Enter inside to see Heathrow’s very own “Loo of the Year”

Balfour Beatty -

At Your Convenience

In terms of passenger footfalls HEATHROW AIRPORT is the second busiest airport in the world, the busiest airport in Europe, and sixth busiest airport in the world overall by total passenger traffic, including those with special requirements.

Heathrow Airport entered two toilets located in Terminal 2 in the 2016 Loo of the year Awards and their Changing Places toilets were judged to be the best of all the entries in the UK.

Q6 Matters

“Well done to the T2 team and all those who helped define our standards and our designs for this important passenger facility”.

Paul Cooper HAL Passenger Experience Programme Director

Peter Knowles, HAL PM, accepted the Loo of the Year award for our adult changing place in T2 at the end of November.

In an email to Phil Wilbraham and Helen Gamlin, HAL Director Paul Cooper said of Peter “as you'd expect, he is flushed with pride at this achievement”!

The brief to Balfour Beatty was to redevelop an area within T2, and make provisions for an Adult Changing Place facility consisting of combined toilet, shower and changing room for use by people that have complex and multiple disabilities and require the help of up to two assistants to use the toilet and special facilities before they fly. Provision of this bespoke unit is important to maintain Heathrow’s reputation as an inclusive airport with an understanding of the requirements of passengers with reduced mobility (PRM).

Allgood fixtures and fittings with ergonomic design

“Big Thanks to the whole BBG team involved with this project”! Drago Ralev, BB PM

Different options and locations for this project were priced over a two year period by four different estimators (Spencer, Mark, Howard and Malcolm). The project that achieved eventual gateway approval consisted of the installation of a new Changing Places facility within Level 10 Departures at T2B.

MEP services included:

New lighting, emergency lighting,

Small power, containment,

Domestic hot and cold water services for WC disabled wash hand basin and shower unit,

Associated dedicated drainage down to high level apron level and general supply and toilet extract ventilation.

Built in alarm call button to alert staff in the event of an emergency.

Creating the shell to specification

The image on the right is typical of each of the retail units that we handed back to our customer for concessionaires fit-out. Some of the new units were created in surplus space within the departures lounge concourse, whilst others were complete strip outs and refurbishments of existing vacated units, with extended bulkheads and pilasters. Balfour Beatty have provided the best facilities possible for the luxury retail market. We have enabled them to showcase their merchandise, to allow passengers to pass the time and buy their loved ones a gift before departing from the UK. 3

A Delighted Customer

“To date the combined safe hours of BBG and Retail Delivery on our T4 project is 130,000 man hours, with Retail Delivery and BBG safely sharing the same site to achieve programme improvements”.

“This is an excellent example of Delivery & Commercial working safely together, demonstrating excellent behaviours and delivering a project we can all be proud of”.

Operational Handover Day

Terminal 4 Fast Track Private Search

Small but perfectly formed

A small enclosed area was installed complete with a search bench and a panic button for the users safety and comfort.

At the back end of the Central Search Area (CSA) lane enhancements project in 2015, and in response to passenger feedback, Heathrow appointed Balfour Beatty on this project ……….. and we delivered.

Even as a small job, it still needed to go through all of the design, and bringing into use phases. Balfour Beatty gave the customer exactly what they needed, and it was received very well by the Security Teams.

The provision of a secluded area for Heathrow’s Fast Track Passengers in Terminal 4 to be discreetly searched as they pass through security.

IST

Steve Collinson will head up the IST works from January 2017. Steve will continue his good work on Safety, Capital Efficiencies, KPIs, Scorecards, Stakeholder Engagement, and much more.

Tarjinder Sachania will continue to support the IST functionality and administration of security passes.

James Bryant will continues in his IR and Quality role.

Gerry Lambe continues in the role of Logistics Manager. Reporting to Richard Piercy and working closely with Ken Hems, Gerry will continue to provide logistics support to the Volume works teams.

Louise Pope will transfer into the baggage team to support the administration of these complex works during January 2017.

From January 2017 Balfour Beatty will have two work stream leaders facing HAL. Richard Piercy on Volume Works and Ciaran Creamer on Baggage Works. HAL are familiar with this now well established double-headed approach. With close coordination between Richard and Ciaran, Heathrow will see the balance of Q6 executed efficiently and professionally.

Terminal 1 IDL Baggage

The Scope & Challenge

The scope was to create significant penetrations through the floor from the old T1 Departures Hall through to the Baggage Hall on the level below. The concrete floor sections that were removed needed to be removed from the area safely and without incident whilst working over an entirely live, operational baggage area.

A methodology had to be established for safely cutting the penetrations, whilst protecting both the workforce and the baggage system, keeping it operational and accessible for maintenance at all times. The Balfour Beatty team consulted with the suppliers, and jointly found a solution that was both safe and efficient, and did not impact either on the programme of work or the airport operation.

The T1 IDL Baggage Team have been nominated for a safety award in recognition of their success in delivering a significant package of high-risk works over a live operational area.

This could only have been achieved with a close working relationship between Balfour Beatty, our supply chain, and the BOA (Baggage Operational Assurance)

The location plan above indicates (in mauve) the areas in which the works were carried out

Terminal 1 IDL Baggage - Slab Penetrations

The procedure

Sealed plastic sheeting was provided inside the platform below. This stopped water and dust entering the operational area and protected the existing conveyors and other assets.

The existing pre-cast slabs were cut lengthways. This reduced the weight of the pre-cast slab section to be removed and minimised temporary supports, making the operation safer and improving efficiency.

A polystyrene infill was used on the platform to reduce any potential impact loads making this operation safer for the construction workforce and the baggage operators below.

Work progressed steadily and safely

The team proved the benefits of working together to deliver safely. There were no lost time incidents or injuries. Good communication and process improvements resulted in the works becoming more efficient (with extended day shifts instead of nights) whilst risks were eliminated through the design.

Being a Balfour Graduate By Steven Cheema - Site Manager

Being part of the programme has given me the opportunity to participate in the 20/20 Rotation Scheme which offers support in completing the APMP (project management) qualification

To become a chartered professional

Leadership training with Balfour Beatty and the Doves Nest Group

A wide range of work responsibilities

I joined Balfour Beatty as a sponsored student and moved onto working on the Heathrow Framework as a graduate. Currently I am working on Phase 2 of the Body Scanners Installation in Terminals 2 & 4.

Meet the estimators - our unsung heroes

All this couldn’t happen without the input of our colleagues in Estimating. Their task is neither easy or straightforward and seldom fully appreciated. Pricing of work in a live airport environment should not be underestimated (no pun intended !!) with lots of site specific issues (e.g. isolations) that aren’t found when pricing traditional building schemes.

Senior Estimator Howard Law said “I’d like to think that myself and my estimating colleagues are held in high regard. You have to be an optimist to be an estimator. As a key part of the BB team, try to remember us when the awards are being handed out.”

All of the projects that Balfour Beatty deliver at Heathrow are dependant upon the initial input of an estimator. These key members of our team are based at Langley, Starlight Point and The Wineglass, and can spend weeks or months preparing “Tenders” for Q6 schemes.

Our schemes, from a start on site, may take weeks, months, or years to reach completion. At the end, the project team can take pride of a job well done that will last many years.

Howard Law

Paul, Howard, Mark and Malcolm (pictured) primarily work on airport projects however, to give the whole team based at Langley the recognition they deserve, the other members are       Deborah Aderonmu (Graduate),  Spencer Belcher, Peter Bell, Richard Forrester, Pedro Lemos, Israr Mohammed, William Hartley (Graduate) & finally David Griffiths (Appren ce)

Mark Sykes (Left) & Malcolm Langston

My top 5 key points for other graduates:

Show enthusiasm

Stay motivated and keep busy

Don’t be afraid of voicing your ideas and asking questions

Increase your commercial awareness

Problem Solving – Find out facts before seeking help to then progress to the next step as it is good practice to illustrate your thought process.

Balfour Beatty does World Quality Day at Starlight Point - November 2016

Teaming up with the other Delivery Integrators on the Q6 Framework for Heathrow to promote World Quality Day We ran a number of competitions all based on Quality. What it stands for, why it is important and how we make sure we implement this on all our projects.

To manage the quality of work on site Balfour Beatty have adopted the use of the AutoDesk BIM360 Field iPad app. This is being used to control on site issues (such as outstanding works and technical queries). ‘Real time’ information can be used to manage the completion of installed works earlier on. This information, managed within each project, can be centralised and used to analyse and compare the performance of suppliers and consultants, comparing response times, number of issues and route causes of the issues. The resulting ‘issue list’ is automatically issued to suppliers and consultants for their action.

HRH The Duke of Edinburgh Charity Event Zip Wire Challenge

Every Year for one day only, Heathrow Airport Limited like to promote a Duke of Edinburgh charity event. This year it involved a Zip Wire Challenge at the new Terminal 2.

Balfour Beatty assisted by getting structural approval to connect the zip-wire to an external column on 5th floor and to a scaffold platform150m away at ground level.

The structural calculations were carried out, free of charge, by one of our Airport approved Structural Designers, Webb Yates Engineers.

Heathrow staff also went the extra mile and dressed appropriately for the occasion. Pictured below are two HAL Asset Assurance Managers, known for the day only as Buzz Light-year and Superman!

Winter 2016 / 2017 BBG Hoarding - Heathrow Airport

Balfour Beatty appreciate that the aesthetic quality of hoarding installations throughout Heathrow are of great importance and aim to present the best possible impression to passengers and to our customer.

 Hoarding / Temporary Screening System

12

We completed a review of current standards throughout all Heathrow Terminals.

Engaged with bespoke hoarding manufacturers to see what was available on the market.

Held discussions with HAL Chief Engineer regarding structural requirements of installations and suitability of materials.

Engaged with key stakeholders and Customer Operations Manager regarding aesthetic requirements.

Undertook a trial of a new hoarding product within Terminal 4.

What we achieved was a professional, consistent

hoarding installa on which not only complies with

structural requirements (BS6180:2011) but gives a

superior finish .

“Just wanted to take the time to share a success at T4. We have installed a new style of hoarding on the Victor Pier passenger conveyors which I think look really professional and are great for passenger experience. The materials are 100% recyclable and reduce waste and landfill which is really great for our environment. Thanks to the Balfour team for making this work” - Cathy Baxter (T4 Customer Operations Manager) Wow it looks better than the actual walls!!

“Now we have finally got to the end of the project to replace lift 9 I wanted to write and say what a pleasure it has been to work with you and the Balfour team on this crucial project. To think it was over 18 months ago we started talking about this!

Throughout the project you have always been prompt at responding to questions, phone calls, emails, and making yourself available at anytime to meet and discuss the project. Something that I have find hard whilst working on other projects across the airport with different contractors/PM’s. You’ve shown real flexibility to ensure the inconvenience to WDF has been kept to a minimum because of understanding the importance this business has at Heathrow. Look forward to working with you on future projects. Thanks again”.

“We were  given the green light regarding the use of the rolling gantry reference the glazing replacement project. Bureau Veritas and PTSG have carried out their checks and passed the gantries as fit for purpose.   This has generated significant savings and has minimised safety risks and reduced our disrup on over the check in     areas – a good win all round. It’s not o en we blow our own trumpet, however lots of credit to Paul Staples for ensuring these works have been                                 undertaken”.
