SEPTEMBER DAY GROUP REPORT Wow! After so many months we are back.
I had a few apologies and hope to see you back next month.
We had a great turnout and I am sure everyone was happy to get out for the afternoon.
Roger Herraman was our Guest Speaker and he showed us some of his beautiful orchids.
Roger answered many questions from our members, and I am sure they enjoyed the
presentation.
I also asked Roger to pick his favourite plant out from all the orchids on the appreciation
table, which enabled Wendy and Rayne to enjoy the afternoon.
Also, a huge thankyou to Bruce for manning the front door to save the members from
having to ring to get in.
I mentioned the Spring Show on Saturday 19th September 2020 and the upcoming Sarc
Dinner on 7th November 2020.
The next night meeting will be on 1st October 2020 and the Guest Speaker will be in the
bulletin.
The next Day Meeting is on 9th October 2020 and our Guest Speaker will be Paul
Dipuglia from Neutrog. Paul will be speaking about the products and also the exciting
changes happening at Neutrog. You will be able to order products on the day and they
will be available for pick up from Wendy Lodge’s residence. Eftpos facilities will be
available on the day.
I closed the meeting inviting the members to enjoy afternoon tea and a chat but to keep
social distancing.
A big thankyou to Trevor Camac for setting up the computer and projector.
Thank you to everyone for helping to clean up. With only a certain time allowed in the
hall it is very difficult to deal with it all.

OCTOBER NIGHT MEETING GUEST SPEAKER
Treasurer Graham has been growing the Laeliinae genus for many years; in particular a
number of forms of the species Laelia anceps. He has been very successful in showing
this species, culmination in winning Grand Champion at the 2015 Winter Show. Come
along and hear what he has to say on growing and showing, in his opinion, this easy to
grow genus.
OCTOBER DAY GROUP GUEST SPEAKER
Our next meeting will be held at the Enfield Community Centre, 540 Regency Road,
Enfield on Friday 9th of October from 2.00pm to 4.00pm. Our Guest Speaker will be
Paul Dipuglia from Neutrog. We always look forward to hearing from Neutrog giving
us information on their wonderful products together with information on any new

NEUTROG ORDER
Members, the club will be placing another order with Neutrog in October for their
fertilizers. This is a great chance to purchase fertilizer at prices too good to be missed.
Remember though; this offer is for MEMBERS, and MEMBERS ONLY, so if family
or friends would like products at the incredible prices on offer, they need to become a
member of the club to be eligible. Just consider this; the savings made by purchasing
just one of the products at the prices on offer could more than pay for the annual
membership of the club. However, these incredible prices MUST NOT be disclosed or
published publicly.
PLEASE NOTE: There are new product called Sudden Impact for Roses Fines (I
assume it is a crumble form of Sudden Impact for Roses). Please
MAKE SURE you use the current order form when ordering; not
any previous order form you may have.
For those members who receive their Bulletin by mail you will find an order form
included with your October magazine so, if you wish to place an order use this form.
For those who receive their Bulletin via email, you will receive an email message like
the one notifying you that the Bulletin is available to be viewed and/or printed. This
email will have a link to the Neutrog order form.
If you are intending to order any of the Neutrog products and are unable to attend either
the October night or Day Group meetings, you can mail the order form along with your
payment to the club’s GPO Box number (details are on the bottom of the order form) by
close of business on Friday the 16th of October. If paying by Direct Debit (details are
also on the bottom of the order form); make sure you enter your name and the words
“Neutrog Order” when making this payment. You will also need to post the order form
to the club’s GPO Post Box or email it to [email protected]; along with the fact you
have paid by Direct Debit so that I can check the bank statement for details.
Orders will be available for collection from Wendy Lodge’s residence at 4 Narelle
Court, Hope Valley on Saturday the 31st of October. You are reminded that it is YOUR
RESPONSIBILITY to arrange your order collection; NOT the club’s. You need to
contact Wendy on 8264 5874 to BOOK A TIME to collect your order. You should
record Wendy’s phone number, address and the collection date before you either hand
in or post your order form.

WINTER SHOW REPORT
Our Club’s first meeting back held on Thursday night the 6 th August, turned into the
Club’s Winter Show. There were approximately 60 – 65 plants presented to be judged,
the majority in Open Division, and the rest in First, Second and OIS.
After careful deliberation, Cymbidium Coraki Glowing ‘Kentlyn’ was chosen as Grand
Champion of the show, after already being chosen Champion Cymbidium, which then
meant it was Champion of Open Division. The plant had 3 tall upright inflorescences
of clean yellow flowers, all displayed beautifully, and was grown by John Moon.
Other division Champions were Pterostylus curta grown by Graham Hein in First,
Cymbidium Careless Heart ‘Cutie Pie” grown by Sharon Farley in Second, and lastly
Cymbidium Khan Flame ‘Cab Sav’ belonging to Woodville High School.
Congratulations to all those members whose plants won a first prize, then those that
went on to get a best and were eventually chosen as Champions. It was good to finally
have a meeting/show to be judged again. My thanks also to those Judges who
participated.

FROM THE REGISTRAR FOR SEPTEMBER
Plant of Open Division and Registrar’s Choice
The plant chosen was Serapias lingua grown by Les Nesbit. He presented a 200ml. pot
completely full of upright inflorescences with a beautiful colony of this species from the
Meditteranean countries. The flowers all had white/cream dorsal sepals, very small
petals and ventral sepals with a very striking pink labellum, often having 2, 3 or 4
flowers per inflorescence which were contrasted against the bright green leaves below.
Les informs us that he grows these terrestrial plants cool, being kept dry in summer and
only receiving rain during winter. He uses blood and bone when repotting in Summer
then changing to Cym. liquid food in winter. The very heavy mix he uses comprises of
soil, sand and native potting mix. These plants make large tubers and multiply easily.
Plant of First Division
Dendrobium Border Surprise was bought in by Phil
and Anne Steer, who joined our club over the
Christmas holidays and had plants in competition for
the first time. Growing in a 100ml pot, absolutely
jammed full of canes, with many displaying 1, 2 or 3
short inflorescences with at least 8 –10 flowers on
each, all two-tone pink, with quite dark pink/purple
tips. All the leaves were clean and a healthy green.
Phil wrote that his plant is grown cool, growing on a
northern aspect, close to the shade cloth with the
foliage above the fence line. It is growing in
completely decomposed medium bark (so will need
repotting soon), and is watered weekly in
winter/autumn, increasing as the weather gets
warmer in summer. Phil likes to use Macrocote slow
release alternating with ½ strength Thrive and then
Power Feed over alternate months. Well Done Phil
and Anne. We hope you will be happy at OCSA.
October 2020 OCSA 11
Plant of Second Division
Grower Sharon Farley (who helps with the computer
on meeting nights) bought in a very unusual
coloured Cymbidium Wallamurra ‘Ninja’. It is one
of the feathered variety of newer cymbidiums, with
the background being white underneath, then lightly
brushed over with pale pink, then finally having a
darker maroon brushed over that again, giving it a
feathered look. It had a contrasting white labellum
covered with red/maroon markings and striations,
with a central keel of bright yellow spreading over
the middle of the lip. Quite outstanding, Sharon.
Sharon grows her beautiful cymbidium cool in a
shade house with 50% shade cloth, she waters using
only rainwater, then fertilizers using a selection of
Neutrog liquid fertilizers, Seamungus, Strike Back
for Orchids, and GoGo Juice. She uses a mix of Pine
bark, perlite, clay balls and shell grit.
Plant of Orchids in Schools Division
The Plant of Cymbidium (President Gorbachev x
Khan Fury) was picked because it had a tall upright
inflorescence displaying 8 clean yellow/orange
flowers, with lovely shape and substance, with a
contrasting white labellum that had dark maroon
markings on the edge of the labellum. The flowers
were all held above the foliage and were displayed
all around the inflorescence.
Willunga High School owns the plant, and their
mentor, Trevor Garard wrote that the students grow
the plant cool using small bark, fertilizing with
Neutrog Strike Back for Orchids, and the plant is
kept under 50% shade cloth most of the year, going
up to 75% shade cloth during the summer. Well
done to the students.

Stenoglottis
Stenoglottis (sten-oh-glott-is). From the Greek stenos
(narrow) glotta (tounge). A genus of only three species [now
eight]. Sngl. longifolia and Sngl. fimbriata are readily
available but Sngl. zambesiaca is very rare.
This orchid must be one of the most popular and sought after
orchids when in flower. It is an easily grown Terrestrial
orchid originating from South Africa. Having fleshy-like
tuber roots, I consider the Stenoglottis to be a heavy feeder,
and responds well to slow release fertiliser such as Neutrog.
Although I have seen these plants growing well in pine bark,
I grow mine in Nu-Earth general potting mix in a 20cm squat
pot.
Being a fine mix (and I have problems with slaters) I put some shade cloth in the bottom
of the pot. By turning the pot you wish to use upside down over the mesh, scribe around
with a pencil, cut the ring and you will find that when this is put inside the pot it will be
the right size to cover the weep holes. This will stop the slaters from scratching the mix
out.
The Stenoglottis is a progressive flowerer and, as the first flowers to open fade the flower
spike elongates, and you will have a display of flowers for some weeks.
If it is necessary to divide the plant, you may need to sever the growth to separate them.
Any smaller growths on the outside of the plant may be removed. These can be potted
up in small pots until they grow on.
Early in July reduce the watering, and by the end of July the flower spikes have past
their best. You can cut them off, strip the dead flowers and put the tops in a vase. I
believe the flowers in water are long lasting.
The plant will have a short dormant period. The very soft leaves will brown and can be
removed. Only water to stop the tubers dehydrating. When a new growth starts in the
spring, then pot on or divide.
Through the hot summer period grow under the Cymbidium leaves and white shade
cloth. Water each day and fertilise weekly. Late summer, when the flower spikes appear,
I bring them out from under the Cymbidium leaves and the spikes grow straight up for
the light.
I hope you have as much enjoyment growing this very rewarding plant as I do.

Equitant Oncidiums
When endeavouring to cultivate any genus of orchids I feel that it is necessary to put
some effort towards researching the genus and species to determine if you have the
conditions to grow the orchids selected. In the case od Equitant Oncidiums, Cattleya
conditions will suit but then some fine tuning may be required to get the optimum from
these little beauties.
Equitant refers to the leaves of these plants, the leaves being distichous (arranged in two
ranks or rows), short, thick, channelled and co-duplicate (overlapping). The species of
this genus are mainly found in the Caribbean Islands with a few others ranging from
Mexico through the West Indies, Guatemala to El Salvador.
The main species are O. citrinum and variegatum from Cuba the last also is sometimes
called variegata. Also O. triquetrum from Jamaica and O. tetrapetalum, quiahense,
urophyllum all from the West Indies. There is also a natural hybrid between O. pusillum
and Psygmorchis pumelo which becomes Psygmorchis glossomystax, found in
Venezuela. All these species have been extensively used in hybridising.
The flowers which develop from long spikes compared to the size of the plants are
combinations of lavender, white, yellow, red and purple with 4 to 10 flowers averaging
25mm in size. All open almost simultaneously, some with few or many branching spikes
which present a spectacle for such a small plant. There are may hybrids of these available
and some intergeneric crosses have been made with Rodrigezia to widen the range of
colours so we also have Rodricidium available in the range.
These are very rewarding plants to grow and flower, we grow ours in small terracotta
pots 59 & 60mm hanging on the wall of the hot house about half way between the floor
and the roof where they receive plenty of air movement and good light conditions from
the alsonite roof with 50% shade cloth over most of the year. The shade cloth is removed
May and the end of July thus increasing the light during winter.
In their natural habitat these plants grow in temperatures of 28-30ºC at night to 35ºC
plus during the day with very frequent storm activity with high rainfall and strong
drying winds in between so in our hot house the minimum temperature would be about
15-18ºC in winter to 20-25ºC in summer and the maximum temperature at any time
would be 30-32ºC. There is constant air movement provided from the fan which operates
round the clock and additional cooling air from the evaporative air conditioner during
the summer months, so in between watering the plants are dried out. The humidity
controlled by a humidifier never falls below 60%.
Our mix is 3 parts seedling bark, 2 parts of small charcoal, 1 part of small gravel, 1part
of fine isolite and a heaped teaspoon of canunda shell sprinkled over the top of the pot.
In the summer these plants are watered every day and tapered off to twice weekly during
winter. We fertilize with any of the normal available fertilisers at half strength with high
nitrogen during the active growth of the new leads and change to low nitrogen “blossom
booster” just before maturity to harden the new growth and then none until flowering
between September to November. Just after flowering they start to grow again. We leave
October 2020 OCSA 17
these plants in the pots up to 3 years or more as they seem to like to be root bound in an
under potted situation. The roots freely attach themselves to the terracotta pot, so as not
to damage these roots too often by repotting they are best left for some years without
disturbing them. If the mix you use is not free draining and long lasting, then you will
almost surely lose them to rot. Other than this they don’t seem to attract other pests and
diseases.
Most major nurseries in Queensland have these little beauties in stock both as hybrids
and mericlones and are relatively cheap to purchase so get a few and try them.

Species Orchid
Dendrobium atroviolaceum
Dendrobium atroviolaceum is an epiphyte
that grows mainly on Misina and Rossel
Islands of Papua New Guinea. It was first
described by R. A. Rolfe in April 1890
from a plant imported from Eastern New
Guinea. Since then, it has become a
popular species in many orchid collections
and has been used quite a lot in hybridising.
In its natural habitat, it grows on rain forest
trees ranging from 200-800 metres, in
about 50% shade, always in areas where there is consistently good air movement. The
climatic conditions that Dendrobium atroviolaceum likes is a warm, humid atmosphere.
In cultivation it grows in a cold-intermediate glasshouse with plenty of air movement
and a minimum temperature of 10ºC in a free draining medium of medium-coarse pine
bark (10-15mm).
Dendrobium atroviolaceum flowers October to February in South Australian conditions.
In Papua New Guinea, it flowers most of the year. The plant has club-shaped
pseudobulbs, basically narrow and about 20cm tall with 2-4 leathery dark green leaves
at the top. The pseudobulbs flower over and over, producing paired flowers on short
stems.
The erect racemes carry up to 20 long lasting flowers which are about 5-6cms across,
fragrant and heavy textured. The flowers are creamy yellow heavily marked with violet
spots, shading to green at the base.
The sepals are broad at the base with rolled back edges and sharply pointed tips. Densely

spotted on the outside with purple spots which show through on the front surface. The
ovary is stippled with purple.
The lip has round erect side lobes striped with brilliant violet and a boat shaped outer
lobe which is less brightly striped, green on the outside. It is a difficult orchid to
photograph due to the nodding nature of the flowers, it needs to be seen to be
appreciated. The flowers are viewed better if the plant is hung up higher (above eye-
level). Dendrobium atroviolaceum has proven to be a good parent for hybrids, some of
which include the popular Den. New Guinea (when crossed with Den. macrophyllum)
and Den. Nellie Slade (with Den. forbesii).
