Welcome all to Braeside Primary School’s first newsletter for 2018.

2018 is an important year for our school community. This year is the

year that Braeside has committed to enriching our Early Years

Learning program, building and further enhancing community

relationships and offering the STEAM (Science, Technology,

Engineering, Arts and Maths) program in a variety of ways throughout

the school.

The success of our application for a purpose built Science Laboratory

will further support these learning areas. We are pleased to announce

also the appointment of Miss Emily McGuire to our school for 2018.

Emily will work two days a week predominantly teaching Science to

the middle and junior classes.

All staff attended Staff Well-being professional learning on the first

day of school, this program will complement the student well-being

program we will offer throughout the school in 2018 and is a current

focus for the Department of Education.

Principal’s News continued...

A key part of our vision statement is to support students in the emotional areas of their development as well as academically and socially. Teachers have begun the year with enthusiasm and embraced the modifications to our Literacy and Numeracy blocks throughout the school. The students have begun the year in a similar manner working very hard in their new classrooms. It was fantastic to see the students arrive on the first day, all in their uniform and shiny shoes, enthusiastic to begin a new year of learning. We welcomed 22 new Kindergarten students to our school last Wednesday, as well as three new families to our school community. We hope all of our new families enjoy their association with Braeside Primary, during this year and the many upcoming years. All Kindergarten students settled well into school with no tears and they had many highlights for the day.

A big welcome to Braeside for our new students.

First Impressions of Braeside

“I like playing outside” Riley (Kindergarten)

“My favourite part is playing in the playground with

Jessie and spinning on the log” Stella (Kindergarten)

“All the kids are friendly. I am enjoying Maths the

most” (Harrison, Year 5)

“I like it because it’s new and different. I’m looking

forward to the end of year concert as I’ve never been in

one before” Bella (Year 4)

Instructional Times This year we have changed our instructional times for Monday to ensure students are ready and settled for assembly. Also, for longer assemblies, we can schedule them a little earlier. Please be aware of these, especially if you are coming in to bring students lunch. The times for Monday in 2018 are: 8.55 to 10.35 Literacy/Numeracy Block (this includes a Crunch’n’Sip time in the classroom) 10.50 to 12.30 Literacy/Numeracy Block 12.30 to 1.05 Lunch 1.05 to 2.35 Afternoon session All other days remain the same as detailed in the School Handbook. If you do not have a copy, please call into the office to pick one up or alternatively you can view it on the school website. Please also note that the school day begins at 8.35am, children are not to arrive at school until after this time. Assembly Due to a need for an uninterrupted Literacy Block, we will be holding our assembly on Mondays at 1.40pm for 2018. Our first assembly is scheduled to be on the 12th February at 1.40pm. The assembly will be hosted by our Student Council and will be a Year 4-7 sharing assembly. Swimming Lessons This week and next the Year 3 to Year 6 students are off to Katanning pool for swimming lessons. This is an annual event and gives our students a chance to further develop their skills. All students are reminded to make sure they have their hat, a water bottle and sunscreen. The weather for the next two weeks is forecast to be warm.

Home Reading and Guided Reading This week sees the whole school commence both Home Reading and Guided Reading programs in class. The very popular 100 nights of reading system, including recognition for 25, 50 and 75 nights will continue. Last year I attended a Professional Learning session that covered literacy strategies that had a significant, identified effect on a child’s literacy level of achievement, reading at home is one of these strategies. Research from around the world has found that there is a strong correlation between achievement and reading outside of school. Please see table

Holiday Building and Construction We are pleased to announce that the new air conditioners have been installed into Rooms 4 and 1, we thank the P & C for their contribution to these. I am sure both our Year 6 students and Pre-Primaries will enjoy and appreciate them over the upcoming weeks. The paving outside Rooms 5 to 8 has been replaced by concrete, making it safer and more serviceable. We will be co-ordinating a busy bee in the next months to organise painting of the table and benches in this area and also the re-mulching of the garden area. Many hands make light work and we are hoping that we have many parents join us for this event. School Council 2018 It is with great anticipation and pleasure that I announce that all School Council positions for 2018 remain filled. The yearly P & C representative positions will be filled at the upcoming P & C AGM. I look forward to working with the Councillors for another year as we continue with the projects commenced in 2017. Your School Council representatives are: Teresa Wigg ,Nicole Smallacombe, Joanne Tester, Kirsty Flugge, Kristy Daniell, Lisa Blacklow, Matthew Kerin, Sue Thompson and Tahlia Bielby.

Parent Information Evening We will be holding our parent Information evening this year on Thursday 15th February at 5.00pm. The timetable for the sessions will be as follows: 5.30 to 5.45 Kindergarten and Kindergarten/Pre-Primary class 5.45 to 6.00 Pre-Primary (all students as students are combined on a Tuesday and Friday) and Year 1. 6.00 to 6.15 Year 1/2 and Year 2/3 6.15 to 6.30 Year 3/4 Room 9 and Year 3/4 Room 10 6.30 to 6.45 Year 5, Year 6 6.45 to 7.00 Teachers from Year 3 and above will be available for individual questions Student Council and Faction Captains will be selling cool drinks and Icy poles. Further information will be provided on whether a sausage sizzle will be available. Contributions and Charges Just a reminder that $40 contributions per child is due. Parents who pay before the end of Term 1 will be eligible to win a $20 voucher for their child. This can be used for any school event, activity or at the uniform shop. The P & C has supported this draw by offering a prize for every class. The contributions are important to support purchase of items for student use including copier paper, additional workbooks, prizes and awards. Cybersafety Agreement It would be greatly appreciated if all students could please read, sign and return the Cybersafety Agreements that are attached to this newsletter. If you require any further information or have any questions in regards to these please don't hesitate to contact me.
