PROVERBS 13:1TEACHABILITY

• A wise son hears his father’s instruction, but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke.

• All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

• Are you teachable?• If they listen to you, what do they learn?

WHO LISTENS TO GOD?

• as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” Romans 3:10-12

• Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” John 3:3

• Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 2 Corinthians 5:17

PROVERBS 13:2-3OUR SPEECH HAS CONSEQUENCES

• From the fruit of his mouth a man eats what is good, but the desire of the treacherous is for violence. Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.

• And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. James 3:6

• Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips! Psalms 141:3

PROVERBS 13:4DREAMING VS. DILIGENCE

• The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied.

• What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? James 2:14

• Be diligent about loving the Triune God.

PROVERBS 13:5-6SPEECH: RIGHTEOUS OR WICKED?

• The righteous hates falsehood, but the wicked brings shame and disgrace. Righteousness guards him whose way is blameless, but sin overthrows the wicked.

• God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it? Numbers 23:19

• Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. Ephesians 4:25

PROVERBS 13:7WEALTH & ETHICS: PRETENDER?

• One pretends to be rich, yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth.

• As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, 1 Timothy 6:17-18

PROVERBS 13:8VALUE OF A PERSON?

• The ransom of a man’s life is his wealth, but a poor man hears no threat.

• For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? Matthew 16:26

• knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. 1 Peter 1:18-19

PROVERBS 13:9LIGHT OR DARK?

• The light of the righteous rejoices, but the lamp of the wicked will be put out.

• Do all things without grumbling or questioning, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, Philippians 2:14-15

• Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Philippians 4:4

PROVERBS 13:10PRIDE OR WISDOM?

• By insolence comes nothing but strife, but with those who take advice is wisdom.

• But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:6-7

PROVERBS 13:11EASY COME – EASY GO

• Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it.

• Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. 1Corinthians 6:19-20

PROVERBS 13:12HOPES AND DESIRES

• Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life.

• For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. Romans 8:18

• “And behold, I am coming soon. Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.” Revelation 22:7

PROVERBS 13:13-14SAFETY OR DANGER?

• Whoever despises the word brings destruction on himself, but he who reveres the commandment will be rewarded. The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, that one may turn away from the snares of death.

• Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the LORD! Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart, Psalms 119:1-2

PROVERBS 13:15-16DIFFERENT WAYS OF LIFE

• Good sense wins favor, but the way of the treacherous is their ruin. In everything the prudent acts with knowledge, but a fool flaunts his folly.

• For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. Romans 6:20-22

PROVERBS 13:17FAITHFUL? TRUSTWORTHY?

• A wicked messenger falls into trouble, but a faithful envoy brings healing.

• This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy. 1 Corinthians 4:1-2

• For we are not, like so many, peddlers of God’s word, but as men of sincerity, as commissioned by God, in the sight of God we speak in Christ. 2 Corinthians 2:17

PROVERBS 13:18-19DIFFERENT DESIRES

• Poverty and disgrace come to him who ignores instruction, but whoever heeds reproof is honored. A desire fulfilled is sweet to the soul, but to turn away from evil is an abomination to fools.

• They have eyes full of adultery, insatiable for sin. They entice unsteady souls. They have hearts trained in greed. Accursed children! 2 Peter 2:14

• So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31

PROVERBS 13:20-21DIFFERENT COMPANIONS

• Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm. Disaster pursues sinners, but the righteous are rewarded with good.

• And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. Hebrews 10:24-25

PROVERBS 13:13:22INHERITANCE

• A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, but the sinner’s wealth is laid up for the righteous.

• What will your family inherit from you?

PROVERBS 13:23THE POOR

• The fallow ground of the poor would yield much food, but it is swept away through injustice.

• Do you care?

PROVERBS 13:24PARENTING IN LOVE• Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but

he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.

• Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Ephesians 6:4

• Self-discipline first.

PROVERBS 13:25SATISFIED?• The righteous has enough to satisfy his

appetite, but the belly of the wicked suffers want.

• Now there is great gain in godliness with contentment, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. 1 Timothy 6:6-7

• What will satisfy your soul?
