PRINCIPAL’S REPORTDear Parents and Caregivers,

Times of change are upon us at Henley High School. After 12 years as the Principal of Henley High School we farewell Liz Schneyder, who has won the position of leading the External Secondary Schools Review team for DECD. In her role as Principal Liz has been the driving force behind the many changes across teaching and learning, facilities and progress at Henley High School over the past decade. It has been her unwavering focus on continuous improvement and quality teaching and learning that has enabled Henley to grow and be recognised for the outstanding programs which it offers.

It is with great pleasure that I would like to announce that Mr Eddie Fabijan has won the position of Principal at Henley High School for the next seven years. Eddie has taught in many rural and urban schools including the Australian Mathematics and Science School before winning an Assistant Principal position at the Centralian Senior College in 2006. We welcome Eddie to the Henley High School community and look forward to working with him in the future. I will be continuing on in the role of Acting Principal until the end of the year.

Sandra Moran | Principal

Farewell LizIt is with some excitement that I have accepted a new leadership position for the next three years, beginning in term 4 of this year. I will be leading the External Review of Secondary Schools in South Australia.

While the new position is certainly demanding and challenging, it does not have the same intensity nor demand the long hours that, in the end, I determined I could not do for another seven years. As I turn 65 this year, it is my intention to retire at the end of this new three year position.

There will be several opportunities over the next few weeks for me to publicly reflect on my 12 year journey as Principal of Henley High School. I am hoping members of my leadership teams, teachers, students, parents and the wider community will be able to join with me to celebrate the growth and successes and challenges that have made this school the outstanding educational institution that it is today. It has been a truly wonderful team effort.

I have heard only good things about the newly appointed Principal, Eddie Fabijan, who has already made contact with the school. I look forward to meeting with him early next term.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge the work of Anthony Van Ruiten in Term 1, and Sandy Moran in Terms 2-4 who have been in the Principal position, Trevor Cibich as Deputy Principal , and the admin team, who have stepped up in 2016 during my Principal on Assignment secondment to DECD in Central Office. They have been outstanding in providing high level leadership to the whole school community

I thank all for the privilege of leading such a wonderful school for the past 12 years.

ICE FACTOR SPECTACULAR FASHION PARADEThe Henley Dingoes Ice Hockey Team were part of the Ice Factor Spectacular. The event features a Fashion Parade produced and choreographed by generous professionals and volunteers from the Powell Model Agency and the wider community. The Henley students were lucky enough to be suited up by Peter Shearer Menswear and had three weeks of modelling training. Thank you to Martin Gilligan from Peter Shearers, Rundle Mall. These are some photos from the excursion on the 9th of September to the city where the students were fitted for their suits.

ICE FACTOR SPECTACULAROn 16th September the program hosted the 6th biennial Ice Factor Spectacular at the Hilton Hotel Adelaide. With over 500 guests the event was packed and there were many highlights on the night. Students, Mackenzie Pickering and Tobin Cox interviewed Olympian swimmer Daniel Smith on the big screen and Tyson Wood represented the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people of Australia with a didgeridoo beatbox. The crowd and sponsors could not believe their ears when he started his performance! The boys looked dapper in their suits and participated in a fashion parade on behalf of Peter Shearer Menswear. The purpose of the night was to promote the program to the wider community and raise funds so that every player in the program can have their very own ice hockey skates. Part of the experience was for the students to write a letter to the sponsors that have already supported them and also write about what the program has taught them. Congratulations to the following students for their letters and dedication to the big event - Lachie Cahill, Mark Sandery, Jordy White, Tyson Wood, Liam Sharp-Wilson, Callen Nelson Penfold, Tobin Cox, Jack Dempsey and Mackenzie Pickering.

FIGURE SKATER HELPS TRAIN ICE FACTOR RECRUITSYear 9 SSP figure skater Kiana Ponce Castro has her training at the same time as the Henley Dingoes Ice Hockey Team on a Wednesday morning. Kiana’s natural coaching abilities came out when she came to the other side of the ice to help out newest dingoes members Phil Slattery and Brett Sinclair in their first ever ice hockey training. Great work everyone!

THE ICE FACTOR CHALLENGE CUP DIVISION III WINNERS – OUR VERY OWN HENLEY DINGOES!With such a large amount of schools involved in the program [19 schools] the challenge cup has been split into divisions. The first ever Division III cup was won by the Henley Dingoes who will now be moving into the division II group in their first year.

The tournament was on the 23rd of September and included Ocean View Stingers, Thebarton Thunder, Roma Mitchell Blue Machine and Playford Panthers. The team consisted of only year 8 and year 9 students as senior members Izak Rankine, Mackenzie Pickering, Jack Dempsey, Tobin Cox, Carlin Stutley, Jacob Cichowski and Kobe Rankine were all out with either injuries or other commitments.

The day was packed with excitement with the first game against Thebarton Thunder being a 1-1 draw. Deacon Braun set the tone with the first goal of the day for the Dingoes [Deacon ended up with 5 goals by the end of the tournament]. It was all positive from there on in with the Dingoes winning every other game on the day. Congratulations to Phil Slattery and Brett Sinclair for their very first tournament and their very first goals!

Well done to founding member Liam Sharp-Wilson on his first goal. Callen Nelson Penfold held the fort in net as usual and a fantastic effort by Callen for supporting other teams in net on the day. Congratulations to Lachie Cahill on his leadership award, to Tyson Wood, Mark Sandery and Jordy White on their encouragement awards for consistent improvement. Extended accolades to Jordy White for speaking at the opening ceremony on behalf of Henley High School and presenting Martin Gilligan of Peter Shearers a thank you plaque in his very first tournament. Finally, a huge thank you to the family community who spent the day cheering on the boys!

LUDICROUS SPEED Henley high school participated in the F1 in school’s program at this year’s Royal Adelaide Show, it is the first time our school has been represented in this program and we had some very good results. Mr Barrett has lead the team of Alex Dawes, Amy Holland, Blake Robertson and Riley Nicolle through a rigorous development program and has produced a very fast car.

F1 in schools is a program where students design and build a CO2racer, built from scratch, using digital technologies to design and manufacture the vehicle. It is powered by a CO2 canister similar to that is used to make soft drinks at home. The team will take part in the professional class, that is the top level of the racing program. It is more common to begin at the entry level and develop the program over a period of several years.

Our students have designed and built a series of cars that have progressively advanced in sophistication to the Hi Tech racer that will roll out on race day. The development program has seen the students design wheel packages, design and test wing configurations and a variety of axle and bearing configurations. Our team was also required to build a pit display, seek sponsors and record their journey in a detailed folio.

The results were impressive for our first year of competition –

• Fastest reaction speed run• One of the fastest recorded runs in practice• Second fastest recorder run• Third overall• Wild card entry to the nationals

The team was heavily penalised for several minor technicalities in the scrutineering process that resulted in some substantial time penalties. This resulted in our relegation to the minor places, however the raw pace of the car was evident. This was rewarded in the judges awarding Ludicrous speed a wild card entry to the National titles to be held in conjunction with the Melbourne F1 event.

VET HOSPITALITY STUDENTS COOK UP A TREAT IN THE VET CAFECertificate 2 Hospitality (Food & Beverage) students from Henley High School and local WASSN schools undertake both theory and practical components of the course each Friday under the experienced direction of Shannon Lim, Henley’s Hospitality trainer.

The course delivered with the support of TAFE SA enables students to gain useful skills and experience in the hospitality industry, opening up options for further career choices and employment. Successful completion of the course delivers 35 Stage 1 SACE credits as well as the nationally recognised qualification.

After running the highly successful VET café for students at recess on Fridays during term 2, students were given the opportunity to develop and demonstrate their preparation of food, taking of orders and interacting with customers in a simulated restaurant situation. The feedback gained provides valuable evidence of them demonstrating their competency.

For further information about the Cert 2 Hospitality course at Henley HS please contact Shannon Lim or for VET enquiries, Chris Mesecke VET Coordinator on 8355 7000.

VET FURNITURE CONSTRUCTION SITE VISIT COMACE COMMERCIAL JOINERY AND CONSTRUCTION

As part of our Certificate 1 in Furniture Construction our class visited Comace for a tour of the Factory. The Director of the company Mr Paul Williams was on hand to guide us through the very impressive facility as St Marys. Paul Williams built his company from the ground up and is now a major player in South Australia in relation to commercial joinery fit outs.

The day started with a short presentation of the history of the company and an insight to the land mark projects that Comace has worked on. Then we started a tour of the facility, first stop was the costing department. Students were given a short talk by the companies costing analyst and developed an understanding of the tendering process and what is involved in costing out a large scale projects.

Next stop was the design suite where the students were able to watch the drafts people draw and manipulate designs in a 3D drawing program. It was at this point where they watched a small unit developed specifically for the site visit being drawn and then set on to the computer operated CNC for cutting.

From the design suite we went out to the work shop and watched the CNC mill cut the cupboard that had just been sent through. The students watched as the CNC cut all the components to size and bored all the required holes.

The next stage involved “edging” the components – putting a high impact PVC edge on all of the components, the students were all able to operate this machine under supervision.

The final step was a brief talk from Jack, a 4th year apprentice that had just completed his school based training. He talked about the process of beginning your trade training while still completing his SACE. Jack then demonstrated the process of assembling a cupboard, using a variety of tools and hardware.

In all it was a fantastic morning, the students gained a valuable insight into the industry and we cannot thank the people at Comace enough. They went out of their way to make our visit informative and interactive. The feedback from the students was very positive and I feel it was a very important part of the program.

STAGE 2 DRAMA STUDENTS PERFORM 'BUSTOWN' "Bustown. Breathe in deep, can ya smell it? Smell of bus seats. Vinyl and sweat. Nothing nowhere beats that." On the 14th and 15th of September the Year 12 Drama students performed their group production 'Bustown' for an audience of family and friends. 'Bustown', written by Lachlan Philpott, is set in a post apocalyptic world and tells the story of a small community of survivors who live in abandoned buses. The production explored the possible future impacts of global warming and nuclear warfare and was the student’s major assessment task for the year. Twelve students performed and three students fulfilled off-stage roles in the areas of research, set design, and hair and make-up. The students worked hard to create a highly entertaining, polished and thought provoking production in which they demonstrated exceptional creatively and ensemble skills.

ALEX HAYDONOne of our students in Year 9, Alex Haydon competed on the weekend in Sydney at the Australian Junior Squash Championships.

Alex proved that being one of the youngest in the under 17 girls draw wasn’t a limit for her. Haydon who was second seed met Grace Pattison, top seed from Tasmania in the final. Haydon proved too strong for Pattison and in 19 minutes, won the match 3-0. Alex Haydon def. Grace Pattison 11-2, 11-6, 12-10.

Well Done Alex

Sunday morning on the 30th of July, was an early start for our performance at the Opening Ceremony of the under 15’s National Netball Championship. We performed an acappella version of the National Anthem, and then Viva la Vida by Coldplay and Valerie by Amy Winehouse. We sung as each State team was introduced onto the court and also as a feature item in the middle of the ceremony. The crowd gave us great feedback afterwards and seemed to enjoy the performance. This was a great experience that has helped us gain more confidence for future performances and we would love to participate in similar future events.

Where do you currently work - Viva Fitness, Kidman Park

What are 3 things you are passionate about -

• My Family (I see that’s the reason why I am here)

• Health and Fitness ( I train, coach, play and love everything that activity does for the body and the mind)

• Fishing (its my off time and I get to shut down and allow myself to concentrate on one thing… Fishing!

Favourite HHS memory -

That’s tough as it seems so long ago but besides the football, girlfriend and finishing I think being successful and enjoying the subjects in year 11. It seems bland but I was most together in my own life at that time and had my best year of school which I’m proud of.
