Supports from your library and Springer Nature

vol 1(1)

EDITORIAL NOTEWelcome to the first issue of PSASLib-Link newsletter. Across the width and breadth of the country, we're all working hard to support our colleagues to embed high quality support for the development of library and librarian services through conversation, connection and collaboration. In view of these objectives, PSASLib-Link was founded in 2018 as a collaboration effort among Perpustakaan Sultan Abdul Samad (PSAS), Universiti Putra Malaysia and Springer Nature.

PSASLib-Link encompassing all areas of library services and facilities, library collection, material search guide, information resources whether it is printed, digital or other medium. We will publish all types of articles/studies including work on the borders of library, librarianship services and strategy, while strengthening our expertise in traditional library services fields, as well as articles about researchers / research at UPM or other locations and relevant information or current issues to support learning, teaching and research.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank editorial board members for their ongoing commitment to the standards to which the newsletter aspires.

This issue includes coverage on “3 Minutes Thesis”, a joint venture event among Universiti Putra Malaysia and Springer Nature. Our spotlight feature of this issue has been the “KOHA System @ Perpustakaan Sultan Abdul Samad, Universiti Putra Malaysia”, a new PSAS library catalog system.

We look forward to work with all of you as we continue to make PSASLib-Link a success. We welcome your submissions, as well as feedback as authors and readers of the newsletter.

I hope you find this issue of the newsletter useful, informative and enjoyable.

Kind regards. Salmah Abdullah Chief Editor

UPM 3MT FINAL COMPETITION 2018

In 3 Minute Thesis (3MT), postgrad students present their projects to non-specialists and educated amateurs – like the Springer Nature judges who were appointed to join the panel of 3MT judges (see Table 1). UPM was one of the first Malaysian Universities that participated in the National and International competition.

In 2017, a Ph.D. Student from UMP won in the Malaysia 3MT. Why don’t you try to defend you thesis in only 3 minute and become the first proud UPM winner?

KOHA SYSTEM @ PERPUSTAKAAN SULTAN ABDUL SAMAD, UNIVERSITI

PUTRA MALAYSIA

PSASLib-Link Vol. 1(1), 2018 KOHA SYSTEM @ PERPUSTAKAAN SULTAN ABDUL SAMAD, UNIVERSITI PUTRA MALAYSIA

By Shaifol Yazam MatDeputy Chief Librarian,Head, Systems and Information Technology Division, Perpustakaan Sultan Abdul Samad, Universiti Putra [email protected]

Perpustakaan Sultan Abdul Samad (PSAS), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has taken the initiative to replace the existing library management system to KOHA system which is known as the first open-source Integrated Library System and was developed according to the library standards and protocols such as MARC 21, UNIMARC, Z39.50, SRU/SW, SIP2, SIP/NCIP.

The system was officially implemented on November 2016 at the Main Library of the Perpustakaan Sultan Abdul Samad and all its branch libraries including Bintulu Campus Library which is located in Sarawak, East of Malaysia. A working committee which comprises of Librarians from the Library and IT personnel from the InfoComm Development Centre (IDEC), UPM was formed to carry out the task and to make sure that all technical and operational issues are addressed appro-priately. The committee was responsible to ensure that the system was success-fully implemented within the time frame. Among the issues and challenges faced during the implementation processes are:

· To make sure that all data have successfully been migrated· To integrate KOHA system with other systems used by the library· To customize the system according to the needs of the library

Apart from the issues and challenges faced during the implementation processes other factors that the Library take into consideration in using KOHA system are:

• The ability of the system to be fully functional, flexible and cost-effective.• As a cost-saving measures (financial and equipment).• Lower maintenance and license costs.• Web-based platform.• In-house expertise and technical support.• Easy to integrate with other systems and applications.
