MATEO AMADOR

Mateo Amador rides into work each morning on his cherry red Vespa, ready to start his work day and prepare The Athenaeum for the day ahead. As part of the club’s stewarding team, Mateo is responsible for setting up the dining outlets, creating the buffet tables, and making sure the kitchen is fully cleaned and stocked with the utensils and instruments needed to meet the daily operational demands. During the summer, Mateo is an incredible help in preparing the outdoor dining area, the Rath Al Fresco, for the large crowds that dine in the evening.

Even away from work, Mateo takes great enjoyment and pride in organizing and planning. When his schedule allows, the Amador family is often packed up for a weekend of camping and hiking to their favorite destinations such as Yosemite and Sequoia National Park, or Lake Tahoe. Mateo dedicates much of his spare time to volunteering, helping his community or assisting with his son’s Boy Scout troop. Mateo resides in Glendora with his wife of 24 years, Sonja, and their children.

Congratulations, Mateo, on a job well done.

Commencement on June 14 will be very special for our family as my son, Raymond, graduates from Caltech with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. It will definitely be a day of celebration for many families as they see their sons and daughters complete four very difficult but self-fulfilling

years of study. Onward and forward!

What an opening! The long-awaited summer watering-hole, the Rath al Fresco, opened with much fanfare in May and with strong member attendance. We were getting many many inquiries about its opening and, “voila!” the time has finally come. Be sure to try some of our new drink concoctions that Food & Beverage Director Jerry Rodriguez has pulled out from under his sleeves. These are aimed to quench your thirst and provide a refreshing drink at the end of a hot summer day. Not to be outdone, Chef Kevin Isacsson has also added some new items to the al Fresco’s repertoire. Be sure to try some of these food and beverage specials during one of your visits to our outdoor dining bistro.

Images of a succulent two-pound lobster come to mind when our annual Lobster Night comes around in June. On June 28 this year, those images will become a reality as you bite into a very juicy steamed two-pound-Maine lobster. Be sure to make your reservations early as this is a very popular event and closes out immediately.

International nights on June 3 and 17 take us to the Basque region and the Caribbean, respectively. International nights will be on hiatus for the remainder of the summer as we welcome families to the Family Night Barbecues scheduled every other Monday starting on June 24.

Please join me in congratulating the six Athenaeum employees who received their service awards last May 30. They represent a total of 110 years of service to The Athenaeum and Caltech!

I look forward to seeing you all at The Athenaeum. Please drop by my office when you are next at the club.

New Reciprocal Club Step back in time to the wild west for a reciprocal club experience that is truly historic. Located between Yellowstone

and Glacier National Park in the heart of downtown Helena, The Montana Club built in 1885, offers fine dining, private event services, and cowboy nightlife in

their Rathskeller, reminiscent of the days of speakeasies and bootleggers.
