BENGALURU: Decentralisedapproach to treatingsewage, rejuvenating lakesand harvesting rainwaterhave the potential to gener-ate a whopping 31 thou-sand million cubic (tmc) feetof water every year, whichis much more than what thecity needs, finds a lateststudy by researchers fromthe Indian Institute of Sci-ence (IISc), Bengaluru.

The study was conducted bya team of scientists includingsenior researcher Ramachan-dra T V, Energy and WetlandsResearch Group, Centre forEcological Sciences, IISc, toassess the quantum of wateravailable in the region to meetthe domestic demand.

The study largely banks on

three key potentials: annualrainfall, sewage treatment andefficient rainwater harvestingsystem.

“There is 30.85 tmcft of wa-ter available in the region an-nually to cater to the demandof Bengalureans, which is20.05 tmcft. However, the cityadministration should opt fordecentralised optimal watermanagement,” Prof Ra-

machandra notes.“Bengaluru records an av-

erage annual rainfall of 787mm and the total annual wateryield is about 14.8 tmcft. Thedomestic demand of water is20.05 tmcft per year (1,573million litres per day - MLD).This means about 73% of Ben-galuru’s water demand can bemet by efficient harvesting ofrainwater,” the study pointsout.

The quantification ofsewage generated shows thatabout 16.04 tmcft (1,258MLD) of sewage is generatedin the city.

The research paper notesthat the sewage treatmentwith complete removal of nu-trients and chemical contam-inants can be achieved by con-structing decentralisedtreatment plants.

It gives an example of a suc-cess model (secondary treat-ment plant integrated withconstructed wetlands and al-gal pond at Jakkur lake).

The study, however, ob-serves that this model of de-centralised harvesting of wa-ter and use of treated sewageis not an attractive propositionfor the current breed of deci-sion-makers with a colonialstyle of functioning.

The financial gain is muchhigher in the case of megaprojects (such as water diver-sion) compared to these de-centralised models. This is thesole reason for the local ad-ministrators to degrade de-centralised water harvestingstructures and alienate the lo-cal community, the researchpaper says.DH News Service
