Quesnel River Pulp is back up and running after lightning hit hydro lines.

Lightning hit the main power lines feeding the mill Monday evening.

“The alarm system kicked in, we then had all the employees meet

at the muster station,” vice-president of pulp and energy Peter Rippon said, adding as an “abundance of caution” vehicles were not allowed access to the site.

BC Hydro attended the scene and Rippon said the mill was expected to be fully operational by Wednesday evening.

“Start up takes about 12 to 24 hours,” he said.

“It really depends though. It’s a lot of work and expense, but it happens.”

Suspect identified The man associated in a

stand off with police last week has been identified and formally charged.

Scott William Holland, 31 is charged with three counts of assault with a weapon, two of uttering threats and one of uttering threats to burn, damage or destroy.

Holland has been remanded until his next

court appearance, Aug. 27. The police incident began shortly after 2:30 a.m., Aug. 6 when RCMP were called to the Poplar Avenue residence for a disturbance.

Due to safety concerns which presented themselves during the investigation, the RCMP’s Emergency Response

Team was deployed.After successful

negotiation with police, the male suspect exited the residence and surrendered at approximately 1:30 p.m. He was arrested and taken into police custody without further incident.

During negotiations 11 homes were evacuated.

“One of Quesnel’s oldest landmarks disappeared yesterday when wreckers demolished the old Observer Building on Reid Street. Thee main portion of the old building was erected in the mid-1870s, as a residence for the late Joseph St. Laurent, road foreman on the then newly constructed Cariboo Road between Quesnel and Barkerville. About 1923, the building was purchased by the Late J.G. Hutchcroft and converted into business premises for The Cariboo Observer, which was published in the building until early 1950.”

B.C. businessman David Black has been forced to seek Canadian lenders to build his proposed oil re� nery near Kitimat at the insistence of the Chinese bank that would act as the main � nancier.

The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China declined to fully � nance the $25-billion project, Black said, sending him to � nd a quarter of the required money within Canada.

“It really came down to the fact that they wanted some skin in the game out of Canada and they would put 75 per cent of the money up for the re� nery,” he said Monday.

Black has billed the project, announced a year ago, as a way to create thousands of jobs in B.C. re� ning Alberta crude oil while ensuring diluted bitumen isn’t shipped in tankers, eliminating one of the biggest objections to construction of the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline that could

supply the crude.Black is advancing the

project through his � rm Kitimat Clean Ltd., but is also majority owner of the Black Press group of community newspapers in B.C., including this paper.

He said he believes he has found lenders in Canada but gave no details, except to say he does not intend to take on equity investors.

“It’s too early to say where or how, but I think it’s there,” he said.

“Financially, it’s going to work out.”

He aims to � le a project description with the provincial government in September to initiate the environmental review process.

None of the major North American oil companies have expressed any interest in � nancing or partnering on the re� nery but Black said that’s no surprise.

Oil extraction is traditionally more pro� table than re� ning, he said, and the biggest energy � rms may not want a new re� nery competing against ones they already own.

“I understand all that and decided early on I just had to � nd a way around that and I think I’ve found it.”

The $25-billion cost includes roughly $16 billion for the re� nery – more than initially estimated due to a new re� ning process that promises to emit half as much greenhouse gas – with the rest covering a natural gas pipeline, a � eet of tankers and the cost of the oil pipeline, if necessary.

Besides securing � nancing, Black said he must secure sites for the re� nery and the marine terminal with the Kitselas and Haisla � rst nations, determine if inland � rst nations along the proposed pipeline corridor can come on board and to button down formal supply agreements with Canadian oil companies.

He said an engineering � rm from Calgary has endorsed the alternative re� ning process.

Black reiterated his position that he could build the re� nery even if the Enbridge’s Northern Gateway pipeline project is rejected and instead

bring oil via train, but he emphasized pipelines are safer.

“I really hope it doesn’t come to that – I really hope we can do the pipeline.”

A pipeline would bring money and bene� ts for � rst nations and local communities that wouldn’t come with rail shipments, he added.

Oil-on-rail shipments have been growing quickly as a way to get Alberta oil to market, but a pall was cast over the method last month when a runaway train carrying light crude oil exploded and destroyed the heart of Lac-Mégantic, Quebec.

Black said it’s not clear to him whether there would be a risk of explosion with the rail shipment of diluted oil sands bitumen, but said he would welcome research to address that question.

Sending the required oil by rail would add 12 trains per day on the CN Rail line across northern B.C. and Black said that would mean a signi� cant increase in noise and traf� c disruption in northern towns.

Lightning causes 17 fires in Gold Pan areaCariboo Fire

Centre/Wildfire Management Branch crews responded to 100 wildfires over the August long weekend.

There were a total of 95 lightning-caused wildfires with 22 starts on Thursday evening, 31 on Friday, 22 on Saturday, 10 on Sunday, nine on Monday and one this morning.

The majority of fires were small spot size (0.009 hectares) and were quickly put out by firefighting crews, including local contract crews. Airtankers, helicopters and heavy equipment also lent support. The biggest fire was 5.1 hectares near the Willow River east of Quesnel and is in mop-up stage.

Currently, there are 17 wildfires burning in the CFC: 14 are in initial attack stage while three are in modified response and are being monitored. No values

were at risk as of Wednesday.

The Central Cariboo/Horsefly-Likely region saw the most action with 30 lightning-caused starts; 100 Mile House saw 27; and Quesnel and Central Cariboo/Williams Lake had 17 each. The Chilcotin was relatively quiet with four starts.

Unfortunately, there were also five person-caused wildfires: three in the Central Cariboo/Horsefly-Likely region; two in 100 Mile House.

The number of lightning storms and the resulting wildfires serve as a reminder that continued vigilance is required in preventing person-caused fires, letting the CFC/WMB focus its efforts on naturally occurring fires.

Despite the accompanying precipitation, the fire danger rating in the CFC is

moderate, with large areas of high in the region’s north, west and east, and pockets of extreme forecast for Nazko, Quesnel, Middle Lake and Tautri in the Chilcotin, Likely and Prairie Creek, near Horsefly Lake. Sight, hearing, touch, taste or smell – which of the five senses

would you be most willing to give up?

It’s one of those questions I often ask people because I’ve thought about it so many times over the years myself. For me it is a toss up between taste and smell. Taste because I wouldn’t mind losing some weight, and smell because so many things are stinky.

But then I think about the incredibly delicious foods and drinks I’d never get to savour, and all the wonderful aromas I wouldn’t want to miss.

One thing is for certain: I’d least of all want to part with my sight.  

When I was a child I remember watching Miracle Worker for the first time. It was a movie about the incredible life of Helen Keller, who lost her ability to see and hear when she was 19 months old due to an illness. Until then, I’d never heard of anyone being blind or deaf, let alone both.

Deeply affected, I started to imagine what life must have been like for her. I couldn’t figure out a way to make myself temporarily deaf, but I’d frequently put

a blindfold on and for long periods of time I would roam around the house, trying to experience what it would be like to be blind.  After a while I would take the blindfold off and have a much stronger appreciation for my glorious ability to see.

I was reminded of that a few days ago when my 10-year-old daughter, Daisy, and her friend were doing the same thing. They’d been watching a TV series with a blind character in it. Unfortunately it wasn’t anything as inspiring as Miracle Worker.

I took them out for lunch the next day and my daughter’s friend wore dark sunglasses and closed her eyes as she entered Boston Pizza, still pretending she was blind. It was obvious to anyone watching that she was a child just pretending,

but she didn’t know that and wanted to keep up her act.

The owner of the restaurant kindly played along, bringing a Braille menu to Niya and I thought of the line that Helen Keller’s instructor said early on in the movie: “Language is more important to the mind, than light is to the eye.”

That made so much sense to me.

Living without sight or hearing, or any of the senses, would make life significantly more challenging. But to live without language and communication would be an unthinkable isolation.

Advances in modern technology have far fewer people using braille and the owner said none of his blind customers had ever taken him up on his offer of the Braille menu.

Now DAISY Books are the emerging world standard for digital screen-reader software for people who are blind or visually impaired. The DAISY (the Digital Accessible Information System) attempts to give the reader the same flexibility that readers of standard print enjoy: navigation by

chapter, section, subsection and page. 

Of course, my daughter loves that it has the same name as her and is thrilled that blind people can read too.

“Books are good for your brain cells,” she likes to say. 

More than ever we are living in an age of communication, able to instantly talk to people on the other side of the world via the Internet and learn from one another. If Helen Keller had lived to experience this level of modern technology, she would have embraced it fearlessly I’m sure.

One of my favourite quotes of hers is this: “Once I knew only darkness and stillness... my life was without past or future... but a little word from the fingers of another fell into my hand that clutched at emptiness, and my heart leaped to the rapture of living.”

This week my kids and I will watch The Miracle Worker and our appreciation for life as we know it will grow.

Turning darkness into light

Smart choicesThey’re called smartphones but

the way some people use them is anything but smart, giving

us all legitimate cause for concern about public safety.A new poll that shows that 64

per cent of adults in B.C. own a smartphone also reveals, more disturbingly, that about 18 per cent of those who do consider themselves “strongly addicted to the device.”Predictably, the majority who

placed themselves in that particular category describe their addiction as “manageable.” It’s a rare addict, after all, who acknowledges his or her addiction — whatever it is — is galloping out of control. That all changes, of course, when the addict is faced with incontrovertible evidence — usually some severe crisis or tragedy — that calls for an immediate change in behaviour.The question is, should we, as a

society, be expected to pay the price of such a crisis or tragedy? Particularly when it’s something like an accident caused by driving without due care and attention?Smartphones offer entertainment

and information through a multitude of apps and they have very practical uses in terms of communication, particularly in emergencies, that have, so far, merely scratched the surface of their potential.But it’s no news they also function as

a distraction. According to the recent poll, those who describe themselves as addicted estimate they spend an average of 2.5 of their waking hours staring at their diminutive keypads and screens. If that 2.5 hours were spent in one block of time, it might be a different matter but it’s spread throughout the day, usually while the users are multi-tasking in some way.We should all be more aware of the

imminent dangers such devices present and to make sure that we are actually controlling them — not the other way around.The human animal is flawed and

there is always the temptation to make just one short call, check one detail, complete a half-finished text or glance at that incoming message. A quick look, a few more words, just this once — who could it hurt?The answer is not only ourselves but

Our poor tourists are so confused.

The line on the highway directs them into the right turning lane then they find out they can not go straight because someone allowed two parking spots on the through fare. When we are travelling it is a lot easier to see two hanging signs where most of us look for direction when travelling through town.

Come on people, this is not rocket science.

many volunteers who put together the SkyFest air show.

What can we say about the pilots that performed and demonstrated their skills this weekend? They were absolutely amazing. The stunts and aerobatics were as unbelievable as they were heart-pounding.

Comedy, sky-diving and women who make people realize their dreams are not just something to think about.

The Snowbirds precision was beyond any of our understanding. To see all of those formations carried out was just awesome. And then, to have a shout out to two of our very own veterans in the community – what an honour.

What a weekend, but I can’t help thinking as we’re were all blown away by the show and bravery that there are some places in the world today that these formations are not taking place for demonstration.

We really have no idea how lucky we are to live in a country where there were those before us, and some from our own generation, that have offered the true and ultimate sacrifice so we have the freedoms and opportunities to see such skilled and dedicated people.

So the next time you meet or hear of a retired veteran shake their hand and thank them.

Curiosity led Bill Cave to enquire about freemasonry, however commitment to becoming a better person drove him to � nd out more.

“I began pondering the men we knew who we admired – for a variety of reasons,” he said.

“Research revealed a vast majority were freemasons. Those I identi� ed as freemasons were all good men.”

Cave knew his grandfather and several acquaintances were free-masons but it wasn’t until he made enquiries (all incentive to join the Masonic Order must stem from the individual, not the organization) about joining that he was ap-proached by a local mason and the process began.

“A candidate is ‘under the tongue of good report’,” Cave said.“The investigating committee determines if you conform to the

principles of freemasonry.”After a personal interview, the investigating committee takes

their � ndings to the lodge – a favourable � nding then moves to a lodge vote.

“I’ve not been disappointed, freemasons are all what they espouse to be,” Cave said.

“Helping good men become better.”Freemasonry has provided Cave with the opportunity to learn

valuable life lessons and allowed him to seek of� ce includ-ing Master of Quesnel Lodge, Barkerville Lodge. Then he was invited to become Grand Marshall for the Grand Lodge of B.C. and Yukon, where he was called upon to help develop a strate-gic plan for the Grand Lodge.

Ultimately Cave was elected to Grand Master of the B.C. and Yukon Grand Lodge.

Regardless of how many of� ces he held, Cave understand one of the founding tenets of freemasonry – all men are equal in the lodge. Each man comes to freemasonry equal. The organization provides a moral benchmark and regardless of the life path, freemasons can go as far as they choose in the organization.

Perceived by many to be a secretive organization, Cave said with time freemasons recognize that the profound knowledge and if you will, secrets, are the changes that take place in a member’s heart, mind and spirit.

“Freemasons are quiet, humble servants to their family, com-munity and their lodge,” he said.

“Masons don’t publicly fundraise either, any charitable contri-butions come from members’ pockets.”

Cave, although not currently in a freemason of� ce (he still serves Grand Lodge through a number of committees), contin-ues to be an active masonic member and strives to be a better person.

At the Art Gallery, there was a variety of presentations, among them stained glass, felt butter� ies, acrylics, and photography. Well worth the trip!

You have to love summer...the visitors to the Museum have increased 10-fold

and the Gift Shop is � ourishing. And that Gift Shop is not just for tourists. If you are looking for a unique gift for a birthday or anniversary, the jade jewellery section is a � ne example of craftsmanship. If somebody asked you to name a B.C.

family associated with nature and birding, chances are you would think of the Cannings family

of the Okanagan. Father and son team, Richard and Russell Cannings, collaborated on an exciting and much anticipated new book, Bird� nding in British Columbia.

Quesnel Birding Club, Baker Creek Enhancement Society and the City of Quesnel are hosting Russell Cannings on Aug 28, at the City Council Chambers, Quesnel City Hall, 410 Kinchant St, starting at 7 p.m.

Dick is well known for his input to CBC Radio. He is an experienced naturalist-biologist currently working for Bird Studies Canada as the national co-ordinator for Christmas Birdcounts, e-bird and the Nocturnal Owl Survey.

Russell is 26 and holds a history and English degree from UBC Okanagan. Although growing up surrounded by the in� uence of nature and birds, he only seriously got into birding in 2007 when working in Central B.C. It was

his � rst time out of the Okanagan Valley for a while and he enjoyed trying to work out the songs of alder and willow � ycatchers and American redstarts.

An intense passion for birding was sparked, culminating in Russ undertaking a B.C. Big Year in 2010, clocking-up a new record of 373 species for the province. Russ has worked on a plethora of nature-related projects and is a well-known and respected Birding Guide for Avocet Tours. He recently returned from an extensive and incredibly exciting birding tour of Australasia. His amazing adventures can be followed online via the Russell Cannings blogspot. Away from birding, he enjoys playing soccer and guitar, watching hockey and live comedy and retains an interest in history.

Russ explained how the book, Bird� nding in British Columbia, came about.

“I had been toying with the book idea for a while, because I could clearly see a need for it in B.C., given the fact that this is such a great area for birding, lots of people visit and there was no up-to-

date or all-inclusive guide. After attaining my degree, I had a bit of writing experience under my belt and I also had the Big Year dream. The book was essentially how I justi� ed taking a whole year-off to bird, according to my parents. My Dad’s publishers had already been bugging us about a father-son book collaboration and so this seemed like an obvious

starting point. Once I � nished the year birding, I had loads of notes from all over the province. I had bene� tted from a tremendous amount of local tips and secrets and � nally I could get most of that down in one place for the world to see. My Dad’s writing background was a great in� uence on shaping the book and the overall context. While I covered most

of the bird� nding content, he also helped a fair bit with that and it was great that between the two of us we had been to most of the province.”

 Russ will be talking about the new book, and about some of his favourite lesser-known birding areas of B.C. He will also partake in a Q&A session and will be available to sign copies of the new book.

North Cariboo Aboriginal Family Program Society (Longname Society) needed a new home, however � nding the right building, the right location, at the right price (every prospective home buyer’s biggest challenge) proved to be just such a challenge.

With all the programs and services offered by NCAFPS, careful consideration was given to several options in the community.

They looked at the former CDC building on Hoy Street, but were concerned about its condition (it had been empty for several years) and whether or not it could accommodate the complex needs of the organization.

“I didn’t necessary see it as the solution,”

NCAFPS capacity services coordinator Karen Borsato said.

“But our team leader Lorene Pulles has the vision and imagination for what could be.”

Once they decided this was the building for them, the next challenge was � nding the funding to make it a reality.

So they hit the road looking for � nancing, not only to purchase the building but also for much-needed renovations.

The purchase price was $175,000 and renovations would run $166,000.

Funding proposals were written and sent.

Western Economic Diversi� cation Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund provided cost-sharing for the renovation project and Community Futures Development Corporation of

the North Cariboo provided support, guidance and mortgage � nancing.

“Our monthly housing costs have been cut in half with purchasing this building compared to what we were paying in rent previously,” Borsato said.

As for the renovations, the building needed a lot of work.

It required electrical work, a new roof, all new energy-ef� cient windows, insulation, and all new heating system, � ooring, layout restructuring, all new playground equipment, external upgrades including ramps, decks, stairs, railings and signage and upgrading the kitchen to a licensed, commercial grade facility for the community kitchen program – a lot of work.

“I would also like to thank the CNC

carpentry class for the beautiful pergola and planters they built for us. We now have a wonderful elders garden with � owers, benches and a

tranquil atmosphere,” she said.

“Also a big thank you to Tolko Industries for lumber for the playground.”

Borsato said they

are looking forward to saving money with this move, which can be devoted to client services.

“We’re very happy with this user-friendly,

client friendly facility,” Borsato said.

“The staff are happier and more cohesive and therefore more effective.”

Canfor announcessecond quarter results

Canfor Corporation reported net income attributable to shareholders (“shareholder net income”) of $110.3 million, or $0.77 per share, for the second quarter of 2013, compared to $61.9 million, or $0.43 per share, for the first quarter of 2013 and $2.6 million, or $0.02 per share, for the second quarter of 2012.

For the six months ended by June 30, 2013, the company’s shareholder net income was $172.2 million, or $1.21 per share, compared to a shareholder net loss of $15.4 million, or $0.11 per share, reported for the first half of 2012.

The shareholder net income for the second quarter of 2013 included various items affecting comparability with prior periods, which had an overall net positive impact on the company’s results of $22.6 million, or $0.16 per share.

After adjusting for such items, the company’s adjusted shareholder net income for the second quarter of 2013 was $87.7 million, or $0.61 per share, up $17.4 million, or $0.12 per share, from an adjusted shareholder net income of $70.3 million, or $0.49 per share, for the first quarter of 2013. Adjusted shareholder net income for the second quarter of 2012 was $9.2 million, or $0.07 per share.

The company reported operating income of $128.2 million for the second quarter of 2013, compared to operating income of $100 million for the first quarter.

The positive variance reflected improved results in the lumber segment mostly as a result of increased shipments and, to a lesser extent, lower manufacturing costs.

After reaching an eight-year high in late March 2013, North American lumber prices corrected sharply through the second quarter of 2013, mostly due to supply-related factors, including higher operating rates and improved railcar availability.

Unseasonably wet weather in parts of the U.S. tempered residential construction activity in the second quarter and this was reflected in U.S. housing starts, down nine per cent from the first quarter of 2013, averaging 872,000 units

SAAR (seasonally adjusted annual rate). Contributing to the decline in U.S. housing starts was also a sharp drop in the more volatile multi-family starts, down 27 per cent in June.

Underlying housing demand remains strong with many housing market indicators continuing to show positive trends.

In Canada, steady lumber consumption in the quarter resulted from Canadian housing starts moving up six per cent from the first quarter of 2013 to 186,000 units SAAR. Offshore demand for Canfor’s lumber remained solid, consistent with the previous quarter.

The average North American benchmark Western Spruce/Pine/Fir (“SPF”) 2x4 #2&Btr price was US$335 per Mfbm, down US$56, or 14 per cent.

Despite this and similar declines in other narrow dimension grades, Canfor’s average sales realizations were largely unchanged from the previous quarter.

This reflected more stable offshore pricing, as well as a higher proportion of North American shipments earlier in the quarter before a sharp price correction through May and June.

Western SPF lumber sales realizations were also positively impacted by a stronger US dollar, which moved up one cent from the previous quarter. Prices for narrow Southern Yellow Pine (“SYP”) lumber products experienced a similar decline from the previous quarter, with the benchmark SYP 2x4 #2 average price declining US$60, or 13 per cent, to US$392 per Mfbm, reversing most of the gain seen in the previous quarter.

Lumber shipments increased 12 per cent, or 133 million board feet, from the previous quarter, reflecting higher production as well as the impact of improved railcar

availability following a shortage experienced in the previous quarter.

Lumber production, at just over 1.2 billion board feet, was up five per cent, or 55 million board feet, from the previous quarter, reflecting recently completed capital upgrades as well as more operating days and additional overtime shifts in the current quarter. Lumber unit manufacturing costs showed a modest decrease compared to the previous quarter, reflecting higher production and seasonally lower unit conversion costs. Log costs remained relatively stable, ahead of an increase in stumpage anticipated in the third quarter of 2013.

Global softwood pulp markets were slightly improved through the second quarter of 2013, principally the result of reductions in supply due to spring maintenance downtime, while shipments were steady in the quarter.

Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft (“NBSK”) pulp list prices experienced moderate increases with the average list price to North America up US$40, or four per cent, to US$937 per tonne.

List prices to China and Europe saw slightly lower gains through the quarter, with pricing to China up US$22 per tonne and pricing to Europe up US$25 per tonne from the first quarter of 2013. Average pulp sales realizations were up moderately reflecting the improved prices and, to a lesser extent, the stronger US dollar.

The company’s pulp shipments were broadly in line with the previous quarter, with the impact of scheduled maintenance outages at the company’s Northwood and Intercontinental pulp mills offset by a drawdown of inventories.

The impact on costs of the scheduled maintenance outages as well as higher fibre costs, contributed to higher unit manufacturing costs in the current quarter.

The company continued to preserve its strong financial position, ending the quarter with cash and cash equivalents of $172 million, and a net debt to capitalization of three per cent.

“While North American prices showed a sharp correction after their highs earlier in the year, the second quarter’s lumber results were encouraging and reflect our continued commitment to being a top-quartile customer-focused supplier of lumber products in global markets.”

Canfor’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Don Kayne, said, commenting on the second quarter performance.

“Our pulp segment again delivered solid results in fairly challenging markets; the scheduled outages were completed on schedule and set us up well for the balance of the year.”

Looking forward, Kayne said that the Company’s Elko and Mackenzie sawmill upgrades remain on target for completion during the third quarter, and will allow the company to continue to capitalize on the improving housing market.

He added that the recent flooding in the south-east area of British Columbia would adversely impact the profile and costs of logs harvested in this region in the third quarter.

The previously announced phased purchase agreement with Scotch & Gulf Lumber, LLC is projected to close in August 2013.

North American softwood

lumber demand is forecast to continue to increase over the balance of 2013 as the U.S. housing recovery progresses, driving higher consumption in both the new home and the repair and remodeling sectors. Reflecting the decline in North American pricing, export taxes on U.S. shipments will be 10 per cent in August, with potential for export taxes in September as well.

Offshore shipments are projected to remain strong, reflecting solid construction activity forecast over the balance of the year. The Canadian market is anticipated to show modest gains over the same period. NBSK pulp markets are projected to soften during the seasonally slower third quarter and there exists a risk of price weakness from new hardwood pulp capacity scheduled to come online in the second half of the year.

The Chilliwack Rodeo celebrated a quarter of a century last weekend and a handful of Quesnel riders were celebrating right along with them.

Quesnel's Steve Lloydtook first in tie down roping, beating Jake Herman of Chase, who finished second, and Joel Isnardy of Cache Creek, who finished third.

Hohmann also took home a third in saddle bronc. Kaila Mussel of Chilliwack and Cole Scott of Kamloops tied for first in the event.

Taylor Cherry of Quesnel celebrated a win in junior barrel racing, with Lane Wills of Quesnel finishing third. Savona's Tosha Seitz finished between the two Quesnel girls in second.

of Quesnel took third. Colton Manuel of 150 Mile finished just ahead of him in second. Meritt's Mike Gill took first.

Celebrating a quarter century on the back of a horse

Quesnel Tree Removal Squeeze put the squeeze on the competition at the slo-pitch nationals in Kelowna at the beginning of the month, taking bronze in the Women’s C Division.

It was the team’s first swing at provincials, which left the impressive results a pleasant surprise.

“Going into the tournament, we didn’t know what we were up against, so I was going to be happy winning just one game,” head coach Lorne Lilley said.

In fact, the team surpassed his expectations in the first two games.

Lilley attributed much of the success of the team to a very strong defense, saying the shortstop and fielders played an amazing game.

While the fielders were snatching runs out from under opposing teams, the teams uneven offence was the sticking point.

“Our batting was hit or miss,” Lilley said.

In their first game, the Squeeze squeezed by Kelowna’s Better Than Nature in their first game, 10-9.

They then went on to beat Abbortsford’s No Excuses with a commanding 6-1 final score.

The two wins finished the first day of the tournament on a high note.

The next day, the women hit a hard case in the Dirty Jersey River Cats. The River Cats played a strong offence and beat the Squeeze 8-1.

After the difficult defeat at the hands of The River Cats, the Squeeze played Hokum, a team of Saskatoon. The game stayed close for the duration, forcing the game into extra innings. Hokum made the best use of the extra innings edging ahead of the Squeeze by two points and taking the win.

The second day marked the end of round robin play, with the playoffs starting the next day.

The Quesnel women started off the

playoffs against the No Eyed Deers, who Lilley called an all star team as they pulled the best players from around the Lower Mainland: Mission, Langley and Surrey.

The No Eyed Deers proved difficult, taking the game well in hand and beating Quesnel 9-2.

The Squeeze shook off the loss, going into their next game against Hokum, who had given them some trouble in the round robin. This time, however, Quesnel found their hitting and sank the Saskatoon team, 13-0, which ended their first day of the playoffs.

The Dirty Jersey River Cats started off the Squeeze’s day again, but this time the Squeeze didn’t let the River Cats run. They pumped up their already strong defense allowing Kamloops only two runs off of their 12 hits to take the game 5-2.

Quesnel next faced another team that had given them trouble the day before:

the No Eyed Deers. Once again, the Squeeze reversed the previous result, knocking down the Lower Mainland team 7-5.

With the sun beating down and the Quesnel women working hard to beat teams who had beaten them, they were getting tired.

“We ran out of gas,” Lilley said.And for the third time that day,

the results of previous games were flipped, only this time in favour of the opposition, with No Excuses taking the win 13-4.

The loss pushed them to third overall, a position which the team was happy with.

The Fembots were also in Kelowna for the tournament and took eleventh in the women’s D division.

The Squeeze, and other slo-pitch teams now have their eyes on provincials, which feed into nationals next summer.

And Lilley knows what they need to get the wins in provincials.

“We’re definitely going to be doing a lot of hitting practice for the next two weeks,” Lilley said.

WILLIAMS LAKE SALE - THURSDAY JUNE 20THToday in Williams Lake saw excellent volume with just under 450 head! Well over 250 butcher cows and bulls showed a steady sale. The Gang Ranch today set a pace as they showcased a load of butcher cows, the young pen of 24 head of heiferettes 1024 lbs powered to 107.00 with 885 lb at 119.00. The mature butcher cows reached 71.75. 1898 lb bulls hit 86.00. The Char Springs Ranch 2010 lb butcher bulls marked 83.75. Gordon & Linda Watts 2125 lb butcher bulls topped 85.00. Ken & Ginger Cameron topped our bull trade at 2045 lbs hitting 87.50 and 2020 lb bulls at 88.00. The Harris Ranch 1335 butcher cows hit 74.00. George Dinwoody also had 1602 lb butcher cows hit 74.50. Garrett Ranches liner load of kill cows weighed 1329 lb and brought 72.50. The 130 Mile Ranch also had 1330 lb butcher cows to 74.25.Walter & Susan Stidall of Prince George saw their load of fancy 750 lb red steers hit 134.00, the 825 lb steers sold to 130.25 a beautiful pen of their 760 lb heifers met 125.00 and the heavy heifers 809 lb traded to 115.00 their pen of 647 lb heifers traded to 127.00. Dave Wootten with 18 head of top quality 800 lb heifers they traded to 112.25. Vic & Sue Meyer had 683 lb steers top 143.00 and their 558 lb steers notched 162.00 with 612 lb heifers at 139.50. John & Denise Trueman had 675 lb steers top 144.50.

KAMLOOPS SALE - TUESDAY AUGUST 6TH Today was a nice mix of yearlings, butcher cows and bulls with just under 300 head on o� er. The Seven O Ranch put the � re to our butcher trade with 1100 lb cows at 81.00 and 1268 lb cows topping 81.00 also, the real big cows at 1855 lbs traded to 80.75. Harold & Becky Sample saw their 1500 lb cows trade to 79.75. Rex Duncan from Valemont had 1385 lb cows top 79.75 and their heavy cows 1702 lb traded to 80.00. Ed Roberson from Merritt had 1163 lb hieferette’s sell to 84.50. Bob & Donna Leavitt saw their 1433 lb butcher cows race to 82.25. Bill & Lil Cook saw their 1750 lb high yearling cows trade to 84.75. CSR Doug Fenton from Celista built a � re around our yearlings their 832 lb heifers notched 127.00. Next weekend, local skaters will get together to compete and Skate for Dave.

The memorial skate competition is scheduled for noon, Aug. 24 and is hopefully dubbed the first annual.

"We're hoping to give the skate community something to look forward to throughout the years," the sister of the competition’s namesake, Dave Patterson, and organizer of the event Sara Donald said.

Sign up for the event will be at the park, before the noon start time, with an entry fee of $5.

The afternoon will feature music courtesy of Matt Harrington of Zero Hour Music, a concession and prizes from the event sponsors, like Red Shreds, Ruins and 10L Skateboards.

If you've spent your hours of free time hanging around the skate park, you probably know of Patterson. He was a big part of the skateboarding community here in Quesnel years ago and it's a name you might still hear around those parts, his sister said.

Patterson recently committed suicide, leading his family back along their memories of him to celebrate the short time he had with them. In an effort to memorialize his passion for skating, the family wants to rename the skate park after Patterson.

The group organizing the competition has been in talks with MLA Coralee Oakes regarding a suicide prevention program and their effort to rename the park after Patterson. Most of the money raised from the competition entry fees will go towards meeting that goal.

Rounds 14 and 15 were held in Williams Lake on Aug. 11 and 12 for the BCMA racers. A large turn out for the Quesnel racer's resulted in a lot of hardware coming home to Quesnel. Despite up to 35 degree weather, the racers put 100 per cent into this event after a month off. Race results were not posted yet on the CMRC/BCMA website however here's a review of some of the action.

It was great to have Scott Davis back on the track after several months off due to an knee injury. And, he was able to place in the top three in the over 40 class. Brian Watson also finished in the top three, along side Davis. Son, Jordy Davis, #109 raced in the intermediate class, taking a cash prize on Saturday. He raced hard on Sunday to cash in once again in the top 3, but unfortunately, due to mechanical issues, was not able to complete racing on Sunday. 

Jackson Nickolet, #671 once again held his top positions, taking home a second place trophy on Saturday and a first place trophy on Sunday.

Colton Shepherd, #82 was also back on the track this weekend, after a month off due to injury. He proved he still had it, taking a hole shot both days to start out his race and finishing right behind Nickolet with a third place on Saturday and finishing second over all on Sunday.

Eleven year old Spencer O'Flynn, who has been racing for four years on his 85cc Yamaha, also had no trouble staying ahead of his competitors on Saturday in the 7-11 class, taking his first place trophy home to Quesnel. 

Haiden and Austin Watson also raced hard, with Austin proudly taking home a first place trophy in the 85cc class age 12-16.

Beginner class racers Jordan Brears, Brett Lamarsh and Jared Lucas, also from Quesnel, raced successfully, taking home trophies. There were more racers from Quesnel that also endured the heat to have fun for the weekend. For final results check the CMRC BC Mainland results page. 

Racer's look forward to attending the second Annual BCMA Pro-Am Championships coming up at the Whispering Pines Race Track in Kamloops on Aug. 31 - Sept. 2 followed by rounds 16 and 17 back in Williams Lake on Sept. 14 – 15.

We Cariboo Pulp and Paper Company, 50 North Star road, PL Box 7500, Quesnel, BC, V2J 3J6, intend to submit this amendment application to the Director to amend Permit PE-1152, issued August 3, 1972 and last amended December 4, 2001 which authorizes the discharge o e uent from a pulp mill.

The land upon which the facility is situated and the discharge occurs in Lot B, District Lot 78, Plan 18650, located at/on/near 50 North Star Road, within the Quesnel Municipality.

The amendment requests that the following conditions be changed from section 1.2.1 states “the maximum authorized rate of discharge is 6300 m3/day” to the maximum rate of discharge is 31000 m3/day. The purpose of this change is to correct an error in the original 1972 permit hich neglected to ta e into account the bac ash o from the gravity l-ters. This turbidity of this o is cleaner than the river ater. n addition, there are a number of minor administrative amendments to be made.

Here & There

The most asked question we hear on our tour is

“How far do you ride in a day?” I suppose it’s a valid inquiry for conversation, if nothing else. But the truth is, cycle travel is much better when you don’t have a destination or immediate deadline. Pushing to make it somewhere can have an adverse effect on the day’s ride, particularly if you meet with “unforeseen circumstances” like headwinds or unexpected terrain.  

On this tour we have purposely built in additional days to allow us to go slowly when it feels right. Yes, we can cycle long distances in a day, but only if we really need to.

We try to measure our daily progress in hours not distance.

No more than six hours of pedaling is � ne, eight is OK.

You may have heard the term slow food – well, we’re calling this slow travel and we’ve met many other cyclists on the same setting.

Like the food, it just

tastes better. Many things in our society are fast, but they’re maybe not the best.

Slow travel affords you the time to stop and not only smell the roses, or clover, wolf willow, lupins, or the spruce trees in the morning stillness, but it gives your other senses a chance to live in the moment. As you are close to the earth at all times, Mother Nature is your partner as you roll along. She can dish out sights, sounds and even physical challenges that one would clearly miss in a car.

There’s nothing like being totally within the ever-changing landscape as you come upon new vistas around every corner. In a harried world, it truly is living in the moment.

Sometimes when a particularly beautiful spot appears, it’s easy to think, “I’d like to live here.” But try to remember... you are.

One of the physical challenges is the wind. A headwind can be surprisingly tough depending upon the grade, the temperature, altitude or your personal state.

The secret is to meet the challenge as if it were another hill to climb. One pedal at a time. Of course, the opposite can be said about a tailwind. You know you have one when everything goes silent and you’re effortlessly carried along like a ship on the sea.

Wildlife abounds. On a bicycle you have the opportunity to be close to all kinds of creatures. Near Trout Lake, Montana we rolled by a really big canine that was chowing down on a deer in the ditch, but it wasn’t a dog... it was a wolf! Big, black and thankfully not interested in us.  South of Ennis, Montana, we saw some strange looking deer. We realized they

weren’t deer at all – they were antelope, playing with some deer. Near Yellowstone National Park, we were camped next to the Madison River and we shared some time with ungainly beautiful pelicans � shing in the river. Yes, sometimes you must be careful if they’re bigger and faster but typically you get a good look, a chance to say hi and they disappear.

We’ve had a fantastic time cruising through Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, seeing geysers, bison, bubbling mud pots, azure pools of super heated water and breathtaking scenery. We’re happy to say the riding has been safe and drivers generally very courteous. We’re currently enjoying a layover at a Warmshowers host in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Next, we’ll be heading south on Hwy. 89 towards the towns of Smoot, Geneva, Paris and Logan Utah on our way to Salt Lake City.
