PASTOR’S CORNER Eucharist: A Sacrifice Eucharist is primarily a sacrifice, because Jesus Christ who offered himself on Calvary for our redemption is present and offers himself on the altar in every Eucharistic celebration. Sacrifice is the prime and core of any religious worship. Though praise, thanksgiving, petitions do form part of worship, sacrifice is the heart of worship. It is this aspect of sacrifice that marks the sanctuary different from the rest of the holy place to become Holy of Holies, (Sanctum Sanctorum). The sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross, giving His Body and Blood as a sacrifice for our redemption is the essence of the Eucharist. Crucifix and the Altar are the most powerful symbols of this Sacrifice of Christ that we celebrate in the Eucharist. The Church teaches us, that the Body and Blood of Jesus are really, truly, substantially, and abidingly present together with his soul and divinity by the reason of Transubstantiation of the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ. This takes place in the unbloody sacrifice of the Mass. By the words, "Do this in commemoration of me" (Luke 22:19), Christ made the apostles priests and decreed that, they and other priests should offer His Body and Blood, "Every time, then, you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes" (1 Corinthians 11:26). In order to renew and re seal our covenant with God and in order to reconcile our torn and broken relationship we need to take part in this sacrifice and eat the Passover lamb, which is our unleavened bread, the Holy Communion. Jn 6:54 “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day”. “How sweet, the presence of Jesus to the longing, harassed soul! It is instant peace, and balm to every wound” St. Elizabeth Ann Seton
