Dear Parents, There have been a number of reported cases of Hand, foot and mouth disease within the Qatar Academy Early Education Center. As a precaution we would like to advise you on the signs and symptoms associated with this contagious viral infection so you can be aware of how it looks and how to manage it. Thanks Primary School Nurses

HAND, FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE An infectious viral illness that can occur at any age, although it is most common in children under the age of 10. The disease is characterized by small blisters which contain clear fluid, that occur in the mouth, on the gums and on the side of the tongue.

Hand, foot and mouth disease usually begins with a sore throat and a mild fever that can last from 1-3 days.

Blisters form on the inside of the mouth usually on the cheek, gums and on the side of the tongue. Blisters later appear on the feet and on the hands and occasionally on the buttocks, and may persist for 7-10 days.

The incubation period between catching the virus and showing any symptoms is 3-5 days. A child with hand, foot and mouth disease remains infectious for about 7 days after the symptoms first appear.

It is spread through direct contact with bodily fluids such as mucous from the nose or throat from droplets released into the air by coughing and sneezing, and feces of infected people.

A person with hand, foot and mouth disease can pass on the virus to others during the acute stages of the illness. The virus can continue to be spread in the feces as long as several weeks after the onset of infection even after all symptoms have gone.

In most children hand, foot and mouth disease is a mild illness that gets better in a few days, without any treatment. Antibiotics will not be of any help in treating this as it is caused by a virus. Infants who develop oral blisters may stop nursing and become dehydrated

Persons with the virus should rest at home, and may be given medication and liquids to control fever and pain associated with the disease. Do not give aspirin or medications containing aspirin to children under sixteen years old.

The spread of hand, foot and mouth disease can be reduced by thorough hand washing following contact with nose and throat discharges and feces, and by covering coughs and sneezes.

Children with symptoms should not attend school until the fever is no longer present and the blisters have cleared.

If you observe any of the above signs and symptoms, please take your child to see a Doctor for diagnosis and instruction for required time to remain off school during the contagious period. A doctor’s clearance must be given before returning to school and given to the School Nurses.
