RSVP HERE! Tuesday, February 23 Film Screening "Picture a Scientist" 6:00PM PICTURE A SCIENTIST chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we encounter scientific luminaries - including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists - who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all. These discursive practices often become automatic and invisible to us, which can make teaching them to students a challenge. In this workshop for faculty, participants will be introduced to cognitive apprenticeship as a model for teaching disciplinary discourse and will come away with specific strategies to support students’ learning. Facilitated by Rachel Stumpf, PhD, Education Specialist - Center for Educational Effectiveness. RSVP HERE! Friday, February 26 Formative Feedback to Engage Students in High-Enrollment Classes 12:10PM--1:30PM In this workshop, Dr. Rucha Joshi (Biomedical Engineering) shares the system she developed to provide formative feedback to students in online classes. Dr. Joshi will describe characterizations of feedback along multiple dimensions, such as dialogic iterative cycles, personalized, goal-directed, immediate, in written format, and having a peer assessment component. She will share results of her implementation of this system and give participants an opportunity to adapt the tools for their own classes.
