Establishment and History of the University

A proud history

The Swinburnes lived for many generations in Northumberland, in the north of England. In early times, the family owned a castle on the banks of the Swin Burn, the brook of the boars. By 1245 the Swinburne coat of arms was ‘Gules: three boars heads argent’.

George Swinburne arrived in Melbourne in 1886, aged twenty-five. His early days in Melbourne were spent setting up gas plants and bringing gas-light to the cities and towns. As his business stature increased, he entered State Parliament and became a minister.

Swinburne was established as the Eastern Suburbs Technical College by George Swinburne and the first students were enrolled in 1909, when classes began in carpentry, plumbing and blacksmithing. In 1913 the institution changed its name to Swinburne Technical College, to commemorate the Honourable George Swinburne. Soon afterwards, a boys’ junior technical school and the first girls’ technical school were established.

An extensive reorganisation of advanced education took place in Victoria in the period 1976-78 culminating in the passing of the Victorian Post-Secondary Education Act. Under the Act, the Victoria Institution of Colleges was dissolved and the Victorian Post-Secondary Education Commission established. Under the new arrangements, Swinburne Council was given power to grant bachelor degrees. The first of these was awarded at a conferring ceremony held on Thursday, 21 May 1981 at the Camberwell Civic Centre.

The 1992 proclamation by the Parliament of Victoria of the Swinburne University of Technology Act marked not only recognition of its distinguished history, but the beginning of a new period of growth and innovation for Swinburne. From its establishment in 1908, Swinburne has grown through mergers with Prahran Institute of TAFE (1992) and Eastern Institute of TAFE (1998) into a multi-disciplined, multi-campus provider of vocational and higher education and training of national and international significance.

Swinburne holds a unique place among educational institutions in Australia in the link that persists between it and the founder and his family. The conferring of a modification of the family’s coat of arms preserves and strengthens that link.

The arms

The basic colours of red and white, and the cinquefoils charged on the shield, commemorate the arms of the Swinburne family.

The crest

The demi-Boar and the cinquefoil perpetuate the Swinburne connection; the book is symbolic of learning.

The motto

The College of Arms’ translation of the motto is: Achievement through learning.

The flag

The basic colours of red and white with cinquefoils.

The Mace and the Chair

In universities a mace is used as a symbol of institutional authority and it is carried in procession before the Chancellor as a symbolic weapon of protection.

The ceremonial items of the office of the Chancellor of Swinburne University were designed by Professor Helmut Lueckenhausen, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive, Sarawak. Fabricated from Queensland silky oak, sterling silver and gold, the mace has eight facets resolving as an open silver finial and crown which contains a carving of the rampant boar from the Swinburne coat of arms.

The chair also has eight divisions on the seat and back with an engraved silver boar and the Southern Cross on the upper back.

Artists and craftspeople involved in the project with the designer were Ian Higgs, cabinet maker, Geoffrey Dunne, Swinburne design graduate, Sue Wraight, netsuke carver and Hendrik Forster and Marion Marshall, silversmiths.

Civic contributions made towards the purchase of these items included the former City of Prahran for the University Mace, the former City of Hawthorn for the Chancellor’s Chair and the former Shire of Lillydale for the Chancellor’s Gown.

Swinburne has consistently pursued a policy of ensuring quality and critical mass by investing resources in areas of research concentration. Swinburne actively encourages and values its international and industry connections which enrich and enhance the research efforts and careers of our academic staff and students alike.

The PhD graduands listed below have each made a valuable contribution to Swinburne and their respective fields of research.

Doctor of Philosophy

Stefano BernardiThesis Title: Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Nanofluids and their Chaotic Properties

In this work several aspects of atomic fluids were analysed by means of molecular dynamics computer simulation techniques. Dr Bernardi focused on the study of inhomogeneous fluids trapped in highly confined geometries, such as water in carbon nanotubes and slit pores. Particular emphasis was given to the characterisation of the chaotic properties of such fluids under several types of constraints and forces.

Furthermore, a new algorithm to simulate fluids under mixed shear and extensional flows was developed and implemented. This flow is found in many industrial and biological processes and the technique allows for a more accurate computation of transport properties and other meaningful physical quantities, making it of interest for industrially relevant applications.

Jing GaoThesis Title: Structure and Content Based Clustering for Visiualization of Web Network Information

Dr Gao’s research mainly focuses on the investigation of analysing the contents of web information as well as the web network structures, and using these analysis to form an effective graph layout for the users’ interactions and navigation. She has proposed an approach for improving visualisation. This approach is grounded on the structure and content-based clustering by integrating filtering to remove noisy information. Such an approach can be used in many web related environments, e.g. blog visualisation, social network visualisation.

Xiao LiuThesis Title: A Novel Probabilistic Temporal Framework and its Strategies for Cost-Effective Delivery of High QoS in Scientific Cloud Workflow Systems

Cloud computing is the latest market-oriented computing paradigm which can provide virtually unlimited computing resources. As a type of middleware service for cloud computing, cloud workflow system is one of the research frontiers. Cloud workflows often underlie many large scale e-science applications such as earthquake modelling, weather forecast and Astrophysics. One of the major problems is the dynamic cloud service quality. With Dr. Xiao Liu’s work on the effective management of service quality in cloud workflow systems, the running of e-science applications will become more reliable, efficient and cost effective, which will benefit both scientific research and the IT industry.

This study was an exploration of the social dreaming method. The main aim was to investigate the relationship between spontaneity and participation in a social dreaming matrix.

The primary finding from this study is that the developing role relationships of the immediate social system of a matrix have an impact upon participants’ capacity to contribute their dreams, associations and connections. Secondary tasks were also discovered that assist the consultant to work with the primary task of making connections between the dreams, associations and the wider social system.

Vitality emerged as a significant form of spontaneity in social dreaming.

Sagi Kunju Kunju MathewThesis Title: Establishing a Japanese Transplant Company in the Indian Automobile Industry: A Qualitative Study of Cultural Disrespect

This thesis analyses the operations of a major Japanese automobile manufacturer in India during the period 1997–2010. This multinational company is renowned for its harmonious employee relations in its transplanted affiliates around the world. However, the company experienced severe industrial unrest in India during its first decade of operations and failed to achieve the ambitious production and market share forecasts in the country.

The thesis argues that disrespect shown towards traditional Indian cultural and social practices underlies the explanation for the industrial unrest.

The research has implications for the manner in which multinational companies conduct their operations in host countries, especially when a pervasive alien corporate culture is introduced into a host nation with strong social and cultural sensitivities.

Honorary Doctorate Doctor of the University honoris causa

Jeanne Pratt AC

Jeanne Pratt has made valuable contributions to the Arts, Australian Society and to Swinburne University of Technology throughout her long and distinguished career.

Jeanne is well known primarily for her philanthropic activities and her exceptional contribution to the arts. In 1978, together with her husband Richard, she established the Pratt Foundation, a philanthropic organisation created to support charities throughout Australia and the world.

During the 1980s and 90s, Richard and Jeanne Pratt became known in Australia for their generous support of the arts, medical research, and higher education. Since then, the Pratt family has generously donated approximately $200 million in grants to worthy causes.

Some of their notable philanthropic initiatives over the past decade have included grants to support mental health projects, and contributed to the development and evaluation of innovative and holistic treatments for cancer sufferers, teenagers with psychosis, and patients in women’s hospitals.

The provision of university scholarships for Aboriginal students has also been an important component in the Foundation’s donation programs.

Jeanne first became involved with Swinburne University of Technology through her husband’s appointment as the foundation Chancellor. Since that time, she has actively supported the institution in numerous ways, contributing to our Research and Development Foundation, several Council tours, scholarships and the Becton Trust, which assists students wishing to live in Swinburne student residences who are in financial need.

Jeanne has also opened her house, Raheen, for annual Swinburne events held by Alumni and Development for more than 15 years. The Swinburne Raheen Annual Cocktail Event, designed to thank alumni and friends of Swinburne, has been held since 1993. As well as hosting these cocktail parties at Raheen, Richard and Jeanne Pratt also made their residence available for the ‘Sir Rupert Hamer Lecture Series’ from 1995 to 2008.

In addition to the significant work undertaken by Jeanne for the Pratt Foundation, she has been a director of Visy Industries since 1979 and Co-chair since 2009.

Jeanne is also the Chairman of the Production Company Limited, a not-for-profit theatrical company she established in 1998 to promote and showcase new and established theatre talent and to stimulate the Melbourne Victorian Arts Centre, which attracted a total audience of over 300,000 in its first 10 years. As Chairman of the board, Jeanne provides hands-on leadership for all facets of the company.

In 2001, Jeanne initiated the Pratt Prize for Musical Theatre to be awarded biannually to outstanding composers and writers to assist them in developing new musicals. The total value of the prize is $80,000 and entries are judged by a panel chaired by Jeanne. Her dedication to the arts also saw Jeanne pledge $350,000 to the La Mama appeal in 2008, which was the catalyst for significant support from other foundations enabling La Mama to purchase their theatre property.

Jeanne Pratt’s involvement with the arts, her philanthropic initiatives and her love of producing events and musicals have combined to create an enduring legacy.

Her contributions to society have been formally recognised in a number of arenas. She has been awarded both the Order of Australia and the Companion of the Order of Australia as well as the Centenary Medal.

In 1998 Jeanne received the B’nai B’rith International Gold Medal for distinguished services to the Community and the Arts, and the inaugural Victoria Day Award for the Arts in 2001.

In 2007 she was the recipient of the Tiferet Lion of Judah Award from the Keren Hayesod-United Israel Appeal (Women’s Division).

Together with Richard, Jeanne received the Variety Club International Humanitarian Award (2004) and the Woodrow Wilson Award for Corporate Citizenship from the Woodrow Wilson International Centre for Scholars (2007).

Doctor of Philosophy

Thurairatnam AatheesanThesis Title: Engineering Properties and Applications of Recycled Brick Rubble

Recycled crushed brick, crushed concrete, crushed basaltic rock are viable substitute materials for natural construction materials in engineering applications such as pavement subbase and other road construction applications.

Dr Thurairatnam’s study focuses on the applicability of crushed brick blends with crushed concrete and crushed basaltic rock in pavement subbase/base material as well as bedding and backfill material for drainage systems. Extensive laboratory testings and finite element modelling were carried out to determine the engineering properties of crushed brick blends and to ascertain the potential use of crushed brick blends in pavement applications.

The research indicates that initially up to 25% of crushed brick could be safely used in pavement subbases. The outcome of this research has contributed to the amendment of the local road authority specifications for pavement subbases to initially allow up to 15% brick. Two journal and three conference papers were published as part of this research.

Neslihan DoganThesis title: Mathematical modeling of oxygen steelmaking

Oxygen steelmaking is currently the dominant technology for producing steel from molten iron. In this study, a computer based model has been developed to improve our understanding of the process kinetics of oxygen steelmaking. This model focused on the carbon removal reactions in various reaction zones and particularly, calculated the refining rates of carbon within the emulsified metal droplets using the bloated droplet theory. The dynamic model predicts the metal analysis for each time step throughout the blow to provide greater control, and as a tool to optimise the steelmaking process. In particular, the model allows for the decarburization kinetics in the impact zone to be predicted separately from the decarburization kinetics of the emulsion. This development represents an original contribution to our understanding of the steelmaking process.

Anthony Wayne GreavesThesis Title: Phase Contrast in X-Ray Imaging

Phase contrast imaging is a new and complimentary technique to traditional radiography. It has the potential to differentiate between healthy and cancerous tissue with less patient dose. Dr Greaves’ research examined parameters affecting phase contrast, such as source size, imaging geometry and beam filtration which is necessary for patient health. Phase contrast was measured experimentally then compared to computer simulations based on geometric optics and Fresnel diffraction theoretical models, to determine the effect of each component. Results showed that filtration narrows the phase contrast peaks but does not diminish their amplitude. Subsequent source and detector considerations then reduce the phase contrast amplitude in keeping with experimental findings.

Weihong HouThesis Title: Mechanical Properties and Energy Absorption of Aluminium Foam and Sandwich Panels

Aluminium foams and aluminium foam sandwich structures are novel materials and structures today. They can absorb considerable amounts of impact energy by undergoing large plastic deformation.

Dr Hou’s research looks deeper into the impact energy absorbing of aluminium foams and their sandwich panels. Foams and sandwiches of different sizes and densities are experimentally studied against different velocities and types of impact. Finite element modelling and theoretical analysis are then conducted to investigate the deformation/failure modes and energy dissipation mechanism.

Combining their low cost and good mechanical properties, aluminium foam sandwiches are found to be an ideal structure for impact-absorption purposes. This gives them great application potential in the automobile, marine, aircraft and building industries.

Mostafa NikzadThesis Title: New Metal/Polymer Composites for Fused Deposition Modelling

Conventional mould making techniques for plastic injection moulding are costly and time consuming for complex shape products. Dr Nikzad’s thesis focuses on development of novel direct rapid tooling methodology for economical and faster design and manufacture of complex injection moulding tools using the Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) rapid prototyping technology. New sets of metal/polymer composites have been developed as effective tooling material and processed in the layer-by-layer FDM rapid prototyping technology to make it a viable Rapid Manufacturing method for direct manufacturing of injection moulds and inserts, which overcomes the shortcomings of existing technologies. It has been demonstrated, through both theoretical analysis and experimental validations that such method can be successfully applied in laboratory and industrial scales for direct rapid tooling of moulds and dies.

Abul Bashar Mohammad SaifullahThesis Title: An Investigation on Conformal Cooling in Plastic Injection Moulding

Development of an injection mould with effective cooling channels is a complex, costly and time consuming process, especially when complex plastic parts are to be manufactured. Conventional machining methods cannot create conformal cooling channels which conform to the shape of the plastic part. Dr Saifullah’s work presents a comprehensive investigation on the application of conformal cooling channels in injection moulding for different cross sectional shapes, positions and diameter to determine which conformal cooling configuration gives the best results in terms of cycle time reduction in comparison to conventional straight drilled cooling channels. Both simulation and experimental verification have been carried out to justify the proposed conformal cooling channels. Dr Saifullah’s results proved that proposed method can reduce 30-35% of cycle time of injection moulding, which ultimately increases production rate.

Jianhu ShenThesis Title: Energy Absorption and Blast Resistance of Singly Curved Sandwich Shells

Dr Shen has made significant contributions to our understanding of performance of curved sandwich structures under blast and intensive impact loadings. Those structures have great potential to be used for protection of personnel and infrastructures as well as military devices under terrorist attack. He characterised the response of four typical singly curved sandwich structures through experiments and Finite Element models and developed new analytical models for predicting the performance and reliability of those structures in their applications.

Jenny TerzicThesis Title: Ultrasonic Fuel Level Sensor Development in Automotive Applications

Dr Terzic’s research involves the development of a fluid level measurement system for dynamic environments. The measurement system is based on a single ultrasonic sensor. A Support Vector Machine’s (SVM) based signal characterization and processing system has been developed and used to compensate for the effects of slosh and temperature variation in fluid level measurement systems used in dynamic environments including automotive applications. It has been demonstrated that a simple SVM model with Radial Basis Function (RBF) Kernel with the inclusion of a Moving Median filter could be used to achieve the high levels of accuracy required for fluid level measurement in dynamic environments including automotive applications.

Wang Xuan ZhiThesis Title: Tool Wear Prediction Modelling for Sheet Metal Stamping Die in Automotive Manufacture

Advanced high strength steels (AHSS) are increasingly used in sheet metal stamping in the automotive industry. In comparison with conventional steels, AHSS stampings produce higher contact pressures at the interface between draw die and sheet metal blank, resulting in more severe wear conditions, particularly at the draw die radius. This thesis investigates the influence of draw die geometry on the wear distribution over the draw die radius for AHSS and develops a methodology for optimising the draw die geometry to reduce wear using numerical and experimental methods. The results obtained are relevant to the issue of reducing the high tool wear in automotive stamping tools by predicting the causes of such tool wear related to tool geometry and process parameters. They provide useful guidelines for enhancing the tool life of sheet metal stamping in the automotive industry.

Abdullah Gokhan YilmazThesis Title: Climate Change Impacts Assessment on Snow Hydrology and Irrigation in Turkey

Climate is changing in a way that cannot be explained by natural variability. One of the most affected areas by global warming is hydrology and water resources. Regions where the majority of runoff consists of snow melt, which is an important water resource to many aspects of hydrology including water supply, flood control and erosion, are more sensitive to climate change, particularly temperature increases. This study investigates climate change impacts on snow hydrology in Euphrates Basin located in the mountainous Eastern Anatolia in Turkey. In addition, climate change influences on irrigation and agriculture which is the largest water consumer sector in Turkey were discussed.

Anthony Joseph SelfThesis title: A Style Guide for Authoring Documents using DITA

Dr Self used action-research methods to investigate what constitutes best practice in DITA authoring, and captured those best practices into a Style Manual for Document Authoring using DITA. DITA (Darwin Information Typing Architecture) is an XML-based methodology used to write information using semantic, structured authoring techniques.

The primary product of the research was an Artefact (The DITA Style Guide: Best Practices for Authors), published as a substantial book now used as a reference by technical communicators worldwide, and itself written using DITA. It was accompanied by an Exegesis reflecting on the process of writing the book within the DITA approach.

Wi-Kuan LinThesis Title: Space Design for Connected Place Memory: A design framework for harnessing spatial context to support informal museum learning.

For museums, exhibitions are a principal conduit for delivering informal learning, yet published knowledge in the fields of exhibition design and museum studies include no substantial principles for the design and assessment of exhibition space as informal learning environments.

Drawing on aspects of constructivist educational theory, spatial intelligence studies and mnemonic loci learning, the thesis proposes a framework for designing exhibition space to develop connected place memory and support informal learning.

Interviews with working designers, detailed analyses of exhibition areas in three museums and an exemplary design inform the discussion. The framework may also contribute to other environmental design concerning learning experience.

Mary-Louise CooperThesis Title: Parkinsons, Employment and Quality of Life.

This research explored the employment experience of people with Parkinson’s disease. Work emerged as extremely important in maintaining social participation, a daily routine and a sense of purpose. Those remaining in employment whilst of working age were less likely to experience depression. High levels of self-efficacy were identified as predictive of less depression, therefore interventions to improve and maintain employment should be designed to increase self-efficacy as well as assess the demands of a job. This research, using qualitative and quantitative methods, highlights the importance of employment for people with Parkinson’s and informs both health professionals and employers.

Rosalind MonteithThesis Title: Women who drink: A study of mature age women who misuse alcohol.

This study explored the subjective experiences of mature aged women who misuse alcohol. Specifically the goals were to gain an understanding of how the women viewed themselves, how they experienced and made sense of their alcohol use, their experiences of seeking help for their alcohol misuse, motivation to quit or reduce their drinking and possible barriers to seeking and receiving help. An overarching goal was to gain greater insight into the factors that make mature aged women vulnerable to substance misuse and how detection and treatment may be facilitated for such women.

The PhD graduands listed below have each made a valuable contribution to Swinburne and their respective fields of research.

Doctor of Philosophy

Benjamin BullockThesis Title: Actigraph-derived variables as predictors of bipolar disorder traits and states: theoretical and empirical considerations.

Bipolar disorder is a chronic and potentially disabling mood disorder that is characterised by recurrent episodes of mania and depression. Signature features of these episodes include disruptions to sleep and activity patterns, which are thought to arise from an unstable circadian system. The aim of the project was to investigate these signature features for associations with vulnerability to bipolar disorder at both the trait and state level using actigraphy, a non-invasive measure of sleep and activity. The outcomes of the project were expected to inform clinical practice on the usefulness of actigraphic monitoring for identifying the onset of manic and depressive episodes.

Fallon Jean CookThesis Title: Assisting children affected by parental separation and exposure to parental conflict.

This thesis examined the effectiveness of a cognitive behavioural therapy program for children showing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder following a highly conflictual parental separation or divorce. Children who took part in the therapy program showed a significant reduction in anxiety and post-traumatic stress symptoms, compared to children whose parents received only a self-help handbook. Findings suggest that this therapy program is an effective treatment for children showing fear reactions following a highly conflictual parental separation or divorce, provided conflict is not ongoing. Dr Cook’s findings will guide clinicians in providing evidence based treatments for such children.

Daniel Scott EldridgeThesis Title: Metal Ions The Role of Surface Functionality on the Adsorption of Divalent.

The toxicity of heavy metals is a well-known environmental concern, and their remediation is of great interest. Adsorption is often the first step, and sometimes the only step, in metal ion remediation. While this process has been shown to be effective, the nuances of the process are not fully understood. Dr Eldridge’s thesis combined chemical experimentation with mathematical modelling to illustrate the important role that different surfaces play. His mathematical models have been optimised to better predict adsorption, and therefore the success of remediation.

Maren Louisa RawlingsThesis Title: Development and validation of the Humour at Work scale.

In the first quantitative study of humour in the workplace, Dr Rawlings’ created a self-report scale based on humour theory, research, and observations of humour in work settings. The Humour at Work scale was tested on more than 300 respondents, and validated on a further sample of over 300 respondents. Subsequent structural equation modelling revealed that the use of negative humour by other people in the work place was associated with personal anxiety at work, lower job satisfaction and the perception that organisational productivity was lower. This scale provides management with a non-threatening tool to measure workplace culture and probable productivity.
