TRANSCRIPT

Rachel CHERNICK

To me, graphic design is more that than

just learning the right programs. It’s so

much more than picking colors and

pictures and throwing it together with a

trendy typeface. It’s about guiding your

audience on a visual journey through the

information they are being presented.

It’s about creating a visual hierarchy to

control a person’s experience, whether

that be through a brochure or on

a website.

Graphic design is a process and a

collaboration that visually represents

the ideas and messages of all parties

involved to create a final result that, when

done correctly, feels effortlessly impactful.

Introduction

We understand that paying for a quality education

can be challenging. At Emmanuel, we offer

many options to finance your educational

investment; this guide provides a summary of

those payment options.

Some families will choose one option to pay for

the full cost of education, or the balance after

financial aid, and others will use a combination

plan. There is no one right way to pay for

education — each family situation is different.

In addition to the loans referenced in this guide,

there are many other loan choices available to

students and parents. We encourage all borrowers

to do their own research and select the lender that

is best for them.

Please know that we are here to help you decide

which financing option(s) may be best for you.

A Shared Approach

At Emmanuel, we know that a college education is a worthwhile investment that can

reap great rewards. We also understand that financing a quality private education can

be a challenge. That is why we believe that paying for an education is a partnership

between students, their families and the College.

Students invest in their own education by applying for scholarships and grants and

by borrowing with low-cost student loans.

Parents contribute to their children’s education from savings, current income, tax

credits and through low-cost parent loans.

Emmanuel College supports our students by offering merit-based scholarships and

need-based grant aid, and by participating in all federal and state funding options,

including the Federal TEACH Grant and Yellow Ribbon Program.

A college education provides graduates with dramatic advantages and opportunities.

Over the span of one’s working life, those with a bachelor’s degree earn nearly double

that of high school graduates, they gain access to a greater job market, and they open

doors to new fields through comprehensive and interdisciplinary learning.

“Emmanuel’s proximity to the Longwood

Medical and Academic Area (LMA) encouraged

me to take the initiative and contact Beth

Israel in hopes of gaining experience. Now, I

serve as a research student and volunteer in

their emergency department. I’m learning so

much from both these experiences.”

Student Employment Students can gain valuable work experience and earn spending money through on- or off-campus job opportunities. Emmanuel provides on-campus jobs, including positions with academic departments, Athletics, Admissions, Residence Life and the library. Our Boston location affords students the opportunity to find off-campus jobs within a short walk from campus, as well as the chance to gain real-world experience through internships.

Internship and job listings are conveniently posted on our Internships and Career Development website and a job fair is held on campus at the start of each semester.

Tony Carter-Hill ’11Graphic Design

Work Study Student, Emmanuel’s Office of Marketing Communications

“My hope was to gain more experience in graphic design while working in the Office of Marketing Communications. Yet it was the filming and editing projects that I enjoyed the most. Now I am planning to attend film school after graduation. I would not have realized my interest in this medium had it not been for this opportunity.”

Areas of StudyWith more than 30 areas of study to explore, at Emmanuel College you will flex muscles of both the mind and the heart as you develop the ability to acquire and evaluate knowledge, and the imagination to shape new ways of perceiving, thinking and creating. Here every class is taught by a professor, not a teaching assistant. Creating a deep, personal student/faculty relationship that begins day one. This is an engaged, energetic faculty with global connections in their fields. The classes are small; the horizon is huge.

City Life

Boston is an amazing city filled with history, culture and excitement. It’s home to 250,000 college and university students, a popular tourist destination for many, and it’s a big part of what makes Emmanuel special.

Our hope is that you won’t just live and learn in the city of Boston – you’ll experience it. You can stroll a few blocks to a Red Sox game or find yourself amongst exhibits at the Museum of Fine Arts within minutes. Through our various service programs, you will have the chance to head out into the city and make a positive impact. Looking to gain real-world experience? Emmanuel students intern at some of the most prestigious locations in and around Boston. Plus, as a member of the Colleges of the Fenway (COF), Emmanuel offers you the opportunity to meet the students at nearby colleges and universities, cross-register at COF schools, participate in intramurals and more.

There’s so much to see and do around Boston. Let your feet lead the way.

“Participating in Alternative Spring Break was amazing. I left knowing that I made a difference in people’s everyday lives and returned to campus with a new sense of how fortunate I am.” - Alexa Mitton ’14

At the core of Emmanuel is a commitment to service. Last year, 85% of our student body participated in community service, contributing over 31,000 hours of their time to help others. Emmanuel was named to the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction, one of just four Massachusetts colleges/universities to earn the award. How can you get involved?

What Happens at Orientation?

Orientation is our first opportunity to welcome you as a member of the Emmanuel

community. During the two-day program, which begins at 9:30 a.m. on Day 1 and

concludes at 4:30 p.m. on Day 2, you’ll get a sneak peek of what life’s like here at

Emmanuel College. In addition to staying overnight in the residence halls and meeting

your new classmates, we’ll help you get started on becoming an active member of

our community.

We’ve put together a full itinerary of activities for you, which you will receive upon your

arrival to campus. Until then, here are a few highlights of what happens at Orientation:

Day 1

Meet Your Orientation Leaders

Orientation Leaders (OLs) are a select group of current students dedicated to welcoming

you, answering questions and introducing you to everything Emmanuel. Once you’ve

checked in, you will meet in small groups with your assigned OLs, who will serve as

resources to you throughout Orientation and be familiar faces around campus when you

return for the fall semester.

NyLeesa Graham ’12

“There is a great mixture of clubs

and organizations that represent all

of the different people and interests

at Emmanuel.”

As an Administrative Orientation Leader, NyLeesa plays a big part in making your

Orientation experience memorable. She’s a Resident Assistant as well, so helping new

students adjust to college life is all in a day’s work for her. She’s a great resource to

students interested in getting involved on campus. A sociology major, she also minors

in information technology and is pursuing a certificate in Spanish. What she loves most

about Emmanuel? Campus events.

Orientation 2011

Orientation is more than an introduction to Emmanuel, it’s a glimpse into

what you can expect as a student here. It’s the start of the next chapter of

your life.

Meet the CoachBrendan McWilliams is the Head Coach of Men’s Lacrosse/Director of Lacrosse, overseeing both the men’s and women’s programs at Emmanuel. Previously, he was at the helm of the Kenyon College program, where he led the Lords to an NCAA Division III tournament appearance and was named the North Coast Athletic Conference Lacrosse Coach of the Year in 2006. In his last two seasons at Kenyon, McWilliams produced 15 all-conference players, as well as one All-American and two North-South All-Stars. During his tenure, the lacrosse program earned national rankings from both the USILA and the NCAA.

Before coaching at Kenyon, McWilliams spent time as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator at the University of Vermont and as an assistant coach at Tufts University. In between his stints at Vermont and Tufts, McWilliams spent two seasons as the head coach at Cherry Creek High School in Denver, Colorado, where he guided the 2002 boy’s lacrosse team to a 16-2 record and a Colorado state championship. As a student-athlete at Colorado College, he was a two-time captain of the lacrosse team and was selected to play in the prestigious North-South All-Star game.

Great Northeast Athletic ConferenceThe 2012 season will be the inaugural year for men’s lacrosse in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC). The conference champion will receive an automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Lacrosse tournament beginning in 2013. Participating teams will include Anna Maria College, Emerson College, Emmanuel College, Lasell College, Mount Ida College, Norwich University, Rivier College, Saint Joseph’s College (ME) and associate members Daniel Webster College and Becker College. Emmanuel College will play its inaugural season of DIII lacrosse as a member of the GNAC in the spring of 2012. The Saints will also play a competitive out-of-conference

schedule against nationally recognized programs.

About EmmanuelEmmanuel is a coed, residential, Catholic liberal arts and sciences college in the city of Boston. Its beautiful 17-acre campus is neighbored by a world-class medical center, two major art museums and Fenway Park. Our vibrant community of 1750 undergrad students gets involved with more than 90 clubs, organizations and activities, 17 Division III athletic teams, Emmanuel College Radio, Filmmakers at Emmanuel, intramurals and more.

A strong liberal arts and sciences education has been our proud tradition since 1919. Today we offer over 30 majors and areas of study including new programs in accounting, biostatistics, crime and justice, and sport management. Our unique location gives students the opportunity to explore real-world experiences through internships, research and strategic partnerships within the Longwood Medical and Academic Area and the city of Boston. Our students have interned with PUMA, Boston Police Crime Labs, the Massachusetts State House and professional sports organizations including the Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics and Major League Lacrosse, whose headquarters are in town.

FacilitiesThe Saints’ home venue is unlike any in Boston. The team plays on the brand-new synthetic turf field at Roberto Clemente Field, located across the street from Emmanuel’s campus. With its open-stadium design and the city’s skyline as its backdrop, Clemente Field makes for a unique playing experience. The facility is outfitted with new MUSCO lighting, scoreboard and plenty of spectator seating. In addition, the Saints have access to a state-of-the-art training facility in the Jean Yawkey Center, a new film room for game tape review and scouting, and a new locker room for men’s lacrosse. The St. Joseph Hall Fitness Center is updated with new platforms, racks, free weights, plate-loaded equipment and a separate cardio room.

“Coach McWilliams epitomized the work ethic, dedication and

competitiveness necessary to succeed as a student-athlete at

Colorado College. It is these qualities that make him a great fit for

Emmanuel College. With his knowledge, experience and

tremendous ties to the Boston area, he is the perfect choice to

lead this program.”

Steve Beville Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach, SUNY Cortland 2009 USILA Division III Coach of the Year

“For the student-athlete who is looking for a first-rate college

experience in the heart of Boston, as well as the opportunity

to play Division III college lacrosse, Emmanuel College

is a great option.”

Museo del PradoLas Meninas (The Maids of Honour) (1656) (Room 12)

Diego Velazquez (1599-1660) Spain

… that the Prado was originallyintended as a natural historymuseum.

… that during the Spanish Civil Warmany paintings were removed fromthe Prado for safekeeping. Manyended up in Switzerland and weretransported back on overnight trainsat the end of the war.

… that the 5-year-old PrincessMargarita would marry her uncle at14, become Empress of Austria at16 and die during childbirth at 22.

… that, as well as being her hus-band, Philip IV was also QueenMariana’s uncle.

… that according to legend PhilipIV smiled only 3 times in his life.

… that Pablo Picasso, the 20thcentury Spanish painter, wasobsessed with Las Meninas andpainted many versions of it.

• Look at the figure of the artist,Velazquez. Who is he looking at?Why?

• Look at the mirror on the backwall. Whose reflection can yousee?

• Bear in mind the reflection inthe mirror and the artist’s gaze:who are you?!

• Which later style of paintingdoes it remind you of?

By general critical consensus, this is considered one of thegreat masterpieces of European painting. It is also acomplex painting that rewards careful study. Entire bookshave been written about it, but we’ll try to keep this a littleshorter.

It is all of the following: a portrait of the 5-year-old PrincessMargarita and her staff; a portrait of her parents, King PhilipIV and Queen Marianna; a self-portrait; and a comment onthe importance of Art and The Artist.

What we have is Velazquez painting a portrait of the Kingand Queen whose reflection we can see in the far mirror. The Royal couple’s 5-year-old daughter, Princess Margarita, has been summoned along with her ladies-in-waiting, thecourt jesters and the dog, in order to keep the royal coupleamused (presumably because it can get boring having yourportrait painted).

Consider the riddles: it is a picture of the artist painting apicture we cannot see while he looks at you, the viewer,350 years later, whom he cannot see! Yet, being in thevirtual position of the King and Queen, you are included inthe composition: both Velazquez and the Princess arelooking at you! And is he painting the picture you’re nowlooking at—or is he painting a different picture?

Understanding the complexity of the visual relationships, itis hardly surprising that Velazquez has depicted himselfstanding back from the canvas, brush in hand, thinkingabout his painting (because after all, Velazquez is telling us,art is primarily an intellectual activity).

Get close and look at how Velazquez has painted thePrincess’ dress: the delicate flicks of color, the sketchybrushwork–you can literally see the light! Notice how theseemingly haphazard brushstrokes make sense as youmove away.

Velazquez’s brushwork and treatment of light wasinspirational to the later Impressionist painters, especiallyManet.
