It is very exciting writing this newsletter knowing that we will be welcoming all students back to school this week. Our attendance rates over the last week have been pleasing, with 3 days exceeding the state average. This is significant for us as we rarely meet the state average. It also means that teachers can maximise the delivery of their content and return to pre-coronavirus teaching routines. Reports and Parent Interviews Two areas of schooling that will continue to be impacted during the upcoming term are formal school reports and also parent interviews. With not having a chance to chat to class teachers on drop off or pick up, it is difficult for parents to know how their children are settling and re-engaging with learning. Staff are finding this difficult also, as we had not realised the importance of the incidental chat, the afternoon touch base or the check in before school. If you wish, there is the ability for parents to come on-site after school hours to meet with teachers. If you would like to take up this opportunity, please contact the front office. Staff will contact the class teacher and a time will be arranged. Reporting to parents at the end of this term will also look quite different. Students will not be allocated grades, but will receive effort assessments in learning areas. Comments will be done in the areas of English, Maths, Science and HASS. An overall general comment will also be made, with the attitude behaviour and effort ticks completed. The scheduled parent interview afternoon in week 10 will not be going ahead. Upcoming Sports Events The school Cross Country will be held Friday morning of week 7, the 12 th of June. We are hoping to run the carnival around the school. Students from Year 1 will be practicing in the next few weeks, with our younger students running a lap of the oval. On Friday morning of week 9, the 26 th of June we will be hosting the Jump Rope For Heart Jump Day. This will support students to increase the number of jumps they do, in turn increasing the funds they raise. This will be followed by a mini-winter Carnival, with staff and students participating together in teams to play netball, soccer and hockey. As a school we are collecting parents words to describe Braeside Primary School for our IPS presentation. Can parents please have a think about words they would use to describe Braeside and message or ring them through to the office.

Vision:

Braeside Primary School is a dynamic learning community that values diversity and fosters a sense of belonging.

We meet the needs of each individual through collaborative, reflective, and evolving school-wide practices that

provide explicit, engaging experiences. Our students achieve their academic, emotional and social potential and are

contributing members of the community.

Newsletters can be emailed, please let the office

know your email address.

Reports and Parent Interviews

Two areas of schooling that will continue to be impacted during the upcoming term are formal school reports and also parent interviews.

Upcoming Sports Events

The school Cross Country will be held Friday morning of week 7, the 12th of June. We are hoping to run the carnival around the school. Students from Year 1 will be practicing in the next few weeks, with our younger students running a lap of the oval.

On Friday morning of week 9, the 26th of June we will be hosting the Jump Rope For Heart Jump Day.

Drop of and Pick up poll

Last week I developed a poll to record choices for drop off and pick up. The retention of the Kiss and Drop facility was the overall favourite. To minimise congestion at the end of the day, if you wish to park in the bays further down Carinya Gardens and your children are old enough to walk, this is also an option. We are collecting all riders and walkers from different locations around the school and also dismissing them from separate locations from this week. Please contact the school if you would like to access the Carinya Gardens option and your children can assemble with the riders and walkers in front of Room 10.

Playground

The playground committee met on Friday to determine 2 options for students and parents to choose from for the new playground. Once a selection is made via student and parent vote, the playground will be ordered. We have also set aside funds to have soft fall under both the playground and swings. This is a long term financial decision, as the cost of the river sand required to be used for playgrounds is exorbitant. We are envisaging that the new playground will be completed by the end of 2020. Students will have the opportunity to vote for one option in class. There will be a parent poll on Facebook with the photos of the two options, option A and B will also be attached to this newsletter to allow a closer look. If you do not have Facebook, you can contact the office or email me to register your vote. The playground committee considered a wide range of designs and have decided to purchase 2 pieces of equipment. This will allow the space available to be utilised and also to maximise the number of students who can use the equipment whilst minimising the supervision required. Thanks to the members of the playground committee, Melissa Tasarip, Louise Stade, Kirsty Flugge, Joanne Tester, Tahlia Bielby and Claire Collis for all of their time and commitment to ensure the continuity of this project.

Permission Forms

Last week, a new set of permission forms were sent home. These cover a range of new permissions that can be in place for the whole of 2020, minimising the amount of paperwork parents need to complete. There are also a range of permissions around use of technology and understanding of the school’s Devices from home policy. These policies have now been streamlined by the Department of Education and match newly released guidelines. All students must have signed permission to have an online account for school purposes. Without this account students cannot use either school based laptops or iPads. Please make sure you return these forms as soon as possible to the school office.

CHAPLAIN’S CHAT: Welcome back everyone for Term Two.

Just a reminder that as a YouthCARE school chaplain, my primary role is pastoral care (supporting the social, emotional, mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing of students, families and staff). I provide an independent, non-judgemental service which includes listening, help to deal with bullying, grief and loss, anger, anxiety, low self-esteem, depression and friendship/peer issues Garden Club:

At recess and lunchtimes I organise activities that are centred on

gardening or friendship-building, which all students are welcome to

join in with. We are currently watering the plants in the raised

garden beds, adding to the compost bins and caring for the worm

farms.

Circle of Control:

I have been talking to students about letting go of the things that

we can’t control, but that we still worry about. I would like to

encourage you to explore this concept further with your children.

My work days are Thursdays and Fridays; I can be contacted

through the front office or by email:

[email protected] if you would like to speak with

me or to arrange an appointment for your child to see me.

Influenza

Influenza or the ‘flu’ is caused by an influenza virus. It is spread through the air when someone coughs, sneezes or talks. It is also spread by touching something that has the virus on it and then touching your nose, eyes or mouth. Common symptoms include sore throat, cough, fever, headache, chills, tiredness and muscle aches. People with the flu should rest and drink plenty of fluid. Use paracetamol in recommended doses if necessary - but do not give children any medication containing aspirin. Be sure to keep your child home from school while he or she is sick. If you require school work for your child contact the school to prepare some for you to collect. The best way to prevent flu from spreading is by washing your hands regularly and after coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose. Flu vaccines are available prior to winter starting. For more information, contact your GP or the Katanning Immunization Clinic at 98216279. Why should I consider having my child vaccinated against the flu? The National Health and Medical Research Council, Australia's peak body for health advice, recommends annual vaccination for anyone six months of age or older who wants to reduce their chances of becoming ill with the flu. Annual flu vaccination is strongly recommended for anyone six months of age or older with a medical condition that places them at higher risk of severe illness from flu. Children and adults with heart, lung or kidney disease or a weakened immune system, are eligible for free flu vaccine through the National Immunization Program. Children without underlying medical conditions who become infected with flu can also develop serious illnesses. Flu can cause high fever and pneumonia, and make existing medical conditions worse. Flu can also cause convulsions and diarrhoea in children. Influenza viruses are always changing. Each year scientists try to match the strains of influenza viruses in the vaccine to those most likely to cause flu illnesses that year. It takes up to two weeks for protection to develop after vaccination against flu and protection lasts about a year. The seasonal flu vaccine is available on prescription or via GP and immunization clinics and is provided free for certain groups. For more information visit healthywa.wa.gov.au/immunization or contact your GP or Immunization Clinic.

School Entry Health Assessment All children in Western Australia are eligible for a School Entry Health Assessment when they are of school entry age. The School Entry Health Assessment is provided by the School Health Nurse. It is an excellent opportunity to look at the health and development of your child at the beginning of school life. The assessments are simple, non-invasive, quick and easy. They screen for problems which are best addressed, if picked up and treated early. The assessments include:

Vision

Hearing

Teeth

Growth (including weight, height and Body Mass Index). Your child’s results will be sent home after their health check has been completed. Results are always treated confi-dentially. Please note if the assessment results for your child suggest there may be a concern, the School Health Nurse will contact you to discuss. School Entry Health Assessment forms are currently being distributed for parents to complete. If you have not yet received or completed a form, please request one, complete and sign the back page of the form before you return it. Please return the form to the class teacher as soon as possible. Kindy assessments will start during this term. I look forward to working with you and your family. If you have a concern about your child’s health, development or wellbeing please contact me on 98216278. Sharon Muir, School Health Nurse
