Report

Industrial Action in Schools

As you are aware there has been an ongoing industrial dispute between the government and the Australian Edu-cation Union (A.E.U.) over a new enterprise bargaining agreement (EBA). In effect, the previous agreement ex-pired two years ago and there has been little progress in moving to a new EBA. The AEU has put in place various measures and bans, some of which will affect you in the next few weeks.

Half Day Stoppage – Wednesday 5th December 2012.

AEU members are likely to take a half day stop work on Wednesday 5th December.

While I do not have confirmed numbers yet, previous ex-perience would suggest we will be able to operate only two year levels until the end of the action at 12:28 pm.

Year 7 classes will operate all day. Year 10 will also oper-ate so the students who have booked and paid to com-plete a First Aid course can do so. Other year levels will not operate in the morning.

Staff will return to duty at 12:28 pm and therefore normal arrangements will operate for lunchtime and Periods 5 and 6.

Parents who are unable to make alternative arrangements for their children for the morning on 5th December should contact me on 6032 9483 to discuss the situation.

End of Year Reports

As part of this industrial campaign The AEU has imposed a ban on the provision of any written comments in the end of year reports. (Reporting of VELs progression points and satisfactory/unsatisfactory for VCE, VCAL and VET are not included in the ban) Senior students requiring references are also exempt from the ban.

While all students will receive reports indicating their pro-gress, there will not be the comprehensive information usually provided in reports by those staff involved in pro-tected industrial action. Parents can of course contact the school through the relevant Year Level Coordinators to discuss their child’s overall progress and if necessary ar-range to meet with individual class teachers about any specific concerns.

I certainly understand the inconvenience associated with these actions by AEU members. However I can also un-derstand the frustrations of the members who have wait-ed two years for a new agreement. Having discussed the situation at School Council, I am sure all members of the school community agree that we hope that an agreement is reached soon.

Adam Shale—Field and Game Champion

Adam competed in the Field and Game Nationals held in Seymour on the 3rd and 4th of November. Last weekend, he won the Overall Junior National Title!

Adam was the Over-all Junior High Gun Winner for the event with a record score of 134; Shooting a possible round of 25/25.

Close to 500 shooters from all over Australia competed at this year’s Carnival. More than 73,000 clay targets were blasted over the course of the weekend as competitors vied for over $57,000 in prizes.

Adam won a Shotgun for Overall title. He also won other prizes for the Junior Handicap event and came in 5th out of 500 for the overall handicap event on Sunday. Adam was also involved in the junior teams event with local shooters from Cobram, Rhys Torphy and Ryan Leman. They won this event quite convincingly.

In two weeks, after his last exam, he will be shooting Federa-tion Nationals hoping to obtain a spot in the National training Team to shoot at the world championship to be held in Spain next year.

Very well done Adam. Congratu-lations on this recent big win, and the best of luck in the next round of competitions.

Fundraiser for Switzerland..

On Sunday the 18th of Novem-ber I found myself in Chiltern Jail! No, not what you might think – I was there was a fundraiser in conjunction with the Chiltern Tourism Community Garage Sale.

The idea was to have some high profile locals “jailed” and have to “make bail” by phoning friends, family and colleagues

for donations. Each prisoner had their mug shot taken and was given prison overalls to wear before spending some time in the cells making calls

The goal for the day in terms of profit to go towards “Guide a Guide to Switzerland” was $4,000. At last count, it seems that not only has the target been met, but came close to doubling it! The Bail Out event itself, along with the profit of the BBQ and the Garage Sale were a resound-

ing success. All proceeds will be distributed to these 4 girls to assist with the payment for their trip to Switzerland in July 2013.

This is amazing opportunity for these four young women and incredible for Chiltern Guides to have had four girls be accept-ed for this event.

Year 10 Practice Job Interviews

Most of our fabulous Year 10s dressed up and participated in practice job inter-views on 22nd November. To make it a more ‘real’ experience, profes-sional recruiters were enlisted and the inter-views were held at the Rural Transaction Centre (Rutherglen Library). In preparation for the event, each student completed a formal Application Letter and a Resume. The interviewers found the students to be generally well prepared and commended them on their ability to conduct themselves well in an interview. There was tough com-petition, particularly for the more popular jobs of Animal Attendant, Childcare Assis-tant and Labourer. Congratulations to those who enthusiasti-cally participated and showed passion for their own interests and abilities. I would like to thank the following panel members: Leo Whyte, La Trobe University; Joanna Macklan, Nellen Wodonga; Claudia Pane, ATEL Wangaratta; Ty Boddenberg, MEGT Wodonga, and Glenda McKay and Lance Sullivan from Rutherglen Rotary. Thanks also must go to parents for support-ing this activity. 2012 has been a great year for participation. 2012 Sculpture Trail ends with new commis-sion for Rutherglen rail trail.

The unveiling of the 2012

aRTS Rutherglen com-missioned sculpture “The Trail-way”, took place on Sunday the 25th alongside the Ruther-glen Railway station at 6pm.

The sculptor, George van de Ven paid tribute to the many people who had helped him with the sculpture including Shane O’Meara, Kevin St John,

David King, the aRTS Ruth-

erglen committee, Ricky Hiskins, Kerrie Ware and in particular, Rutherglen High School metal work teacher Chris Phillpot who did all the welding on the structure.

George spoke about the inspira-tion behind the design and explained the concept of transport in the past and in the present connecting people. The two co-joined bicycles at the front of the metal engine out-line represent the wheels of the train, and are also symbols of connectivity and transport. The research into the trains of Vic-toria- the history, colours, gaug-es and types- is evident in the 4 metre long sculpture that was

described by aRTS Ruther-

glen secretary Irene Webster as “quirky, light- hearted and fun”.

The weekend ceremony marks the second commission by

aRTS Rutherglen and sig-nals the end of this year’s highly successful sculpture trail that featured work by local and national artists. Entries also included some beautiful work by students of Rutherglen High School. Supervising art teacher and artist Di Kotzur displayed the student work at Valhalla Winery where it received very positive feedback from the public. The outstanding entries in this year’s “Sculpture Trail” were judged by Jamie Durrant, editor of Essentials magazine, and were showcased at Scion Winery, Valhalla Winery, The Wicked Virgin and the Infor-mation Centre.

2013 Notice of Insurance Policies

Dear Parents/ Guardians,

Please note that Rutherglen High School does not have Student Insurance.

School Injuries and Insurance

Parents and guardians are generally responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including any transport costs. Most medical costs will be refundable by Medicare. If you are a member of an ambulance or health insurance fund, you may also be able to claim transport or other expenses from the fund.

The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development does not hold accident insurance for school students.

Is other insurance cover available? Yes.

The Department is aware of two insurers, JUA Underwriting Agency Pty Ltd and Willis Australia Ltd, that provide accident insur-ance policies for students. These policies provide specific benefits for students who are injured in accidents for a reasonably low cost. Other insurers may also do so.

If you need further assistance please contact me on 02 60 329 483.

Rutherglen Primary School's Assessment by Presentation has become a red letter week on the School's calendar as students in Grade 6 present two extremely well prepared topics to a panel of adults con-sisting of their current Grade 6 teachers, their former teachers, teachers from the secondary school and community mem-bers. The students also have their parents in attendance to offer feedback and re-flection on how their child has presented but also to offer insights into how their child has developed over the years at the School.

It is a wonderful opportunity for the stu-dents to showcase their research skills, particular interests such as leadership and the gifted and talented maths group and other special projects they have been a part of. The students are able to examine their own personal growth by closely re-flecting on what they have learnt over the year and indeed over the past years at RPS.

The three students pictured, Demelza, Jayden and Sam were all well prepared, confident, articulate and personable. It was a delight to be able to listen to the students and understand where their primary school journey had taken them in terms of personal understanding and de-velopment, leadership skills, academic skills, sporting achievements and emo-tional and personal skills development.

We are invited every year to be a part of the panel and every year it is both an edu-cational and genuinely moving experi-ence. Congratulations to all the gradu-ating Grade 6 students. We wish you all the best for the future and we look for-ward to seeing many of you at Rutherglen High School in 2013.
