Project name: NOVEL HYBRID MULTIFOCUS IMAGE FUSION (B.TECH)

Description: The objective of our project is to present a novel hybrid approach for multi-focus image fusion using

traditional Discrete Wavelet Transformation (DWT) and a Sharpness based fusion method. The discrete wavelet

transform (DWT) allows image decomposition in different coefficients preserving image information, thereafter we go

for Sharpness based fusion method, where the wavelet coefficients, acting as the source images, are first decomposed

into blocks. Then, the sharper blocks are selected by employing a sharpness criterion function. The selected blocks are

then combined to construct the fused images for each of the coefficients. Finally, inverse DWT helps us to get back an

efficient visually plausible coherent fused image. An optimization approach based on performance evaluation metrics,

to determine the optimal number of decomposition levels is also presented. Experimental results show that the

proposed novel hybrid method outperforms other traditional methods, both DWT based and sharpness based methods,

when applied individually to get fused image, in terms of both quantitative and visual evaluations.
