Principal’s Newsletter 26th October 2018 Dear Parents and Carers, We are well and truly into a very busy term 4 and today we celebrated World Teacher’s Day. I would like to acknowledge the great work being undertaken by the educators at our school and thank them for their work. Our confirmed enrolment for 2019 at the moment is almost 530 so we are working hard to ensure we recruit the staff we need to ensure good learning outcomes. Thank you to those parents who have responded to the class placement letter that has been sent home and I encourage everybody to do this if they have any concerns. The school was very pleased with the results from the Parent Opinion Survey. Thank you to all those parents who completed this important piece of feedback. The results are available for the school community on the school website. I shared this positive comment with School Council last Monday evening: ‘Warringa Park School is an amazing school that provides exemplary care and educational needs that caters for my child at school. The school also provides workshop assistance for families in relation to NDIS programs which I found most beneficial. The teachers and staff are friendly and highly experienced with children with all facets of additional needs. The curriculum is on par with my child’s learning abilities. Teachers listen to parents concerns and give informative feedback promptly. Principal is lovely and office staff approachable, proficient and friendly at all times. Warringa Park School has professional resources on hand i.e. OT, Speech and Wellbeing staff that assist families and teachers in recommending ideals that will assist teachers and families in development and management techniques for our children. My child has had some difficulties engaging with peers presently and self - esteem issues as well. Due to her going through puberty as well, it has been a challenging year. However, the teacher and staff at the school have really been alert and attending promptly towards our child’s concerns and promptly approached her underlying needs. It has been a wonderful support system. Thank you’. I have mentioned in several newsletters that I have been working with the Department of Education to achieve direct transport to the campuses. This will not be commencing until Term 1 2019 but we will endeavour to inform parents before the end of the year about any changes that will be occurring to the bus runs. Parents need to be aware that we will be moving to a more centralised system of pick up and drop off points rather than home pick ups and drop offs (there will still be some of these) in line with departmental policy. Monday 5th November is one of the four pupil free days designated to the school by DET and we will be using it as a report writing day. Parents may need to make alternate arrangements for the day as students will not be required at school that day. The following day is a public holiday for the Melbourne Cup, so there will be no students at school that day either. I’ve been delighted to see so many students involved in the swimming program and making such good progress at becoming water safe. The staff are doing an amazing job supporting students with this program and I thank them for this. The school is committed to providing students with as much physical activity as we can because we know it makes for better learning. Marie Hayes Principal No students at school 5 & 6th November 2018

Principal’s Newsletter 26th October 2018Dear Parents and Carers,

We are well and truly into a very busy term 4 and today we celebrated World Teacher’s Day. I would like to acknowledge the great work being undertaken by the

educators at our school and thank them for their work.

I shared this positive comment with School Council last Monday evening:

‘Warringa Park School is an amazing school that provides exemplary care and educational needs that caters for my child at school. OT, Speech and Wellbeing staff that assist families and teachers

in recommending ideals that will assist teachers and families in development and management techniques for our children.

The following

day is a public holiday for the Melbourne Cup, so there will be no students at school that day either.

I’ve been delighted to see so many students involved in the swimming program and making such good progress at becoming water safe. The staff are doing an amazing job supporting students with this program and I thank them for this. The school is committed to providing students with as much physical activity as we can because we know it makes for better learning.

Refugee Education Support Program (RESP) An application has been made for the 2019 RESP Program. The Refugee Education Support Program is a partnership with the Department of Education, CMY (Centre of Multicultural Youth) and Foundation House. The RESP Program aims to provide a holistic and targeted support to selected schools to strengthen connections between student achievement and wellbeing and student/family community engagement. In 2017 partnerships were formed with Warringa Park School, Foundation House and Drummond Street to provide parents/Carers from Refugee/Migrant backgrounds with workshops relating to services that enhance family health and wellbeing. The Wellbeing team have made referrals to both services linking students and families to counselling and parent support programs.

School Breakfast Club

Then WPS Breakfast Club has been running well with an average of 30

students attending on a regular basis. The program provides students with a variety of healthy food options - such as fruit cups, Vita Brits, Cheerios, baked beans, apples,

Vegemite toasties and milk. The new 200ml milk option has been a favourite. All breakfast club products are available to all campuses upon request.

Social/Friendship Group

The Social/Friendship Group will commence on 9/11 once a week till 30/11. Identified students from Foundation to Early Years will work in a small group setting learning and building skills through role modelling, role playing, turn taking and discussions.

After School Basketball Program

The program for term 4 has commenced and will be running for 5 weeks at Warringa Park School. The Werribee Basketball Association will provide students with skills in the four key fundamentals in basketball through a variety of skills and modified games. The program is targeted to students from refugee/migrant backgrounds.

NEW PARTNERSHIP - A new partnership has been formed with the Welcome to the Games Program. This program supports young people and their families to connect to local communities and services. A core eligibility to participate is young people living with a disability and coming from multicultural, migrant or refugee background. Students referred attended the Basketball Clinic at Eagle Stadium and were introduced to the Active boys and girls program run by the North Melbourne AFL Clubs Huddle Team.

SpecialistsThe past fortnight has been extremely busy with Specialists beginning the process of writing and moderating report comments for our students, and whole school events beginning. The first week of Term 4 Swimming is well underway and students are enjoying the opportunity to learn about water safety and also having a lot of fun along the way. Thank you to everyone at school for making it all work – the Specialist teachers for their work and of course Kacey Dixon for her amazing organization of the carnival.

This week Polyglot Theatre, who have been working at our school with our students for a number of years, returned for a six week residency. The focus for this year’s Arts Festival is all about light and shade, shadow and performance. This week in Performing Arts Stef and Mishca from Polyglot, along with Brian Smith our PA teacher, have been staging some wonderful shadow puppet plays with our students, showcasing their inventiveness and creativity. Coming up on 1st November at 12.30pm in Performing Arts, Brian and Heather will be leading Warringa Park’s contribution to the Australia wide ‘Count us In’ singing of ‘One Song’ by our students.

Respectful Relationships

Dear Families The Victorian Government is implementing Respectful Relationships across Victorian schools and early childhood services. As aLead school in this area we have been delivering the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships curriculum, a suite of teaching materials for Prep to Year 12, to all students this year. This term we will be delivering topics 7 and 8 which are outlined below. The Respectful Relationships initiative supports school leaders, educators and our school communities to promote and model respect and equality – and to teach our children how to build healthy relationships, resilience and confidence.

Topic 7 – Gender and IdentityLearning activities within this topic assist students to challenge stereotypes and critique the influence of gender stereotypes on attitudes and behaviour. They learn about key issues relating to human rights, gender, identity and focus on the importance of respect within relationships. The activities are adapted and designed to meet student age and learning needs. The activities promote respect for diversity and difference.

Topic 8 – Positive Gender RelationsLearning activities within this topic focus on building an understanding of the effects of family violence and focus on the standards associated with respectful relationships. Students develop the skills needed to solve problems, set boundaries within relationships, and play an active role within the prevention of family violence. They develop peer support and help-seeking skills that can be applied in response to situations involving gender based violence in family, peer, community or online relationships. Again these activities are designed for the appropriate year level and learning needs of students.

Supermarket nappies are made for children under 5. For those children who have a waist measurement greater than 40cm, you will need to look elsewhere for your child’s incontinence needs. Independence Australia is a company that supplies a range of incontinence aids. I encourage you to visit their website and phone them directly to discuss your needs. I do have a range of samples, feel free to come in and review them and discuss your needs.

Samples: 1. Tena Slip extra small waist-49cm-74cm 2. Molicare Premium Slip extra small waist-40cm-60cm 3. Prevail Youth Briefs Waist-38cm-56cm 4. Molicare Mobile extra small waist-45-70cm (nappy pants/pull ups) 5. Abri Form Premium extra small 50cm-60cm, (pull ups/nappy pants)

Camp Medication: I review and organise all camp medication. For this reason I need all Medication Authority Forms (Green Camp Forms) to be returned as soon as possible once camp paperwork has been distributed. I request that all medication be handed into me directly via reception at least 2-3 days before camp. I encourage you to obtain extra medication close to camp and provide me the original packaging. If your child has a lot of medication please request a webster pack from your pharmacist.

Medication: As per school policy we ask parents to commence all new medication over the weekend or holidays. So this can be closely monitored for any possible allergic reactions or side effects. We appreciate your cooperation regarding this. If you have any questions regarding medication or need your child to take medication at school please contact me.

Please note: • All medication needs to be in the original packaging with child’s name, dose and time on the box. • If medication is being transported in students bags please contact the school as soon as possible, so we can remove the medication. Chaperones can secure school bags whilst on the bus but must not be used as a courier. • If at all possible directly handing over the medication at reception or myself would be appreciated.
