1. SPRAYINGIn the spray area, the COATING-chemicals are applied onto thecylinder.

The COTAC adhesive agents are based on polymer solutions.

Parameters for an effective application are:

  spray angle, type and distance

  type of spray nozzles

  temperature of the spray water

  surface roughness

  spray pressure

  surface energy of Yankee surface

  possible residual coating

8/10/2019 PETROFER - Yankee Coating

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/petrofer-yankee-coating 25/128

2. CURING

Water evaporates from the COTAC-polymer solution

Formation of a soft polymerfilm with a high water content

The polymer filmcreates wet tacking

The wet adhesion isnecessary for safe anduniform web pick up

8/10/2019 PETROFER - Yankee Coating

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/petrofer-yankee-coating 26/128

3. REWETTING

The polymer film is rewetted in the nip press rollthrought the paper web

Increase of wet adhesion

By means of diffusion, fines and additives fromthe pulp reach the open, wet adhesive polymer

film

COATING FORMATION

4. FIXING• The dewatering of the coating is carried out by

means of dryingDrying

• Contact drying through the cylinder / strong influence

• Drying process by means of hood energy

• With increased drying

The coating gets harder

 the adhesion increases

• A chemical reaction between coating molecules andcellulose molecules takes place

• During the rotation, the paper web is safely fixed

onto the cylinder

Positively charged calcium ions neutralize thecarboxylate groups of the cellulose located at the paper web surface

In doing so, the formation of chemical and physical bondings, which are essential for the adhesion, is inhibited. With regard to the technical side, the heat transfer

is reduced due to the formation of a calcium carbonate layer.

8/10/2019 PETROFER - Yankee Coating

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/petrofer-yankee-coating 49/128

PRODUCT: COTAC 35H

Description: This product is an aqueous, reactive polymer

solution similar to Cotac 33H but Cotac 35 H is

chemically stabilized. This reduces the reactivity

and thus the adhesion. The advantage is the

increased storage stability.

Experience: The viscosity of the most Cotac base coatings is

decreased with increasing shelf life, same is theadhesion. These effects are insignificant within the

normal application period but at a 6 weeks transfer

to China or Chile they are more significant.

Customers: No customers so far

Outlook: Cotac 35H is especially suitable for overseas

transports due to its high storage stability.

PRODUCT: COTAC 50H

8/10/2019 PETROFER - Yankee Coating

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/petrofer-yankee-coating 50/128

PRODUCT: COTAC 50H

Description: Aqueous solution of reactive polymers

and additives

Experience: In the lab, the product shows an excellent

dry adhesion at moderate wet tack.

Despite of the high dry adhesion, the film

is very soft

Customers: No customers so far

Outlook:  The product can be applied ascounterproduct to the PAL adhesion

agents. The performance is similar but the

chemical basis is completely different

PRODUCT: COTAC 3149H

8/10/2019 PETROFER - Yankee Coating

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/petrofer-yankee-coating 51/128

PRODUCT: COTAC 3149H

Description: Aqueous, highly concentrated polymer

solution based on polyaminoamid resins.

The product corresponds to the XXXVI.recommendation of BfR

Experience: Excellent coating agent. The coating is

softer and the adhesion slightly higher

compared to Cotac 33 H. Atinhomogeneous coating, it is possible to

do without a modifier.

Customers: Delicarta, Lucchesse, P&G Neuss,

Kartogroup France, Renova, Omega

Outlook:  The product is less expensive compared

to the other base coatings and shows an

excellent cost-performance ratio.

8/10/2019 PETROFER - Yankee Coating

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/petrofer-yankee-coating 52/128

PRODUCT: COTAC 3169H, COTAC 3207H, COTAC 3225H

Description: These products are the cost effective

pendants to the classical base coatings

Cotac 33H, Cotac 27H and Cotac 25H. The

products have been well received at our

customers and now have a fixed customer

base.

Experience: In general, the adhesion is slightly

reduced compared to our classics and the

coating is softer.

FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS

A new product is currently not developed. With our existing

spectrum of base coating products we have a comprehensive

program which completely fulfills all requirements for an

optimum cylinder coating.

Nevertheless we are constantly screening new classes of

substances. As an example we tested the application of

renewable alginates.

Apart from the technical performance, other factors such as

disposability of the raw materials, prices, approvals of

international formalities (e.g. FDA) play an important role.

The application of COTAC 115C

p p g y ggrinding (Yankee)

Motivation:

1. After the grinding of the cylinder, the cylinder surface is not completelycured. At insufficient cylinder protection, there will be an inhomogeneouspost-curing over the complete cylinder width when restarting themachine due to the temperature exposition at the cylinder surfacecaused by the blade.

2. In the initial phase, the cylinder surface has not yet reached it’s finalhardness and is thus especially susceptible to mechanical abrasion. Atalloyed surfaces, complete particles can be erased at worst.

3. In the beginning, the thickness of the coated cylinder surface has notreached it’s maximum value. The lattice energy of the surface atoms hasnot yet reached it’s lowest enthalphy value. The surface valences are not

totally saturated. Thus the atoms are susceptible to chemical corrosioncaused by water, by the electrolytes of the paper web and of the spraywater as well as by atmospheric oxygen.

Advantages:

8/10/2019 PETROFER - Yankee Coating

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/petrofer-yankee-coating 71/128

Advantages:

1. COTAC 115C applies a soft coat onto the new cylinder

surface.COTAC 115 C chemically bonds to the free iron ions orunsaturated valences at the coating surface. Thuschemical corrosion is reduced.

2. Due to the formation of a phosphate layer, the free heatenergy from the blade is spread evenly over the cylinderwidth.

3. The calcium content charged from hard spray water ischemically bonded to calcium phosphate. Thus there is noformation of calcium carbonate, an abrasive agent thatmay damage the still relatively soft cylinder layer.

Recommended procedure when restarting the machine: 1. Cotac 115 C is applied 10 minutes before placing the blade with the enclosed

8/10/2019 PETROFER - Yankee Coating

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/petrofer-yankee-coating 72/128

calculation of the dosage quantities.2. The common application of the coating chemicals Cotac H and Release Agent is

done 5 minutes before placing the blade.3. In general, Cotac 115 C is applied at least for one week. Furthermore we consider

to apply Cotac 115 C continuously further on because apart from the protectivecharacteristics described, positive effects for the coating can be achieved as well. As already mentioned, calcium ions are bond to phosphates:- Calcium ions do form lime at a certain input of carbonates; lime in turn

has a reduced heat transfer. It is thus possible to take better advantage

from the drying capacity of the cylinder and the coating has a higher adhesion.- Furthermore the occupation of the carboxylate groups of the cellulose from thepaper web is inhibited. The free access of the carboxylate groups by thefunctional groups of the polymers from the adhesive agents Cotac H is essentialfor the formation of a chemical bonding and thus for the adhesion.

4. The dosage of our coating chemicals during the application period of Cotac 115 Cand after the application of Cotac 115 C has to be adjusted, if necessary. Ingeneral, there is too much adhesion which can be compensated by increasing thedosage of Release Agent.

The necessary dosage quantity of Cotac 115 C  for sufficient protection is

8/10/2019 PETROFER - Yankee Coating

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/petrofer-yankee-coating 73/128

calculated as follows:B * v

D = ----------- k

with: Dosage quantity Cotac 115 C : D [l/h]Spray width cylinder: B [m]Cylinder speed: v [m/min]Constant: k [m²/l] : = 4277 [m²/l]

Calculation example:

Spray width: 3.5 mCylinder speed: 1500 m/min

The calculated dosage quantity for Cotac 115 C is as follows:

3.5 [m] * 1500 [m/min]D = ------------------------ = 1.23 [l/h]
