    EPISODE ONE: THE BURGLARY AND THE ESCAPE

    1. INT. KANE HOUSEHOLD - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

    FADE IN:

    It is quiet. All the human members of the Kane family haveretired to their bedrooms for the night, leavingWELLINGTON, their dog, alone downstairs to sleep. He is aGolden Retriever Labrador, just one year-old. He looksvery comfortable in his bed, dreaming deeply as he lies onhis side, legs stretched out.

    The handle of the back door begins to turn, the noisecausing Wellington to open his eyes. As the door isopened, the dog flips over, rolling onto his front and

    pricking his ears up.

    [NOTE: All of WELLINGTONs dialogue is heard as hissub-conscious, mostly with POV shots, the other characterscannot actually hear him.]

    WELLINGTONWhos that? Someone coming in? Ithought everyone was here...Someone coming in? Who is it?

    With every question the dogs head turns, ears flapping.As Wellington hears the INTRUDER enter and come into view,

    he starts wagging his tail at the sight of his guest.

    WELLINGTON(inhales sharply)

    Whos that?

    Wellington trots over to the trespasser to inspect. Hesniffs the intruders hands.

    WELLINGTONOoo your hands smell of chicken,I like that, Im going to lick

    you... I love you.

    Wellington licks the mans hands and wags his tailfrantically, shaking his hips as a result.

    INTRUDERTheres a good boy... Why cantthey all be like you eh?

    WELLINGTONI know, I know. I am so wonderfuland so cute.

    CONTINUED: 2.

    Wellington finishes licking the intruders hands and sitsdown in front of him expectantly, ears pinned back andstill wagging his tail.

    INTRUDERTell ya what, you be a good boy

    and go lay in your bed there fora bit and you can have a littlestroke, yeah?

    The intruder gestures over to Wellingtons bed, his eagersmile barely visible in the low light of the night. At theword "stroke", his face lights up.

    WELLINGTONStroke? Yes! Oh my goodnessplease stroke me, yes!

    The dog hurries over to his bed and lays downenthusiastically, turning to face his new friend as hedoes so. The burglar flits about the living room, placingthe DVD player, Playstation 3 console and iPod stereodock, among other things, into a black duffel bag. Hepicks up the Wii console and analyses it for a moment,before grunting and putting it back down on the TVcabinet. He throws the bag back over his shoulder.

    WELLINGTONDo you know me from the park? Ilike the park, I like runningaround it. It is fun.

    The burglar approaches Wellington in his bed, who layswaiting and wagging. The burglar ruffles the dogs fur andscratches behind his ears.

    WELLINGTONOh my goodness, youre hands areso good, thats so nice, I loveyou.

    INTRUDERCor, youre lovely aintcha?

    WELLINGTONYes I am. I am lovely.

    The burglar finishes his pampering, stands up and moves tothe back door. Wellingtons face stares after him, aghast.

    INTRUDERBye bye, little mate.

    WELLINGTONWhat? "Bye"? No...Dont leave!Whats going on?

    CONTINUED: 3.

    As the intruder leaves quietly through the back door,Wellington charges over to the front window, jumping upand placing his front paws on the windowsill to watch theman leave through the side entrance.

    WELLINGTON

    (whimpering)Where are you going? You cantleave me! Dont go!

    Wellington continues to watch the man out of the window ashe strolls down the street and out of sight.

    WELLINGTON(sighs)

    I love him, I hope I see him atthe park... Im tired.

    The dog steps down from the window clumsily and settlesback down in his bed again.

    INT. HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - MORNING

    Wellington is asleep in his bed, lying on his back, legsin the air, unashamedly agape. A shrill cry from LIZ, 39,the mother of the Kane household, cuts through the morningsongbirds chorus. She is accompanied by her husband andfather of the family, SIMON, 38.

    LIZWhat the bloody hell has

    happened?!

    The dog wakes with a start, flipping onto his front. Hisears are folded back as he searches for the source of thenoise with his eyes.

    WELLINGTONRoof?!

    Liz and Simon are standing by the door to the hallway, intheir nightgowns, staring aghast at the missing appliancesfrom the living room.

    LIZWheres the... And the... OhhChrist!

    Simon walks over the empty space where his hi-fi stereohad been.

    SIMONI dont believe it...

    Wellington looks around the room, wide-eyed, and realisesthat the man from the previous night must have hadsomething to do with this outburst. He slinks off to hide

    under the dinner table, tail between his legs. Lizinspects the other spaces where the familys possessionsused to be, before approaching Wellington. She kneels infront of him, holding his head in her hands.

    LIZ

    Did someone come in here lastnight? What happened?

    WELLINGTONI dont know anything... Keepstaring blankly at her... Givenothing away... Poker face...

    Liz releases him.

    WELLINGTONGive her the eyes...

    As Liz stands up, Wellingtons expression turns from thatof wide-eyed worry, to glassy-eyed cuteness as he bows hishead and looks up at her through his little eyelashes.

    LIZOh, Im sorry I shouted at youWelly.

    Liz and Simon bend over the dog and give him a lovingruffle on the head and a kiss on the nose. Wellingtonpurs gratefully. Liz stands back up, before picking upthe phone to call the police. Simon continues to pamper

    the Wellington.

    SIMONYou were probably just scared,werent you mate? Yeah...

    Wellington is looking very relaxed, his head resting inSimons hands as his big, flappy ears are played with.

    Roll titles.

    2. INT. KANE LIVING ROOM - AFTERNOON

    WELLINGTON is asleep on the large, leather, five-seater,corner sofa, curled up comfortably. His body is rising andsinking as he breathes slowly. The street outside isquiet, no cars, no people, while the afternoon sun streamsthrough the window, bathing the dog in a warm, goldenpatch of light.

    In the distance, a car engine can be heard coming down theroad. Wellingtons eyes open with a start, the rest of hisbody remaining perfectly still.

    WELLINGTONHuh?

    As the car draws closer, Wellington lifts his head, earspricked, to look out of the window.

    WELLINGTONWhat? Whats that?

    He jumps up, putting his front paws on the windowsill, andwatches as a white van drives past the house and parksdown the street a little, on the other side of the road.

    WELLINGTONOh, Its not Master...

    He continues to look out of the window hopefully, scanningthe street with his eyes. After a moment, a

    SCRUFFY-LOOKING MAN saunters past the house, walking alarge GERMAN SHEPHERD. It looks back through the glass atWellington, who growls deeply.

    GERMAN SHEPHERD(German accent)

    Mollycoddled little baby...

    The German Shepherd stops to glare at Wellington, but hisowner tugs at the lead, pulling him away. Wellingtonstail wags gently.

    WELLINGTON

    Im the protector of Mastershouse. I will protect everyone inMasters house...

    Suddenly, a CAT sprints out from under a car in thestreet. Wellingtons head snaps around to watch it.

    WELLINGTONCat!

    He watches the Cat sprint across the road and out of sightunder the white van on the other side of the street.

    WELLINGTONHate cats...

    A man steps out from the van, wearing a yellow,high-visibility jacket and holding a clipboard. He turnsaround to reveal that he is the INTRUDER from the nightbefore.

    WELLINGTONIs that-? Is it-?

    The man walks slowly down the street towards the house,pretending to write on the clipboard as he looks at thehouses around him.

    WELLINGTONIts him! Its him! Oh mygoodness...

    Wellingtons tail begins to wag energetically. The manapproaches the front door of the neighbours house andknocks cautiously. The dog shuffles along the windowsillfor a better look.

    WELLINGTONLet me say hello!

    The man waits for a few moments but receives no answer. Hewrites something down on his clipboard and hurries back tothe van.

    WELLINGTON(whimpering)

    Dont go, let me say hello! Dontgo!

    The van drives off and Wellington watches it desperatelyfor a few seconds.

    WELLINGTONTired, legs ache...

    Wellington gets down from the window and takes up hisposition on the sofa once again. He closes his eyespeacefully, sticking out his tongue several times andlicking his nose and lips.

    CONTINUED: 7.

    After a few moments, someone can be heard descending thestairs noisily. In one swift movement the dog reawakens,leaps off of the sofa and trots over to the living roomdoor.

    WELLINGTON

    (inhales sharply)Who is it?

    As the new person descends the final few stairs, his tailbegins to wag vigorously, swinging his hips as it does so.

    WELLINGTONWho?!

    The oldest Kane child, MICHAEL, 16, throws open the door.He is wearing pyjama bottoms, white t-shirt and a tiredexpression, sporting dark bags under his eyes. He speaks

    in a higher-pitched voice then normal, as if talking to ababy. Wellington looks excitedly around the room.

    MICHAELHello little man.

    WELLINGTONNeed something in my mouth, mustfind something... Ball!

    The dog rushes over to the base of the sofa, where atennis ball lies, and grabs it briskly before trottingback over to Michael.

    WELLINGTONIve got a ball... Dont want tobite you by accident... Veryexcited...

    The teenager kneels down to pamper Wellington, who circleshim slowly as he strokes the dogs back and ruffles hisears.

    WELLINGTONOoh, thats good...

    Michael stands up, giving Wellington a final few pats onthe head, before walking through the kitchen and into thedownstairs bathroom. Wellington stands very still, staringin wide-eyed incredulous-ness after him.

    WELLINGTONWhat are you doing?

    The dog remains in the same position, standing absolutelystill as he listens to Michael go to the toilet.

    CONTINUED: 8.

    WELLINGTONMore stroke? I want more.

    The toilet flushes and Michael emerges from the bathroom,yawning widely. Wellingtons tail and hips begin wag againas he trots over to him.

    Michael walks past the dog over to the mirror hanging onthe wall of the living room. Wellington follows, thetennis ball still in his mouth. He watches as Michaeladjusts his hair and analyses his adolescent beard.

    WELLINGTONLook at me...

    Wellington is at Michaels feet. He sits down, ball inmouth, tail still wagging. He looks up expectantly.

    WELLINGTON

    Look at how cute I am with theball?

    Michael continues to keep his attention on the mirror.Wellingtons tail slowly stops wagging as he sits, waitingfor some attention. When he doesnt get any, he paws atMichaels leg jerkily, struggling to keep his balance.Michael looks down at him, causing Wellingtons tail towag slightly.

    MICHAELAh, is that for me?

    He takes the dogs paw with his hand and moves it up anddown, simulating a handshake.

    WELLINGTONOk, thats enough.

    After a moment, the dog begins to wobble, unbalanced.

    WELLINGTONI need that back now.

    He begins hopping on his grounded paw to stay upright.

    WELLINGTON(grunting)

    Can I just?- Give it back-

    The dog finally loses balance and flops down onto hisside, dropping the ball.

    WELLINGTONThat was your fault!

    His paw is released from Michaels hand and he sticks it

    into the air, revealing his chest.

    WELLINGTONTummy rub?

    Michael speaks in the soppy voice again.

    MICHAEL

    Oh you silly boy, whatchoodoin?

    Michael pats the dog on his side, a bit too heavily.

    WELLINGTONOof!

    MICHAELNawww.

    He stands up and moves over to the sofa and flops down,

    putting his feet up, leaving Wellington still on his side,paw aloft, staring after him. Michael turns on the TV withthe remote and picks up a Wii controller from thewindowsill behind the sofa.

    Wellington flips into an upright position and stands backup, continuing to stare over at Michael, who is playingFIFA on the Wii, transfixed. The dog picks up his ballagain and trots over to the sofa, standing before Michael.He does not divert his gaze from the TV screen. The dogdrops the ball onto the sofa.

    WELLINGTON

    Look what I retrieved for you.

    Michael still doesnt pay any attention to him.

    WELLINGTONItch! Itch!

    The dog flops down onto his side and pulls his back legforward to scratch behind his ear vigorously. He standsback up to face Michael.

    WELLINGTON

    I want to play outside...

    Wellington saunters off towards the back door andscratches it loudly. Michael looks towards the dog, butquickly turns back to the TV. He hears another loudscratch at the back door and is distracted from his game,causing him to concede a goal. He bemoans the situationbefore reluctantly stomping into the kitchen withWellingtons tennis ball in his hand. He opens the doorand the dog canters out into the garden.

    EXT. KANE GARDEN - AFTERNOON

    WELLINGTONCome on, you throw Ill retrieve!

    Michael throws the tennis ball to the back of the gardenand Wellington hunts it down.

    WELLINGTONBall, ball, ball, ball, ball,ball!

    Michael shuts the door behind him and returns to the sofa.Wellington snatches the ball from the ground and turnsback to see that Michael has not followed. He whimpers ashis tail stops wagging. He drops his head to the groundand releases the tennis ball from his mouth, sniffing theground.

    WELLINGTONIll do some exploring...

    3. INT. KANE LIVING ROOM - AFTERNOON

    MICHAEL is still playing FIFA, getting more and moreannoyed with the game. As he lets out a particularly loudcry of anger, LIZ pulls up outside in her blue Peugeot207, with Michaels younger brother ZAK, 8, in thepassenger seat. At the sight of his mother returning home,Michael hastily switches off the console and rushesupstairs.

    EXT. KANE GARDEN - AFTERNOON

    WELLINGTON has found his rope toy and is swinging itaround with his mouth, growling at it playfully.

    WELLINGTONIve got you! Ive got you!

    He is jumping around clumsily as he plays, bashing intothe tree and fences.

    WELLINGTON

    Die, die, die!

    On one side of the garden there is a wooden panel fence,on the other is conifers with a wired fence through them.At the base of the wired fence are bricks, blocking theexposure to the bare earth from where Wellington has triedto escape from the garden on previous occasions.

    EXT. OUTSIDE KANE HOUSE - AFTERNOON

    Liz is unloading bags of shopping on the pavement whilstZak stands, playing on a PSP. He is dressed in school

    uniform and looks bigger than his age would suggest, inboth height and build.

    LIZZak, can you give me a hand?

    Zak looks up from his game reluctantly, rolling his eyes.Liz sees this.

    ZAKOkaaay.

    LIZOi, dont start copying yourbrother.

    He looks at the bags of shopping, sizing them up, beforegrabbing the multi-pack bag of crisps and running to standby the front door of the house. Liz removes the lastshopping bag from the boot and sees Zak standing by thefront door with the crisps.

    LIZ(under her breath)

    Thanks a bloody bunch.

    ZAKPardon?-

    LIZNothing, my little prince!

    Liz says the last word with a hint of aggressive sarcasm.She struggles with the bags to the front door, before

    dropping them on the step unceremoniously. As she does so,her keys also fall from her hands onto the floor.

    LIZSh-

    She looks at Zak, who raises his eyebrows.

    LIZSugar.

    EXT. KANE GARDEN - AFTERNOON

    Wellington is still occupying his time with the rope toy,charging about the garden with it. He crashes once moreinto the fence, breaking it this time, and creating asmall gap at the bottom of it. He is startled at the soundof the cracking wood, making him jump away.

    WELLINGTONRoof?!

    INT. KANE HOUSEHOLD - HALLWAY - AFTERNOON

    Liz and Zak enter through the front door, Zak still only

    carrying the crisps and his PSP while his mother stumblesin behind him.

    CONTINUED: 12.

    Michael descends the stairs, having changed his pyjamabottoms and t-shirt for jeans, polo and hoodie. Zak opensthe living room door and walks in.

    LIZHello dear, could you give me a

    hand please? Zaks clearlycarrying all that he can.

    Michael unhands some of the bags from his mother and takesthem into into the kitchen. She follows. They set themdown on the worktop and Liz begins to store the purchasesaway in the cupboards, the fridge and the freezer. Michaelstands in the doorway, hands in pockets, and watches. Thecrisps have been put down in the middle of the kitchenfloor.

    INT. KANE LIVING ROOM - AFTERNOON

    Zak has settled down on the sofa and is flicking throughchannels on the TV whilst simultaneously playing his PSP.

    EXT. KANE GARDEN - AFTERNOON

    Wellington is staring at the hole in the fence, with hislength of rope dangling from his mouth. He approaches itcautiously, giving the area a good sniff.

    WELLINGTON(inhales excitedly)

    New territory! I must

    investigate... Must retrieve...

    He begins to dig at the earth at the base of the gap,attempting to make it big enough for him to squeezethrough. His ears flap with each thrust.

    WELLINGTONDig, dig, dig, dig, dig!

    INT. KANE KITCHEN - AFTERNOON

    Liz is rushing around the kitchen, hastily throwing

    groceries into their respective homes.

    MICHAELA little more care, perhaps?

    LIZI need to get all this awayquickly before the police gethere...

    She is still flitting about.

    LIZ(continued)

    Of course it would be muchquicker with two pairs ofhands...?

    MICHAELYoull only moan about me puttingthings away in the wrong placeanyway, so theres no point in mehelping really, is there?

    Liz gives Michael a disapproving look.

    MICHAELYou cant give me theyou-know-what-I-mean look, whenreally, you know what I mean.

    Liz has resumed storing.

    LIZIm your mother I can look at youwhatever way I want.

    MICHAELHow mature...

    Michael looks blankly around the kitchen.

    MICHAEL

    (continued)Is there anything to eat?

    Liz scowls at him impatiently.

    INT. KANE LIVING ROOM - AFTERNOON

    Zak is watching Tom and Jerry cartoons on the television.

    EXT. KANE GARDEN - AFTERNOON

    Wellington has made good progress with the hole in the

    fence and is halfway through.

    WELLINGTONMust get through... Mustexplore... Must retrieve...

    He manages to finally squeeze through the gap and get intothe neighbours garden, his hind legs disappearing underthe wooden panel.

    INT. KANE KITCHEN - AFTERNOON

    CONTINUED: 14.

    Liz puts puts away the final few items of shopping andscrunches up all the shopping bags, putting them in theplastic bag holder attached to the side of one of thecupboards. She sighs with accomplishment.

    LIZ

    That was easy...

    She looks up at Michael, smiling. The smile is wiped fromher face however, when she speaks next.

    LIZ(continued)

    Hang on, wheres the dog?

    MICHAELI let him out in the gardenearlier.

    LIZOn his own?

    MICHAELWell yeah, I was on the W-...Work. I was doing college work,seen as I had the day off, had agood flow going so didnt wannadisrupt it.

    LIZYeah but you know what hes like-

    She rushes to the back door.

    LIZ(continued)

    Someones gotta stay with him...

    She opens up the back door and hurries out.

    LIZ(continued)

    Welly!

    EXT. KANE GARDEN - AFTERNOON

    Liz jogs out into the garden, scouring it for any sign ofthe dog. Michael walks outside from the kitchen, his handsstill in his pockets.

    LIZGreat, hes got out!

    She continues to check around the garden before turningback to Michael.

    LIZ(continued)

    Can you go upstairs and see ifyou can see him please!

    Michael rolls his eyes as he reluctantly turns backinside.

    INT. KANE LIVING ROOM - AFTERNOON

    Michael walks into the living room, where Zak is stillwatching cartoons and playing his PSP.

    MICHAELWellys escaped again.

    ZAKHow?

    MICHAELDunno.

    Michael opens up the door into the hallway and closes itbehind him. Zak can hear him ascending the stairs. He getsup and goes to the biscuit tin in the kitchen, liberatingit of the brand new pack of chocolate digestives within.He settles back down on the sofa and flicks through theSky+ Planner, eventually deciding to put on 28 Days Later.He smiles gleefully as he unwraps the top of the biscuitpacket.

    4. EXT. NEIGHBOURS GARDEN - AFTERNOON

    WELLINGTON is sniffing around the garden excitedly, hardlyspending enough time on any particular object to actuallyacknowledge it properly. He stops moving for a moment,sniffing the air.

    WELLINGTONOoo, whats that?... Smellsgood... Food!

    He catches the scent and walks over to a small vegetablepatch at the side of the long garden, continuing to sniffthe air as he goes.

    WELLINGTONIs it here...?

    He gives the upturned soil on top of the patch a thoroughinspection with his nose.

    WELLINGTONYes! Yes!... How do I get to it?

    He paws at the soil and sees that it is nice and soft.

    WELLINGTONOoo you taste of bread andchicken!

    Before she can grab his collar however, Wellington pullsback his head and disappears through the hole again.

    WELLINGTONMust go Master, I have toretrieve!

    Liz groans at her failure and stands up again, looking tothe upper windows of the house, one of which Michael isstanding in. She calls up to him.

    LIZCan you see where he is?!

    MICHAELYeah!

    LIZWhats he doing?!

    MICHAELDigging!...

    Liz holds her head in her hands.

    MICHAEL(continued)

    Their vegetable patch!

    LIZ(to herself)

    Oh, Christ.

    She looks up, aghast, before jogging towards the back gateof the house. Michael continues to nonchalantly watchWellington destroy the neighbours vegetable patch fromhis vantage point.

    INT. KANE LIVING ROOM - AFTERNOON

    ZAK is plowing through the pack of chocolate digestives,dropping crumbs all over the floor and sofa, while hecarries on watching the horror film. He stares intently aspeople are torn apart by the ravenous zombies on screen.

    Through the back window he sees his mother rushing out theback gate.

    EXT. OUTSIDE NEIGHBOURS HOUSE - AFTERNOON

    CONTINUED: 18.

    Liz hurries down the side of the house to get to thestreet, turning into next doors front gate and ringingthe doorbell. She uses her reflection in the glass of thefront door to check her hair and rearrange it slightly,while she waits.

    There is no answer, so she rings the bell again, but to noavail. Liz checks the windows to see if she can see anyoneinside the house. She stands for a moment, hands on hips,contemplating her options, before striding intently to theneighbours back gate. It is locked. She briefly looksover her shoulder to check that no one is watching, andbegins to climb over the gate in very unflatteringfashion.

    She jumps down from the top of the gate and manages toland on her feet, prompting a smile at her achievement.Her face turns stern again however when she hears

    Wellington still digging up the garden.

    LIZWelly!

    INT. LIZ & SIMONS BEDROOM - AFTERNOON

    Michael is still in the bedroom, watching Wellington inthe neighbours garden from the window. He sees his motherjump down from their back gate and hurry up the garden towhere the dog is digging. He doesnt seem all thatbothered by the situation. His hands are still pocketed.

    EXT. NEIGHBOURS GARDEN - AFTERNOON

    Wellington has made a big hole in the vegetable patch, buthis vigour has not let up. Liz enters the scene, inhalingsharply in horror as she sees the destruction he hascaused.

    LIZWellington Kane!

    He stops digging and spins around sharply to face Liz,slightly startled by her arrival. His tongue is hanging

    out as he pants and his tail is wagging gently. They stareat each other for a moment, waiting for the other to makethe first move.

    WELLINGTONMaster, look what Ive retrieved!I dug it up! I love digging...

    The dog begins to lower his head towards the hole he hasdug.

    LIZAh!

    WELLINGTONYes, Master.

    Liz raises her index finger as she exclaims, stopping hismovement. They stare at each other for another moment. Lizstarts to make a step towards Wellington, sparking him

    into action.

    WELLINGTONNo, its mine!

    He dives back into the hole he has dug, pulling out awhole potato in his mouth. Liz makes a grab for him butdoesnt get a good grip.

    WELLINGTONMy potato! I retrieved it!

    LIZNo Wellington, come back here!

    WELLINGTONMy food! My potato!

    EXT. OUTSIDE KANE HOUSE - AFTERNOON

    A police car pulls up outside the Kane house. The singleofficer from inside, steps out, checking a piece of paperin his hand. He looks up at the Kane house before throwingthe car door closed. He tucks his hat under his arm andstrides to the front door of the house, his boots making a

    deep thud on the concrete with every step. The name onhis stab vest reads, MCGOVERN.

    INT. LIZ & SIMONS BEDROOM - AFTERNOON

    Michael is watching Liz chase Wellington around theneighbours garden, chuckling as she is given therun-around by the dog. The doorbell rings, wiping thesmile from his face as he remembers who they areexpecting. He rushes from the room.

    INT. KANE LIVING ROOM - AFTERNOON

    Zak is still watching the horror film, wide-eyed, his lipsand cheeks covered in chocolate from the now almost-emptybiscuit pack. Someone can be heard descending the stairsnoisily.

    INT. KANE HALLWAY - AFTERNOON

    Michael opens the door nervously to the officer, whospeaks in a Scottish accent.

    MCGOVERN hears Wellingtons growls from the garden andapproaches the back gate tentatively. He tries to open itquietly, but realises that it is locked. The officer bowshis head to listen for any action in the garden on theother side.

    LIZ

    Get here now! Come here, Ive gotother things to do!

    McGovern reaches for the radio attached to his shoulder.

    PC MCGOVERN(into radio)

    Identified one female suspect onscene, yet to get a visual.Potentially more inside thehouse. Im moving in through therear entry of the property to

    stop her hurting the dog. Sendback-up, things could get ugly.Over.

    RADIO VOICECopy that.

    EXT. NEIGHBOURS GARDEN - AFTERNOON

    Liz launches herself at Wellington and finally manages toget a firm hand on his collar, halting him. He tries topull backwards.

    WELLINGTONNo, geddoff Master! I must takepotato back to my territory and Imust bury it and I will eat itlater.

    Liz hauls herself to her feet whilst maintaining her gripon the dogs collar. She heaves a sigh of relief andbegins pulling Wellington towards the gate. A PIGEONswoops down and lands on the garden fence.

    WELLINGTON

    Pigeon!

    Liz yanks on the collar, pulling the dog back towards thegate again. As she approaches it, PC McGovern kicks itopen, causing the dog to try and charge at him, pulling

    Liz to the floor again in the process.

    WELLINGTONWhos that?! Who is it?! Hello,hello, hello!

    LIZNo!- Stop it!-

    WELLINGTONI must greet him!

    She sees the officer standing before them. Wellington isdesperately sniffing the air trying to catch thepolicemans scent.

    LIZOh, thank you officer, could youjust come and grab him please?Im not quite strong enough.

    The policeman reaches for the baton holstered on his beltand brandishes it towards Liz.

    PC MCGOVERN

    Maam, let the dog go!

    WELLINGTONYes Master, let me go! Let me runfree! I must say hello!

    Liz is taken aback by the officers tone.

    LIZWhat? But it took so long tocatch him!

    WELLINGTONI want to say hello!

    McGovern advances very slowly and cautiously.

    PC MCGOVERNI dont care how long it tookmadam, just dont hurt the dog.

    Liz, still struggling to hold back the dog, looks bemused.

    LIZHurt him? What?

    ZAK has finished the packet of biscuits and is clutchinghis stomach with both hands, groaning. His face is smearedwith chocolate and his school jumper is covered in biscuitcrumbs. An especially gory image flashes on the screen,causing Zak to vomit over the sofa.

    7. INT. KANE LIVING ROOM - EVENING

    LIZ is scrubbing the area of the sofa that Zak was sickon. She looks exhausted. MICHAEL is sitting on anotherpart of the sofa watching the tele, uninterested in hismothers struggle next to him.

    WELLINGTON is lying in his bed, watching Liz clean up, hishead rested on the side of his bed for a better view.

    WELLINGTONWhats that smell?... Smells likechocolate... Chocolate! I likechocolate...

    His eyes light up, but his head remains resting on hisbed.

    INT. ZAKS BEDROOM - EVENING

    ZAK is milling about his room in his pyjamas, fiddlingwith toys lying about, while SIMON stands over him, tryingto usher him into bed.

    ZAKDad, do you think a zombieapocalypse might happen one day?

    SIMONA zombie apocalypse? Like, peoplesucking each others blood andeverything?

    ZAKNo, thats vampires.

    SIMONOh right, well whats a zombiethen?

    ZAKZombies are the ones that eat youalive, and chew on your bones,and drink your blood andeverything.

    SIMONSounds like a vampire to me.

    Liz is finishing up with the sofa.

    LIZOh, thatll do... Im sure thesmellll go... Eventually.

    She gives the rest of the sofa a quick wipe down, Michaelmechanically moving out of her way without liberating hiseyes from the screen. She gets to the part of the sofathat Wellington was lying on that afternoon, picking up afew of his golden-blonde hairs in her hand and turning tohim suspiciously.

    LIZHave you been on the sofa today,young man?

    He stares at her, trying to look as cute as possible.

    WELLINGTONUh oh, Masters not happy...

    Liz brandishes the hairs.

    WELLINGTONGive her the eyes...

    The dog gives Liz the same heart-melting face as he didthat morning.

    WELLINGTONLook at how cute I am...

    INT. ZAKs BEDROOM - EVENING

    Zak is getting more and more frustrated with his fatherslack of understanding on the subject of mythical

    creatures.

    ZAKNo, vampires cant fly, thatsjust Dracula when he changes intoa bat!

    SIMONIs Dracula not a vampire?

    ZAKWell, yes he is, but hes like a,

    a super vampire because he livesin a big castle.

    LIZNo. Naughty. Not up on the sofa,or youll be out outside.

    WELLINGTONOutside?!

    Wellingtons eyes light up in excitement once again. Simonenters the living room and exhales loudly. He sees Lizstanding by the sofa with a cloth.

    SIMONYou Ok? Need a hand?

    Liz raises an eyebrow at her husband dubiously.

    LIZDid you genuinely want to help,or are you only offering becauseyouve seen Im finished?

    SIMON(in thought)

    Yes...

    Wellingtons ears prick. He lifts his head up and looksout towards the garden, sniffing the air.

    WELLINGTONWhats that?

    A moments more sniffing passes.

    WELLINGTONThere it is... Oh my goodness,thats good, I like it...

    He barks a few times in the direction of the garden,getting swiftly to his feet and taking a few stepsforward. He turns back towards Liz and Simon expectantly.

    WELLINGTONMasters, come investigate!Theres something very good outthere! I need to retrieve it!

    The Intruder drops his duffel bag and drumstick.

    WELLINGTONOoo, chicken! I love chicken! Iwant to eat chicken!

    The dog gnaws on the leg of chicken before licking thenmans face, clambering all over him, not allowing him toget back to his feet.

    WELLINGTONYou brought me chicken, I loveyou! Come play ball with me!

    Liz and Simon observe the shady man on the floor, movingtheir eyes onto the half-open black bag full ofappliances.
