W ith the cooler winter months behind us and weather warming

up, pools have the potential to become breeding grounds for bugs. However, by taking fi ve simple steps now, pool owners can avoid the much greater cost of making a green pool crystal clear.

First National Real Estate Lake Macquarie principal, Troy Duncan says research shows that 96 per cent of Australian pools take a dive in health during the cooler months, leading to a build up of harmful bacteria, which could aff ect the health of those swimming in it.

“Lots of people take a break from regularly adding chlorine to the pool during winter. But as

the weather warms up, many get caught out with a pool that has suddenly turned green,” he said.

“Pool owners, including tenants leasing properties with pools, should take the time now to check their pools so that they can enjoy them safely throughout the warm summer months.”

Troy said using the services of a professional technician to conduct regular water health and safety checks is sensible and frugal, but you don’t need a science degree to buy and use a test kit from a supermarket.

and nail-biting auction, the Build for a Cure house has sold for $783,000,

with proceeds to be donated to the Children’s Cancer Institute, funding vital medical research to cure childhood cancer.

With seven registered bidders, fi ve active bidders and 16 bids above the reserve, the Build for a Cure home, built and fully furnished in Sydney’s west, was purchased by a lucky family who can now call the four-bedroom, two-bathroom house a home.

New owner, Rosemary and son Stefan Dorakay said: “This is just so incredible and so exciting. We drove past during the build, seeing all the tradies working so hard – we never thought at the time we would be its fi rst owners”.

“It was a whirlwind auction and it came down to the last $500. We’re thrilled to have bought a house that will have such a posi-tive impact on childhood cancer,”

said Ms Dorakay, who was thrilled with the result.

The auction was abuzz with activity as a huge crowd descended upon 59 Forestwood Drive, Glenmore Park last month. Among the serious bidders vying for a piece of western Sydney’s hotly contested real estate were families of the partners and suppliers involved in the signifi -cant build.

“This house is phenomenal,” said PRD Nationwide real estate agent, Daniel Latty.

“Not only do we have a luxury family home, but the fact that it has sold fully furnished... is not something the Penrith market has seen before, so the lucky new owners have really hit the jackpot with this unique house.”

Children’s Cancer Institute Executive Director Professor Michelle Haber AM said the Build for a Cure house is an extraordi-nary gift to the Children’s Cancer Institute, marking 30 years of

dedicated medical research to fi nd a cure for childhood cancer.

“I am thrilled that Children’s Cancer Institute is the benefi ciary of Build for a Cure, a wonderfully innovative project, and I am blown away by the generosity of our partners who have made this happen,” she said.

“This ground-breaking campaign will raise much-needed funds that will take us a step closer to curing childhood cancer. It’s not if, it’s when.”

It’s BBQ time!

S ummer’s coming which means it’s time to get outdoors and get cook-ing. But with a huge range

of barbecue options on the market it can be a little overwhelming when it comes to choosing the newest member of the cooking family.

To help make the process a little easier Bunnings National Barbe-cue Buyer, Kristen Beer has some suggestions on how to create the perfect outdoor cooking area.

Before you pick a barbecue think about how many people you will be cooking for and the size of your outdoor area. If most of your barbecuing will be for less than four people then a two burner should be enough to do the job. But if you tend to have larger gatherings you may want to

consider a six burner. If you have a small space then a compact port-able barbecue is the best option, whereas bigger decks and patios will be able to accommodate large outdoor kitchens.

Next thing to consider is the fuel source for your barbecue. For those who are new to barbecuing gas is the perfect option as it’s easy

Tips for your garage

Don’t let it become a tip: Yes, your garage is great for storage but there’s no reason to make it resemble a rubbish dump. Keep your garage organised and clean. It’ll allow you to have more space and better access to things you’ve chosen to store.

Hang pictures: Are you no longer allowed to hang that awesome piece of sporting memorabilia in the house? Consider turning your garage walls into a shrine of great posters and pictures.

Use boxes: Don’t just randomly throw your items in your garage. Get some really good shelving and some storage boxes. We’re not talking old cardboard boxes here, but legitimate storage boxes from a storage store. Mark the boxes clearly and place items you wish to store in them. This will keep the items in really good condition and also ensure you have easy access to them when they’re needed.
