Officially opened last year, the all new Community Sports Complex in Doncaster has been imaginatively planned and built to the highestarchitectural standards..

The location of the Complex meant that particular attention was paid to rainwater run-off and pipe depth issues in general. WSP ConsultingEngineers were appointed for this part of the project. In discussion withmain contractors Carillion, it was decided to use Hauraton injectionmoulded polypropylene Recyfix® drainage channels around the perimeterof the stadium. 640 metres of channel was eventually specified, plus afurther 340 metres of pitch-side drainage inside the stadium itself. Recyfix® was chosen for being strong yet light enough to comply withmanual lifting regulations. Subsequently, 250 metres of same channel was also used to drain walkways and around the five-a-side pitches.Hauraton also supplied the components for the athletic track water jump and the long jump sand trap.

Being such a large environmentally sensitive area, the car park drainagesystem was a particularly tricky problem. Colin Taff, Hauraton applicationsengineer explains, “After further consideration our newly introducedRecyfix® HiCap system was found to answer the problem perfectly”.

As part of the engineering work commissioned by Western TerritoryNetwork, Alfred Mc Alpine project services have successfully installed over 1000metres of Hauraton’s Recyfix® 300mm channels.

Tim Connolly Hauraton’s Sales and Marketing Director explains. “Our Recyfix® 300 channels were an excellent choice for this project as they have a large drainage cross section 863cm2 yet only weigh 14.4kg which suited the manual handling and installation needs for this site perfectly. The channels were complimented with our patented Gugiductile iron mesh grating. Interestingly during installation there were noreported breakages on site”

Hauraton has been manufacturing a range of recycled drainage channels since1995. Initially, although made from recycled material, the driver for this was theweight and the ease of installation when measured against existing products inthe market. Obviously with the recent move towards green products therecycled aspect has now become an important feature. The Recyfix® range of products, are all manufactured from 100% recycled materials. This is madeup of amongst other things, bottles and bottle tops, industrial plastic waste andplastic car parts etc…

The Recyfix® range could be easily recycled again. The Grating section is Ductile Iron and could be re-used by any foundry. The channel body is aPP/PE mix and so could be chipped and re used to make any number ofdifferent products.

A full articulated trailer load of Recyfix channel is overall 20%- 40% lighter than the equivalent load of traditional materials, therefore giving a potentialfuel/emissions reduction per delivery.

The Recycled Product

Hauraton have for the last 50 years been at the forefront of manufacturing andhave developed a range of linear drainage systems that are today distributedand installed around the world.

During 2003 the decision was taken to move the manufacturing facility to anew purpose built development. During the preceding 4 years plans weredrawn up and various approvals gained. Construction on the 100 000 metresite started late in 2005. During the planning stages it was important that thefactory was developed to be as efficient as possible and to where possiblereduce the impact on climate change and reduce the use of natural resources.

Over 500,000 litres of water per year is saved by recycling waterused for cutting and drilling.

All rainwater collected from the plant is stored and then used withinthe production process.

Heat produced from machinery (Concrete Mixers) is used to warmup various additives.

The Plants own gas driven power plant produces significantamounts of heat. This heat is then captured and used for under floorheating across the whole facility.

The roof design incorporates solar panels, it is anticipated that attimes this will produce more electricity than is required. In thiscase the excess power can be transferred into the local power grid.
