 28, 2007. This lead in was

made possible by the use of photographs donated byour resident amateur photographer, Peg Urban. Ifyou have seen this daily introduction to ourprogram, you are aware that this gal has exceptionaltalent. As a result, we enjoy the finest TV showsever presented here at Hawthorne.

Peg's photography enterprise is astounding. She has been recognized by Lake County withpublications using her nature images. The FloridaAudubon Society has published her images of birds.I am particularly appreciative of Peg's support ofthe Pear Association. She and her husband, Hal,spend many hours each week in the restorationefforts at Pear Park. Hal is the Captain ofHawthorne's Honor Guard.

The bottom line is that through thecombined efforts of our staff, the TV-7 volunteersand the cooperation of people in our community wehave corrected what was a long-standing problemand now enjoy good programs. Kudos to all!(Article by George WolQ

A SHORT HISTORY OF "THECLASSICAL MUSIC CLUB"

We, Bill Blaser and Susan Gleason movedto Hawthorne in Jan. 2005 -Bill from Marco Islandand Susan from Rangeley, Maine.

Although separated by a considerable distance theirrelationship blossomed as a result of their greatlove for classical music--especially opera. Both ofthem had grown up being exposed to opera in NewYork City and now have extensive collections ofVCR tapes and the newer-and better- DVD disks-ofoperas, recitals, concerts, ballets, musicals andclassical plays.

They were attracted to Hawthorne for two mainreasons (besides the beauty of the place): there wasa library and an orchestra and it lacked the fanaticpreoccupation with daily golf- as they had noted inother nearby senior parks.

After moving here it was obvious that that oneannual concert by the orchestra (mostly lightclassics) did not satisfy the urges for more exposureto opera and concerts. So it was decided to start amonthly presentation of an opera-on DVD- or arecital or concert by famous soloists and singers. The result was that the audience who came to seean opera from a DVD projected on the large TVscreen in the LemonlLime rooms were pleasantlysurprised by the clarity of the picture and sound, and most of all, the chance to see the singers andmusicians in close-ups. This is impossible from atheater seat hundreds of feet away from the stage. It is interesting to note that an orchestra seat at theNew York Met now costs $260! .... While ourpresentations are always free to all----and theDVDs always have subtitles!!

We must admit that our audience is very small andwe wish that people who have never seen an operawould just TRY it and find that they would bevery pleasantly surprised. But our small audienceis still very appreciative and has enjoyed thevariations in the programs we show. After all, herein Central Florida there is NO OTHER WAY tosee and hear such wonderful music and drama -nothing on TV or radio - other than The Orlandoopera that charges $195 for 3 operas (balcony seat)

-very far away from the stage plus the need todrive over 100 miles round trip in terrible traffic!!

Susan and I together have a large collection ofDVDs including several versions and differentsingers from most of the famous opera houses ofthe world. For a more special group of music, danceand drama lovers, Susan started and runs "TheCULTURE CLUB" on Wednesday nights, toconcentrate on ballet, movie musicals andBroadway and classical plays.

Both of us have been very pleased to serve the finepeople that attend our offerings and only wish thatthey will keep coming and continue to enjoy thebeauty, romance, drama and wonderful music wemake available. As always, we are open tosuggestions for future programs. We hope to seeyou all on the 3rd Friday of every month-so checkour poster in the Clubhouse for the news of ourcoming presentations.

************************HEALTH CORNER

MEDICAL ETHICAL ISSUES - concerning lifesupport and withholding and withdrawing treatmentare often the most difficult issues to discuss withfamily members. In the U.S., family members oftenequate "limiting care" as not being concerned andare frequently unaware of any reason other than afinancial one to withhold certain therapies (such asa feeding tube). Physicians are often reluctant todiscuss these issues for fear that they may beperceived as "giving up" on the patient.Sometimes, family members are compelled bypowerful emotions (such as guilt) or by adherenceto religious or secular traditions. Sometimes, theethical principles themselves are conflicting.

The principle of autonomy dictates that thepatient has the right to refuse any treatment, eventhough this decision may result in his death. Incontrast, the principle of beneficence dictates thatmedical personnel have the obligation to further thepatient's own legitimate interest. Sincepreservation of life is a legitimate interest of theperson, the refusal of life-prolonging therapycreates the potential for conflict. Respect forpatient autonomy, however, is one of the

4

Page 5: hawthorne.ipage.comhawthorne.ipage.com/historical1/images/Highlights... · recognize activity and your right to meeting time and place will be pre-empted by recognized activities

fundamental ethical principles underlying thecurrent practice of medicine. Both the ethicalprinciple of autonomy and the legal principle ofinformed consent support the right to refuse life-sustaining treatment.

The u.s. Supreme Court 1990 decisionrecognized a constitutional right of capable adults, even those not terminally ill or facing imminentdeaths, to refuse any medical therapy, including lifesustaining therapy and artificially providedhydration and nutrition.

Due to the legal, ethical, and philosophicalissues and dilemmas posed in cases by individualswith PVS who lack documentation of advancemedical directives, it is felt that the most importantchallenge to all adults is to "have their affairs inorder." What this means is not only to havefmancial documents in a safe and easily accessibleplace (location known by family members) and tohave consulted a lawyer regarding a last will andtestament, but also have in place what is called anadvance medical directive. The three most commonforms of advance medical directives for end-of-lifecare include, but are not limited to, living will, health care proxy forms, and durable power ofattorney for health care.

By communicating with one's family, physician, friends, legal advisor and perhaps even afinancial advisor about end-of-life issues, even at anearly age, we can protect ourselves from worryingabout causing legal and ethical battles if we becomeincapacitated. Having the proper documents in asafe, secure, easily accessible place and keepingthem updated is beneficial to all those involved. Itis a gift that we can give to those who love and carefor us.(Creative Forecasting, Inc. January 2008 issue)
