Background InformationTwo primary sources of industrial statistics in Nepal are

•The Census of Manufacturing Establishments (CME) and •Survey of Small Manufacturing Establishments (SSME) •Besides these quarterly data are also collected for the purpose of price index.

Background Information

• The CME is carried out every 5 years. • The SSME is carried out every 10 years.• The Central bureau of Statistics started the

census of Manufacturing from 1964 /65 and

• the Survey of Small Manufacturing Establishments (SSME) in 1972-73.

• The CME covers manufacturing activities undertaken by Establishments that engage ten or more persons

• SSME covers establishments that engage less than ten persons.

• Latest SSME is 2008/09.• Now Tenth CME is on going • We have planning to used (ISIC rev 4) and Central

Product Classification(CPC version 2) for data analysis on tenth CME

The survey covers establishments having the following features.

• Establishments engaging less than ten persons.

• Registered in any one government offices.

Sample Frame

• We listed all registered units involved in manufacturing which were operational during the reference period and which had less than ten persons engaged during the survey activity.

• The sample was drawn from this frame and the data has been extrapolated on the basis of the frame especially prepared for this survey.

Sample Design

• The goal of the design was to select optimum number of establishments under each NSICs. (NSIC is in turn based on International Standard

Industrial Classification (ISIC), Revision 3.)

• So as to obtain good representation of the population, special treatment was taken to include all NSIC.

• The sample enumeration is based on single stage stratified sampling technique.

Three strata within NSIC by size of“less than or equal to 5” persons engaged “6-7 persons engaged ” and “8-9” persons engaged Samples are selected proportionally between

the strataTotal sample was 3737 establishments out of

32326 establishments listed.

Analysis

• Manufacturing, as per the Nepal Standard Industrial Classification of all economic activities (NSIC ) (ISIC, Revision 3) and Central Product Classification(CPC version 1) are used.

• Data are given in–4 digit NSIC–4 digit CPC

Analysis

• Most of the statistical tables are published in the predefined format as recommended by UNIDO.

• The statistical tables were given according to principal indicators.

• There are no any mean variance analyses.
