Private Lives ofHollywoodTyrone Power and Sonja Henie
Survive a "Prop" RomanceBy ED SUWVAN
Hollywood.
THE ••pUblicity" romancesof Hollywood have beenmany and varied. A studio
has a bright young femme starand a personable young malestar. At the suggestion of thepubltcity department of the stu-dio the young stars make it apoint to be seen in all of theHollywood spots where pressphotographers are most apt tobe found. The studio publicitydepartment pays for the flowers, the dinners, the taxicabs, andall other expenses incurred insuch a ••romance," and chargesit up against the acres of pub·licity that are thus prodded fromthe fan magazines and press ofthe world.
Tyrone power and SonjaHenie were one of these plantedromances, and they got enor-mous publicity from it. In fact, they also got the plot of " SecondFiddle," in which Tyrone, play-ing the part of the studio pub-licity man, insisted on Sonjadoing all of the -spurlous thingswhich the two of them did inreal life.
It is very rare indeed that a" publicity" romance finds ahappy ending. Tyrone, for In-stance, wooed Sonja for the pub-licity department, but privatelymarried Annabella. Sonja Henieis still single and now hasreached that box office securitywhich permits her to choose herown Hollywood escorts. Whenshe marries you can make asmall bet that she won't wedany of the chaps who werepicked for her by the publicitydepartment.
Of all the young stars of theindustry few have contributedso much to the night life of thecolony as Tyrone and Sonja. You see them at all of the clubs, you see them at parties. Theydash to New York, they tourEurope, they go to South Amer-ica. Tyrone and Sonja are thekind of movie stars that theirfans can enjoy. Others may with-draw to their estates and brood, between pictures, on the banksof their swimming pools. Ty-rone and Sonja go places, seethings. And Miss Henie is oneof the best dancers out here.

From the standpoint of thefitness of things, consider Ty.rone Power's marriage to Anna-bella on April 23. It had sparkleand spirit to it. They met, thesetwo, for the first time quite byaccident. Tyrone had gone overto the "Baroness and Butler"set to see Walter Lang. Quitecasually he was introduced toAnnabella. Neither he nor theFrench girl sensed that littleDan Cupid had pinked 'em.
They met the next time on aphony desert in a phony sand-storm on the back lot of Twen-tieth Century· Fox while AllanDwan was directing them in"Suez." It being a physical im-possibility to haul his troupe ofactors to the Suez canal, Dwanhad directed the technicians tobuild him a desert behind thestudio. Sand was hauled up bythe carload from the Pacificbeaches, and it was on this phonydesert that Tyrone and Anna-bella met and fell in love. Thewind machines, simulating asandstorm, blew the fine partl-cles of sand into Annabella'sface and hair and ruined hernails, but nothing could ruin herdisposition. Tyrone started pay-ing some attention to the finelittle trouper who was taking abeating on the phony desert.Other girls would have cursedand raged at the director, orgone temperamental. Not An-nabella. She reveled in therough going. ••By the time thepicture ended I was in love,"says Ty. "I don't know abouther feelings, but she had metalking to myself."
Thus their romance started inpicturesque fashion, and it hascontinued just as colorfully. Thenext time they met was in SouthAmerica, at Rio de Janeiro. Shehad gone there on an Englishmail packet. Tyrone had flowndown via Pan American Air·ways. She was on her way toBuenos Aires to visit some rela-tives, but she stayed long enoughat Rio to go night-clubbtng with

him, and they traveled togetherto the mountains rimming thecity to gaze at the magnificentharbor and city spread out belowthem. Cincinnati's Mr. Power, with the Rio moon in his corner, persuaded the girl from Paristhat they ought to spend therest of their lives together onthe mountain tops of the world.
Four months 'later they weremarried quietly on the coast, and since then they've continuedto cover a lot of ground in spec-tacular fashion. They took abel ate d honeymoon trip toEurope by boat, and returned ona trans-Atlantic Clipper ship.As if that were not colorfulenough, no sooner had they land-ed than Annabella, fearful ofwar, fiew back to Paris to gether young daughter by a pre-vious marriage, and then re-crossed the Atlantic by air. Insix months Tyrone and his bridehave done more traveling thanmost married couples aceom-plish in a lifetime.
"After six months of mar-riage, Tyrone," I asked him,••what do you think of it?" Hesmiled broadly. "I wouldn'ttrade it for anything in theworld, Ed. It's wonderful. She'swonderful. You know, despite
what others have said on theSUbject, it seems to me that anactor should marry an actress. There is a sympathy of intereststhat is not to be discounted. When I come home from thestudio I'm often down in thedumps. A certain scene hasgone poorly, or I've played ascene badly. Annabella, fromher own experience, knows justhow I feel. Or 11 I come homefeeling that I'm on top of theworld she understands that, too.H she weren't a professional Idoubt that she'd have that un-derstanding.
••She has a broad understand-ing, a grand sense of humor, andwe like the same things. Youknow a fellow is attracted to alot of girls when he's a bachelor. One attracts him because she'sb e aut i f u I, another becauseshe's witty, another one be-cause she's poised, another be-cause she plays a good game oftennis. Annabella is all of thesethings put together."
I asked him if he would insistthat his actress wife give up hercareer on the screen. ••GoodLord, no!" he exploded. ••Iwant her to make pictures. Infact, we're looking now for astory that the two of us can doon the screen together. Afterworking with her in •Suez' I'dlike nothing better than anotherchance to be in a picture withher. She's got plenty on theball. Her per for man c e in•Wings of the Morning' was as
channing as anything I've everseen on the screen; didn't youthink so?" I assured him thatit was.
They live, these two ideallyhappy youngsters, in a home onSaltair road in Brentwood whichformerly was occupied by Gract'Moote. It is convenient to thebridle paths, and both of themlike to go horseback riding. Herfavorite sport is swimming, andshe plays a fair game of tennisand is an expert at backgammon, ANNABELLA

at which she beats him consist-ently.
Blonde and slender, the Pari-sian girl who stole Tyrone awayfrom a covey of Hollywood beau-ties who would have loved tomarry him does not intend torest on her laurels. Every dayshe goes thru a rigorous courseof calisthenics to retain thatslenderness. In the movies andaway from the screen her hus-band meets a lot of stunners.Annabella intends to be just asstunning as they. Her calisthen-ics are an insurance policy on'happiness.

by Darryl Zanuck when everyother studio in town ridiculedthe gamble involved in signinga girl without acting experience, has made five pictures, each ofthe last four more successfulthan the one that preceded it. Inbetween she has toured the coun-try with her own ice revue andcracked all box office records. It is difficult to associate thissmiling, friendly girl with bust-ness acumen, but there is nodoubt that she is one of theshrewdest business women thatever hit this town, and her show-manship is superb.
Sonja lives quietly with hermother and brother in Jean Har-low's former home, but she is

seen frequently (between pic-tures) in the local night clubs. When she first came to Holly-wood the movie queens put herto disadvantage, but now she isone of the smartest dressers outhere. Lee Bowman is her favor-ite dancing partner, but you candoubt that romance is involved.
Another dancing escort is VicOrsatti of the agency whichhandles her business. CUrrentlyshe has been going places withChicagoan 'Alan Curtis.
They say that it is difficult totalk business with her, but letthis be pointed out: I know of noperformer in the business whohas such a deep sense of grati-tude and appreciation as MissHenie. I was one of the first toget on the Henie band wagonwhen she arrived, and her gratl-tude for that early championingof her cause is remarkable. Allof her friends will attest to thatquality in her, a sense of appre-ciation that is remarkably In-tense.

The public, w h Ichis veryshrewd in choosing its stllrs, hadno hesitation in selecting herfrom the time she made her firstpicture. The affection of thatpublic has never wavered. Theyrecognize in the smiling, friendlyNorwegian miss not only a greatchampion but also a great per.son. In five pictures she hasgrossed $10,000,000 for her stu-dio, and she is now makingher sixth, which will gross atleast $1,000,000 in the domesticmarket.
