Small hydro development
The awareness of the absolute necessity to develop
renewable energies is strong all over the World and many
countries have developed support mechanism in order to
increase the use of renewable in the whole energy sector.
As a key actor of green electricity production, small hydro
benefits from this global trend: new projects are sets, new
products are made available on the market, environmental
integration is now a key issue considered by the project
developers.
However, the future of hydropower in Europe is uncertain.
The implementation of regulation on water management and
protection, and the growing concern and requirements from
the environmental point of view, are damaging the image of
hydropower. Moreover, these regulations will really impact
on the production and development of the remaining hydro
potential. Therefore, it is then particularly important to make
a change and to demonstrate that hydropower is not only
alive, but also dynamic. Altogether, we can make a change!
Hidroenergia Congresses
Organized since 1989, Hidroenergia Congresses gather
more than 300 experts and specialists of the SHP sector in
Europe to debate about the hot topics affecting the devel-
opment of the sector, exchange experiences and present
new advances in the technology as well as to network and
find business opportunities and partners.
After Bled (Slovenia) in 2008, Hidroenergia 2010 will take
place in June 2010 in Lausanne, Switzerland.
The organizers
Hidroenergia congresses are co-organized by ESHA and
one of its members representing the hosted country, being
MHyLab for this year’s edition.
ESHA, the European Small Hydropower Association, is a
non-profit International Association representing the sector
of small hydropower that brings together specialists and
stakeholders in the SHP field from all over the world.
MHyLab is a non-profit-making foundation, independent of
any manufacturer or company, established in Montcherand,
Switzerland. This skill center develops turbines fitted to
small hydropower, supplies hydraulic design to small
manufacturers and proposes specialized engineering
services to the small hydro stakeholders.
Who should attend?
Hidroenergia 2010 will bring together planners, developers,
owners and operators, environmental specialists, financiers,
researchers, students, manufacturers and suppliers for an
exchange of expertise which will be constructive in further-
ing well planned hydropower development worldwide.

Congress language
Located in the French speaking part of Switzerland,
Lausanne is the second largest city on the shores of Lake
Geneva; it combines the dynamics of a business town with
its ideal location as a holiday resort. Sport and culture are
a golden rule in the Olympic Capital. A city that is stra-
tegically placed at the crossroads of Europe and easily
accessible from Geneva International Airport. Spreading
between vineyards, forests and meadows, Lausanne is
considered as one of the greenest towns in Europe. A set-
ting of quality and tranquility endowed with all the services
and comforts of a small European metropolis. The city has
all it takes to offer ideal working conditions for congress
delegates. For those accompanying, the city has plenty to
offer: Shopping, culture, wellness, gastronomy or simply
strolling around.
Lausanne is also well known for its outstanding university
the UNIL and the “Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale”, EPFL,
with more than 20,000 students, not only from Switzerland
but from around the globe.
Lausanne and its Congress Center are located at only
45 minutes from the Geneva International Airport offering
connections from all major European cities. www.gva.ch
The city is also of easy access by train, located at only
4 hours from Paris with the TGV. www.cff.ch
Thanks to its topography and hydrology, Switzerland has
ideal conditions for the use of hydropower. Participating
for about 57% of the national electricity generation, hydro-
power is Switzerland most important domestic source of
renewable energy. Today there are 538 hydropower plants
in Switzerland that each have a capacity of at least 300 kW.
Their average yearly production is around 35,500 GWh,
47% of which is produced by run-of-river power plants,
49% by storage power plants and approximately 4% by
pumped storage power plants. Two thirds of hydroelectric-
ity are generated in the mountain cantons of Uri, Grisons,
Ticino and Valais, while Aargau and Bern also generate
significant quantities. Roughly 10% of Switzerland’s hydro-
power generation comes from international power plants
situated on rivers along the country borders. The federal
government wants to promote the future use of hydro-
power to a greater extent through a variety of measures.
The instruments to be used here include feed-in tariffs for
hydropower plants with a capacity up to 10 MW, and the
promotion measures defined in the “Renewable energy”
action plan. In terms of quantity, the goal is to increase the
mean estimated production level by at least 2,000 GWh per
year versus the level recorded in 2000 by renovating exist-
ing hydropower plants and building new ones.
Lausanne’s conference venue offers equipment that
allows participants to get the most out of every event, and
a broad range of hotels are available for every budget.
The Beaulieu Congress Center is within close proximity
to the downtown area, making all destinations optimally
accessible thanks to the availability of public transporta-
tion services. www.beaulieu.org
The majority of the presentation will be made in English. However a high level simultaneous
translation in French and German will be insured for all sessions.

Technical visits
The best way to get to know the Olympic Capital is to start
in Ouchy, on the shores of Lake Geneva, with a visit at the
Olympic Museum. You will then make your way up towards
the center to discover the highlights and interests of the
city. This tour will end around noon leaving you plenty
of time to enjoy lunch. The afternoon is free to continue
the visit on your own, shop or simply relax at your hotel.
A bus will take you to the foot
of the Pre-Alps, in Gruyère, to
discover the charms of this
region.
Who has not dreamed of
visiting a chocolate factory?
Discover the process of choc-
olate manufacturing and the
odors that come from it in the famous Cailler of Switzerland
(Nestlé) chocolate factory in Broc. Thanks to an interactive
guided tour, you will discover the secrets of chocolate
manufacturing inside this operating factory. The visit also
traces the history of the factory from 1898.
After lunch head off to The Lavaux Vineyard Terraces
(UNESCO World Heritage). A perfect setting overlooking
at the lake, to stop and discover the vines of the region!

Guided City Tour (half day)
Gruyère, Cailler Chocolate Factory
and the vineyards (full day)
With more than 1000 small plants in operation, Switzerland
has a long history with small hydropower. Moreover,
Switzerland has a long tradition from multiuse of water;
the first experience with turbining drinking water comes
already from the beginning of 20th century.
Our first technical visit will be at Profay (380 kW) small
hydropower plant located in the Bagnes commune. This
scheme turbines wastewater from the Verbier ski resort
before treatment. The project started as a demonstration
in 1994 but the equipment has been renewed in 2008, the
available discharge having radically changed.
Then, we will change size and continue to Bieudron power
plant, which has a total installed capacity of 1,269 MW.
The plant turbines the water from the Cleuson-Dixence
complex. Bieudron power plant alone holds three world
records: gross head (1,883 m), mechanical output of each
Pelton turbine (423 MW) and output per alternator’s pole.
Built between 1993 and 1998 to increase the complex
production capacity, Cleuson Dixence installation is made
up of:
a water intake in the Grande Dixence dam,
a 15.8 km feeder duct
a 4.3 km long metal-lined pressure shaft
Bieudron underground power plant
After lunch, on the way back to Lausanne, we will visit
Mini Farettes hydropower plant (178 kW) in Aigle, which
produces electricity using the residual height difference
between the outlet of a high-head power plant and the
Grande Eau River.
