AcknowledgementWe would like to acknowledge the efforts of everybody involved in making this project as it is. Their efforts, knowledge and patience has been crucial for this assignment. it might be impossible to successfully complete this project without them.

We would like to thank Mr. Shankar, our psychology lecturer, for all the lecture has been imparted and the guidance given.Needless to say , without him this project would not have started in the first place, and without him, we would frighteningly in the dark about the human behaviors.

We would also like to thank our groupmates, the actors, the editors ans cameraman, for their part in this project. We thanks them for their sacrifices and commitments.

IntroductionIn this assignment, we are required to make a video which implemented at least 5 concepts from different chapters. Students may use the theories and concepts from the choice of topics taught and discussed in class. Several concepts are applied in the story and the story is demonstrated and acted by each of the group members and some of our friends.

Before we started to shoot the video, we have a discussion among our group members to create a new storyline and the script. The concepts that we have applied in this video are social influence, stereotype, confirmation bias, BIRGing, social loafing, optimistic bias and diffusion of responsibility.

In the video, all of the concepts are connected by the storyline and these concepts are interrelated to each other. For example, Stereotype is happened when people are classified based on characteristic. So does Confirmation Bias is paying attention only to the information that supports our belief and ignore information that conflict with our beliefs.

Throughout this project, we are able to understand more about the concepts as well as individual behaviour in social context.

Methodologya. Apparatus and Material Used

Camera was used to film the clip. Laptops like Asus and Macbook And smartphones like iphone 5, Samsung were used. These gadgets were used to enhance the quality of video and video-editing. Besides, other props like books, stationeries, bottle were also used in this video.

Discussion1. Storyline

Dean’s friends have a stereotype that doctor is a good occupation. Dean is influenced by his friends and think doctor is a good and nice occupation. Therefore , he decided to further his studies on medic field.

After discussing with his mother, his mother introduced Dr. Winter Teh and Dr. Wade to him for a consultation. So, Dean approach to Dr. Winter Teh to learn more about the medical field. Dr. Winter Teh gave him some advice on the bad side of being a doctor to give him some preparations to be a doctor.

After that, Dean also met Dr. Wade for his advice also. Unlike Dr. Winter Teh, Dr. Wade gave some motivation for Dean to give him the courage to face the future challenge.

Dean disregarded all the comments by Dr. Teh as he thought that she was trying to exaggerate the job of a doctor and agree with the comments by Dr. Wade. Finally, Dean decided to further his study in medicine field.

After Dean gets into medicine field, his mother was very proud of him and told her friends that her son is going to be a doctor soon.

Few months later, Dean felt that he does not really like medicine. So, he started to skip the group meeting while doing the group project. After many times of skipping the group meeting, Dean’s group mates were tiring of helping him to finish up his work. Dean was thinking that his friends will always help him to finish up his part of work.

At the end, they did not help Dean to finish up his work and Dean has failed his course.

2. Script

Scene 1Dean and his friends are discussing about what to study after their SPM.

Dean : Hi guys, do you have any good idea about what course to study after

our SPM?

Alan : I would like to study in medic as it would be great if I can explore more

about the secretes of human body.

Lee Ning : Me too, I feel that the most interesting part that I can learn in this course

is that we can do a lot of experiments and reveal the science tricks.

Dean : Really? Why all of u wanna study medicine?

Alan : It’s a very meaningful and nice job. Doctors help people who is

suffering .

Lee Ning : Yeah. Doctor also have good pay. Their salary are always above 3k.

Dean : Wow, sounds great. I think i will just follow you all and study

medicine. After taking this course we can become doctors together!

Lee Ning : Yeah! It would be fun if you can join us!

Alan : Yeah yeah!

Scene 2So, Dean go and find his mum who worked as a lecturer in Taylor’s University.

Dean : Mom, I would like to study in medicine.

Mum : Seriously? But it’s quite tough right?

Dean : Yeah. But all the doctor have good pay and flexible working hour.

Besides, all students taking medicine have stable and bright future.

Mum : Really? All of them?

Dean : Yeah. Of course! Every doctors have good pay!

Mum : I have a few friends who work as doctor . Yup can go and meet them and

ask for some advice.

Dean : Thanks mum!

Scene 3 So , Dean meet up with her mum’s friend Dr. Teh for some advice.

Dean : Nice to meet you, Dr. Teh, I am Dean.

Winter : Hi, Dean, what can I help you?

Dean : Dr. Teh, I would like to further my study in medical field, is it a good

choice for me?

Winter : Well, it depends. If you are really interested in this field then you may

go for it,

Dean : But I heard from my friends that being a doctor have a good pay and

free time, is it true?

Winter : Not at all. You can only obtain a good pay with your experiences after

working for at least 5 years as a practical doctor, and the salary for a

practical doctor is not really that high. Even you have become a doctor

with a Dr title, you won’t have free time as you must be on call in 24

hours and ready for any surgery.

Dean : Ok, thank you for your advice, Dr. Teh.

Then, Dean meet up with Dr. Wade . Dean approach to Dr. Wade.

Dean : Hi, Dr. Wade, can I ask you some questions about your occupation? I

want to study medicine also.

Dr .Wade : Yeah. No problem.

Dean : What do you think about your occupation?

Wade : I think It is a good field. Doctors have good pay .

Dean : Yeah, yeah! I agree. Thanks for your advice, see you again.

Wade : Bye.

Dean’s thought : “ Yeah I think doctors have good pay and it’s a nice job “

Scene 4 Dean’s mum is very proud of his son and start showing off to her friends.

Dean’s Mother : Hi guys, do you know my son is studying medicine. He is going to be a

doctor soon!

Her friends : Wow, he is awesome!

Dean’s Mother : Yeah, he is hardworking and smart.

Scene 5Slowly, Dean find out he has no interest on medicine. Therefore, he starts to slacks and put lesser efforts on his work . However , his friends still help him in his work.

Lee Ning : Alan, do you know where is Dean?

Alan : I don’t know

Lee Ning : Well, nevermind we can share his part.

Scene 6Few weeks later, Dean still don’t put in any effort on his work.

Lee Ning : What a liar?!

Alan : Should we do his part?

Lee Ning : I am not doing, you can help him if you want…

Narrator : Neither Lee Ning nor Alan is helping Dean. So, Dean failed his course.

Scene 7One week later , Dean got his result for his final exam.

Dean : Oh my god! I failed the assignment? Why ?

Alan : Because you didn’t do your work, of course you failed.

Lee Ning : Yeah. Please put in some effort in assignment.

Lee Ning and Alan walked away.

3. Concepts used and definition.

For this video , 6 psychology concepts were applied and demonstrated through the acting of each of group members. The 7 concepts are social influence, stereotype, confirmation bias, BIRGing, Social Loafing, Diffusion of Responsibilities , Optimistic Bias.

The first concept is stereotype. Stereotype is a thought of an individual is a member of certain group based one characteristic. Its is also an over generalized belief of a class of people. The characteristic involved gender, race, national origin of the person and other factor, individuals may be group into positive stereotypes or negative stereotypes based on their characteristic,

The second concept that used is social influence . Basically , social influence occurs when one's emotions, opinions, or behaviors are affected by others. Social influence is the development of our identity is connected to particular social groups .Social influence is the basis of our self-concept.

Next, the third concept used is Confirmation Bias. Confirmation bias is the tendency of people to favour information that support their personal belief and interpretation and ignore the idea which conflict the belief. . Besides confirmation bias prevents us from considering important informations when making decision due to ignorance to certain information which conflict with the individual’s belief.

The fourth concept used is BIRGing. Basically ,BIRG-ing means an individual associates themselves with known successful others . An individual feels good and extraordinary with others who are successful . The affiliation of another’s success is enough to stimulate self glory.

Then , the fifth concept is Social Loafing. Social loafing is the phenomenon of people exerting less effort to achieve a goal when they work in a group than when they work alone. This is because the individual contributions cannot be identified in a group work.

Next, the sixth concept applied is Optimistic Bias. Optimistic bias is a belief that bad things only happen to others and oneself will feel that they are more likely to experience the positive events in their life.

Lastly, the Diffusion of Responsibilities. This concept is one of the causes that people does not take action to help. People tend to not take actions to help to finish up a group work when others are not helping also. This is because the responsibilities to help is distributed to a few people.

Application of Concepts

Stereotype

The first concept, stereotype is applied where Dean’s friend think all the doctors are successful, have good pay and flexible working hours. Dean’s friends think that being a doctor will definitely have a good pay and flexible working hours. They also think that a doctor will earn a good respect from others and have a bright future. So, they are having a stereotype that doctor is a good occupation.

Social Influence

The second concept that we have applied in the video is social influence. Dean was discussing the future course. He was influenced by his friends and decided to study medicine together. social influence occurs when Dean’s opinions on his future occupation were affected by his friends.

His identity was connected to his friends and had the same thought that being a doctor can make more money and will be respected by the others.Confirmation Bias

Confirmation bias is chosen as the third concept when Dean approached to his mother’s friends, Dr. Teh and Dr. Wade. During the consultation, Dr. Teh gave an honest suggestion for Dean which not all doctors have high pay and flexible working hours. Whereas, Dr. Wade agreed to what Dean has thought to give him a motivation to have the courage to be a doctor.

Based on the different comments, Dean disregarded and ignored what Dr. Teh had told him and tend to focus to Dr. Wade’s comments which supported his opinion. This shows how the confirmation bias comes in and plays.

BIRGing

BIRGing is the fourth concept applied in the story. After Dean has made up his mind to study in medicine, Dean’s mum feels good and extraordinary with Dean who is studying medicine and he will be a doctor in the future . His mother is very proud of him because doctor is really a good occupation which will be respected by the others.

Therefore, his mother started to spread the news to all of her friends and basking in the glory of his son who is going to be a doctor after he is graduated.

Social Loafing

Social loafing is also implemented as the fifth concept in this story when exerting less effort to achieve a goal when they work in a group than when they work alone. Dean felt that he does not need to put in much effort in a group as the individual effort in a group is not identified.

Optimistic Bias

Then, the optimistic bias comes in as the sixth concept. After a few times of Dean’s friends helped him to finish up his part of work, he felt that he was lucky and his friends will always help him to finish up his work. So, he thought that he will never fail for his project even he didn’t put in any effort.

Diffusion of Responsibilities

The last concept we applied is diffusion of responsibilities. It was found when Dean’s group mates were feeling tired to help him to finish his work. Therefore, due to the diffusion of responsibilities, none of them wanted to help Dean with his work. This is because the responsible to help is divided to the group of people.
