Friday 4 September – Staff Professional Development day.

Dear parents & community members,

In 2014 the College embarked on a school wide project on developing a positive school culture and work climate. A facet of this project is the creation of a School Improvement Team and this team will run a whole staff development day to provide the School Improvement Team with the opportunity to have all staff together for a whole day to further progress the implementation of their school improvement strategy.

All staff will focus on building understanding of the college’s organisational health and its link to the key drivers of school performance and student outcomes. Staff will also be given the opportunity to be involved in determining the focus of the school improvement strategy establishing the school we would like to be at the end of 2016.

Approval for a whole school closure has been granted and on this day (Friday 4/9/2015) there will be no classes operating and no supervision provided. Students may consult with their Mentors regarding work that they may wish to continue from home on the day.

Please contact the college if you require any further information.

Regards,

Eddie Fabijan Principal

Menzies Pathways Program in Darwin – 1 to 4 June

The purpose of this program was to find out about career options that are available through Menzies School of Health Research. The week was organised into sessions of people coming to talk to us about their careers as well as participating in health activities.

The Menzies Child Health Team set up a health lab and we used equipment to check our height, weight, blood pressure, lung capacity and more. We went to Charles Darwin University and completed the NextLife Finder for careers and courses matched to our strengths. The presenters gave us an overview of what it’s like to study at CDU. We looked through Horticulture and Aquaculture in the School of Primary Industries. The barramundi jumped out of the water to get the smaller fish we were feeding them. On the last day we went to Pudakul Aboriginal Culture Tour at Humpty Doo. Members of the Kenyon family showed us bush tucker and medicine, plants and dyes used to make dilly bags and baskets, didgeridoos and spears. We had a go at spear throwing. Every afternoon we would write reflections at Menzies, to rate how the day was.

Rebecca Grange – Year 10 Student

We discovered numerous ways to get into Health such as studying a Certificate IV, Diploma course, Preparation for Tertiary Study or Bachelor Degree. Menzies also offers gap year traineeships to encourage more aboriginal people to work in Health Research. Four Menzies trainees and CDU students talked to us about their experiences and career pathways. We visited the Royal Darwin Hospital and laboratory and found out about Allied Health careers. Many indigenous patients would feel more comfortable with an Aboriginal Primary Health Practitioner, Nurse or Doctor to treat them and there’s a big need for more Indigenous Liaison Officers and Interpreter Services. Throughout the program we received a lot of information from people which was great because now we have a lot of contacts to talk to them about our areas of interest.

Chloe Tilmouth – Year 11 Student

Clontarf State of Origin Game

On June 17 in line with the NRL State of Origin game, Centralian Clontarf Academy hosted an Australian Rules State of Origin game with all Alice Springs Academies represented by staff, students and alumni. The game pitted the NT vs the Allies (all other states) and was played hard but in fantastic spirits which made field umpire Matt Skoss’ job quite easy. In the end the young legs of the NT side proved no match for the experience of the Allies, with the combined side going on to win by 4 goals. A rivalry has been born and a rematch will certainly be on the cards for next term.

Chris Macaskill-Hants – Operations Officer, Centralian Clontarf Academy

Radiant Dreams

At the National Pioneer Women’s Hall of Fame, Ms Judith Coverdale’s Year 10 Art class are currently participating in an art exhibition to celebrate The International Year of Light. Students from Ross Park Primary School, Centralian Middle School and Gillen Primary School are also participating. The event is for students in Years 6 and 10 and is going to be held until Saturday, September 20th 2015. The exhibition captures “A delightful escape where dreams appear as luminous organic forms under UV light.”

“It was a very well organised and enjoyable event. Many thanks to Judith Coverdale who co-ordinated this event with Centralian Middle School, Ross Park and Gillen Primary Schools; also to our students who presented some excellent work. It was good to see some of the parents of our students there. I would encourage you all to attend this appealing and different exhibition at the Pioneer Women’s Hall of Fame at the old gaol as it is open for another month.” – Ms Belinda Harding, Manager of English, Humanities and Arts.

CHOICES Workshop The Northern Territory will see its first Australasian Rescue Challenge (ARC) held in Alice Springs 23-26 July 2015. CHOICES is a road safety workshop aimed at educating senior school students at the learner driver or provisional driver stage.

As part of the ARC event, Year 11 students of Centralian Senior College have the opportunity to join in this unique CHOICES workshop held on Wednesday 22 July at the Alice Springs Showgrounds.

The ARC brings together rescuers from the Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services, St John Ambulance, mines rescue organisations and the Department of Transport who deliver in partnership a cohesive, interactive and challenging workshop for students. Facilitated discussions address the following areas;

• Road safety statistics and facts • The influencing factors of crashes • The ‘whole of life’ cost and consequences of crashes • Road user behaviour • Harm and risk reduction strategies • True stories and case studies • Jaws of Life demonstration

The event will be held over 4 days and is open to the public and the teams are assessed on their ability to undertake a rescue from three scenarios reflecting actual ‘on road’ incidents that are time critical and patient focussed.

New Phone System

Centralian Senior College will be upgrading its current phone system soon. We will become a part of the

Northern Territory Government system and our current phone numbers will change. A date has not been set yet but all families will be notified closer to this time.

Karina Fabijan – Administration Officer

Principal for a Day As an initiative of the Principals Australia Institute, on June 3rd two Year 12 Students, Maxim Buckley and Aleisha Lindsay, were assigned the roles of Acting Co-Principals of the College. Approximately 300 student principals from 176 schools took part in the event. Among the projects that day, Maxim and Aleisha conducted a small survey across the three year levels at the College to determine what the students thought would be areas for improvement. These areas were: more subjects to choose from; talks and presentations from different Universities across Australia to get a better idea of where the students would like to go; and more options for study areas and the Study and Enrichment Centre. Overall they found that the students at the College thought that they do have the resources in order to accomplish what they would like to do in the future.

These ideas were then passed to the Chair of the College Council, Mr Fred Richardson and Principal Eddie Fabijan at a meeting later in the morning. There were discussions around the Year 12 Study Area facilities and it was agreed that Mr Fabijan would explore options for Year 12 students to have some form of key/swipe card access at all times from the Charles Darwin University side of the College building.

With minimal notice to staff a “lockdown” drill was organised and the Acting Principals were tasked with monitoring the drill and collating details of procedures and suggested improvements which have been passed on to the College Work Health & Safety (WHS) Committee.

Well done to Aleisha and Maxim on a productive and successful day, we hope the experience was enlightening.

On Friday 24 April, Centralian Senior College Year 10 students assisted Acacia Hill School with their Youth Week event, The Rainbow Serpent Fun Run. Acacia Hill & Sadadeen Primary students walked/ran/rolled

through a 3km course and at various stations were coloured with different coloured paints. By the end of the course they were covered in the colours of the Rainbow Serpent.

A fun afternoon was had by all and our students were left with the satisfaction of helping less able students and serving the community in a meaningful way.

Judith Coverdale worked with Stage 2 Photography students Tiffanie Hughes, Jessie Stennett & Aleisha Lindsay documenting the day and we hope you enjoy these samples of their fine work.
