Process Chemicals for the Paper Industry

PeTROFeR offers a wide range of highly-sophisticated and specialised chemicals for the paper industry. In the tissue industry we are particularly recognised in the sector

of crepe control.

Using PeTROFeR coating chemicals, which are applied to the Yankee cylinder using a spraying system designed by ourselves, allows an increase in the runnability of the

machine, enabling the production of a high quality, soft tissue.

All of these products have been developed for specific customers, applications and processes and are fully supported by our comprehensive technical service.

All products which are dosed constantly are approved according to the XXXVI recom-mendation of BfR for the health-related evaluation of materials and objects for the

contact with foodstuffs, in the frame of the Foodstuffs and Consumer Goods Code.

Crepe Control at the Yankee

The application of our coating chemicals and our technical know-how enables customers to optimise specific quality

parameters, and also increase the productivity of the paper machine.

Creping is a special area of interest for our customers.

The creping process is carried out by the doctor blade shearing the fibre structure of the paper web. With better adhesion of the paper web to the cylinder, more fibres are

sheared resulting in a finer crepe structure.

COTAC® Adhesion Agents „Cylinder Protection and Adhesion“

The Cotac adhesive agents are listed in the product range Cotac-H. All Cotac adhesive agents are based on polymer solutions which form a sticky liquid film

on the Yankee due to the surface temperature.

This film serves as a matrix for dissolving fines from the paper and together with them the real coating is created.

Due to the formation of the coating, the creping blade is separated from the cylin-der which, in turn, is separated from the wet paper web by means of a soft film.

Consequently, both mechanical abrasion and chemical corrosion of the cylinder is prevented.

Because of the characteristic of the polymers to create chemical and physical bondings with the paper web, the web will adhere securely to the cylinder and

therefore forms the basic conditions for the creping process.

The Cotac-H product range is comprised of products with different coating properties (harder-softer coating) and different adhesion to the paper web

(stronger - weaker bond).

The selection of the suitable Cotac adhesive agent is done according to

- the paper product type, grade and type of furnish

- the drying conditions at the paper machine

- the trial targets (runnability, softness etc.)

A scanning electron microscope photograph of a supersoft tissue, manufactured with Cotac adhesion agent and Cotac modifier, is shown in the upper photo.

In comparison to this a conventionally produced tissue is shown in the lower photo.

The shearing of the fibre structure as well as the creping can clearly be seen.

COTAC® Modifiers and Edge Treatment „Coating Customisation“

Cotac-Modifiers are specifically used for modifications of the Cotac base coating. They are used to meet customer requirements with regard to the coating system as

well as for adjusting special parameters within the system.

Cotac-Modifiers include the following product groups:

- Cotac-C: Phosphate containing products applied to improve the protection of the Yankee cylinder and to increase the service life of the blades.

At the Yankee edges, which are not covered by the paper web, deposits often occur. This effect is not desirable, and leads to vibration of the creping blade. This results

in a reduced service life of the blade, inconsistent paper quality and possibly chatter marks appearing in the Yankee metal surface.

In order to avoid these deposits, we have developed products especially for this problem.

These products are applied at the Yankee edges by means of a separate spray bar.

Release Agents „Optimum Coating Control“

Our ReLeASe AGeNTS enable the coating on the cylinder and the adhesion to the web to be controlled. In this way it is possible to react to variations in system parameters (e.g. furnish or

grade changes).

The releasing effect is influenced by physical changes in the boundary layer at the coating-paper interface.

As a result of the good tribological properties of ReLeASe AGeNTS the blade life is increased and through their physical characteristics heat transfer is enhanced.

The selection of the ReLeASe AGeNT is made according to the type of chemistry required (e.g. mineral oil or synthetic), the strength of the releasing effect and their emulsifying properties

dependent upon the spray water quality.

ISOFOAM®

„System Designed Defoamers & Deaerators“

The defoamers and deaerators in our product range are „system designed“, i.e. they are custo-mised to provide optimum performance with the paper machine water system and the coating

in use.

Air can enter the pulp in a variety of ways and if it becomes stabilised it can cause serious prob-lems, such as: surface foam, inconsistent sheet formation, pinholes and insufficient dewatering.

Optimised usage of stock deaerators and defoamers is therefore an instrument for process and quality control for the paper manufacturer.

The Isofoam range includes both products for the elimination of surface foam, and for the deaera-tion of air dispersed in water circuits.

FEROCLEAN®

„Runnability due to Cleanliness“

In order to guarantee problem free production for our customers we offer a complete range of cleaners for the maintenance of pipes, wires and felts. The product group includes both acidic

and alkaline cleaners as well as solvent cleaners, with and without VOC substances (VOC=volatile organic compound).

All our cleaners are free from complexing agents.

A regular shock or continual wash maintains the dewatering capacity of felts and wires, and improves their moisture profile and service life. This considerably increases the runnability and

efficiency of the paper machine. The selection of the best suitable cleaner type is done according to the paper machine problems, and analysis of deposits.

FEROCLEAN CS

„Your Specialist for Microbiological Control of Process Waters“

Due to the fact that the temperature and the pH of the process water cannot be altered arbitra-rily, slime problems can only be controlled by increasing the oxygen content and/or a controlled

application of microbiocides.

The application of FeROCLeAN CS products can eliminate anaerobic bacteria and the odours caused by them in circulating systems. In addition, a reduction in the total bacteria population is

also achieved.

The FeROCLeAN CS product group contains several different microbicidal agents.

The selection of the suitable FeROCLeAN CS product, the dosage level, the point of application and the application frequency depend on the nature of the water circuit and the specific problems on

site. A full site survey by PeTROFeR, will determine the optimum treatment and product ration of air dispersed in water circuits.

Lubricants

In our lubricant range we offer products which guarantee a consistent process.

Isocut PAPCutting agent for rewinder slitting blades, applied to increase their life

and performance.

PrägewalzölHigh performance speciality oils for the protection and cleaning of embossing rolls. They also help

to reduce odour created during the embossing process.

Isogrind PAPGrinding fluids for blades, used in the production and regrinding of doctor blades.
