Dear Parents & Carers,

The end of a busy, productive and challenging Term 1 has arrived with staff and students taking a well deserved break.

The sad passing of two significant College community members, Neil Cramp & Briar Roach, during the term has displayed the resilience

and strength of our school community in supporting one another. Our heartfelt condolences and support continues to the Harding & Roach

families. Thanks to all students, staff, and families who came together to raise significant funds towards assisting the Roach family to return

to New Zealand.

Activities have not slowed down even with us at the end of Term 1.

Our Wednesday morning training sessions have been going well, with great enthusiasm and sportsmanship shown by the students, and

the fellas of course enjoying their post-training breakfast. We’ve made a range of breakfasts on Friday mornings, from tacos, to pancakes

with yoghurt and frozen berries and smoothies, to omelettes.

In Week 6 we had Emily Reid visit from the Duke of Edinburgh’s International

Award (NT Division) and we signed up 17 students for the Silver Award and two for the Bronze

Award from the Year 11 and 12 groups. We’ve got six more students to sign up for the Bronze

Award from Year 10, so in total we’ll have 27 Clontarf fellas doing their Duke of Edinburgh

Award this year, which is exciting. Our Year 12 students also started up their portfolios with Clontarf Employment Office Simon “Bomber”

Coutts. David and Thomas took four students, Quill, Jonathan, Travis and Glenn to the Yeperenye Shopping Centre to assist members of

the public with shopping and they received much positive feedback from the public.

In Week 7 we had our first footy game against Yirara College Clontarf Academy, with 20 students lacing up their boots for the game and

also great support from a few of the Year 12 students. We also had two more students get their health checks done and they were pretty

chuffed with their Deadly Choices shirt they received from Congress.

In Week 9 we had a tri series footy competition against Yirara Contarf Academy and St Joseph’s Flexible Learning Centre at Yirara

College. The students contested very well and won the first game against St Joseph’s, but unfortunately fell away against Yirara who had

too much leg speed across the field. We also had the ADF visit and speak to the students about Employment Pathways, Gap Year,

Norforce and their personal journeys to ADF. Cheyne said it was a great session with the fellas

engaging well with the ADF and asking many creative questions.

We have early morning trainings every Wednesday morning with a 6am pick up, health checks

at Ingkintja Men’s Health Clinic every Thursday morning and early morning breakfasts on Friday

mornings again with pick-ups at 6am as well.

Upcoming events include:

Term 2, Week 5: Clontarf Territory Cup, Friday 25 May at Albrecht Oval

Tyson Carmody - Director & Cheyne Miles - Operations Officer

A Wednesday morning training group

Shopping Assistants

Cooking pancakes

EVENTS

In Week 7 the Centralian Girls Academy supported the Centralian Senior College Year 12 Camp at the MacDonnell Range Caravan Park. We teamed up with the school counsellor Taegan Pascoe to run an Amazing Race event where the students were split up into teams. Each team had clues to five stations where they would complete small team challenges to get the next clue. It was a successful event for all

involved and was a great way for students to let their hair down and have some fun.

Recently the Alice Springs community were saddened by the tragic accident that took the life of a beloved young woman, Briar Roach, who was a 2017 graduate at Centralian Senior College and an active member of Centralian Senior College Girls Academy. In Week 6, Centralian Senior College held a remembrance day for Briar where the students wore something yellow and the Girls Academy made yellow ribbons for the staff and students to wear on the day. Briar will forever be remembered for her loving and caring nature and will be missed dearly by all

of the staff and students at Centralian Middle and Senior Girls Academies

In Week 9, the Centralian Senior College Girls Academy celebrated the birthdays of Jaylene, Jayhannah, Mikaela and Hannah for the month of March. It is great to see students and staff

starting to look forward to each month for a slice of cake. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARCH LADIES!

CONTACT TIME

During Easter in Week 9, the Year 10 students participated in a fun and exciting Eggcellent Amazing Race. There were four stations that included challenges such as doing the Nutbush, the cup flip, and re-enacting the Jim Carey sticky tape scene from Liar Liar. Thank you to Vicky, Emma, Hilary, Taegen, Amanda and Nadine for your support to make this event as suc-cessful as it was. The girls had a blast and it was good that the staff were able to see the girls in a different light. Congratulations to Hannah, Kiannah, Jaylene, Nellie and Kat for

winning the race and taking home the Easter themed goodie basket.

FAREWELL

On behalf of the Centralian Girls Academy, we would like to wish Robyn Liddle the best of luck in her next chapter of life. Robyn will be on maternity leave as of Term 2. Robyn started at the Centralian Senior College Girls Academy in 2017 and has been one of the straight talkers with the girls to keep them on their feet and motivated. Her fantastic sense of humour and crazy witch woman laugh is going to be missed in the GA room. We wish Robyn, Louie, Ariyah and new bub on the way the best

for their future as a family.

REMINDER

Enrolments need to be handed in by Monday of Week 1, Term 2, if you would like your daughter to be a part of the Girls Academy program. Students and Parents / Guardians, please fill out, sign, and complete the

enrolment form. They are available in the Girls Academy room.

In our Year 12 Mathematical Methods class we get to the heart of the matter integrating not just socially, but in working our Mathematical

functions and complex integrals. Libby, Naomi and Koumini show off their skills and the guys Rav, Josh and Cooper brave it out by just

doing it on the board. It is a challenge to put yourself out there in front of friends, but it is always exciting watching my Year 12 students

give it a go and making that effort. In this very intense Term 1 they have worked hard and are hoping to gain a strong foothold as the year

moves on for them. With four more Skills and Application Tasks and an investigation to be completed, we will band together to make 2018

a great year of resilience, perseverance and success together. Eunice De Kock - Year 12 Mathematical Methods Teacher

Students who are leaving the College grounds during the day are required to sign out at Reception, with their parent /

guardian co-signing.

If a parent / guardian is unable to co-sign, a verbal message / phone call from the parent / guardian to Reception is sufficient.

This applies to all students, including Year 12 students.

Year 12 students who wish to leave the school grounds during lunch need to have an approved Year 12 Lunch Pass Letter

and Permission Form signed by their parent / guardian and the Year 12 Coordinator / Assistant Principal / Principal. These

forms are available at Reception.

Centralian Senior College has a duty of care for students during the school day so it is important that students follow this

procedure.

This will ensure that during an evacuation for an event such as a fire all stu-

dents can be accounted for.

Thank you for your help in ensuring the safety of our students.

Students are also reminded that mobile phones are to be on silent and put

away during class time. This is an easy way to optimise their learning.

I Am

by Ezra Angeles

I am from Sherrin footballs

From boomerangs and spears

I am from the porch of 24 Cummings,

The good vibes of having my family close

I am from the footy oval,

The sound of boot to ball.

I’m from the family barbeques and back yard cricket,

From Budi and Beverley,

I’m from loud music and dancing mums, dads, nanas and pops,

And from competition.

I’m from dreamtime stories and family history,

And a place free from pain.

I’m from hunting kangaroo on the weekends and playing AFL.

I’m from Alice Springs and the kwatye that falls on the red dirt of Ayampe.

I’m from curry chicken and cabbage stews,

From talented uncles and aunties making state teams,

Hundreds of trophies and medals all around the house for memorabilia.

I’m from the Central Arrernte and Pertame tribes of the heart of Australia

Most importantly I’m from my culture and ancestors,

That walked the red dirt of my home Ayampe.

I Am

by Hannah Gibson

I am from the coloured sands of Elim Beach

I am from stiff, salty, square curls

I am from falling asleep to a million crashes of water drops on the tin

roof of my grandparents’ beach house

I am from going back in time to the stories of my Ngathii’s

(grandfather’s) childhood

I am from hours of swimming in the black waters that generations of

my family swam in

I am from bogged cars in the white powder-like sand of

Munbaah River

I am from footy shorts saturated in red dirt and colours

of the rainbow

I am from ass whoopings

I am from having to do things twice to learn my lesson

I am from good times and bad

I am from friends that turned into brothers and sisters

I am from joy

I am from sleeping under millions of stars on an almost broken

trampoline

I am from cheeky nieces and nephews

I am from imaginary motorbike races

I am from fishing until 3am

I am from laughs

I am from tears

I am from mournful family loss

I am from family road trips in rusty old cars

I am from blood red stained feet

I am from beautiful red and pink sunsets

I am from salt water and red dirt

I am from change

Most of all I am from love

In Week 7, the Year 10 students spent the week doing VET (Vocational Education and Training) through CDU in a range of certificates,

including:

VET Counts

VET offers students an opportunity to try careers and start Certificate courses, with the credits going towards the completion of their Northern Territory Certificate of Education and Training (NTCET).

At Centralian Senior College VET is an important part of the school. In 2017, 87% of our Year 12 students were engaged in VET courses

throughout their schooling; this compares with only 44% of Year 12 students across the NT.

On Thursday 15 March, the Year 10 Community Services class visited the Sadadeen Pre-school. The students played with the children and helped them to wash their hands and put the play equipment away. The children loved the students and enjoyed being able to sit on

their laps at reading time.

VET Community Service excursions like this give the students a taste of different careers and helps them to figure out what they want to

do for a possible future career and so what to study in school.

Congratulations to Juice once again! That’s Year 12 students Felise Naufahu, Ricky Bloomfield, Tjamuiwa Presley, Shawn Foster and Brodie Roesch. They have taken out the Central Australian heat of the Battle of the School Bands for the third year in a row! And a big congratulations to Riana Naufahu who also blew away the judges and the crowd at CMS with her original songs and strong performance in the solo section. Riana and Juice will head to Darwin in April to compete with bands and soloists from around the Territory for the

chance to perform alongside a national line-up at Bass in the Grass in May.

Juice and Riana Naufaha with Simon Peddar from the Battle of the School Bands judging panel

Year 11 student Shaquiena George, who was named the Young Centralian Citizen of the Year Award at this year’s Australia Day Flag

Raising and Citizenship Ceremony, has been named a finalist in the Glencore McArthur River Mining Regional and Rural Initiative Award,

which is part of the Northern Territory Young Achiever Awards.

Shaquiena is working towards her VET Certificate III in Applied Language (Arrernte), having completed her Certificate II in Applied

Languages (Arrernte) last year. This was the first time in Australia a VET Indigenous language course has been based in a school.

Shaquiena has given the Alice Springs Language Centre constructive feedback on the design of Certificate II and III in Applied Languages

(Arrernte), which they deliver. During her work experience at the Alice Springs Language Centre, Shaquiena also supported the Arrernte

teacher to run an Arrernte day for primary classes.

Shaquiena is a student leader at the Girls Academy and has started a NTG school-based traineeship at the Alice Springs Hospital. She

also volunteers at Larapinta Town Camp events and Akeyulerre Arrernte Healing Centre with her grandmother.

Shaquiena will find out if she is the winner of the Initiative Award tonight, Friday 13 April, at the Awards Gala Presentation Dinner at

Skycity Darwin. If she wins, she will have the chance, as one of the 12 award category winners, to also be named the 2018 NT Young

Achiever of the Year.

Well done Shaquiena, and good luck!

Lucy Stewart, who coordinates Vocational Education and Training for our students, and I recently attended the 2018 Career and VET Coordinator Seminar where the theme was ‘Employees of Tomorrow’. Presenters from the Foundation for Young Australians, Industry Skills Advisory Council NT, Education Services Australia and the Career Industry Council of Australia spoke about an economy that is

rapidly becoming more globalised, automated and flexible.

One new approach that the Australian Government is investing in, is based on the success of the Higher Apprenticeship Program introduced by the UK in 2012. Part academic, part vocational training, all on the job, Higher Apprenticeships enable individuals to undertake a recognised national vocational qualification at Diploma, Advanced Diploma-level or Associate Degree, while fully employed

and earning a wage.

Major industries currently contributing to the Northern Territory’s economy include energy and minerals, tourism, agribusiness, international

education and training and defence (technical skills). Growing job opportunities are in creative industries, human services, health,

environmental services and renewable energy.

It is predicted that young people today are likely to have 17 jobs over five different careers in their lifetime. As well as promoting

occupational pathways through VET, Centralian Senior College supports a range of relevant opportunities like work experience, school

based or full time apprenticeships and traineeships. Helping our students link their classroom learning to emerging jobs, for example Sci-

ence, Technology and Maths, will address the skills employers need. Just as important, students need to develop attributes employers

want, such as the ability to work well with others, problem solving, strong work ethic, creativity, adaptability, computer skills and fluency in a

foreign language.

Australian Youth Foundation identifies seven job clusters to broadly categorise different kinds of future work. These clusters may be a

useful way to frame discussions with your young people about jobs as they prepare to be more open and adaptable to change.

Stress and anxiety are common among young people, whether they’re undertaking work experience, going to job interviews, or embarking on their post-school pathways. Maintaining good health and wellbeing can make a big difference to how students cope with these challenges. Visit myfuture to read about how their physical and mental health benefit their careers (myfuture.edu.au/career-insight)

myfuture: Staying healthy is good for your career

Generally, when we think about our career or working life, our physical and mental health isn't the

first thing that comes to mind. Many of us direct our thoughts towards training courses, resumes,

salaries and job search sites.

Career now includes all the roles you undertake throughout your life – education, training, paid and unpaid work, family, volunteer work,

leisure activities and more.

As you can imagine, juggling all of this takes a lot of energy and effort. Ensuring you make time to look after your physical and mental

health is a great way to perform at your best and get the most out of your career.

Here are some interesting facts on why staying healthy can be great for your career:

Exercising can reduce stress hormones and improve concentration and memory.

Studies have shown exercise can have positive effects on the symptoms of depression.

Feeling physically and mentally healthy can be great for your confidence.

Regular exercise can help to improve your sleep.

Activities that include mentally demanding tasks such as dancing, puzzles and crosswords have also been shown to improve cognitive

function so feel free to pull out the dance moves!

That all sounds great but how does it translate into the real world?

Secondary school years

Let's start by looking at secondary school years. This is a great time to start developing healthy career habits that can continue throughout

your life. Secondary school is an opportunity to try different sports; it also provides structure that can help you develop the time

management skills you'll need to balance your career going forward.

One of the most stressful experiences during high school is preparing for and taking exams. To perform at your peak in exams, you need

lots of energy, focus and concentration. Getting enough sleep, managing stress and keeping a good study–life balance are essential for

getting through this period.

Here are some examples of simple strategies that can help you include healthy activities in your school life:

Walk to school if you can or get off the bus a stop or two earlier and walk the rest of the way.

Join an existing school sports team or have a chat with teachers about introducing a new team or sport to their program.

Plan ahead and pack a healthy lunch over buying something from the canteen.

Get a group of friends together to train for an upcoming event or fundraiser (eg a charity fun run, triathlon or adventure race).

The annual Year 12 Camp was recently held at the MacDonnell Range Caravan Park on Thursday 15 and Friday 16 March.

43 students participated in the Year 12 Camp which proved to be a very successful learning experience for all involved.

Regina Sellar from St Johns Ambulance Australia NT delivered practical hands on lessons in First Aid.

Team building exercises delivered by Amanda Kenna saw students engage in working as a team to solve problems. The main message

being delivered was “support each other to achieve Year 12”.

Students were assisted in doing a detailed check of their NTCET patterns.

Swimming was a very popular free time activity and was supervised by town pool life guards.

Students enjoyed a meal at the Star of Alice restaurant followed by a fun quiz night organised by Emma Forrester.

Day Two started with bacon and eggs and the famous Pancake breakfast. To burn off some of these consumed calories we had the

After morning tea Regina presented students with different scenarios of accidents. Students had to apply their newly acquired First Aid

skills. Students demonstrated some very imaginative uses for their mobile phones. Certificates will be presented to students at our next

Year 12 assembly.

To conclude the learning at the camp Headspace presented information to Year 12 students about self-care and looking after yourself

when under stress. Interestingly three Panda Bears were seen attending this session, sitting quietly and being very attentive.

Well done to all concerned on what was an enjoyable Year 12 Camp. I am sure students will take with them not only great memories, but

some valuable lifelong lessons.
