August/September 2014 Dear Northeast Parents, I am excited to welcome our Northeast Community back to school this year. Students will be coming to a nearly completed building. As you can see as you pass our building on Duvall Highway, our new Media Center is almost complete. Our portables are gone and all of our classes are now under the new school building’s roof. The new “Home of the Eagle” is nearly a reality. As we discussed during the George Fox commencement ceremony on June 17 th in the NHS Auditorium, 9 th graders, your eight weeks of summer are nearly over, and it is time to begin your journey toward a prosperous and well rounded future. You will enjoy the academic challenges that lead to inspirational moments of greatness, which will propel you to the opportunities beyond your graduation from Northeast High School. We will begin that journey on August 20 at 6:30 p.m. for Freshman Parent Night. Sophomores, this will be your year to really start building your transcript. Many of you have enrolled in your first Honors or AP class, which makes you a competitive student for acceptance to the college or university of your choice. This will be your year to really capture the opportunities that are available to you here at Northeast High School. Parents, now is the time to research colleges and help your student find scholarship opportunities. Your student’s counselor is an excellent place to begin. Please watch for all the college information that our counseling office delivers through Naviance and our website: northeasthigh.org. Juniors, this will be your most pivotal year for accomplishing your post-secondary opportunity. Every Junior should be taking the SAT or ACT exam in the spring for admission to the college or university of your choice. Also, all Juniors should be enrolled in or have taken at least one honors or AP class by the beginning of your Senior year. Parents, you can help your student stay on track by checking their grades through Parent Connect, and then encouraging your student to use I and I as well as Extra- Help Mondays to improve their grades past a “C.” This academic success translates into scholarship money to help pay for college. Last year’s graduating class earned over $8 million in scholarship money. Seniors, it is business time! Finishing your academic careers strong is paramount to moving on to the next phase of your lives. We want you to have every opportunity to pursue a prosperous and fulfilling career. Be sure to stay in touch with your counselor to reach the post-secondary goals you have set for yourself by your graduation date. Also, help one another make good decisions, not only with your academics, but also in times of celebration and excitement. Parents, we look forward to seeing you at Back to School Night on September 23. Remember to sign in on the Parent University sign-in sheet at all of our events to collect your well-deserved credits for your involvement in your child’s education. August/September 2014

Dear Northeast Parents,

I am excited to welcome our Northeast Community back to school this year. Students will be

coming to a nearly completed building. As you can see as you pass our building on Duvall Highway, our

new Media Center is almost complete. Our portables are gone and all of our classes are now under the

new school building’s roof. The new “Home of the Eagle” is nearly a reality.

As we discussed during the George Fox commencement ceremony on June 17th in the NHS

Auditorium, 9th graders, your eight weeks of summer are nearly over, and it is time to begin your journey

toward a prosperous and well rounded future. You will enjoy the academic challenges that lead to

inspirational moments of greatness, which will propel you to the opportunities beyond your graduation

from Northeast High School. We will begin that journey on August 20 at 6:30 p.m. for Freshman Parent

Night.

Sophomores, this will be your year to really start building your transcript. Many of you have

enrolled in your first Honors or AP class, which makes you a competitive student for acceptance to the

college or university of your choice. This will be your year to really capture the opportunities that are

available to you here at Northeast High School. Parents, now is the time to research colleges and help

your student find scholarship opportunities. Your student’s counselor is an excellent place to begin.

Please watch for all the college information that our counseling office delivers through Naviance and our

website: northeasthigh.org.

Juniors, this will be your most pivotal year for accomplishing your post-secondary opportunity.

Every Junior should be taking the SAT or ACT exam in the spring for admission to the college or

university of your choice. Also, all Juniors should be enrolled in or have taken at least one honors or AP

class by the beginning of your Senior year. Parents, you can help your student stay on track by checking

their grades through Parent Connect, and then encouraging your student to use I and I as well as Extra-

Help Mondays to improve their grades past a “C.” This academic success translates into scholarship

money to help pay for college. Last year’s graduating class earned over $8 million in scholarship money.

Seniors, it is business time! Finishing your academic careers strong is paramount to moving on

to the next phase of your lives. We want you to have every opportunity to pursue a prosperous and

fulfilling career. Be sure to stay in touch with your counselor to reach the post-secondary goals you have

set for yourself by your graduation date. Also, help one another make good decisions, not only with your

academics, but also in times of celebration and excitement.

Parents, we look forward to seeing you at Back to School Night on September 23. Remember to

sign in on the Parent University sign-in sheet at all of our events to collect your well-deserved credits for

your involvement in your child’s education. Also, be sure to check out northeasthigh.org for all the

up-to-date calendar events and information.

Federal Impact Aid

Survey Form

On Tuesday, September 30, 2014, your child will bring home a Federal Impact Aid Survey form. Please assist

us by filling out the information requested on the form and return it to Anne Arundel County Public Schools in the

self-addressed, stamped enveloped provided.

The U.S. Department of Education has now requested a separate survey form for each child, the complete

address of the parent/guardian’s employer if they work on federal property, the complete address of the federal

property on which they work, and each survey form must be signed and dated by the parent/guardian. If needed,

additional forms may be obtained from the school or downloaded from the AACPS website (www.aacps.org) under

Students, Forms. The Federal Impact Aid Survey form for 2014-2015 will be available to download on September 30,

2014. We will also be using our Connect-Ed Automated Telephone Notification System to remind everyone about the

significance of completing and returning this survey. The school system received approximately $2 million in funding

from the Federal government in support of our children after the forms are processed.

Thank you in advance for your support and assistance. Should you have any questions regarding this

information, please contact Ms. Donna Barker at 410-222-5200.

for Parents

If You Will Be Driving Your Student To and From School….

When driving your student to and from school, please use the drop-off loop in the gymnasium

parking lot off of Duvall Highway. You may no longer use the Tick Neck Park entrance as that parking

lot will be for use only by students with parking passes. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Inclement Weather Closings

The Board of Education has unanimously approved changes in the 2014-2015 school year that clearly address

the handling of inclement weather closings and allow parents to make plans for Easter/Spring break and summer

vacations.

Under the revisions approved by the Board on May 7, 2014, five days are built into the calendar for inclement

weather closings as opposed to the four included in past years. Should more than five days be necessary, the sixth

through ninth days will be taken, in order, from the first four days of Easter/Spring break (March 30, 2015 through April

2, 2015).

The calendar further stipulates that should any or all of the sixth through ninth days be needed for inclement

weather closings after April 2, 2015, the necessary makeup days would be added onto the end of the school year. Any

additional days necessary beyond the ninth day, regardless of when they occur, would also be added to the end of the

school year.

Under the approved calendar, schools and offices would still be closed on Good Friday and Easter Monday, with

no plans to utilize those days as makeup days.

From the Attendance Office

Early Dismissal Policy

You must come in and sign out your student and have proper identification.

If you have someone picking up your student that is not on the emergency card, please send a note ahead of time

with your student.

If you know you will be picking up your child early for any reason, please have your child bring in a parent note,

including a phone number where you can be reached, to the Attendance Office that morning and your student will

be waiting for you in the Attendance Office.

If your student is sick, they must go to the Health Room. Health Room staff will coordinate pick-up with the

parent/guardian.

If your student drives or walks and you know they will have an early dismissal, please send in a parent note with a

number where you can be reached that morning. Once we verify the note with you by phone we will release the

student.

Please make sure all your contact information is updated in our system. The Attendance Office will be calling to

verify any requests you have by phone or by note.

Please note that this policy is for the protection of all of our students.

Your cooperation is appreciated.

Science News

Costa Rica Trip

Eighteen NHS students spent a week in Costa

Rica as part of an Eco Tour of that country. Mr. Green

and Mr. Imwold served as chaperones for the trip, along

with Ms. Lisa Gleeson and Ms. Amanda Kotowski

(NHS 2011). Students repaired a trail through the

rainforest and observed crocodiles in the Savegre River.

They also studied the rainforest flora on horseback,

observed various native animals (4 species of monkey,

birds, armadillos, squirrels, and poison dart frogs). The

trip’s purpose was to provide students with a world

look at Earth’s environmental status….what it can be,

and a comparison to our experience here in the United

States.

In summing up the overall experience, perhaps

Jenna Dumsha (NHS 2013) said it best as she floated

down the Dominical River, “Mr. Imwold, just leave me

here…”

Environmental Science Club

On June 6 some 30 students participated in

landscaping the NHS courtyard by planting shrubs and

flowers to attract hummingbirds and butterflies, and

“built” a garden for planting in the fall or spring

semesters. The Environmental Science Club is looking

for volunteers to weed and spread additional mulch in

the courtyard at the start of school n the fall.

Anyone interested should contact Mr. Imwold

at [email protected].

and previously scheduled appointments, counselors may

not be available to personally receive your phone calls

or see you immediately if you drop into the office.

Making an appointment will assure that you will see

your counselor when you need to talk to them. Just call

Mrs. Frashure, our counseling secretary, at 410-437-

is not available to speak to you when you call with a

question, please leave a message with the secretary/or

convenience. If you wish to talk to your child’s teacher,

you may call him/her directly by asking the switchboard

operator to connect you with him/her in his/her

NCAA CLEARINGHOUSE

Is your student thinking about playing a sport

at an NCAA Division I/II school? If so, please check

out www.ncaa.org and www.ncaaclearinghouse.net.

You will be able to obtain:

1. The Guide for College Bound Student Athletes

2. A list of NCAA Division I/II schools requiring

certification for participation

3. A list of approved core courses at NHS (our high

school code is 210807)

4. The Clearinghouse registration form (Domestic

Student Release Form)

These resources will explain the do’s and

don’ts of the certification process, recruiting practices

and schedules, academic requirements, etc. The

Clearinghouse only performs certifications for students

currently in their senior year or who are already high

school graduates. Due to the length of the certification

process, it is recommended that you complete your

application as soon as possible after July 1 in the

beginning of your senior year.

TRANSCRIPTS

Seniors requiring transcripts for college

applications or scholarships must have a transcript

form, signed by a parent, on file in the Office of School

Counseling. Each transcript is $2.00. Seniors, please

allow at least three days notice for Mrs. Conner to

process your transcript request.

COLLEGE VISITS/INTERVIEWS

Some members of the Senior Class have been

visiting colleges during the summer, this is a great way

to be organized for the college application process.

However, other seniors plan to visit early fall. Now is

the time to make some definite plans to visit colleges.

Phone ahead for an interview or information session and

tour reservations. A good time to schedule one of these

visits is Friday, October 17. Phone the Admissions

Office today to make appointments for these important

visits.

VOCATIONAL APTITUDE BATTERY

(ASVAB)

Northeast will be giving the Armed Services

Vocational Aptitude Battery on Wednesday, October

15, 2014, at 7:30 a.m. for our 12th graders. Why

should our seniors take the ASVAB? In exploring this

question, the main focus centers on the fact that the

ASVAB will provide our seniors with information about

their abilities and career fields related to these abilities.

Whenever students have an opportunity to get more

information about themselves and career fields in which

they may be interested, the Office of School Counseling

seizes the chance to provide students with such an

opportunity. This is NOT a recruitment effort for the

military but an opportunity for discovery. If you do

NOT wish your senior to take the ASVAB, please

complete the attached registration sheet and return it by

Friday, September 26 to the Office of School

Counseling.

COLLEGE REPRESENTATIVE VISITS

A variety of colleges and universities send

representatives to Northeast to talk with counselors and

meet with prospective students. From September

through December many admission representatives will

be scheduled. Although we encourage seniors to meet

with these representatives, balancing academic priorities

with these visits requires advance planning. Students

will find the list of college appointments on Naviance.

Students must use Naviance to sign up for these

speakers. Students are responsible for making up all

missed work. Parents are welcome.

PSAT

The PSAT will be given to all 9th,10th, and

11th grade students on Wednesday, October 15, 2014.

The test is an excellent way to gain insight into what the

SAT is about...it’s a practice exam for the SAT. Also,

the PSAT is the qualifying competition for the National

Merit Scholarship Program. PSAT results will be

distributed in January. Please review these results with

your child. Students will be given a test booklet along

with their scores and encouraged to examine each

answer to determine their strengths and weaknesses.

SCHOLARSHIPS

It is never too early to start looking for scholarship

opportunities - Start Now! The Office of School

Counseling posts most opportunities on the Family

Connection Web Program from Naviance. Fastweb.com

is another useful online resource. Please see your

counselor for additional help and resources.

COLLEGE APPLICATIONS

Seniors, read the instructions for completing

your college applications. Application procedures vary

from college to college. Many colleges dictate that the

application, transcript, and recommendations be sent

together in one envelope. Be aware of deadlines. The

Office of School Counseling asks that you allow three

school days for transcripts. A transcript is a copy of

your official school record that shows the courses you

have completed and the grade you have received in

each. When you are a senior, your transcript will

include your preliminary rank in class and your grade

point average. Each transcript is $2.00 per request.

Seven days are required if there are additional forms to

be completed or recommendations to write.

SENIOR MEETINGS

Most senior meetings for the members of the

Class of 2015 took place this spring and summer.

During these meetings, counselors, parents and students

discussed post-secondary education and career plans,

and students and parents were given a Graduation

Notification Agreement to sign. Counselors are required

to have a signed Agreement for every member of the

Class of 2015 by the end of September 2014. Please

contact your child’s counselor if you and your child

have not held a senior meeting.

August/September 2014 Dear Parent/Guardian of Seniors, On Wednesday, October 15, 2014, the Office of School Counseling will oversee the administration of the ARMED FORCES VOCATIONAL APTITUDE BATTERY (ASVAB) for our seniors. The test will begin promptly at 7:30 a.m. and will take about 3 hours. Testing will occur in the auditorium. WHY SHOULD STUDENTS TAKE THE ASVAB? In exploring this question, the main focus centers on the fact that the ASVAB will provide students with information about their abilities and career fields related to these abilities. Whenever students have an opportunity to get more information about themselves and career fields in which they may be interested, the Office of School Counseling seizes the chance to provide students with such an opportunity. The ASVAB testing is an excellent example! After the test results are returned to the school, an armed services representative from the Department of Defense will conduct a workshop for students on how to interpret and use ASVAB test results. Attention Class of 2015

Your senior year is quickly approaching, and that means it’s time to take Senior Portraits!

Please be aware that even if you will not be purchasing photographs through Prestige, you should

have your portrait taken by them for the yearbook.

Remember! If you do not have your portrait taken by Prestige, your picture will NOT

appear in the yearbook. There is no charge to have your yearbook portrait taken if that is the only

portrait that you are having made, so be sure to come to school for your scheduled appointment

to have your portrait done even if you are not purchasing portraits. If you have missed your

scheduled appointment, please contact Prestige to reschedule for one of the make-up days to be

held in September.

Lifetouch’s final appointments for senior portraits at Northeast are on September 2 and 3. Seniors must have their senior portraits taken by September 12, 2014 in order to appear in the yearbook. If your senior’s portrait is not taken by September 12, 2014, his or her portrait will not appear in the Senior Portrait section of the 2015 yearbook. After you receive your proofs from the company, it is important that you go online and select the portrait that you would like to have appear in the 2015 yearbook. Choose ONLY a picture taken in the traditional tuxedo or drape with a BLUE background. If you choose a portrait without a tuxedo or drape and / or a blue background, the yearbook staff will choose a portrait for you. You may direct any questions to Monica Lynch at [email protected].

Thank you for your cooperation,

Yearbook Senior Ads

Dear Senior Family and Friends,

Senior year is an incredibly special time in your life as well as your senior’s. What better way to say so than a personal ad in the Northeast High School yearbook? We invite you to take the opportunity to share your feelings on this milestone year in your child’s life with a personal ad that your child will treasure forever.

Whether you want to share those wonderful growing-up years, a special academic or athletic accomplishment, and / or the sentiments of family and friends, placing an ad in this year’s

yearbook will allow you to create a lasting memento of your love for and pride in your child.

A personal ad in the yearbook allows you to recognize your student with photos, written

sentiments, or both and lets your student remember all the important people and happenings. A

personal ad puts a personal touch on a book that will be cherished for years.

This year, purchasing an ad is easier than ever. You can create the ad online or mail

your materials to Jostens to build your ad for you. Create your own ad by going to

for your child to get his or her friends included in this special memory book in the way he or she

would want to remember them. You can add this feature during your purchase section, and your child

can create and edit the pages until the deadline: January 30, 2015. After January 30, the pages will be

sewn in as they are.

ReplayIt™ returns again this year. ReplayIt™ allows parents and students to share photos not only with the yearbook

staff, but with the entire Northeast High School community AND see all of the photos that the yearbook staff collects

but may not use in the yearbook. The yearbook must be completed by mid-March, but ReplayIt™ allows your

student to include all of the school activities that occur after that final deadline like spring sports and prom.

From July 1 through June 30, students and parents can add as many photos as they like. All photos will be screened

for appropriateness by Jostens’ staff before they are placed on the Northeast High School’s ReplayIt™ site. On June

30, the “Time Capsule” will be sealed permanently, which means that only students who have purchased a yearbook

will still be able to view the Time Capsule. The Time Capsule will last forever and is free with the purchase of a

yearbook.

Help us make Northeast’s Time Capsule a huge success! Go to www.replayit.com/r/ to create an account and share

your memories with your fellow Eagles forever.

Inclement Weather and Emergency School Closings This calendar has five days built in at the end of the school year for emergency closings, making the school year 186 student days and 196 teacher days. If any of the five emergency days are not used, they shall be deducted from the June closing date. If more than five additional makeup days are needed:

• Monday, March 30 through Thursday, April 2– the first four days of Easter/Spring Break – will be used (in that order) for potential makeup days.

• Additional inclement weather closings after April 2, and any days needed beyond nine, will be added onto the end of the school year.

• If emergency closings fall on January testing days or the teacher workday, secondary schools will reschedule so that there are four consecutive testing days followed by one teacher workday. This scheduling affects all schools.

Semester Tests and Examinations Extracurricular activities, practices, and club activities shall be scheduled at the end of the regular school day for not more than 90 minutes on the evening prior to the day of semester tests and examinations for high schools.

Religious Observances Tests and examinations shall not be scheduled on the day of a major religious observance. Tests and examinations for evening high school will not be scheduled on the day a religious observance begins. Jewish and Muslim dates are set according to the Lunar calendar; they begin at sundown on the pre-ceding evening and conclude at sundown on the dates noted.

• Sept. 25: Rosh Hashanah • Oct. 4: Yom Kippur • Oct. 5: Eid al-Adha

Appropriate Exercises Schools shall devote a portion of the day to appropriate exercises on the following dates (or on the following Monday if date falls on the weekend):

• Oct. 13: Columbus Day • Nov. 11: Veterans’ Day

• Jan. 15: Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday • Feb. 12: Lincoln’s Birthday

• Feb. 22: Washington’s Birthday • April 24: Arbor Day

• May 25: Memorial Day

…and any other day of national significance. When schools are closed, appropriate exercises should be held on the preceding Friday.
