RAMPION FUND REPORT 2020 7

1 Each person in Britain sends 1.7kg of fashion waste to landfill every year i and textile waste is expected to increase by 60% by 2030.ii

The good news is that extending the life of clothes by just nine months’ of active use would reduce carbon, water and waste footprints by 20-30% each year.iii

Smarter Uniforms is one group funded by the Rampion Fund that tackles the issue of textile waste head-on. The group collects unwanted school uniforms and resells them to families at low cost. Therefore, good quality, clean uniforms are enjoyed for longer, benefiting both families and the environment.

3 Solar is one of the world’s fastest growing energy technologies – with energy cost savings repurposed for social good.

Care for Veterans provides long-term nursing care, rehabilitation, respite and end-of-life care to disabled ex-Service personnel. Grants from the Rampion Fund have played a major role in the charity’s sustainability plans with an initial grant to help install solar power. The charity is now saving around £2,000 on monthly electricity bills and 10.5 tonnes CO2 annually.

2 England has 85% of the world’s 200 chalk rivers. These precious and unique freshwater ecosystems are at risk.

Ouse & Adur Rivers Trust has received funding from the Rampion Fund (and the Heritage Fund) to improve the natural environment at Sompting Estate. They have re-routed the chalk stream away from its underground course, installed sediment traps to capture pollutants from the surrounding urban environment, and planted 7,000 hedgerow trees of 14 different varieties, including hazel, dogwood and hawthorn. They are creating a high quality accessible area of green space, with hand sown wildflower meadows and a new river trail.
