Newsletter Week 8 Term 3

I hope all Fathers enjoyed their day on Sunday, spending time with both their children and extended family. There was a terrific vibe around school on Thurs-day and Friday of last week when Fathers were invited to join classes for Father’s Day activities. Engaging in these informal, yet family friendly activities is a key part of Braeside Primary School’s future direction as stated in the Strategic Plan.

The current Strategic Plan is end dated 2019 and staff and the School Council are currently in the process of reviewing the plans in preparation for the new cycle 2019-2021. Community consultation around the plan will also occur during Term 4 of this year.

Letters and Sounds

As a school during 2018, we have been focusing on the adoption and implemen-tation of the “Letters and Sounds” synthetic phonics program. Staff have attend-ed Professional Learning, engaged in peer observation and discussion of data tracking methods within the school. The school has allocated and purchased con-siderable resources to also support the implementation of the program. The pro-gram provides explicit guidance for teachers on how to best teach reading and spelling to students in the early years of schooling. The program allows teachers to begin systematically teaching high quality phonic work from Pre-Primary so that students can have the phonic knowledge and skills to become fluent readers. The daily teaching is fun and multi-sensory involving many game based activities. The program also complements the Reading Eggs program that is used through-out the school.

The structure of the program levels with teaching components is included below. On the school website there is a copy of the school based tracking guide we will be using and also a more detailed handout regarding the Letters and Sounds pro-gram. If you have any queries or questions, please do not hesitate to contact myself, Miss Smallacombe or any of our early years teachers.

Phase Phonic Knowledge and Skills Activities are divided into seven aspects, including environmental sounds, instrumental sounds, body sounds, rhythm and rhyme, alliteration, voice sounds and finally oral blending and segmenting. Learning 19 letters of the alphabet and one sound for each. Blending sounds together to make words. Segmenting words into their separate sounds. Beginning to read simple captions. Letter sets

Set 1 - s, a, t, p, Set 2 - l, n, m, d, Set 3 - g, o, c, k, Set 4 - ck, e, u, r, Set 5 - h, b, f, ff, l, ll, ss The remaining 7 letters of the alphabet, one sound for each. Graphemes such as ch, oo, th representing the remaining phonemes not covered by single letters. Reading captions, sentences and questions. On completion of this phase, children will have learnt the "simple code", i.e. one grapheme for each phoneme in the English language. Letter sets: Set 6 - j, v, w, x Set 7 - y, z, zz, qu Graphemes: ear, air, ure, er, ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ai, ee, igh, oa, oo Consonant digraphs: ch, sh, th, ng. No new grapheme-phoneme correspondences are taught in this phase. Children learn to blend and segment longer words with adjacent consonants, e.g. swim, clap, jump. Now we move on to the "complex code". Children learn more graphemes for the phonemes which they already know, plus different ways of pronouncing the graphemes they already know. Arts focus for Semester 2: Music

You will be aware of the incursions we have recently had in regards to the Music area of The Arts curriculum, - Musica Viva and the Bunbury College Concert Band. This has been critical to the delivery of our music program this term, as a face to face experience for students has stronger viewing value than that viewed from a screen. Mrs Newman has organised one more music experience for the whole school, with an extension experience for choir participants, this is The Armistice Day Choral Project. Our Arts extension program for this semester is also musically focussed, with students participating weekly in Drum-beat lessons. Our choir students are preparing to head to Kulin for the Margaret Cotton Festival. Next year, Braeside has volunteered to host, co-ordinate and organise this event for the region. With the support or our community, the engagement of our students and parents and Mrs Newman at the helm, it will be an exciting and major event for Braeside in 2019.

NAPLAN SCHOOL READINESS TEST

Athletics Carnival

This week Students will participate in the annual Athletics Carnival. Students have taken home a program sheet with their events hi-lighted. The Jumps day will commence at 10.00am, with the day being loosely structured , depending on the finish times of previous events. We will update our school Facebook page approximately 30 minutes before each event is due to com-mence. We are hoping this will give parents time to arrive and watch their children’s events. Alternatively, you can choose to spend the day at school on Wednesday. We will set up tea and coffee in the Library and parents can order lunch on this day, please place your child’s faction on your order.

Friday is a full day event commencing at 10.00am for all students PP-Year 6. Kindergarten students are invited to come along for a running race at 12pm. Students need to pack their water bottles, hat and sunscreen and place their faction name on any lunch orders. Parents are also able to order lunch, but please place faction names on the lunch order also. Lunch orders will be deliv-ered at 12.15 pm. Students are encouraged to get into the faction spirit. The uniform shop sells faction t-shirts; ribbons, teddies and streamers are also great ways to cheer on your team.

Authorised absences and Good Standing Day

At the end of this term, we have the inflatables hired for our Good Standing Day. As a key part of our attendance strategy, stu-dents with 90% authorised absences and over will be eligible to attend, for half of the class session. The second half of the ses-sion will be for students who have good standing- three or less yellow/blue slips for the term. This means that absences need to be covered by a note, verbal communication with teacher or writing in a students diary. SMS response to a child’s absence is also counted as an authorised absences. Teachers have been sending home notes fortnightly to parents with your child’s unau-thorised absence, simply returning this note with reasons authorises the absence. We believe this is a very simple way of im-proving our attendance and also improving communication with parents in regards to attendance issues. We thank you for your support with this and if you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact Mrs Tester.

On Tuesday 28th August and Wednesday 29th August 2018

Year 3 and Year 5 Students participated in the NAPLAN

School Readiness Test. This was a chance to try out the

new National Online Assessment platform in a real-life

classroom environment. Participation in this test will en-

sure Braeside Primary School has adequate internet con-

nectivity, as well as the opportunity to manage classroom

logistics.

There are no student reports generated from this test. The

students will benefit from experience of the online assess-

ment process in readiness for the NAPLAN test.

Attendance Award

The Attendance Award for

Term 2 goes to Room 6.

Congratulations to Miss Breen and

students.

On Wednesday 22nd August the K-6 students participated in a

performance by Makukuhan.

Makukuhan is a mini gamelan orchestra, which brings the distinctive

and stirring Indonesian sound to life. Using traditional masked dance

and instruments like the kendang, angklung and rebana, Makuku-

han is the perfect window into the exotic music of our northern

neighbours.

Together, three musicians explored a number of styles from Bali and

Java, with a focus on melodic percussion and rhythm. It was an amazing performance.

On Friday the 31st of August the Pre Primary class walked to Woolworths and participated in their Discovery Tour. We got to see lots of parts of the store that we don't get to when we shop with Mum or Dad. We visited the bak-ery, the cool room and freezers, fresh produce area where they cut up the fruit and vegetables and we got to see where all the big trucks come in to deliver the food. Did you know that Woolworths in Katanning sells approx-imately 500 bananas a day. That is a lot of bananas. We had an amazing day and even got a hat and a goodies bag to take home.

Nicole Smallacombe

Room 6 also visited Woolworths and enjoyed their Dis-covery of Woolworths. Woolworths staff spoke about vegetables and the students learned many interesting facts about Woolworths.
