John E. “Jack” Gilster, DDS, Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics at Washington University School of Dental Medicine died peacefully, surrounded by love ones, Wednesday August 6, 2014, in Albuquerque, NM.

He was 92. Dr. Gilster was one of three principal scientific investigators of the St. Louis Baby Tooth Survey (1959-1970). The Survey, through the research directed by Dr. Gilster & his fellow investigators, quantitatively determined that above ground nuclear testing was poisoning the children of the world. With this evidence, The USSR, UK and US governments agreed to stop above ground nuclear weapons testing with the ratification of the Limited (Atmospheric) Test Ban Treaty in the fall of 1963.

Jack was born in Chester, Il and graduated from the University of Illinois in 1940. He graduated from the Washington University School of Dentistry in 1944. Following

two years service in the Army, and three years of general dental practice with his father, Dr. B.E. Gilster (WUSL DDS, ’18), in Chester, IL, he established a private practice in Pediatric Dentistry in St. Louis. Jack taught Pediatric Dentistry at Washington University’s Dental School beginning in 1950, rising through the ranks to Professor of Pediatric Dentistry and eventually, Professor Emeritus upon his retirement in 1987. He served as President of the Alumni Association in 1969, and was named Distinguished Alumnus by the Washington University Dental Alumni Association in 1977. Jack served on the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry from 1959-1966, serving as Chairman in 1966. He was awarded fellowship in the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentists. Jack was an accomplished Editor, serving as such for

the St. Louis Dental Society Bulletin (1953-1963), The Journal of the Missouri Dental Association (1963-1973). He served on the ADA Council on Journalism (1963-1969) and was President of the American Association of Dental Editors in 1971. Jack also served as Editor of this Alumni Newsletter for an astounding 29 years (1973-2002). In 1987, Jack was awarded a Distinguished Alumnus of Washington University. After retirement, Jack was elected President of the Dental Coalition for Public Awareness and later served as a Board member for the National Federation for Ectodermal Dysplasia. Jack moved from St. Louis to Albuquerque in 2003 to be closer to family. He is the father of three children, John, Norman and Elisabeth and six brilliant grandchildren. dontics, he became the Ex-ecutive Director. He served in that capacity until 1997, retiring as Executive Direc-tor Emeritus. The Ameri-can Board of Orthodontics honored Dr. Selfridge with its Earl & Wilma Shepard Award of distinction in 2006.

Dr. Selfridge served as President of the Interna-tional College of Dentists (ICD) in 1980. In 1984, the College honored him with Master Fellowship. Elected as Deputy Registrar of the USA Section in 1990, he provided guidance & sup-port for two Secretary Gen-eral/Registrars. Dr. Selfridge retired as the Deputy Regis-trar of the ICD, USA Section, and was awarded Secretary General/Registrar Emeritus status in 2005.

Each year the Washington University Dental Alumni Association (WUDAA) selects a Distinguished Alumnus and this year Dr. Joseph F Hagenbruch was chosen as the recipient.

Dr. Hagenbruch graduated from The Washington University School of Dental Medicine in 1982. Joe received his undergraduate degree from Illinois State University. Prior to attending dental school, he was a high school science teacher and coach for a number of years.

Joe is the current American Dental Association Eighth Dis-trict Trustee in the fourth year of a four year term. He is a former-president of the Illinois State Dental Society, the Illinois Acad-emy of General Dentistry and the McHenry County Dental Society. He serves as an Illinois State Dental Society Spokesperson

on dental related subjects. He is also a designated spokesper-son/presenter for Illinois State Dental Society on the Prevent Abuse and Neglect through Den-tal Awareness (P.A.N.D.A.) initia-tive in Illinois.

Joe is a Fellow in the American College of Dentists (ACD) and is a past-chairperson for the Illinois Section. He also presently serves as the Regent for the American College of Dentists representing Regency 5 (which includes the ACD Sections in Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin). Arcolian Dental Arts Society. He served six years as a member of the Academy of General Dentistry’s Council on Legislative and Governmental Affairs. He served on the ADA Council on Dental Benefit Programs and was chair of that Council in his final year. He has served as an ADA and AGD Delegate for their respective House of Delegates on a multitude of occasions, as well as a Delegate (representing the McHenry County Dental Society) many times for the Illinois State Dental Society House of Delegates. Joe also has a wealth of experience serving on a number of McHenry County Dental Society and Illinois State Dental Society Committees, as well as a wide-range of voluntary service regarding non-dental community and county agencies.

Joe was instrumental in helping found a dental clinic in McHenry County in northern Illinois specifically designed to care for the underserved populations. Dr. Hagenbruch volunteers his services at this

clinic---the McHenry County Cooperative Dental Clinic (MCCDC) which provides basic dental care for those individuals in McHenry County and the surrounding area that qualify as medically indigent, Medicaid-eligible, or are among the working-poor population.

Joe was named an Illinois Healthy Smiles Hero in 2007 by then Illinois Lieutenant Governor (former Governor) Patrick Quinn for efforts in establishing the MCCDC facility, as well as for his commitment to increase access to dental care for underserved persons in Illinois and southern Wisconsin.

Joe’s interests outside dentistry include travel, golf, & bicycle riding. He is a sports fan and a professed die-hard St. Louis Cardinals fan his whole life. Joe is a long standing-member of the Lions Club, having served as the local club’s President twice. Joe and his wife, Rita, have a daughter, Laura, who is married to Michal. The Washington University Dental Alumni Association (WUDAA) held its annual meeting on September 19 and 20, 2014. The WUDAA events were held at the Chase Park Plaza Hotel in the Central West End in St. Louis. The meetings and reunion festivities were well attended. Each year the attendees report that they return specifically to this meeting in St. Louis to enjoy the people and places they remember from their days in dental school.

The 148th Annual Session of the WUDAA meeting began Friday evening, September 19 with a reception at the Alumni House on the Main Campus. As always, there was a large crowd for this event. It is a great opportunity to socialize and catch up with Alumni from many different years and numerous instructors from the dental school. This year approximately 200 Alums and their guests attended the Friday evening gathering. The classes that held reunions were:

55th reunion, the Class of 1959

50th reunion, the Class of 1964

45th reunion, the Class of 1969

40th reunion, the Class of 1974

35th reunion, the Class of 1979

30th reunion, the Class of 1984

25th reunion, the Class of 1989

After the reception at the Alumni House, the classes celebrating their reunions went on to various locations for dinner, catching up, laughter and more reminiscing.

The Board of Directors of the Dental Alumni Association met several weeks before the September Annual Meeting to conduct the business necessary

to prepare for the 2014 Annual Meeting. Reports were given by WUDAA Secretary/Treasurer, Mark McCarthy. The Board of Directors received reports from the Finance Committee, Nominating Committee, Scholarship Committee and Newsletter Editors. The reports from the Website chairman and History Committee were also received.

On Saturday morning, Sep-tember 20, a Continuing Educa-tion program was presented by WUDAA. The CE program fea-tured four speakers who each gave a presentation relevant to their areas of expertise. (Please see separate article for more in-formation on page 19). Follow-ing the Continuing Education program, the WUDAA Business meeting was held. This annual meeting is open to any Alum who would like to attend and all Alumni are eligible to vote. A re-port of the meeting of the Board of Directors was given and ap-propriate action was taken. The slate of new officers was pre-sented and elected. They are:

President:Dr. Michael O’Connell, 1984

President-Elect: Dr. Michael Noble, 1984

Vice-President: Dr. Kevin Thorpe, 1979

Secretary/Treasurer: Dr. Mark McCarthy, 1979

Editors: Dr. Gail Holcomb and Dr. Robert Boyle, 1979

The annual Alumni As-sociation Banquet was held Saturday evening, Septem-ber 20. Dr. Arnie Jacobson, 1976, President of the Alumni Association, was the emcee of the evening’s events. All of

the reunion classes were rec-ognized. Special honors were given to the Fifty Year Class of 1964; they were awarded com-memorative medallions from Washington University. The Twenty Five Year Class of 1989 received special recognition and certificates in honor of their service to the dental profession.

The Washington University Dental Alumni Association has created a Scholarship Fund for the study of Dental Medi-cine. The recipients of the 2014 Scholarship Award were Antho-ny Clark, Michael Forman, and Julia Kofkoff. These students are the eighth, ninth and tenth recipients of the WUDAA Scholarship Award. Julia Kofkoff was present with her parents for the Banquet. (Please see separate article on page 6 for more information regarding the WUDAA Scholar-ship Fund).

At the 2010 banquet, the Alumni Association President, Kevin Walsh, ’80, established the John E. Gilster Service Award. It is named for Jack Gil-ster, ’44, who was the Editor of the WUDAA Newsletter for over 40 years. Mark your calendars for the 149th Annual Meeting of The Washington University Dental Alumni Association, which will be held on Friday, September 18 and Saturday September 19, 2015. Our activities begin on Friday evening with an informal, but elegant cocktail party at the Alumni House located on Washington’s University’s main campus. This is a wonderful setting and great opportunity to reunite with classmates and fellow Alumni and faculty. It is always a popular event and a wonderful start to many of the reunion activities of individual classes.

On Saturday morning, the 19th, we will sponsor four hours of Continuing Education with ADA and AGD approved seminars at the Chase Park Plaza Hotel. The afternoon is free to enjoy all of the sights and sounds of St Louis. The evening will begin with a social hour

where you can catch up with fellow Alumni, followed by the Annual Banquet at the Chase Park Plaza Hotel.

On a special note, the class of 1965 will receive special recognition of their 50th anniversary. Other classes as well, will be celebrating their 25th, 30th, 35th, 40th, 45th reunions and beyond.

We will also honor a Distinguished Alumnus and this year’s recipient of our Scholarship Award.

I trust each of you will want to learn more details about this year’s get together and hope you can join us after all it’s been 24 years since our last graduation day.

Please call and/or e-mail and recruit fellow classmates to organize your class reunion. Our Association’s Alumni Liaison, David Jolley, is available to assist you by providing mailing lists, local arrangements and support. He may be reached at [email protected] or 1-314-935-5051.

WUDAA Continuing Education classes Saturday morning will include attendance at the annual Alumni Business meeting and luncheon at no additional charge.

• On Saturday evening the Alumni Association holds its annual banquet. Reunion classes can reserve tables for their parties. Each class holding a reunion will be recognized. Traditionally, the special recognition of the evening is focused on the Class that is holding its Fifty Year reunion. These attendees receive a special medallion from Washington University. The other highlight of the evening is the presentation of the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year award.

• The Greater St. Louis Dental Society has moved the Mid-Continent meeting to November and therefore that event no longer coincides with our meeting.

• Alternative activities for the weekend may include enjoying Saint Louis with their friends and families by taking the City Tour, visiting Forest Park, the Arch, the Botanical Garden, or just shopping. To anticipate your question; No…unfortunately the Cardinals are not in town this weekend! However, it is the weekend of the Great Forest Park Balloon Race. With more than 70 entrants and 130,000 spectators, it is one of the most well-attended single-day hot air balloon races in the country.

Is it time for a reunion of your class? Are you thinking of organizing a get-together? It may be easier than you think.

• On Friday, September 18th, and Saturday, September 19th, 2015, the Washington University Dental Alumni Association (WUDAA) will continue our tradition of holding our meetings and Continuing Education classes at the Chase Park Plaza Hotel in the Central West End. The weekend will offer Continuing Education, pre-planned Alumni activities and a walk down Memory Lane in gorgeous fall weather in St. Louis. Further details can be found at: www.wudaa.com.

• Friday evening, September 18th, your Alumni Association hosts an Alumni reception at the Alumni House on main campus from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. This gathering is always well attended and is the best place to see classmates, other Alums and many of our previous instructors. The Alumni Association provides a photographer who can photograph classmates and class reunions during this weekend. The perfect time to schedule your Class Reunion dinner party may be after this event.

• Saturday morning, September 19th, offers an opportunity to participate in our WUDAA sponsored, ADA/AGD approved Continuing Education seminars. The program for 2015 will include 3 speakers who will each speak for approximately one hour about a variety of topics. Attendance at the

ANNUAL DUES

Alumni Association Business

Thank you to all alumni who contribute to the Washington University Dental Alumni Association (WUDAA) with payment of dues each year. Those dues help to fund a number of ongoing events

and projects. Our dues allow us to host the many Friday and Saturday activities held during the WUDAA Annual Meetings, usually in September in St. Louis. We also host an evening reception at each ADA

meeting, which is open to all Dental Alumni. Dues also pay for the publication and mailing of the annual Newsletter and maintenance of the website, www.WUDAA.com.

ANNUAL DUES for 2015Dear Doctor,The calendar year 2015

dues for your Dental Alumni Association are being solicited. Your contribution will assure that the Alumni Association remains a vital organization. Our dues are used to publish the Annual Newsletter and to host and organize the reunion weekend including continuing education sessions. The Association also hosts a reception in conjunction with the ADA Annual Session every fall. This year the meeting will be in Washington, D.C., November 5-10, 2015.

The Annual Meeting of the

Alumni Association and the associated class reunions will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at the Chase Park Plaza Hotel in St. Louis. Please be sure to attend our cocktail reception on Friday, September 18, 2015. We will send you additional information on the upcoming events.

Please visit the alumni website, www.wudaa.com, to update your contact information and review the activities of the Alumni Association.

The Alumni Association has created a scholarship for the

study of Dental Medicine. We believe that this scholarship will help a student complete his or her dental education, thereby helping the public receive quality dental care. We encourage those who are able to make an additional Alumni Association donation as well as a donation to the WUDAA Scholarship Fund.

Our organization is a not-for-profit charitable organization. Therefore all donations will be tax deductible.

Thank you for your support. Sincerely,Mark X. McCarthy, DMDSecretary-Treasurer

ASSOCIATION WANTS YOU!

WE NEED YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESSAs you know, most

organizations are doing a lot of belt tightening to balance their budgets. In this time of dwindling memberships and increasing costs, we are looking at ways to balance our budget without raising dues. One of our largest expenses is communications with our members. The high cost of postage, stationary and mailing expenses would be greatly reduced if we could communicate directly via email.

To that end, you will find on the return portion of your dues notice enclosed a line for your email address. Please provide your email address there. We will not publicize or divulge your email to anyone without your permission. Also, if you are unable to pay your dues at this time, please fill out the slip anyway with your name, class and email and return it to me so we can update our database with your email. At some point in the near future, all of our communication will be through email. If you do not have email capability, please let us know that too.

If you want to let me know your email address via email, please contact me directly at my email below. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding!

An Invitation to the Sesquicentennial Celebration

In June of 1866, a new dental school was opened in St. Louis, the

first dental school west of the Mississippi River.

In June of 1991, the Washington University School of Dental Medicine

graduated its last class, 125 years after it opened as Missouri Dental College.

In the 125 years of operation, the school had five different names and six

different locations and was the gateway to many advances in Dentistry.

“The proud tradition of the Washington University School of Dental Medicine will be fondly

remembered, a long as we keep it alive in our hearts and minds.” — Jack Gilster, June, 1991

2016 will be the 150th year since the opening of the Dental School and

will also mark 25 years since the closing of our Alma Mater. Your Alumni

Association is planning an extra special Sesquicentennial Celebration to mark

the occasion. We have reserved the Starlight Room at the Chase Park Plaza

Hotel. This elegant roof top room provides a beautiful view of the City and

Forest Park and is a lovely setting for this celebration.

What: PLEASE PLAN ON JOINING YOUR CLASSMATES AND FELLOW
