The 12-member jury in Arthur Topham’s case heard testimony last week from lead investigator for the BC Hate Crime Team, Terry Wilson.

First crown questioned the witness, spending con-siderable time on a variety of literature on Topham’s website, www.radical-press.com.

One piece in particu-lar, Israel Must Perish, was heavily quoted from. Topham, the author of Israel Must Perish, wrote a preface explaining his motivation for taking pen

to paper, or finger to key-board.

“What is contained herein is but a synopsis and partial review of the verbatim text of an actual book first published in the USA back in early 1941 when America was still a neutral country. That book, Germany Must Per-ish! was written by a Jew-ish writer by the name of Theodore N. Kaufman. Its exact proposals are those contained herein,” it reads.

“As the reader will sur-mise from viewing the image of the back page of Kaufman’s book some of America’s most prestigious newspapers and maga-

zines were in full support of the objectives set down in this classic book of Jew-ish hate literature. Again, the reader is cautioned to bear in mind that I have changed the word “Nazi” to “Jew” in the quote from the Philadelphia Record as I have changed all the other words “German” and “Nazi” to “Jew” and “Zionist,” etc.

“The striking thing about the vileness of the text is how, today, it seems to roll off the mind’s tongue as if it were as truthful and fac-tual as the rising sun. As such I firmly believe that all of what the Zionist Jews write about others is

actually but a reflection of their own inner, perverse, dislocated self. By project-ing outward onto others their innate paranoid and deep-seated hatred for the rest of the world they’re able to meet the require-ments of the Israeli state’s motto which reads, “By Way of Deception Thou Shalt Cause War” and feel a sense of superiority and self-righteousness in doing so.”

The full text can be found on Topham’s site.

“If this book came across your desk, would you be concerned about its con-tents?” crown asked Wil-son.

“Yes, we would definite-ly investigate,” he replied.

Crown also questioned Wilson on a number of articles on the site, some authored by Topham, some not. Articles ranged from Topham’s views on WW1 as a planned event by Zionists, Jewish world leaders in control of bank-ing systems and articles on free speech.

Defence counsel Barclay Johnson, took the oppor-tunity to cross examine noting the use of the word “book” for Israel Must Perish, “rather than a sa-tirical article.”

Johnson also questioned Wilson on his reasoning

for investigating Topham and his site. Wilson testi-fied he did not move for-ward on the investigation until a complaint was filed to the Hate Crime Team.

Prior to the complaint, Wilson said, they had looked at the website and decided not to investigate. Wilson also noted the complainant was known to him prior.

Topham was arrested and his house searched in May 16, 2012 after it was determined “there were reasonable grounds the of-fence of promotion of ha-tred was committed.”

CITY COUNCIL NEWS

Use Change as an Opportunity to Reflect

Mayor Bob [email protected]

The switch to bi-weekly garbage pick-up ap-pears to be an issue for some residents who claim they cannot possibly manage their waste down to a bi-weekly pick-up schedule. I appreciate those concerns but challenge ev-eryone to use this change in the frequency of garbage pick-up to really examine our buying patterns and household waste production. Other communities have successfully switched to bi-weekly pick-up and we can too. Some communities are well on their way to achieving a zero-waste target -- a goal we should be as-piring to!

A 2012 report to the City pointed out that our landfill was filling faster than previously predicted and that the per-resident contribu-tion to that fill rate was higher than previously predicted. This is an unsustainable trend, some-thing we must all play a role in addressing. Ac-cording to this report our current landfill could be full by 2030 at the earliest – a mere 15 years from now. A 2014 report to Council estimated our landfill closure costs, not taking into ac-count finding a location for and creating a new landfill, to be $4.4 million in 2014 dollars (not accounting for inflation).

So, rather than merely try to save enough to cover the costs of closing our landfill in the future, it’s more proactive if we all reduce the waste we produce while Council aggressively looks at ways to enable more recycling and re-use. Reducing garbage pick-up frequency is a way to trigger people to reflect on what they are contributing to our landfill and to engage more households in our current recycling and reuse options.

Please, let’s view this change in the frequen-cy of garbage pick-up as a challenge to us all to consume less, recycle more, and reduce the amount of garbage we produce. If you really can’t manage your household waste produc-tion on a bi-weekly basis then you may switch to a larger container (which is huge!).

With respect to those concerned about the smell associated with a two-week schedule: re-ducing food waste by changing your food buy-ing habits will save you money while reducing the amount of organic materials you put into the dump. You can also compost that mate-rial, and we will be looking at ways to enable household composting while exploring larger scale composting options. Like most communi-ties, Quesnel’s landfill generates methane and we may have to vent that gas soon and may eventually be required to restrict or eliminate organic waste from the landfill in the future. So, reducing the amount of organic waste going into the landfill now will save us significant cap-ital and operating costs in the future.

With respect to those who feel they are get-ting half the service for the same fee: garbage pickup is only a small part of our entire waste management system and associated costs. The net financial savings from reducing the fre-quency of pick-up will simply help us address the incrementing costs of waste management.

Nancy Poulk Clouston of Quesnel, BC quietly passed away

Friday, Oct 23 2015 at the age of 83. Nancy Adeline Tellman was born March 7, 1932, the sixth and youngest

daughter of Vern and Alma Tellman of Lake City, Minnesota. It was the spring of the worst year of the Great Depression, but she was a sparkling child, with a stout constitution and joyful spirit that would carry her and those she loved for the rest of her life. So how can you sum up a life? How can you condense the experiences earned growing from sparkling child to young Army wife, from working mother to seasoned rancher? How can you sum up all of the little things that collect over a journey that stretches from Minnesota to California, across the Texas panhandle and the Colorado high country, to the pristine wilderness of the British Columbia Cariboo? Those who knew her, whether by her love of music, her winning smile, the hats she so fondly wore, or her books and poetry, know that you can’t.Nancy remains a much loved member of the Quesnel community and will be greatly missed. She is survived by three sisters, six children, seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, countless friends, and her dog.Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Quesnel and District Hospice Palliative Association, to whom we owe a special debt of gratitude, or the BC Cancer Foundation.Heartfelt thanks to Drs. Smit, Jascobsen, Appleby and Leeuwner, the staff of Quesnel Home Care Nursing, Fraserview Pharmacy and the Quesnel and Prince George Hospitals.A celebration of Nancy’s life will be held in Quesnel, details will follow.

The Northern Health Board recognized the work underway by Workplace Health and Safety to reduce staff injuries and lost time in health care facilities across northern B.C. during their regular meeting in Prince George last week.

From 2010 to 2015, Northern Health has seen a decrease in the duration of lost time for WorkSafeBC claims. This has also resulted in a decrease in the amount of overall claim dollars. Since 2010, the programs that have been put in place have prevented people from becoming injured in the workplace and this has saved Northern Health over $1.1 million.

“We want our staff and physicians to work in a safe environment, and for them to know that there

is support available if they are injured at work,” Dr. Charles Jago, Northern Health Board Chair said.

“A focus on our people is a pillar of the Northern Health Strategic Plan and these results are a re ection of the work that is being done.”

Programs that have been implemented include the Violence Prevention Program, the WorkSafeBC High Risk Strategy, Workplace Health and Safety Orientation for new hires and their managers, improving inspection guidelines for Workplace Health and Safety, and a work alone check-in program.

The Regional Dysphagia Management Team presented to the Board of Directors about the work

they have been doing with clinicians and patients. Dysphagia is a term used to describe dif culty, discomfort and disorders associated with swallowing. The regional team has created better methods for screening people who live in long term care facilities to identify those who are experiencing dysphagia. The team provides education and support for care providers as they care for people with dysphagia.

“We want to ensure the people we serve are getting the best care possible,” Cathy Ulrich, Northern Health’s President and Chief Executive Of cer said.

“The interprofessional collaboration in the Regional Dysphagia Management Team helps us to improve the quality

of life for the people experiencing this condition.”

The Northern Health board also celebrated award nominations and accolades for:

• HEABC Golden Apple Awards

• Health Care Hero golden apple– Heather Floris – Head Nurse St John Hospital in Vanderhoof

• Award of Merit – Duty to Accommodate Pilot Project: A Collaboration with HR Operations and Disability Management for Northern Health and Interior Health

• Canadian HR Awards 2015

• Nominated as a fi nalist for The Winds of Change Award for Best Health and Wellness Strategy for corporate health and well-being.

with Lee-Anne Williams B.Sc. (Pharm)An intrauterine device (IUD) is a very effective method of birth control. However only 5% of women use that method. Compared to birth control pills where there are 5-9 pregnancies per 100 women per year, for an IUD it is 1 out of 100. IUDs do not increase the risk of pelvic inflammatory disease or ectopic pregnancies. It’s a choice to consider as an alternative to the “pill”.It’s easy to confuse the term “nutritionist” and a registered dietitian. The latter can be the former but the former is most often not the latter. Anyone can call themselves a nutritionist but a registered dietitian must have a bachelor or master’s degree in nutrition and have done an internship of practical work before being registered. For best on nutrition advice, seek out an registered dietitian.Another space-age medical device available since 2012 is a handheld apparatus that will record your heart rhythm. It allows the storage of up to 20 measurements which can be downloaded into a computer and sent to your doctor. It’s called the HeartCheck Pen and can be used to help manage conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart arrhythmias and to monitor the effects of medicines.Hemorrhoids often aren’t noticed until there is blood in the stools. This could be a sign of other problems as well so it is important to get it checked. Colon cancer is one of these other problems and is most successfully treat when found early. There are medications to sooth mild cases of hemorrhoids. New provincial seats will be created in Surrey and Richmond-New Westminster for the next B.C. election, bringing the number of MLAs in the legislature to 87.

Justice Minister Suzanne Anton tabled legislation Thursday to adopt the recommendations of the latest B.C. Electoral Boundaries Commission and create the two new constituencies to reflect high-growth areas of provincial population.

The commission recommended changes to boundaries to 48 existing constituencies, after public hearings since it proposed the changes this spring to balance population. It was restricted by a law that prevents the elimination of electoral districts in areas outside the urban southwest.

The latest boundaries leave a wide range of populations to be represented by a single MLA. The lowest populations are Stikine with 20,616 and North

Coast with 22,382. At the other end of the scale are Vernon-Monashee, Vancouver-Fraserview and Vancouver-Kingsway, all with more than 62,000 people.

The hearings were dominated by conflicting views on changes to four areas:

• Severing Hope from Chilliwack and adding it to the Fraser-Nicola constituency, which extends into the Interior to include Merritt. Princeton is added

to the Boundary-Similkameen district.

• Rearranging boundaries in central Vancouver Island to create a new electoral district of Mid Island-Pacific Rim, anchored by Cumberland.

• Adding a new Surrey South district, bringing the total number of seats in Surrey to eight.

• Adding a new Richmond-Queensborough district, taking in part of New Westminster.

The last review in 2008 recommended that an urban

population shift should result in a reduction of one seat in the Cariboo-Thompson region and one in northern B.C. The government intervened keep those seats and increase the total constituencies from 83 to 85.

The B.C. Liberals and NDP agreed then that northern constituencies could

not get any larger and still be represented by a single MLA.

The 2008 review added seats in the Okanagan, Fraser Valley, Surrey, Burnaby-Tri-Cities and downtown Vancouver.

The commission’s report and maps are available on its website at bc-ebc.ca/reports

Seating in the B.C. legislature had to be al-tered to add a third row on each side to accom-modate 85 MLAs. After the 2017 election, two

more desks will have to be squeezed in.

remembering now — and as we get closer to the busy shopping season, a time when what we might receive at Christmas starts to cloud our minds. In fact, it’s something everyone, of any age, should have etched into their brains, as incidents of fraud and scams press on, seemingly unabated. That may sound a tad harsh or pes-

simistic. It should be a good thing if someone

steps up and wants to hand over thou-sands of dollars — or a bridge — for seemingly no reason. Or at least for no reason a person would reasonably ex-pect to have anything to do with them. Unfortunately, windfalls like that are usually pipe dreams.Whether it’s greed, a simple feeling of

not wanting to upset people or for some other reason, folks fall for scams all the time. And so, the scammers keep call-ing, emailing and writing, hoping for a response — just enough to encourage the behaviour. And once a person and their money

are parted, it’s exceedingly difficult for the authorities to get it back.Yet, police and financial institutions

fight hard to try to prevent scams and the people who run them from taking advantage of people. Even so, we can-not rely on them. Individuals must be on guard — for the day will come when someone will try to weasel our hard-earned cash from our pockets. When that happens, and the whole

thing makes you curious or uncomfort-able, just ask questions. Ask them who they are. Ask for their phone number. Ask for their boss. And then ask to phone them back. And if you are still not feeling good

about it, just hang up. It’s the equivalent of walking away from panhandlers on the street.Police continually tell us the best way

to find out if something is a scam or not, is to call the agency purported to be offering the windfall. Contact them directly and ask if the offer is on the up and up. Most times, if it’s a bank or Canada Revenue Agency, they’ll tell you it’s a scam and you should ignore it.There are people out there who want

to separate us from our money for nasty reasons. It’s up to us to know the differ-ence between them and the legitimately good people out there. Sometimes, all it takes to be sure is to ask.

Premier Christy Clark’s government has been steadily

backed into a corner on its apparent deletion of emails involving sensitive govern-ment topics.

A week-long barrage of accusations by the NDP op-position peaked with their most damning evidence of a cover-up, in the long-running case of eight health researchers suspended or fired from drug approval studies.

Most have been paid settlements or reinstated after the biggest personnel management blunder in memory. One committed suicide.

We are now into a second independent review of this tragic case, after an inde-pendent lawyer was unable to determine what went wrong, because she couldn’t compel testimony or demand records. It is now in the hands of B.C.’s new Ombudsperson, Jay Chalke, who has that authority.

Everyone agrees that the deputy health minister of the day, Graham Whit-marsh, was legally respon-sible for the decisions and records. Yet somehow the only record released to the NDP for the two-year pe-

riod of the firings and sub-sequent investigation was a heavily blanked-out update from his successor, Stephen Brown, to the premier’s deputy, John Dyble.

It refers to an “update on litigation resolution from investigation,” the substance of which is blanked out, and offers to discuss the situa-tion by phone.

Here’s an exchange be-tween NDP MLA Adrian Dix and Citizens’ Services Minister Amrik Virk:

Dix: “Can the minister explain why the Office of the Premier, the Deputy Minister to the Premier, has no records and why the suc-cessive Deputy Minister of Health had one record over two years?”

Virk: “The suggestion from the member opposite that there are no documents is false…. There are more documents now that the Ombudsperson has conduct

of the matter and is un-dertaking a comprehensive review. I fully expect that he will do a comprehensive review and will consent to the release of more docu-ments.”

There will be more sound and fury over this, but only Chalke’s report can provide new information. And even then, the damage is done, settlements and non-disclo-sure deals have been signed, and Clark and Health Minister Terry Lake have formally apologized.

The larger issue is how freedom of information legislation should work. Should the opposition be able to second-guess deci-sions of bureaucrats by go-ing through their emails?

The traditional answer is no. Elected officials are responsible, even if they had no actual role, as should always be the case in hiring and firing ministry staff and awarding government work contracts. The buck stops with Lake and Clark, not their deputies.

There are sound reasons for this. Consider another sensitive decision, to shoot wolves from the air in a last-ditch effort to preserve dwindling mountain cari-bou herds.

Protesters, pop stars and politicians can sound off as they like, but these hard decisions are made and car-ried out by wildlife experts working for or consulted by the province.

The minister, in this case Forests Minister Steve Thomson, authorizes the use of helicopters and rifles and takes the political con-sequences.

One can imagine the ago-nizing discussion that goes on behind the scenes, as provincial and First Nations wildlife experts watch cari-bou herds dwindle despite widespread habitat protec-tion efforts. They not only make the technical call, they have to pull the trigger.

Would wildlife biologists be able to provide frank advice for or against this decision if they knew their names and opinions could later be used in a political battle in the legislature and in the streets?

No. And can you run a public service if everyone is subjected to the scrutiny that only politicians choose to endure? No.

Editor:We attended the 42nd Annual traditional

POW Wow Oct. 9-11 put on by the Quesnel Tillicum Society.

It was held at the Quesnel Youth Soccer Building Indoor Field. We made a weekend of it, which we enjoyed and by sharing hope oth-ers will attend next year. We had never attend-ed before and went with our three grandchil-dren who are five, eight and 11. Friday was a welcome and warm-up and Saturday was the grand entry, which included music, drums, singers and traditional clothing. Devin Belle-rose was the master of ceremonies and gave a lot of history and information in a story way about the different people who had travelled to attend. Our grandchildren were very interested in the different language and clothing, which was a fantastic learning experience and they also had elders speaking of history and family.

We went to dinner Saturday night at the Na-tive Friendship Centre where we were made so welcome. The stories and prayers were very special. For dinner there was turkey, ham, fish, salads, vegetables, soup, bannock and three types of desserts. Dinner began and we sat and waited until others began to be served. Then two people came to our table and told us we’re guests and to please go and get our plates and eat.

The people around us told our grandchil-dren about what their favourite foods were and how they were made (a type of jerky and bannock). When it was time for us to leave we thanked them for their very warm and won-derful company. Our grandchildren thanked the ladies who had cooked and served the food.

Sunday saw a variety of different drumming and music, which included potato dance, owl dance, tiny tots and men’s dances. There was a variety of vendors and beautiful items. They included porcupine quill earrings, bark bitten pictures, beautiful dresses with bells over them, etc. The vendors were very interesting and shared how items were made and what their background was.

There is a huge list of various entities that made the event possible with sponsorship and funding. The Pow Wow entry was everyday and dinner was free. Hope to see you next year.

ANNIE GALLANTObserver Reporter

Kathy Breadner has met the Queen of England and the

matriarch of the guiding movement Lady Olave Baden-Powell along with many, many other memorable experiences in her 55 years with Girl Guides of Canada (GGC.)

“I couldn’t wait to turn eight so I could join Brownies,” Kathy said.

“That was back when the promise included God and the King – that tells you how long ago that was.”

Living in the Lower Mainland, Kathy joined a Brownie Pack in North Burnaby.

“Brown Owl would take us on nature walks almost every weekend,” she said.

“We collected pennies for the World Friendship Fund. We’d make a picture with the pennies and send them in.”

Kathy remembers their was more emphasis on challenges, testing and passing milestones with the GGC.

“For my Golden Hand (Brownies) I hand knitted an eight-inch square, we also had to know how to light a match and light

a candle. I still teach the Girl Guides how to properly light and manage a match. We also had to learn the signalling system Semaphore.”

Semaphore is a series of signals conveyed through the use of ags, primarily for military and naval applications.

This close association with military ways began with the founder of the scouting movement, Lord Baden-Powell who had a prestigious military background. He noticed young boys assisting enlisted soldiers and decided in 1908 to write a book Scouting for Boys and in 1910, after young girls clamoured to join the scouting organization, under the direction of his sister Agnes Baden-Powell and later his wife Lady Olave Baden-Powell, the Girl Guides organization was founded.

The military in uence extended to the Girl Guides in the form of their uniform, the testing process and marching and parade requirements. Survival and woods skills were also taught as this also extended from soldier training.

Brownies were the rst level of the Girl Guides

of Canada for girls in Kathy’s age group; and when she ew up to Guides level she said this was the largest group, sometimes numbering as many as 36 girls.

“There were so much more testing done then today – it was a big deal – if you failed you had to wait until next year to try again.”

Kathy added much of the activities back then were to teach skills that would be tested and much of their testing was based on military standards.

Kathy has an impressive blanket that chronicles her time as a Girl Guide and some of her time as a Ranger. Unfortunately her badges from Brownies have been lost but she remembers clearly her rst badge was a Second Class Guide badge when she was around 12 years old.

“The most interesting and most memorable badges were Friend to the Deaf and Friend to the Blind. I spent time with deaf people and blind people,” she said.

“But I’m most proud of achieving my Gold Chord.”

She has fond memories of time spent in the woods

in North Burnaby and the Lower Mainland, learning nature and survival skills as well as leadership and friendship skills.

It was while she was a Sea Ranger (she was 16 years old at the time) she and some of her fellow Rangers were asked to attend a garden party in Victoria where the guest of honour was Queen Elizabeth II.

“Queen Elizabeth arrived by navy ship and I was then invited to be introduced to the Queen,” Kathy said.

“A Star Weekly reporter happened to be there and captured the moment for the paper.”

The Guiding movement was a major part of Kathy’s social life and she still treasures friends she met through the Rangers.

After Rangers, Kathy volunteered her time as a leader and attended many provincial and national camps and events. One such camp was the National Heritage Camp on an island in the St. Lawrence River. Guiders were invited from countries around the world.

Lady Baden-Powell travelled from England for a part of the camp and

while there, attempted to speak to as many of the attendees as possible. Kathy was in the food tent doling out supplies for the patrols when she sensed someone was behind her. She turned around and its was Lady Baden-Powell.

“I was so amazed and later regretted not having a camera handy,” she said.

“She was a kind, gentle woman with so much wisdom.”

Over her years with GGC, Kathy has seen many changes. As a leader, there have also been many changes.

She recalls when she rst became a leader at the age of 24, she was the oldest of ve leaders in a guiding company of 36 girls.

Now 55 years later, Kathy recognizes guiding suited her lifestyle.

“Girl Guides de ned my life, I learned so many skills,” she said.

“And when you teach the promise and the law for so many years, it becomes a part of you.”

She has served in many administrative capacities right up to the provincial level, she’s taken girls all over Canada and is currently a trainer for new leaders.

Kathy joined the Quesnel Guiding organization as a music advisor until her two daughters joined GGC. She then followed them through the program and is now proudly watching over her granddaughter in Girl Guides.

“We’re an organization that develops all aspects to life at age appropriate levels and certainly promotes international awareness.”

When asked why men are not part of Girl Guides, Kathy was quick to say GGC wants the girls to be strong, independent leaders in society and not relying on men. Even back when the edgling organization was de ning itself, Girl Guides were designed to focus on the girl.

Kathy encourages young girls to consider joining GGC.

“Come and join us and see how much fun it is,” she said.

She added training is available for those wishing to become leaders.

“I can honestly say I truly believe in the organization,” Kathy said.

“I wouldn’t still be involved if I didn’t.”

LIFESTYLES

This is the second in a trio of articles Fred Rogger wrote about his battle elds and cemeteries tour in the Netherlands. He was exploring the Canadian experience there in the Second World War.

I had never been to the Netherlands before this WW2 study tour and the country`s geography has left a lasting impression on me because of its impact on the battle elds we studied. Aptly named one of the low countries, the Netherlands is arguably the attest country on earth and literally mean “low lands.”

Thanks, Captain Obvious, you’re thinking, because isn’t it, well, obvious that for every battle fought, army leaders must take into account the topography where the ghting occurs? Yes, yes indeed, but in the Netherlands this is intensi ed by the very fact of its exceptionally unusual level landscape, half of which has been reclaimed from the sea.

Think about ghting a battle on ground so at you cannot see over the next hedgerow, let alone gain an advantage by taking a high point and seeing your enemy’s position. There is no high

ground. Several of the battles for the Scheldt estuary, for example, were fought on land that was arguably below sea level, on level elds called polders that are bordered by dykes and crisscrossed by slightly raised roads. They become lethal and complicated when considering that both the Germans and Canadians intentionally ooded the battle elds. Now ponder slogging through a couple feet of water and mud with a 70-pound pack on your back while your enemy if stra ng, mortaring and bombing the ground around you. This is the battle of the Breskens Pocket in microcosm, ditches and canals, below sea level elds, soaked from the incessant rains of October 1944, trying to cross under heavy re the Leopold Canal and other minor waterways. Up and over a raised ditch, across a narrow road, down the other side; repeat until you reach the Scheldt. And consider this: conditions listed above in unending 2 degree drizzle against a ferocious enemy with nothing to lose. It was six weeks of seemingly unending hell but victory nally came in early November when Breskens was taken

by the Canadians. Not surprisingly, the casualty rate was enormous.

It was short-lived relief because from Breskens looking across to Walcheren Island and peninsula, one would think the reinforced German fortress, the strongest on the Atlantic built to protect the entrance to Antwerp, would be impenetrable, but it wasn’t because the brilliant Canadian general Guy Simonds said it wasn’t. With scant reinforcements and supplies, and the heavy assets needed for Operation Market Garden, Simonds devised a plan based on the geography of Walcheren. This island peninsula attached by a sliver of an isthmus only existed as physical land because the Dutch had created a massive dyke system to take it back from the sea. It is a testament to both the ingenuity of human beings and their utter fragility at the same time. We see

this when General Simonds decides to blow up the dykes at Westkapelle and ood Walcheren as a strategy to defeat the German fortress by handicapping German mobility and swamping their many large artillery positions. Use of the “buffalo” amphibious armoured personnel carriers helped Canadians maneuver through the ooded polders. The island went from land to sea in hours and the battle eld changed once again, as the Canadian “water rats” used soaked elds to their advantage. At the same time as Walcheren was ooded and attacked, the ridge at Woensdrecht, the only “high” ground on the Scheldt coast, is overrun by Canadian forces making their way to the thin slip of a causeway connecting Walcheren to the mainland. Here, more conventional weapons like tanks were used because the ground

allowed it. Armies learning on

the go, adapting and improvising tactics, dealing creatively on a shoestring budget with the immediate realities of the topography in front of them, that’s the battle for the Netherlands in a nutshell. And it’s one the Canadians were able to crack time and again on their way to victory and liberation for the devastated Dutch. The Canadians were the Little Army That Could and Did!

RYAN GRAHAMObserver Reporter

After a magical year, which saw the To-ronto Blue Jays clinch their first playoff ap-pearance in 22 years, the Jays run has come to an end. Toronto’s post-season got off to a rocky start, as they fell two games behind the Texas Rangers in the American League Division Series, but managed to fight back to win the series.

That series saw Toronto win three straight games to complete the come-back. Game five of the series finished with a bang, as a three-run home run decided it for Toronto in the bottom of the seventh, courtesy of Jose Bautista.

With three run-ners on and Toronto down a run, Bautista delivered for the Jays and Canada, belting the go ahead home run putting the crowd and country into pandemonium. The American League Championship Series saw the same events, as Toronto fell behind two games again and had to fight their way back. The Jays won two of the three games that were in Toronto to keep the series close, but couldn’t find a way to pull out a win to the eventual World Series champions Kansas City Royals. The Jays had controversial calls go against them, which became factors in deciding the game.

The second inning saw Mike Moustakas of the Royals hit a home run that looked like it was going to hit off the top of the wall and bounce back into play, but before it could do so a Kan-sas City fan reached down catching the ball. After the review it was decided that the fan did not inter-fere with the ball and was ruled a home run instead of a double. Another call was in the ninth inning, as there was two questionable strike calls on Toronto’s Ben Revere and perceived balks that went un-called. Although, the Jays did not have the calls go their way it should not discourage their strong season, as they clinched the American League East title, finishing with 93 wins and 69 loses. Some questions going into the off-season will be if they will re-sign starting pitcher David Price. He was instrumental for To-ronto, as he pulled off nine wins in 11 games helping Toronto reach the playoffs, giv-ing them a true ace starting pitcher they have needed since Roy Halladay. Price has also admitted that he would be open to re-signing in Toronto. Only time will tell what moves the Jays will make, but it will be an interesting off-season to see how they build off the run they made that captivated an entire country.

Carbon monoxide (CO) has taken the lives of entire Canadian families, left scores of people with debilitating physical and mental handi-caps, and sent thousands more to clinics and emer-gency rooms. It has even inspired new legislation in Ontario and the Yukon.

So why are homeowners still so slow to install the one inexpensive safety device that protects their family from this deadly gas?

“Carbon monoxide safety comes down to awareness and education,” Carol Heller, a home safety specialist with Kidde Canada, said.

“First you need to realize the danger is very real. Sec-ond, you need to know the potential sources of CO in your home. Lastly, you need to feel confident in choosing an alarm that fits your home lifestyle.”

Many times, people think they don’t need a carbon monoxide alarm because they have electric baseboard heaters. But they overlook the fact that they may have a

gas or propane water heater or stove, a gas or wood fire-place, or a garage or carport attached to their house.

“All these are potential sources of CO,” notes Heller.

As long as carbon monox-ide is safely vented outside, there is no danger. But if ap-pliances or heating systems are not properly maintained, or chimneys and vents become blocked or cracked, deadly CO can seep back into your home, and you won’t even know it.

Since the symptoms of exposure to CO mimic the flu, many people make the mistake of thinking what they are experiencing will just “go away” in time. So they stay home from work or school hoping to get bet-ter, and exactly the opposite happens.

Fortunately, protecting your family from carbon monoxide in your home is relatively simple and inex-pensive. You can find CSA-approved CO alarms in any quality hardware store at an average cost of between $30

and $60. That’s about two cents a day over an alarm’s lifespan.

It’s important (and some-times law) to have one working CO alarm outside all sleeping areas. Better yet is adding one per floor, as well. Once Canadians make the smart decision to put a CO alarm in place, it’s best to look for “Worry-Free” models that feature a 10-year sealed lithium battery that doesn’t need to be changed for the life of the alarm, plus, a continuous digital readout.

“Never having to replace a battery for the 10-year life of the alarm is something consumers told us was very important,” Heller said.

“The digital readout is also popular because it shows you if lower levels of CO are present in your home. This way you can take action be-fore the gas reaches danger-ous levels.”

More CO safety tips can be found at www.safeathome.ca.

Know the sources of carbon monoxide in your home

As we rely more and more on digital tools to conduct our daily business, an ever-growing number of face-to-face interac-tions are going through com-puters and smartphones. These devices help your child discover the world around them, stay in touch with friends and fam-ily, and pursue their interests. However, while being immersed in these digital worlds, it can be easy to forget that real people are on the receiving end of their online messages, texts, games, and social media posts.

As parents, we strive to teach our kids the importance of being kind, generous and respectful members of society. It is important to emphasize the role that ethics and values play when using technology. Here are some points you can discuss with your child to help them stay a safe, considerate, and respectful cyber citizen:

• Online activities can have a real impact on your child’s future opportunities. Remind them that what they post online—even when they do it

anonymously—will either build or harm their reputation. Party pictures, embarrassing videos, or incriminating posts may seem harmless now, but em-ployers and selection commit-tees take a harsher stand and will review a candidate’s online presence as far as possible.

• Being unkind online could be illegal. Discuss with them the reality that ‘liking’ or sharing a post that humiliates, torments, or harasses another person is a form of cyberbully-ing. It’s not just about causing pain and humiliation: it could also mean that your child could face criminal charges for their participation.

• Sharing photos without permission has serious conse-quences. It may be an awkward subject to approach, but the act of sharing explicit content with someone (sexting) can have serious consequences on those involved, including prosecu-tion under new legislation in Canada that has made the non-consensual distribution of intimate images illegal.

• Staying safe online also includes staying away from downloads, torrents, and pi-rated material. Part of being a safe and respectful cyber citizen involves respecting copyright laws when obtaining movies, music or software. Not only does this prevent them from facing criminal charges, but it also reduces the likelihood of getting their device exposed to viruses and malicious software (which can then infect your entire network).

The cyber ethics that you discuss with your child will help them make good decisions online. Keeping the lines of communication open, setting ground rules for their online activity, and having frank con-versations with your child will ensure that they take advantage of everything the digital lifestyle has to offer, with minimal hurt to them or anyone around.
