Back Ground

Khushal Awareness & Development Organization (KADO) is a not for profit and non-

governmental organization, launched on 02-July-2002 by a group of volunteers, human rights

activists, young community development professionals and concerned citizens. KADO is

registered under Social welfare Act 1961 working in Southern Districts of Khyber Pakhtoon

Khua for sustainable livelihood, welfare, development and preservation of marginalized groups

including women and children. The NGO is working for women development through advocacy,

community empowerment through sensitization and income generation activities, interfaith

harmony, gender development, health hygiene, water and sanitation of the effected community

in Khyber Pakhtoon Khua (KPK).

environment and promote sustainable development.

Objectives of the organization are as follows;

To educate the deprived and under privileged common folk about the basic

human rights and find basis to incorporate their efforts in mobilization to achieve

maximum output

Buildings capacities of the local communities/ Govt. and Non government

organizations and skills development institutes with the focus on local female

folk in the development initiatives

To organize and facilitate youth development activities/formation of youth

groups/networks and to engage them in activities related to achieve Millennium

Development Goals at the local level

Assistance to CSOs, CBOs and VOs and Local Interest Groups is rendered to

utilize and find projects to raise financial status particularly in women folk

mobilization activities

To devise and organize activities for women, and children particularly to their

rights to acquire education, improve health and earnings

Distribution of Winterization Kits among the Returnees of Orakzai Agency

Funded By: UN-OCHA

Start Date: 08-03-2011 Target Area: Lower Orakzai Agency

KADO with the collaboration of UNOCHA’s Emergency Response Fund intervened into the

Orakzai Agency and has targeted 1700 families out of 9000 who are to be benefited through

Winterization Kits in the villages of Mamo Zai and Esa Khel of Mishti tribe.

Formation of Union Council Delegates

Start Date: 09-04-2011 Target Area: District Kohat

The extension and activation of LCA at the local level is crucially needed, as the term of all

three tiers of local governance expired last year and provincial governments including federal

government has been delaying holding elections, after deputing administrators all over country

on one or another pretext, mainly to violate the constitutional provisions and alienating them to

govern at the grassroots through their elected representatives. The roles and responsibilities for

the formation of Local Council Associations in all 32 Union Councils of District Kohat is given to

KADO.

Fatima Jinnah Computer Academy and Vocational Training Center

Funded by: District Zakat (Alms) Office, Kohat

Start Date: September, 2004 Target Area: District Kohat

This academy was established by KADO in September 2003 for skill development of the needy

and poor females so that they improve their financial status utilizing the learnt skills in Fatima

Jinnah Computer Academy and Vocational Training Center. Since January 2004, this academy

is funded by District Zakat Office Kohat. So it has been 6 years of cooperation from Zakat

Office. The courses offered to the needy females are,

Computer Courses Beautician Courses Mazri Work Beat’s Work Sewing

Along with Zakat Office Kohat, Fatima Jinnah Academy was financially supported by some

other donors like RHIYA and BARANI for 1 month and 1year respectively. So far 1034 female

have been trained in above mentioned programmes out of which 756 were trained in computer

courses, 113 in beautician courses, 30 in Mazri courses, 15 in Beats Work Courses and 120

females developed and enhanced their skills in Sewing.

Campaign on Promotion of Peace and Democracy

Target Area: Kohat District

This cause of National Commission for Justice and Peace (NCJP) was supported and launched

in Kohat district by KADO in September 2009. 1 seminar and 10 corner meetings with

community and their elders were conducted in Kohat district by KADO and still some activities

are being carried out for the same cause like formation of peace committees on U/C level for

the restoration of peace in the targeted district.

Completed Projects

To Support the Second Shift Schooling for IDPs at District Kohat

Funded by: UNICEF

Start Date: 01-12-2010 End Date: 31-01-2011

Duration: 2 Months Target Area: District Kohat

Government of Khyber Pakhtoonkhawa and UNICEF jointly organized Second Shift Schools for

the children of Orakzai Agency IDPs in Kohat District. UNICEF in collaboration with Education

Department Kohat intended to pay the salaries of 73 male and 17 female teachers of these

second shift schools along with the 47 support staff members. KADO signed a project

agreement with UNICEF to monitor the process of the distribution of salary cheques among the

above mentioned staff of these schools. According to this PCA, KADO will have regular

meetings with Education Department Staff and EDO Kohat district and the Organization will

check and monitor all the activities of Education Department regarding the distribution of pay

cheques to make sure the transparency in the distribution of salaries.

Emergency WASH Response to Flood Affected People of District Hangu

Funded by: UNICEF

Duration: 6 Months Target Area: 4 U/Cs of District Hangu

2000 flood affected families in 4 union councils of District Hangu were being targeted by KADO.

These 4 union councils are Raisan, Kach, Khan Bari and Ganjiano Kalley. These are the areas

where damage was severely done by flood and heavy rain water. The services which are being

provided by KADO in Hangu are, distribution of Hygiene Kits and provision of water, sanitation

and hygiene facilities (Cleaning and minor repair of drains, Installation of Hand Pumps / Water

Tanks, Repairing and maintenance of Toilets, Installation of Solid Waste Bins, Minor Repair of

Water Sources).

Urgent WASH Response to 186 Floods Affected Families Settled in 25 Schools of

Kohat, Bannu and Lakki Marwat Districts of Khyber Pakhtoon Khua

Duration: 14 Days Target Area: Districts Kohat, Bannu and Lakki Marwat

After the torrential rain and flood damages, provincial government of KPK along with local

authorities of the mentioned districts provided camps for the flood affected families. In order to

meet their urgent need, KADO with collaboration of UNICEF provided the WASH facilities and

hygiene promotion in quick response. The services provided by KADO to these 97 families

were,

Provision of Hygiene Kits and Hygiene Promotion for IDPs of Orakzai and Kurram Agencies in District Hangu

Duration: 2 Months Target Area: 2 U/Cs of District Hangu Due to unrest situation in Orakzai and Kurram Agencies, thousands of families migrated to Kohat and Hangu residing in camps and in host communities. For 1000 IDP families in Hangu, KADO provided WASH facilities in the targeted areas of Hangu with the support of Concern Worldwide RAPID Fund. The services provided by KADO were as follows; Distribution of Hygiene Kits. Hygiene Promotion activities Formation of Hygiene Promotion Committees Water Quality Testing

Pakistan Safe Drinking Water & Hygiene Promotion Project (PSDW-HPP) Phase - 2

Duration: 4 Months Target Area: F.R Kohat (Darra Adam Khel, Jawaki)

With the support of Abt. Associates, KADO initiated the 2nd phase of Pakistan Safe Drinking Water and Hygiene Promotion Project in F.R Kohat including Darra Adam Khel and Jawaki. In 2nd phase, KADO formed a Water Usage Committee in Atariwal Village, Darra Adam Khel and enhanced its member’s capacity in Community Management Skills, Basic Accounting and Record Keeping. 300 Traditional Birth Attendees (TBAs) and 250 Religious Leaders were trained regarding hygiene promotion. BCC material regarding promotion of hygienic practices and simple methods of water purification was distributed among these 300 TBAs, 250 Religious Leaders and 97 primary level male and female teachers of F.R Kohat. These TBAs, Religious Leaders and Primary Level Teachers were the prime channels of Hygiene Promotion at grass root level in F.R Kohat. Also 15 staff members of the Agency Education Office were being oriented regarding the BCC material of Hygiene Promotion in Schools.

Hygiene Promotion and Distribution of Hygiene Kits to Orakzai and Kurram Agency IDPs in District Kohat

Duration: 4 Months Target Area: District Kohat With support and zeal of UNICEF, KADO benefited 10000 IDP families of Orakzai and Kurram Agencies with distribution of hygiene kits, jerry cans and buckets along with hygiene promotion sessions in district Kohat. This project was 2nd phase of the PCA with UNICEF. 128 hygiene sessions were conducted by male and female hygiene promoters of KADO making the targeted IDP families hygiene conscious.

Distribution of Hygiene Kits, NFI’s to 7840 IDPs families Living with Host Populations at Kohat District

Duration: 2 Months Target Area: District Kohat In phase 1st of the PCA with UNICEF, KADO had the target of 3000 IDPs families of Orakzai and Kurram Agencies for the distribution of Hygiene Kits and Buckets. After the extension of this project, the total number of beneficiaries reached to 7840 families. All of these families were benefited with Hygiene Kits and Buckets.

Provision of WASH Facilities at Paloosa IDPs Camp, District Charsadda Funded by: UNICEF

Start Date: 02-02-2010 End Date: 30-04-2010

Duration: 3 Months Target Area: District Charsadda KADO started its journey as an Implementing Partner with UNICEF on 02-02-2010 in WASH sector. It began with 1 Camp of Bajor Agency IDPs in Paloosa, Charsadda. The services delivered by KADO were Hygiene Promotion Sessions and Provision of WASH facilities in this camp. KADO benefited 438 IDP families of Bajor Agency. Youth Civic Engagement Activities in FR Kohat

Duration: 4 Months Target Area: F.R Kohat KADO initiated the Youth Civic Engagement Programme in F.R Kohat in collaboration with FDP-LD (IRC). Basic purpose of this project was to engage the youth in extra curriculum activities so that youth doesn’t involve them selves in terrorist activities. KADO formed 5 youth organizations and then involved these groups in 2 Sports Events (1 Volley Ball and 1 Football Event), 1 Exposure Visits in Islamabad and Murree on World Youth Day, 1 First Aid Training and 3 Leadership Management Skills Trainings.

Pakistan Safe Drinking Water & Hygiene Promotion Project (PSDW-HPP) Phase - 1

Duration: 5 Months Target Area: F.R Kohat (Darra Adam Khel, Jawaki)

This 1st phase of the PSDW-HP project was initiated by KADO in F.R Kohat in collaboration

with Abt. Associates Inc. for Capacity Building (CB) of Primary Level Male / Female School

Teachers regarding Hygiene Promotion in Primary Schools and capacity building of Water User

Committee, TMA, PHE staff including Tube well operators, Plumbers and LG members

regarding Operating & Maintaining the Water Filtration Plants, Water Quality Testing and

Hygiene Promotion.

Advocacy Campaign on Mother and Child Health Care of Relevant MDG’s

Funded by: EIROP-UNDP

Start Date: 05-12-2007 End Date: 31-02-2008

Duration: 3-months Target Area: District Kohat

An advocacy campaign was launched with the support of EIROP on the issue of Mother and

Child Health Care. This campaign was needed to be launched in District Kohat due to high

mortality rate of infants and pregnant women. KADO conducted community seminars at grass

root level in almost every union council of district Kohat making the community more conscious

about mother and child health care. This effort by KADO was appreciated at all levels in the

communities of district Kohat for making people aware on such an important issue.

Awareness Campaign on “WE CAN END HONOR KILLING” Regarding Women Rights

Funded by: OXFAM GB

Duration: 2-Years Target Area: District Kohat

KADO is the organization which is based on the ideology of Equal Rights to man and woman.

Half of the executive members of KADO are women. As for as staff of the organization is

concern, KADO have the policy of equal opportunity to both the males and females. The

campaign against honor killing was launched by KADO in collaboration with OXFAM GB to

support women victim of violence and torture. Large numbers of honor killing cases are

reported in Pakistan especially in KPK. So KADO initiated this campaign to aware the people

on women’s rights and sensitize them to support this cause. Awareness raising seminars were

conducted in district Kohat regarding this issue and above 5000 male and female volunteers

were registered as Change Maker. Also a dialogue was initiated by KADO with community

elders and religious leaders in support of women’s rights and to mitigate this evil of honor killing

from the society. Along with all above mentioned activities, KADO celebrated a “Hunar Mela” in

district Kohat during the 16 days of activism (25th November to 10th December) in support of

skilled women and provided a platform to display their skills, marketing of their products and for

improving their financial status.

Monitoring and Evaluation of CCB Mobilization Training in District Kohat

Duration: 1-Year Target Area: District Kohat

During a campaign and training programme on CCB formation, KADO was assigned a task of

Monitoring and Evaluation of these trainings in 32 union councils of district Kohat. Because of

KADO’s efforts, this campaign was successfully completed in Kohat and --- CCB were newly

registered with Social Welfare Department. Also KADO mobilized communities at grass root

level for the formation of CCBs at union council level and formed a CCB cluster. KADO

enhanced the capacities of several CCB members through its training programmes of

organizational development. Not only this, KADO performed a role of bridge between donors

and CCBs.

Youth Resource Center at Village Muhammadzai, Kohat

Funded by: Family Planning Association of Pakistan

Start Date: 2003 to Till Date

Target Area: Village Muhammadzai, Kohat

KADO always consider youth as change agent of the society and always had some plans to

engage the youth in some kind of positive and constructive thought provoking activities like so

that the youth doesn’t have any inclination to destructive activities like street crimes or terrorism

as it is known that youth is being used as a tool to increase in terrorist activities in Pakistan and

in other countries of the region. So KADO formed a Youth Resource Center in village

Muhammadzai of Kohat district and mobilized youth for their better future through a library

containing hundreds of books related to general knowledge, Islam and its history and books

related to literature. Also KADO engaged the youth of Muhammadzai in sports activities like

cricket, football and volley ball. Several exposure visits have been arranged for the youth

groups of Muhammadzai.

Community Infrastructure Programme Funded by: SRSP

Duration: Short Term Projects Target Area: Village Muhammadzai, Kohat

With the support of Serhad Rural Support Programme, KADO initiated the Community

Infrastructure Programme in Muhammadzai village of Kohat district. Several irrigation channels

and flood protection walls were constructed and also numerous streets and drains pavement

was done by the organization in village Muhammadzai. 26 hand pumps were installed so the

safe drinking water was provided to the villagers by these hand pumps.

Establishment of Adult Literacy Centers Funded by: NCHD

Start Date: 2003 End Date: 2005

Duration: 2 Years Target Area: District Kohat

With the support of National Commission for Human Development, KADO established 300

adult literacy centers for the non-formal education to those adults who never had the

opportunity of education. These literacy centers were established at U/C level in different areas

of district Kohat. KADO met the community elders for gaining support and made the community

participation assured in these literacy centers. These centers were established in different

areas which were identified through base line survey conducted by KADO.

Community Infrastructure Programme Funded by: C.I.P

Start Date: 2008 End Date: 2009

Duration: 1-Year Target Area: Village Muhammadzai, Kohat

With the support of C.I.P, KADO did a lot of work for infrastructure development through its

Community Infrastructure Programme in Muhammadzai village of Kohat district. Several streets

and drains pavement was done by the organization in village Muhammadzai. Numerous water

supply pipe lines were lain down for the provision of safe drinking water to the villagers along

with the construction of black top road in main streets of Muhammadzai village.

Model Village Programme Funded by: RWSSP

Duration: 1-year Target Area: Village Muhammadzai, Kohat

In accordance with Community Infrastructure Programme, KADO started Model Village

Programme in village Muhammadzai of Kohat district. Once again pavement of numerous

streets and drains was done in Muhammadzai along with lain down of water supply pipelines.

70 new hand pumps were installed in different locations of the village Muhammadzai.

Implementation of Skill Training (Technical) of the Village Level Development Component

Funded by: BADP-II, SRSP

Start Date: 2008 End Date: 2009

Duration: 3-months Target Area: Kohat and Karak Districts

With the collaboration of SRSP, KADO trained several organizations and females in

organizational development skills, beautician courses, computer courses and Mazri courses.

These trainings were conducted in district Kohat and district Karak of KPK. Numbers of

organizations and females were trained in above mentioned skills in both districts making their

organizational and personal future bright.

Campaign to End Violence against Women

Start Date: November 2009

Duration: 1 Month Target Area: Kohat District

In accordance with KADO’s philosophy of equal rights for men and women, KADO launched a

campaign regarding men’s role in ending the violence against women. This campaign was

launched with the support of White Ribbon Campaign in district Kohat. KADO organized and

conducted numerous activities during this campaign like Seminar, community meetings,

distribution of I.E.C Material etc. along with the Candle Vigil Campaign at Kohat district

regarding women’s rights.

Support Local Organizations in Forestry Development and Guava Promotion

Funded by: Agribusiness Support Fund (ASF) Lahore

Start Date: January 2009 End Date: June 2009

Duration: 6 Months Target Area: Kohat District

In order to support organizations in Forestry Development and Guava Promotion, KADO in

collaboration with ASF Lahore formed numbers of Farmer Enterprise Groups in district Kohat

along with the Packaging and designing of the Guava Cartons and Marketing of this fruit.

KADO conducted the Capacity Building Trainings for Farmer Enterprise Groups for the

Production and Marketing of Guava.

Construction of Skill Development Center for Female at Village

Muhammadzai

Funded by: District Govt. Kohat

Start Date: September 2008 End Date: March 2009

Duration: 7 Months Target Area: Village Muhammadzai, Kohat

With the funding of District Government Kohat, KADO constructed and established a Skill

Development Center for Females in Muhammadzai village. A large number of females were

trained by female instructors in this center through numerous vocational courses like sewing,

beats work, Mazri and computer courses. Muhammadzai elders showed lot of trust on KADO

and let their females to be trained in these vocational courses.

Establishment of Public Library at Village Muhammadzai Funded by: District Govt. Kohat

Start Date: May 2008 End Date: September 2009

Duration: 7 Months Target Area: Village Muhammadzai, Kohat With the support of district govt. Kohat, KADO established a public library in village Muhammadzai. KADO purchased hundreds of books and registered members from the village. A large number of people became member of this library and issued books related to general knowledge, Islam and its history, Urdu and Pashto literature.
